Still one of the best hip hop groups of all time. Their music is easily one of the easiest to go back and listen to and still enjoy maybe even more. They should've been a lot bigger.
Yea I agree. I know they are known by people all over the world, but they still don't get mentioned enough. They were/are a one of a kind hip hop group, who did their own thing and brought a whole new vibe/sound! 😎🤙🏾💎✨💙✌🏾🎨⛅
De La Soul are legendary by simply staying true to who they were as artists 👨🎨. They didn’t jump on the latest bandwagon to be relevant. They are true pioneers of the genre. R.I.P to Trugoy The Dove 🕊️.
As a teen in high school, they were the first Hip Hop group that truly spoke to me as a fellow nerdy outcast in the hood....I didn't feel like I was alone anymore...RIP Trugoy....
Stakes is High is undoubtedly one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time! 3 Feet High and Rising as well but I prefer the darker contrast of Stakes is High
Stakes Is High brings bittersweet memories for me. When it came out initially I didn't notice because by 94/94 I had graduated from college, working two jobs, dealing with life, family, relationship drama, landlords, bosses- I had less time for hip hop. When I finally got to hear it almost two years later, I felt like crying. Like seeing long lost friends. But Hip hop was changing during this time and I didn't like it (Flashy Diddy Era..ugh) this album reminded me of the things i used to love about Hip Hop, and why I hated to new direction the art form was going.
ANY GROUP that stays together that long within itself speaks volumes but to STILL be known and relevant to this day makes them legends FOREVER!!!!! R.I.P Trugoy the Dove you will be missed.
As we all get older we’ll have to come to terms with the fact that a lot of the rappers we love are going to be under appreciated and forgotten. Nas has had a helluva run in the last few years and that’s super rare. I think Tribe was a slightly bigger name than De La but there’s a lot of people that have no idea who they were. There are people profiting off Hip Hop that has no idea who Kool Herc is!! There’s some youngster coming up that never heard The Chronic or It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back and they’re fine with it. That’s just the reality of the Hip Hop Universe. The people that love De La Soul know what’s up and that’s all that should matter.
Bro, please do your research, you can find a video here on RUclips of Kool Yerc saying he didn’t create hip hop, and that black Americans were already doing it well before he ever came to America. He was just the first DJ in Jamaica to play hip hop at one of their parties. Rappers delight came out I believe in 1972, but hip hop/rap was a thing, even being mimicked by American soul singers in the 60s & 70s. Give credit where credit is due, hip hop was created and is black American music, started in the south as one of the many musical art forms to describe our life and struggles.
Stunt# 2 was absolutely fact. I didn't fully realize it was until it was shown how many albums came out those two years. The competition was heavy in that era. A lot of guys got lost in sauce. Not because they were wack. It's because there was so much good music and so little funds to spend it on, you had to cop only a few a year. You had to be really, really good back then or you weren't getting attention from hip hop heads. I miss that era for real
You really missed the whole Tommy Boy Records saga, huh? The label never took advantage to digitize their back catalog until a few years ago when label founder, Tom Silverman got it back. Under the terms of their original contract, which never accounted for future format changes, they would have had to split only 10 % of the profit. They finally succeeded last year and set forth to release their Tommy Boy catalog, March, 2023. Unfortunately, Dave (Trugoy) passed away. And trust me, it was more than Spotify that it was released to and they definitely charted on Billboard from sales of 3ft High and Rising, 35 years after its original release
Look at the screen on 7:56 mark!! '93-'95 were such an explosive Golden Age for hip hop, i remember walking into a record store and being too confused to buy anything because so many damn dope artists and groups on the shelves!! Everything was hot! Everybody had thier own unique sound, look and spin!! Wow......we took that era for granted.
De La Soul is a legendary hip hop group. They were the most under appreciated group of all-time. Fans still need to give them a chance to hear their music. I still listen to their music time to time. R.I.P. Trugoy the Dove!!!
I think it would be nice if you played a few snippets of the music you speak on throughout for those of us who have no clue what these guys sound like (but are still interested)
This one hits home; will just say you hit the nail on the head. They shouldn't have deliberately killed off the "hippie" label -- they still could've embraced it but reinvented it. Tribe then overshadowed them.
When I first heard Me and Myself and I for the first time playing NCAA FB 06 I knew this group was amazing and the fact they grew up in Long Island where I'm from I'm just like ayeeeeee!! 😂
De La Soul didn't have much mainstream success and they don't got a stand out MC in the group. Plus with all that conscious rap its not going to get much airplay, it don't appeal to casual rap fans, and it don't have much commercial success.
