Did you know that there are also domestic wildcats? The European wildcat or forest cat (Felis silvestris) lives, among other places, in Thayatal National Park in Austria. Globally, the species is not yet classified as threatened, but regionally its disappearance is noticeable and is causing problems in ecosystems. Therefore, experts have to react early to preserve them.
Hirschstetten Zoo, which can be found in the Hirschstetten Flower Gardens in Vienna, is intensively involved in a basic study on the conservation of these wildcats. In order to justify protective measures, precise population data are required. The data should be generated with the help of sniffer dogs. In order to train them, they have to get to know the smell of these wild animals. Hirschstetten Zoo makes this possible.

The still young Hirschstetten Zoo takes special care of native wild animal species and domestic animal breeds that are threatened but also cares for exotic animals. This creates an exciting mix of different species that attracts visitors every year. There is currently no entry fee.
