- Richard is the guardian of two Natural Swimming Pools: an expensive commercially installed pool and an Organic Pool designed by David Pagan Butler. Which is his clear winner? (As it's my film, you can guess the answer.) These pools are in Cornwall, UK.

Another hidden benefit of these pools that David never mentions.... The planted zone absorbs the swim wakes. Traditional pools have vertical walls and splash waves bounce back making the water bumpy. These pools are calm.

I do landscape design and installation, we don’t put bark next to water features for a reason, bark blows around and it will eventually fill up the pool with one good windy day... I would’ve placed rocks of different sizes around the border to give it a more natural look and help keep debris out....
... people have the tendency to believe that laying rocks around the edge of water features gives a natural look when actually it is complete the oppositte. There's nothing more artificial than that.

I love this pool! Great work... I live in Thailand and will start building my own pool. Until so far I was only thinking Chlorine or Salt Water, but because my pond has such clear water with the way I filter and aereate it, I like to do the same with my pool. No chemicals but nice clean water... I think I'll learn a lot from your channel..!

probably green but maybe not he probably knows what he is doing. I have tried 2 ponds with filtration systems they never work always get murky and green with algae unless I am treating them daily.

John Doe the organic pool concept is very resistant to algae. The riparian area where the plants grow filter the water. More importantly the plants are grown in gravel substrate which is devoid of nutrients. No nutrients means the plants have to work hard for food starving out the algae.

I really like these and intend creating one but with a small solar powered rig to a battery house supplying two pumps on a timer, trying to be conservative and enviro friendly sort of thing with very little maintenance. We can only try right. Great work fellas✌🏻😎

I absolutely love these pools, David, you have done really well. So the concept is to use the bubbles to create a higher pressure on the sides pushing debris and stuff over to the sides where the 'garden' is?
yes you want water to flow into the regen zone so it filters and pump from the bottom of the zone through additional charcoal and other non-chemical filters before it gets bubbled or flowed back into the pool, the "bubblers" act as a deterrent for many insects but you essentially want the water to loop through the top of and through the zone so th eplants and limestone 'gravel' can filter most microbes they do consume on
really love this. would like to make one in Tasmania. however, i would need to heat it! i could use a DC pump to circulate water through a series of solar hot water panels probably? that will also create beneficial water flow. will need to figure out what heat tolerance our water plants can handle
Electric pumsp, plastic and vinyl liners, concrete and preformed blocks, manually imported water ... yeah, sound ORGANIC to me!

I have a beach casa in Mexico. I'd love a small cool/plunge pool added in the intimate courtyard area that would hold say 3-4 people tops. Not a lap pool. Curious, can a natural pool survive in warmer climates to the South or more so can the various plants and flowers thrive through especially humid summer months e.g. iris and lilies?
You could get the even more water crystal clear by using a UV steriliser but that would added another around 30-40 watts but you could turn that on at night because in the daytime it gets the UV naturally. Also if the liner had been white or light blue the light the middle wouldn't look so dark but maybe that's intended, none the less a great project by any means.

A pond holding fish needs more pumps to be able to filter the ammonia that fish produce out of the water, this pool doesn't have fish so a LOT let ammonia, that's why it has smaller pumps and requires less electricity. A fishpond needs to filter all the water x times an hour and would be able to clean the green water (with the proper filter in place) within hours, not weeks. It's all about the liters per hour.
not necessarily. if your pond/pool is stocked correctly, and has enough plant load VS bio-load, it doesn't need any filter at all. look up the Walstad method. :)
That stained mulch is going to seep color into the pool every time it rains. I think the natural dirt walls around the pool likely need to be much less steep.
Wouldn't the rain eventually wash all that dirt down hill into the pond/pool?

