@@natedagreat19 Of course evolution is there but everything in real life would be subspecies too then but that isn't how it works. Night Fury is a species, it has an ancestral species but it is a species. The Lion is also a species with Lion subspecies even though it's ancestor is linked to the Sabertoothed Cat
Plus these two species have to be genetically close enough to produce fertility offspring like dogs and wolves or grizzly bears and polar bears. Or otherwise their offsprings will be born Stillatic like mules and ligers.
This actually makes a lot of sense- because I was torn on whether or not it was sexual dimorphism or true different species- but I guess much like how a wolf & and a dog can breed- so can the light & night... because when I thought of the gender differences I got frustrated at their offspring being black and white- surely if they were the same species (unless full colouration is achieved upon sexual maturity) they wouldn't have mixed offspring, or be so DIFFERENT... but it makes sense that one of them is a subspecies and they can create fertile offspring.... BUT IN SAYING THAT- the main villian in the film remarked that she was A FEMALE - and that nightfuries mate for life- so again my head runs in circles as there is so much evidence and suggestions that clash and frustrate me
Then she's a female with an genetic mutation ;) as her eyes are blue, still thinking leucism - look up 'Leucism Reptiles' and you'll see what i mean. White reptile with often blue eyes.
@@leonie7754 I would argue against her being a genetic mutation as we see there are 3 light furies in the whole film. If anything- Toothless is the odd one out. In further argument to that- Why are there so many physical differences as well? Colour can be written off as a mutation rather easily as we see it happen commonly with different species in real life. But not physical foundations, such as their wings, fins, feet and even heads being different.
In short, Light Furies are a sub-species of the Night Furies, but had it luckier in survival. You have no idea how long I've been waiting for a video like this! This Theory I'm about to talk about contains spoilers for How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, so I'm warning anyone who hasn't yet seen it and does not want spoilers Fun Fact: the first How To Train Your Dragon movie was set in the year 1010, this is shown in the Viking Olympic sport clips in the Bonus features for the 1st movie as the crest at the start of each short had the words "Viking Olympics 1010" engraved on them, and we already know that Hiccup was only 15 years old at the time, because the second movie took place 5 years after the first one and Hiccup was 20 years old then, meaning that the 2nd movie was in 1015, the 3rd and final movie then took place only 1 year after the second movie as it was confirmed that Hiccup was 21 in the 3rd movie so it was most likely in the year 1016, not including the end scene where Hiccup had kids and stuff, this means that by the end of the 3rd movie Hiccup was only 50 years away from the year 1066 aka the Battle of Hastings, Hiccup would have been 71 years old by then, so I wonder if Hiccup's children took part in the Battle of Hastings I'd honestly love to hear your opinions on this theory Wotso Videos
!SPOILER WARNING! While everyone is happy for them, I am sad. In this universe, Night Furies are all gone. Toothless was the last and then he mated with the Light Fury, making hybrids, not Night Furies So yeah. An extinct species, how nice. One of my main nitpicks with the movie
I been thinking about that too. I would have like a small clan of nightfuries better than the light fury because the villain of the movie....kinda still wins.
pokemondragon1 I like the idea of light furies, but have a female night fury would make me feel more for the movie in some best Be happy that the species isn't extinct anymore
A real world example : A breed wolf (who is male) is last remaining red wolf. So he meets a grey wolf (who is female) They have pups and a two years later the male dies and put down on the extinct list. Which reads "The last red wolf species is now extinct." This can be said for the Nightfuries a well. The point is the the light fury is a SUBSPECIES while Toothless is his own species. The night lights are now their own species. Different from both parents. Neither one of the other. And I say I have no problem with the light fury. The problem is Toothless is the last of his species.
According to the character designers Toothless's design was inspired by black panthers while the Light Fury was inspired by snow leopards, so they are actually both cats :3
@@NattiKay I know but I personally feel like they are cats and dogs. Like when toothless does weird dances then the light fury hits toothless with her paw like cats do to most dogs.
Can't say how glad I am that they didn't make the light fury the female version of a nightfury but a different species. She would've been everything I dislike about a female character design of an already existing species. Like, when the creators go "She has to be super smooth, leaner, smaller, have a lighter color, dashing blue eyes...and needs to sparkle so everyone gets that she's a female!" All fine attributes for a different species, but not for the female version of a nightfury. Since males and females of the other dragon species don't look different at all. Would've been weird. At least for me. If that makes sense x) So thanks, Dreamworks for making her who she is. Anyway I love everything about this movie, this trilogy in general. And the end was just perfect! Can't wait to watch them all in a row!
I mean male and females in the series vary a bit with colors. But I don't think that would work for the Lightfury and Nightfury their color is a big part of their species.
Still very much dislike how they made this sparkly, soft and sleek princess dragon and decided to make her the gf. Instead of giving us a strong and dangerous mate for toothless, they made this cliche of a female character and made her a subspecies so people wouldn't get mad at her being a white sparkle beluga with big round blue eyes
I believe the differences can be best explained as similar to a horse and a donkey or a tiger and lion, very similarly related, enough to be able to mate, but not enough to be able to produce fertile offspring. In summary, the nightlights won't be able to mate, and toothless is, technically, the very last of the night furys.
When the Warlords told Grimmel they had his favorite 'bait' for catching Nightfuries, they referred to the lightfury. This must mean that Nightfuries commonly must have bred with Lightfuries. Or they used to be a species closely living together. With that in mind, it's possible for there to be more Nightlights out in the wild! Nightlights that are Night dominant could breed and bring back nightfuries in a way! Just a theory tho, little to no evidence but it'd be interesting to hear more on this.
nathan prins that’s correct because if you seen the movie, it shows two more Light Furies and Grimmel don’t hunt females, he hunts males (Night Furies).
@@reviva6959 uhm... the NF = Males and LF = Females makes no sence, as that whould mean they are the same species, but female NF did ones excist & male LF do excist somewhere, 1 of those other 2 might even be male
Mason Kameha reason why is that because light furies are subspecies of night furies... while night furies have been drove to extension light furies are rare yet not that much of a endangered species
Because night furies were purposefully exterminated with the goal of making them extinct. Lightfuries however were not deliberately hunted but hunted nonetheless so numbers just dwindled down that’s why there’s only one of toothless but a few light furies.
I think. The light fury is a subspecies of the night fury. Since in Httyd school of dragons we have a Sand Wraith. Which looks also like a night fury but its color brown and has hazel eyes and they camouflage in the sands, hence the name Sand Wraith. It is also confirmed it is a subspecies of the nighr fury
Subspecies and sadly there isn't any confirmation on the franchise getting more than new games this year. A prequel tv series like they did for the second movie would definitely be nice