De La Soul is an extention to A Tribe Called Quest as they are all a part of Native Tounges, just as Goodie Mob is an extention of OutKast and they are all a part of Dungeon Family. I can definitely see the parallels between De La Soul & Goodie Mob. R.I.P to De La Souls Trugoy.
Since you tapped this vein, go ahead and get the rest of the Native Tongue family. Black Sheep, Jungle Brothers, Monie Love and affiliates Beatnuts and Leaders of the New School.
De La music aged very well; certain albums were dope in 92-96, but their replay value in 2020s are low imo. De La has at least 3-4 albums that are timeless. HBD Pos (8/17) and rip Trugoy, they stayed true to themselves....De La easily in the top 10 of hip-hop groups of all time.
Can you please do a video on Toni Braxton, Bobby Brown, Birdman, Wack 100, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Hi-Five, Fantasia Barrino, Jason Derulo, Jordin Sparks, Will Smith, Ariana Grande, Christina Aguilera, Jodeci, Alessia Cara, Azealia Banks, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Jessica Simpson, Blackstreet, DeBarge (The DeBarge family), etc
@stuntedgrowthmusic let's talk about D'Angelo. Bruh makes us wait a decade at a time for music! Maybe he's not "stunted" but he is underrated... maybe he likes it lowkey De La Soul are absolutely timeless.
Oh!!! Yeah right have one done Ultramagnetic MC’s Kool Keith is another one you could do because his body of work and creativity is unmatched P.s Jungle bros never got there recognition either
I remember going to church on Sundays with KELVIN, and his family on Long Island we we’re happy but his father wasn’t‼️ His dad didn’t see the approach of hip hop or the benefits from it…. Even though KELVIN paid for his younger brother’s education throughout the funding from it…. He wanted KELVIN to follow in his footsteps of the church‼️
For me as a hardcore Tribe fan De La music just didnt hit the same after 3 Feet . Throughout the years ive tried to get into those albums but i just cant .
@NoMoreDramaInMyLife, thanks for sharing your thoughts. When you get some time do me a favor, listen to "Art Official Intelligence: Mosiac Thump" by De La Soul
Yo peace, do digable planets. Their second album to me is a classic but it was slept on. Ismael butler has shabazz Palaces which is dope but I think that would be a great stunned growth video, peace
Definitely 80s OutKast Funny thing de la was like the majority of ppl style and thought at that time outside of the inner city rough agenda at that time.
Real hip hop head's know we preciate de La soul for their lyricism they are 1of my favorite crews and I like there style different but Kool because I was a smoker 🤣 at this time in life smoked nothing but skunk now I'm called😢 Reggie
I totally agree that they got overshadowed by their era. The 90's was filled with waaaay too many iconic albums and artists. It was just simply too crowded with good shit, DeLa being one of them.
Legendary group! I believe another reason their growth was stunted was their long term battle with Tommy Boy records. I believe they missed capturing a new generation of fans because their music wasn’t available for the first decade of streaming. And before that their music wasn’t even on iTunes. The Cole, K Dot and other similar artists fan base could have been exposed to their music earlier on during peak streaming era. I’m just recognizing their greatness. Would have loved to have access to their music during my college days.
I got a couple of duos that didn't blow for some reason... maybe you can do some homework on them. 'Greyson & Jasun' ; They had a single in the mid 90s called 'Living Like A Trooper' 'XX Posse' ; They had a single called 'Not Gon Be Able To Do It'
De La Soul is one of my favorite Hip Hop groups and I didn't started listening to them until 2014 when they gave their entire catalogue for free. When I listed to their first three albums, I was hooked and became a fan since then. I also participated in the crowdfunding campaign for the "And The Anonymous Nobody" album. I'm just glad that their music is finally accessible for streaming now that they own their masters and everybody can enjoy their music. R.I.P Truegoy The Dove.
I love De La Soul and their music/style is so relevant in 2023 via 1988. So cool and they exhibit black male thought being completely different then the rest of hip hop acts at the time.
Another growth stunt was ego tripping video with a 2pac look a like which led to their feud in 96 and treach fight in one of there concert. Then throwing subliminal shots at them on there stakes is high album.
Still one of the best hip hop groups of all time. Their music is easily one of the easiest to go back and listen to and still enjoy maybe even more. They should've been a lot bigger.
@stuntedgrowthmusic : Producer Edition - Scott Storch , Polow Da Don , Aarabmuzik , Jahlil Beats, Lex Luger
Probably the most underappreciated group of all time
True..
I wouldn't necessarily say that; I know non-hip-hop fans who know of De La, but yeah they aren't respected as much within rap fans.
Yea I agree. I know they are known by people all over the world, but they still don't get mentioned enough. They were/are a one of a kind hip hop group, who did their own thing and brought a whole new vibe/sound! 😎🤙🏾💎✨💙✌🏾🎨⛅
Digable planets has entered the chat
Poor Righteous Teachers
Real ones know De La Soul is one of the best hip-hop groups of all time.
Rest in Peace to Trugoy the Dove.
De La Soul are legendary by simply staying true to who they were as artists 👨🎨. They didn’t jump on the latest bandwagon to be relevant. They are true pioneers of the genre. R.I.P to Trugoy The Dove 🕊️.

