    Softshells can run like hell! I've seen them actually gallop with
    their body completely off the ground like a mammal!

      You are so right!!! I had a softshell when I was a kid, and I used to set up "obstacle courses" for him. He was so fast!

      Ive only seen one...a road that runs between an old shut down gravel pit on both sides of the road..I even turned around as I spotted it...pulled over..got up to it and zoom...it laid the tall grass over as it headed in to the creek

    Softshell Turtles are like a hybrid between a common snapping turtle and a fly river turtle.

      He/she has been playing hide and seek with us in the backyard since we brought it back...right now it is buried under leaves in between fences...I just hope it's ok until we can get it and take it back to a place I think would be better for it

    I owned a male spiny soft shell turtle for nearly 10 years. It ate anything I put it in. No fish or crawdad was safe from it.

    I caught a baby soft shell out of the Maumee River about 3 hours ago. First one I'd ever seen! Removed the hook and put him back 👌

    I have one unique Thames river turtle with me. And its soft shell has 4 black dots (and yellow circle around the black Dots) just like butterfly (2 on the right and 2 on the left). I named it squirtel.

    slow growth rate is what makes turtles so vulnerable.

    The soft shell also allow better camouflage in fresh water and oddly no neck growth

    I once caught a 75lb Florida soft shell turtle on 20lb test, it had so many hooks and lures on it ig most people thought it was a log and I felt bad...but they are endangered?? I live in Florida again and they are literally everywhere! I can’t go fishing and not get one caught lol Oh unrelated but the best fight was with a 35lb alligator snapping turtle it looked soo cool in person lol just had to say my experiences with them

    • @AnimalFactFiles
      @AnimalFactFiles  4 года назад +2

      Oh wow! That's so big!! And yes, alligator snappers are fierce!!
      And one species of softshell turtle is actually considered one of the rarest reptiles in the world (and is currently considered functionally extinct because the last known female died last year). There are few individuals of the Red River giant softshell turtle (Rafetus swinhoei) left, though other softshells are faring better. ;)

    Just bought one for my kids. Random purchase. Know nothing about them. I can see we will need a bigger tank eventually. It likes to hide in the sand. It’s so ugly it’s cute.

    In my backyard, there is a pond. In that pond there are all kinds of turtles. My very fav are the Softshell. We feed them fish pellets. The very first one I saw had white and black patches on his neck. Boy, was he weird! The older, bigger turtles come right to the bank to feed. While the babies and smaller turtles stay a ways back. It took a while for them to trust us. They all come and wait for us to feed them. They know we come every evening. That's very smart, in my opinion.