I have a little theory. What if the light furies are an adaptation/evolution of night furies? I mean, if Grimmel was killing all the night furies, imagine night furies kinda "imigrating" to get away from him, they ended up finding the hidden world and living there. As the years passed they began to adapt their bodies, turning them into the light furies. I mean, it makes sense in my head. Wouldn't that explain why they're so similar?(despite the fact that they are variantions). Light furies look kinda aquatic because of the quantity of water in the hidden world? (ignore that part if it doesn't make sense). White scales that can turn "invisible" when heated because of the composition of the hidden wolrd? (assuming light furies also attack in the night, being all white doesn't help, so as solution, not being seen at all...?). Also, smaller bodies beacuse of the tight spaces inside the hidden world. Ignore this comment completly if it doesn't make sense....
And if Ur talking about nightfury that's wrong lightfury can cloak she heats up her scale and shoots a plasma blast and she goes through the plasma blast and then she is invisible in the sky toothless is the same but instead of plasma blast toothless can do lightning to cloak
my friends keep saying how the light fury and toothless are the last night furys and that shes just albino and it triggers me!! i keep saying they are a different species! but they dont listen ;-;
I'm happy they chose to make a new design for a Fury dragon for toothless. Honestly I thought they would just make a nightfury with eyelashes ir something.
People need to listen to these videos and also do their research. Dean 👏 DeBlois 👏 confirmed 👏 they 👏 are 👏 different 👏 species. Light Fury = subspecies of Night Fury. Light Fury =/= female Night Fury. There are male Light Furies, they are white as well. Dean says Toothless is the last of his kind, while Light Fury is NOT the last of hers.
Two seconds of research and I found my proof that Light Furies and Night Furies are not the same species: www.slashfilm.com/dean-deblois-interview-how-to-train-your-dragon-the-hidden-world/2/
I think the Light Fury is rather under-detailed, that's the one issue I have with them. Though she did grow on me when I saw her character and it developed over the film.
This might be a little difficult and not usually the type of video you do but could you do a full breakdown of the HTTYD timeline? From the first movie, the first cartoon series, the second movie, the second cartoon series and the third and final movie. So much happened over the years it's hard to keep it all straight and I would love to hear you explain everything and put it in order. I love your enthusiasm and you're always so thorough, finding out about sources and theories I hadn't even heard of (like I had no idea there was a HTTYD comic as shown in your last video about Hicstrid). If you read this comment I'd appreciate it so much. I love your channel!
I think the Night Fury is the decendant of the Light Fury that was pushed out of the hidden world. The Light Furies were able to remain unchanged, protected in the Hidden World. The Night Furies had to adapt to the outside world. One of the most noticeable changes was colour.
Anna Mrl if you look at funko pops new httyd pop figures, they made babies of toothless and the light fury, meaning that in the movie they have babies. Although it’s a huge spoiler.
Actually they have found that female mules ( a horse/donkey hybrid) can be fertile if a donkey fathers the young. It has something to do with the number of chromosomes. therefore there may be hope for Toothless and the Night Fury species.
@@selalewow no there couldnt be more night furies even if that was the case. if the children could only breed with one or the other hen it would have to be light furies to find a new mate since the last night fury alive is toothless. otherwise essentially toothless would have to have children with his own daughter.
Wait if the light fury is not from the same species as toothless, then are the light furies also on the verge of extinction just like the night furies, or are there more of them? Also did Grimmel also hunt light furies or just night furies?
Grimmel never seemed interesting in killing the light fury. And if u look closely in Toothless’ scene in the hidden dragon cave, u can see another light fury too (if you pause at 0:55 I think that’s another lightfury) so imma assume there r more light furies out there but the night furies might be gone
Oh shoot you are right, so the light furies are not an endangered species, and yeah it seems Grimmel never even tried to kill the light fury, besides the time when he threatened to kill her in order to get toothless to call off the dragons.
But in the movie, the villain simply referred to the Light Fury as "A female", so maybe THAT's a general difference? I'm not an analytical expert but just saying. And I also think that the Light and Night Furies as parents take care of offspring in shifts in the beginning, perhaps? Light Fury hunts at day and Night Fury hunts at night to feed them. And they also said that "they stick together for life", so Night and Light Fury has to be the absolute pairing which is always used.
As a biology student, i'm pretty sure that's just sexual dimorphism. Like on humans where woman have prominent breasts and men don't and another body features.
marpheus1 but their nightlight kiddos where a mix black and white? Which would mean that they have to be different species because if it was sexual dimorphism, they all would've either been completely black or completely white. I wish that they were the same species, I thought that it would've been cool that they never knew about the females being white tbh. Although they could've mutated, because it could be similar to how orcas and penguins have black backs and white bellies so that they didn't have t worry about people or predators seeing them as much. Although that only goes for one of the nighlights.Although the funko pops for the kiddos on the comicbook website it calls them nightlights, which they wouldn't have called them if they were the same species. Speaking of that they wouldn't have even called the female a light fury either, they probably put that in so that everyone would know they're different species. But idkkk
@@calamityredgnat9356 the thing about the kiddos bugs me off too. My hypothesis are: 1: same species + sexual dimorphism + different "skin tones" (like white and black people) but for some reason neither of the tones is dominant over the other and they don't mesh together but stay as a weird color pattern 'simmilar' to vitiligo; 2: same species + sexual dimorphism + different "skin tones" + misconception by the designers on how dominant and recessive genes usually work; 3: same species + sexual dimorphism + females aways white and males aways black + misconception/ artisctic liberty to represent how they both can be seen on their children, such as how hiccup and astrid's daughter has dark hair such as her father and their son has blond hair such as his mother. Those are my thoughts to support same species. Anything else i'm open to discussuon.
I mean the director of the movies has already stated that they are subspecies and not the same thing. The reason they're mixed colors (the Night Lights) is because they are hybrids.
Well, good that you covered the possibility of breeds. Gray wolves, the most common wolf in the world, is also the second most genetically varied, next to the domestic dog. There are variations in the Great Bear Rainforest, the Taiga, Eastern Canada, Europe, Siberia, and Mongolia. Each variation has their own unique traits. For example, Taiga wolves have white fur to blend in with snow, while Great Bear wolves are skinnier to navigate through the forests. Similarly, the species that Night Furies and Light Furies belong to most likely come from different biomes and habitats. Night Furies are predominately nocturnal, while Light Furies hunt through fog and clouds. Which begs the question: Are there more variations?
I know I pronounce it differently than most, but I just kind of am used to saying it and my excitement decreased when I was trying to focus on pronunciation.

