I think it’s the defensive part that has him out the league because if he could light it up and be a cone on defense he’s still he in the league because if a dude will play willing defense they make a spot for him like a Bruce Bowen
Some point guards have longer prime years, some have their peak at age 30-34. Mudiay just needed to be more low key and avoid social media at all costs, where so many people are extremely reactionary just because someone doesn't play as good as Curry or Lillard. During eras where social media wasn't a thing, point guards who have unpolished jump shots get to grow more quietly compared to the point guards today who lack a money jumpshot. His play in New York was in no way, suggested that he's "done". Mitchell Robinson being a real pick and roll threat opened up his game. The problem was rooted from his time in Denver where Mike Malone was making horrible combinations of Faried-Plumlee, Nurkic-Jokic (Jokic playing the PF spot and he himself had struggled mightily at that time), and Faried at the small forward role - these are the kinds of lineups that have inexistent floor spacing and Mudiay was often played in lineups like this, setting him up to settle for jump shots that we know he can't make. What makes this worse was Mudiay didn't have ample time playing next to Jokic, Gallinari, and Gary Harris. This was the time when the Nuggets were not making it to the playoffs and Tim Connelly did some decisions that put a dent on the Nuggets' growth such as trading away the 12th pick to get two players that didn't last in Denver for 2 seasons, while holding on Will Barton while his value was high enough to get the Nuggets a key player (the recent trade to get KCP was clearly overdue). Mudiay did fine as a backup to Conley and Mitchell in Utah. The issues about Mudiay have always been "systematic" and never completely on him. So many people forget that a youngster placed in the wrong environments, lineups, or franchises can experience dents to their game. Only Fizdale and Snyder were the NBA coaches that mattered so far in Mudiay's career. He's definitely not gonna be an all-star suppose he returns to the league, but his showing in the G-league would mean he can still be a serviceable point guard to team trying to squeak into the playoffs.
Thanks for this video! Really sums up well what happened to Emmanuel Mudiay. I was once high on Mudiay, but I think after the Nuggets drafted Jamal Murray, it was the beginning of the end for him.
I live in China, but I used to cover the NBA for a major newspaper. I saw Mudiay play over here and I knew immediately that he wouldn't last in the NBA. He had all the raw materials - size, tremendous athleticism, strength, etc. - but his outside shot was iffy at best and for a guy who was supposed to be a point guard his court vision and decision-making were awful. It's too bad because he had real potential, but at some point you have to learn that athleticism and such only get you so far.

Similar situation now in Detroit with Killian, better guards drafted years after. Hopefully they keep developing him to be a great 6 man like we’ve seen this pre-season… Same type of roll could have been great for Mudiay 🙏
I never thought Killian was an nba player he's not crazy skilled for his position and he's athletically underwhelming. 38/26/77 shooting splits playing 25 min a game screams that level is too high for him.
I've never really seen him as a point guard, more of a playmaking two-guard. He was a slasher first and foremost, and even if he didn't become a much better shooter, improving his defensive consistency and decision making at least could've kept him on the court. I see this in Dante Exum now, playing the 3 for Partizan Belgrade and thriving, not having to shoulder the playmaking load of a point guard, instead being a decisive two-way wing and a solid corner shooter.
JC, I love the way you have developed over the years. I know you mostly do a basketball SG but could you consider doing a video on Zab Judd’s? I’m super interested to hear your take.

I heard the reason he decided to go overseas route instead of enrolling at smu at the time was because the ncaa would rule him academically ineligible. His prep school was not accredited
I'm not sure if his prep school was accredited or not but I can confirm it was academics. Smu's staff was trying to find every loophole they could but the feds were watching too close
It's wild because MOST (but not all) of these busts have in common is they can't shoot, they can usually handle, dunk, super athletic but can't shoot. lol There is very limited spaces in the league for players that can't shoot, you would think they would realize that over time.
I would've loved to see what a Murray-Mudiay backcourt would've looked like with all of the pieces they have now that would've been crazy....But he never developed
Or they just bad players when you compare them to other NBA players. The best players learn to play with others. Harden was drafted when he knew he was number 3 to a second year Westbrook and third year KD. Harden still learn to be a elite 6th man till he got his chance to become a superstar.
@@andrebryant5081 yeah but Harden could was a way better prospect as far the ability to shoot the ball when he came in to the league so it was much easier for him to adapt to playing off the ball can’t say the same for a guy who’s game relies on athleticism and isn’t the best outside jump shooter
Going to China was a dumb move IMO-I understand if his family needed the money right away. But overseas leagues are hit-or-miss at best at development of talent and skill, especially when no league has the prestige or resources of the NBA. I think he should at least have been a one-and-done at SMU, but all these other growth stunts were valid too.
The guy was not an elite athlete by NBA standards, and didn't accept developing as a defensive player or shooter. He still young so if he really wants it he can still develop a nba game.
I never understood the hype with Mudiay. Scouts talk about his size. While good at 6'5" w/a 6'9" wingspan, it's not that exceptional. Jamal is about the same size, and he was obviously better. Malone started EM right away as a rookie, and he hasn't done that since. Now all Nuggets rookies have to prove themselves before they get into the rotation.
Another guy who should have taken his butt to college. His game was so underdeveloped that he was fortunate to play the length of time that he did. He was a guy who needed two years in college.
I remember Isaiah Whitehead from Lincoln Brooklyn, who went to Seton Hall.. putting ìt on Mudiay at Rucker Park in Harlem..You should do one on Isaiah Whitehead J.C Salute!!