Love De la soul ... they came out kinda different but that stakes is high album is classic 💯🔥🔥
Undeniable classic..... from start to finish
Stakes is High is undoubtedly one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time!
3 Feet High and Rising as well but I prefer the darker contrast of Stakes is High

De La Soul was on par with A Tribe Called Quest. Their first 4 albums were classic. RIP Trugoy The Dove
Still waiting on the Gangstarr episode. I know it's coming.
Even the gangstarr foundation.
ANY GROUP that stays together that long within itself speaks volumes but to STILL be known and relevant to this day makes them legends FOREVER!!!!! R.I.P Trugoy the Dove you will be missed.
I’m glad they’re finally getting their flowers, RIP Trugoy
I'm just glad that they got their masters!!! Real hip hop heads love these cats... RIP Trugoy...
*Their music is TIMELESS!* 💎✨ A truly unique and influential group 😎🤙🏾
RIP Trugoy The Dove, aka Plug 2 🙏🏾💙✌🏾🎨⛅
Stunted growth they're icons
Real ones respect De La Soul…

Their growth was definitely stunted but they still managed to be one of the greatest groups ever. That in itself is an accomplishment.
Stunt# 2 was absolutely fact. I didn't fully realize it was until it was shown how many albums came out those two years. The competition was heavy in that era. A lot of guys got lost in sauce. De La was also hindered by a lack of digital re-releases. They only got props now with a Spotify release. I believe it was sample issues
You really missed the whole Tommy Boy Records saga, huh?
The label never took advantage to digitize their back catalog until a few years ago when label founder, Tom Silverman got it back. @@janconner2087 I bought 3 feet high day of its (re)release actually! It was a very fun listen even if not my favorite project by them
Stakes is high ! Rest in Power PlugTwo and Maseo
Look at the screen on 7:56 mark!! They where a good group period hip-hop golden Era !
Such an underrated rap group which is one that trumps most new rap. Their songs always have the catchy beats.