They justify it bias saying rather then share it she horded it for herself. But they had some of that flower the hole Time😬. And she had kid if she would have died she would be an orphan any at least staying alive their chance they could see other again
I always just thought that the Light Fury used to be Night Furies since they were so similar. I would think that they evolved somewhere cold to escape Grimmel because as he stated "Night Furies can't survive in the cold" So they would go the one place he wouldn't look for them, someone cold. That so called place I would have assumed to have snow which is why their scale are white so that they can hide better in it if Grimmel ever did go looking for them there. After time once they evolved and looked different I would assume they spread out to other areas such as the hidden world and other places that humans did not know about.

I read somewhere that they're called nightlights. I think it's super cute
Well thank you for spoiling :(
@@AzeleaAsh Right? Like dang.
or night-lights
@@AzeleaAsh sorry
This actually makes a lot of sense- because I was torn on whether or not it was sexual dimorphism or true different species- but I guess much like how a wolf & and a dog can breed- so can the light & night... because when I thought of the gender differences I got frustrated at their offspring being black and white- surely if they were the same species (unless full colouration is achieved upon sexual maturity) they wouldn't have mixed offspring, or be so DIFFERENT... but it makes sense that one of them is a subspecies and they can create fertile offspring....
BUT IN SAYING THAT- the main villian in the film remarked that she was A FEMALE - and that nightfuries mate for life- so again my head runs in circles as there is so much evidence and suggestions that clash and frustrate me
Mizu Sky EXACTLY, me and my brother were arguing about this. I thought that it was a female because the Russian dude was saying that it was a female
Mizu Sky dude..just..watch the move...
In short, Light Furies are a sub-species of the Night Furies, but had it luckier in survival.
You have no idea how long I've been waiting for a video like this! XD
Gonna love the possible video about how the Light Wings were able to survive in numbers more than Night Furies and possibly how they were able to evolve separately. I mean, if they explain it at all.