Couldn't shoot worth a lick, and couldn't go left... Like at all.
I thought he was on his way after Prime Prep. Daaaaaam son. He would b a good backup for my Lakers right now.. sware
You should do Keith Frazier from SMU
He was a dawg... His grades fuck him up along with allegations. @SMU Yu have to keep them grades up, not to mention Larry Brown was the coach therr. No need to explain that.
Knew he would be a bust. Bad free throw shooting in China, high turnovers, couldn’t shoot a lick and beyond his first step he was average in terms of speed.
Yea im looking at these clips and homie was always on the slower side
Not gonna lie, his game seems better deemed for the Derrick Rose era or the mid 2000s
Facts just the wrong era
While watching this i thought about Dante, where is Dante Exum? he was supposed to be like one of the best Australian basketball players
“Can’t miss future nba star”… “maybe the best/explosive in his hs sr class.” I said that about this guy. He whoo’d me. I am seriously not sure what happened &/or how he missed. Not sure going to smu was the best move & I haven’t watched your vid on what stunted his growth. I think your right on buying his hype, injury & jamal Murray didn’t help. The tyreke Evan’s comparison is good ..another string explosive pg of this generation who started w a good nba career only to fall off the map.
If he would have went to a team like charlotte, where they sucked always and kemba would have been out the door by his 3rd season that would help, Jamal Murray just came in and replaced him because he was better out the gates
We need a video on Allen crabbe
Yo u gotta do Keith Frazier next bro.. you couldn't tell me he wasn't gonna be a star during those years lol
I love these videos stunted growth should coach cause he really good at pointing out what went wrong and I hope some of these players like mudiay see this video and fix they game he still young he only 25 he got time to get his self back right
🙏🏾
How about a video on Malcolm Lee?
He wasn’t challenged young. Going overseas was a bad move. He needed to to learn the PG position.
Do dragan bender or any of the other suns draft busts
It's wild because MOST (but not all) of these busts have in common is they can't shoot, they can usually handle, dunk, super athletic but can't shoot. lol There is very limited spaces in the league for players that can't shoot, you would think they would realize that over time.
I agree
Said it myself for years that that league needs shooters. If you can do that, you'll stick around in the league.
The hoopmixtape/ BIL era... more harm than help? Let's talk about it
Nope because the real deals always show up
me asking about Ivan Rabb or Kendall Marshall or Thomas Robinson(Kansas)
Nerlens noel I think deserves a video
How about Ivan Rabb, JC?
I would've loved to see what a Murray-Mudiay backcourt would've looked like with all of the pieces they have now that would've been crazy....But he never developed
6:37 you’re funny😭😭😭
can you please do one Jarvis Hayes or Travis Watson
Same scenario about DSJR drafted another franchise player LUKA
Or they just bad players when you compare them to other NBA players. The best players learn to play with others. Harden was drafted when he knew he was number 3 to a second year Westbrook and third year KD. Harden still learn to be a elite 6th man till he got his chance to become a superstar.
@@andrebryant5081 yeah but Harden could was a way better prospect as far the ability to shoot the ball when he came in to the league so it was much easier for him to adapt to playing off the ball can’t say the same for a guy who’s game relies on athleticism and isn’t the best outside jump shooter
Another great job JC I love this guy l want the Lakers to get him. I think he d be good coming off the bench
Another PG lol the Lakers got 5 of them. Also if you hate Westbrook being on the team you wouldn't want a lesser version of Westbrook in 2022 in LA.
lakers fans really just want anybody
@@JAWS_2K They want all the wrong players to
Did you do Dante Exum yet?
He went from Mudiay to Bootiay 🤷🏽♂️
Going to China was a dumb move IMO-I understand if his family needed the money right away. But overseas leagues are hit-or-miss at best at development of talent and skill, especially when no league has the prestige or resources of the NBA. I think he should at least have been a one-and-done at SMU, but all these other growth stunts were valid too.
The guy was not an elite athlete by NBA standards, and didn't accept developing as a defensive player or shooter. He still young so if he really wants it he can still develop a nba game.
stunted growth: kemba walker!!!
You should do Thon Maker
I was wondering whatever happened to him. Dude had great talent
He’s on the twolves
I remember when he got drafted his cons were everything you mentioned
I thought I saw him on a 2k roster when I played a few weeks ago? Btw I met him a few years back while at open gym in Arlington but he was working out
No way in hell this man was 6’5
6’3 at best
He’s on the twolves now
Should’ve went to SMU with Larry brown
I never understood the hype with Mudiay. Scouts talk about his size. While good at 6'5" w/a 6'9" wingspan, it's not that exceptional. Jamal is about the same size, and he was obviously better. Malone started EM right away as a rookie, and he hasn't done that since. Now all Nuggets rookies have to prove themselves before they get into the rotation.
I went to the jordan classic at the barklays when he was invited his senior year and hands down he was the best athlete and/or player in that gym
On his draft day they called him the next Russell Westbrook
I was expecting this one... Sad 😔 😔
His jump shot is broken
Can we get one for Shabazz Napier?
I was a Fan of him especially and was
rooting for him as a Knicks fan… What a disappointment, especially being so young 🤦🏾🤷🏾
Another guy who should have taken his butt to college. His game was so underdeveloped that he was fortunate to play the length of time that he did. He was a guy who needed two years in college.
Do one on Calvin Brock from Simeon High School in Chicago who went to University of Illinois and went undrafted.
Absolutely atrocious efficiency was his biggest problem
He should have gone to SMU and get coached up by LARRY BROWN.
I went to Grace Prep
I feel like he was on the wrong team. Imagine how pop would have used him in the spurs system.
I remember Isaiah Whitehead from Lincoln Brooklyn, who went to Seton Hall.. putting ìt on Mudiay at Rucker Park in Harlem..You should do one on Isaiah Whitehead J.C Salute!!
Lately I feel we've been listening to a bust telling us about more successful bust wtf 🤔🤔🤔🤔