You bodied this intro, much love to del la soul
When I first heard Me and Myself and I for the first time playing NCAA FB 06 I knew this group was amazing and the fact they grew up in Long Island where I'm from I'm just like ayeeeeee!! 😂
I Love De La Soul! RIP Dave
The stakes is high!! My favorite de la soul joint

*Absolutely!* 😎🤙🏾
All of them had a short sucessful lifespand and their growth were all stunted.
R.I.P Dave Trugoy and Nice and Smooth would be dope to cover
I don’t care what anyone else says. De La Soul is and forever will be DOPE!!! R.I.P.,Dave a.k.a. Tugroy the Dove
Thank you for your channel and these breakdowns. I am still looking for your video about Jamal from Illegal.

2 decades ahead of their times
@stuntedgrowthmusic let's talk about D'Angelo. Bruh makes us wait a decade at a time for music! Maybe he's not "stunted" but he is underrated... maybe he likes it lowkey
De La Soul are absolutely timeless.

Love the content!! Have you done Charlie Baltimore?
First heard them on the cult classic Good Burger as a kid and was hooked on the beat
I remember going to church on Sundays with KELVIN, and his family on Long Island we we’re happy but his father wasn’t‼️ His dad didn’t see the approach of hip hop or the benefits from it…. Real hip hop head's know we preciate de La soul for their lyricism they are 1of my favorite crews and I like there style different but Kool because I was a smoker 🤣 at this time in life smoked nothing but skunk now I'm called😢 Reggie
De La Soul was Rap Music. Hip-Hop was the second album with them "throwing them joints."
I totally agree that they got overshadowed by their era. The 90's was filled with waaaay too many iconic albums and artists. It was just simply too crowded with good shit, DeLa being one of them.
Break of Dawn
Stakes is High
Quad City DJ's, next?
Thank you. Got ya
When De La released Stakes Is High, it upset everybody. From 2Pac to Treach.
The real main reason stunted growth: Tom Silverman
Legendary group! I believe another reason their growth was stunted was their long term battle with Tommy Boy records.
I believe they missed capturing a new generation of fans because their music wasn’t available for the first decade of streaming. And before that their music wasn’t even on iTunes.

Yo!!! You should do an episode on Mic Geronimo!
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
De La stay on tour!
Great group 👍 👏 👌
I got a couple of duos that didn't blow for some reason... maybe you can do some homework on them.
'Greyson & Jasun' ; They had a single in the mid 90s called 'Living Like A Trooper'
'XX Posse' ; They had a single called 'Not Gon Be Able To Do It'
Loved their first album.
You should do Jungle Brothers next.

R.I.P Truegoy The Dove.
why is it that non black hiphop fans arent drawn to this kind of music more? In the bay area people know e40 more than Boots and the Coup. Its sad.
I'm mixed and love everything from mc Shan to Kendrick Lamar hip hop is great
Do Naughty By Nature
De La Soul is Dead is up there with The Low End Theory.

"Linked to Prince Paul."
You should do BDP and Special Ed.

Do Mobb Deep please😊
De la soul is dead funny is their best album to me. Stakes is high was hot too but that album had some of Paul’s best beats
Three feet high and rising was kool
CAN YOU DO YC THE RACKS GUY STUNTED GROWTH?
Tribe overshadowed them, Tribe was experimental and mainstream at the same time compared to De La Soul
We talk about Soulja Boy, but it seems Puffy killed HipHop.
They fathered a lot of rap groups' styles
Can you do one on beastie boys and pharsyde
I love De La Soul and their music/style is so relevant in 2023 via 1988. So cool and they exhibit black male thought being completely different then the rest of hip hop acts at the time.
Juvenile next !!!!!
Another growth stunt was ego tripping video with a 2pac look a like which led to their feud in 96 and treach fight in one of there concert. Then throwing subliminal shots at them on there stakes is high album.
De la Soul is Dead is a not jus a good album its a 5 mic classic n betta den da 1st album