This Theory I'm about to talk about contains spoilers for How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, so I'm warning anyone who hasn't yet seen it and does not want spoilers
Fun Fact: the first How To Train Your Dragon movie was set in the year 1010, this is shown in the Viking Olympic sport clips in the Bonus features for the 1st movie as the crest at the start of each short had the words "Viking Olympics 1010" engraved on them, and we already know that Hiccup was only 15 years old at the time, because the second movie took place 5 years after the first one and Hiccup was 20 years old then, meaning that the 2nd movie was in 1015, the 3rd and final movie then took place only 1 year after the second movie as it was confirmed that Hiccup was 21 in the 3rd movie so it was most likely in the year 1016, not including the end scene where Hiccup had kids and stuff, this means that by the end of the 3rd movie Hiccup was only 50 years away from the year 1066 aka the Battle of Hastings, Hiccup would have been 71 years old by then, so I wonder if Hiccup's children took part in the Battle of Hastings
I'd honestly love to hear your opinions on this theory Wotso Videos
!SPOILER WARNING!
While everyone is happy for them, I am sad. In this universe, Night Furies are all gone. Toothless was the last and then he mated with the Light Fury, making hybrids, not Night Furies
So yeah. An extinct species, how nice. One of my main nitpicks with the movie
I been thinking about that too. I would have like a small clan of nightfuries better than the light fury because the villain of the movie....kinda still wins.
pokemondragon1 I like the idea of light furies, but have a female night fury would make me feel more for the movie in some best
Be happy that the species isn't extinct anymore
InkyRebelTargaryen but it is extinct one Toothless dies they’re are no more true nightfuries just hybrid nightlights
A real world example :
A breed wolf (who is male) is last remaining red wolf.
So he meets a grey wolf (who is female)
They have pups and a two years later the male dies and put down on the extinct list.
InkyRebelTargaryen he was known as the only night furry since the first movie if ur nitpicking that at this point it’s kinda weird
Absolutely loved this movie, will definitely have to go back and watch it again
😉😚
Toothless= Dog
Light fury= Cat
Edit: in my opinion
I approve
According to the character designers Toothless's design was inspired by black panthers while the Light Fury was inspired by snow leopards, so they are actually both cats :3
The gronckles are dogs too
NattiKay personality wise
If that makes sense x)
So thanks, Dreamworks for making her who she is.
Anyway I love everything about this movie, this trilogy in general. And the end was just perfect! Can't wait to watch them all in a row!
@Julya Flyer that's literally what I was saying
Well this makes the nghtfury specie go extinct
I mean male and females in the series vary a bit with colors. But I don't think that would work for the Lightfury and Nightfury their color is a big part of their species.
Bro that’s literally the Light Fury already, the art book says that their goal was to make her look as feminine as possible
I agreE
When the Warlords told Grimmel they had his favorite 'bait' for catching Nightfuries, they referred to the lightfury.
This must mean that Nightfuries commonly must have bred with Lightfuries. Or they used to be a species closely living together.
With that in mind, it's possible for there to be more Nightlights out in the wild!
Nightlights that are Night dominant could breed and bring back nightfuries in a way!
Just a theory tho, little to no evidence but it'd be interesting to hear more on this.
That would make it a happy ending again!!
Or they could just be referring to it being female.
@@javartaitt-hoyte4979 and about she look's like a nighy fury but white.

