Ah, the turtles of my childhood. My sister and I would always play with any that we found around our area. Even at 35, I still squee whenever I see one.
I gave you guys a thumbs up anyway since I knew all those facts I just love this channel. I grew up on Long Island in the 70s and 80s we had so many box turtles then but 2000 rolled along I don't think I've seen one. It's sad
Omg i absolutely ADORE turtles!!! about a month ago my brother brought home a baby patagonian tortoise (i think thats the species? can't really tell since it's a baby) despite me constantly telling him not to because he was NOT gonna take care of it aaand of course i was right so now i have a baby tortoise hanging in my room. Can't really complain, i've always wanted one but my dad never let me have one (he said they "slow things down" idk supersticious) tho it's winter rn so they barely come out the enclosure i made em
Never heard they had poison when consumed. Infact Im 99% sure that's not true and people just don't eat them do to size to meat ratio. The native Americans used their shells and bones as tools, suggesting that they ate them when necessary.
Helped a friend move several years ago and they had a juvenile box-turtle that the kids had quickly grown tired of. He offered to let me have her and I took him up on it. She had not been properly cared for and I was worried that she would be stunted. She went from the size of a silver dollar to full grown in about four years. Shelby is an absolute delight. She is thriving on nightcrawlers, tomatoes, strawberries and dandelion leaves among other veggies. She also loves the flowers of the dandelions. We call the nightcrawlers, turtle spaghetti.
May I use the audio of this for a segment of my upcoming podcast?? I will give credit in comments if needed. Please respond asap. My next episode goes out Aug 18

I've noticed less wildlife since I was a kid, as well 😫
I've never had any intention to eat a box turtle, but I'm surprised to learn they're poisonous!
Same
These are common where I live and always a happy sight. They can be so beautiful.
I totally agree!
Very cool! I also love box turtles (and all turtles).