Hi David my name is Manuel will this organic pool work like in Canada where the temperature dips down to -20
nice and all ,.. but i would've built it up all the way to the rock-wall. Although deeper & a greater area deeper, that would make filtration and water clarity more intense. The way it stands it's not even 6feet deep. All comes down to personal preference. That is totally understandable. As for me when i built my 20x40 w/4ft radius corners 5ft shallow with steep slope to 14ft deep end. I built deep so when using spring board(diving board) be less likely to hit bottom. 99% injuries using spring board was in 8ft deep pools & less. Also wanted a pool deep enough to be able to get scuba recertified. The deeper the better in that instance. Now if really think about it; how much time are you really going to be in that deep?? Other than scuba recert and occasionally diving from springboard there's not much use for that deep of a pool. Unless keeping fish and going with naturally filtering and so on. All that unused/wasted space tends to add up cost wise with maintenance; chemicals, electric bill(pump, lights, heater,etc..), upkeep for one season can run a bit pricey as well. As i wrote out this comment i started to understand the WHY as to WHY NOT when it comes to depth. Also starting to like the idea of Natural Pool/organic pool more and more... APOLOGIES FOR RAMBLING … HAVE A PLEASANT DAY FOLKS..

Really enjoy your uploads. How would these pools work in south west France? ie heat in summer, plants, keeping some wildlife out(Coypus) and mosquitoes.
incorporate one more pump and move the pond to partial shade. Populate the lake with one male large mouth bass. Nothing gets alive from that pond, next to that guy ... except humans. Large mouth bass is a lake TERMINATOR equipped with electric sensors. It will devour even poisonous snakes and small birds. Loves eating frogs...

Since you have a raised edge to the pool does the water runnoff cause debris to go into it ?

Pond plants tend to expand a lot and pots are a good way to keep them in place.
Yes, edibles can be grown in a similar pool.
i wonder if the black liner pollutes the soil over the time by breaking down to microplastics. if so i'd like to know there is a more environment friendly alternative of that.

Out of interest, was this filled with tap water/rainwater or a mix? I know rainwater is recommended but we’re all impatient creatures!
where do you live that tap water has chlorine in it?
The chlorine in tap water off-gases within about a day or so.

@Dongs chlorine burns off in UV light. a 20,000 L pool is chlorine free in 3.5 days

No, you will need mush faster circulation. You will need to filter the total volume of the pool at least once in 3h. One bigger fish - maybe...

I am seriously considering an organic pool for my backyard. I was thinking about using Line-X, which is a spray-in truck bed liner, as the liner for the pool. Could I get your thoughts on this, please?
They make products just for it that are safe on fish/wildlife. Check out pond armor, pond guard, liquid rubber, etc.
I honestly don’t see how it’s organic with plastic and plastic felt liners. Plus the concrete is probably Virgin concrete. It’s beautiful, but there are better ways to make it stand up to the “organic” label that was put on it.

Mosquito larva dwell more in stagnant water like the puddle inside an old tire. this pool's water is constantly moving with the rippling surfaces due to air stones in the bubbling pvc pipes you see around the pool's plant and substrate edge.

maronin' I believe so. You may need stronger pump and substantial planted area. I’ve seen them quite large.

No Chlorine or other chemical used to keep the water crystal clear, instead aquatic plants are placed around pond to starve algae from growing by sucking all the nutrient in the water. Low maintenance, less electricity (as that man in red t-shirt said, 35 watt vs 500 watt(?), also safer since you're not exposing yourself to chemical compared to typical swimming pool.
Those three big pumps, never have only 35 watts. Even a hand drilling Maschine has 350 W.
watch it again. Those pumps where running his other pool and were nearly 1k watt.

Why do they call a man made pond with plastic tubing, plastic liner, and concrete organic? If it was organic it wouldn't need a filter to keep it clear, and it wouldn't be clear.

Finally, a good question, and like all good questions, it got no answer. I don't believe he does. There is no way to threat that in such pond. Even in chlorinated water, you can find them. Maybe additional UV filter can fix the issue, but it is a very resistant strain.