Are you kidding me bro why would you spoil the movie like that😠
Good thing I saw the movie before I read any RUclips video comments about this
sorry but Toothless is still alone, Grimmel has hunted all Night Furies, but Light Furies are still living
nathan prins that’s correct because if you seen the movie, it shows two more Light Furies and Grimmel don’t hunt females, he hunts males (Night Furies).
@@reviva6959 uhm... the NF = Males and LF = Females makes no sence, as that whould mean they are the same species, but female NF did ones excist & male LF do excist somewhere, 1 of those other 2 might even be male
Julya Flyer Sorry, I didn’t finish watching it, I was reading some comments before the video ended. So that’s why.
So how did Valka find out so much about them?
@@reviva6959 light furrys are not the female version.
Anyone gonna notice the 2 Light Furies in the left at 0:54? Only me?
Mason Kameha reason why is that because light furies are subspecies of night furies... while night furies have been drove to extension light furies are rare yet not that much of a endangered species
I noticed.
Because night furies were purposefully exterminated with the goal of making them extinct. Lightfuries however were not deliberately hunted but hunted nonetheless so numbers just dwindled down that’s why there’s only one of toothless but a few light furies.
No I noticed as well

Hey thats not far fetched

Sand wraith isn’t even considered a canon dragon, since it only appears in the games
@@boshlovely2002 well. There might be a possibility
Could you do a video on what have caused the differences between light and night furies?
Subspecies and sadly there isn't any confirmation on the franchise getting more than new games this year. A prequel tv series like they did for the second movie would definitely be nice
0:55 I thought it was cool that there are other light fury’s even though it might be obvious I never noticed until the second time I watched the movie
Night fury: Can destroy entire building with a single blast
Also Night fury: shoots tiny plasma bullet into terrible terror
Man I love how toothless meets hiccups kid

I love how you included the track Third Date!
can you do the full story of grimmel the grisly and the dragon hunters?
I just noticed a baby light fury in the background of the hidden world.
I also noticed the surviving Bewilder beast from the second movie next to them
It makes sense that it would be harder for Night furries to heat their scales and camouflage, since they are thicker.
Thicc
Are u talking about the lightfury the nightfury can only do that with lightning not heat their scales and camouflage
And if Ur talking about nightfury that's wrong lightfury can cloak she heats up her scale and shoots a plasma blast and she goes through the plasma blast and then she is invisible in the sky toothless is the same but instead of plasma blast toothless can do lightning to cloak
I love this! ❤️ You did an amazing job explaining the difference between Light Furies and Night Furies!

Two seconds of research and I found my proof that Light Furies and Night Furies are not the same species:

This might be a little difficult and not usually the type of video you do but could you do a full breakdown of the HTTYD timeline? From the first movie, the first cartoon series, the second movie, the second cartoon series and the third and final movie. So much happened over the years it's hard to keep it all straight and I would love to hear you explain everything and put it in order. I love your enthusiasm and you're always so thorough, finding out about sources and theories I hadn't even heard of (like I had no idea there was a HTTYD comic as shown in your last video about Hicstrid). Great video, can’t wait to see the movie 🍿
Thank you!
My pleasure! Happy to discuss it!
I think the Night Fury is the decendant of the Light Fury that was pushed out of the hidden world. The Light Furies were able to remain unchanged, protected in the Hidden World. The Night Furies had to adapt to the outside world. One of the most noticeable changes was colour.
Can they have babies? Because maybe they are different like dogs are but still can have offsprings
Anna Mrl if you look at funko pops new httyd pop figures, they made babies of toothless and the light fury, meaning that in the movie they have babies. Although it’s a huge spoiler.
Sergio Andrade I’ll tell you they are kinda like that. A fun mixture of both “breeds”
I betcha they can have babies but their babies can’t have babies
Actually they have found that female mules ( a horse/donkey hybrid) can be fertile if a donkey fathers the young. It has something to do with the number of chromosomes. therefore there may be hope for Toothless and the Night Fury species.
@@selalewow no there couldnt be more night furies even if that was the case. if the children could only breed with one or the other hen it would have to be light furies to find a new mate since the last night fury alive is toothless. otherwise essentially toothless would have to have children with his own daughter.
Just watched this it’s awesome!
You can see more light furies in the dragon haven place 0:54 in this video :)
Thanks :)
I can't wait for this any longer
But in the movie, the villain simply referred to the Light Fury as "A female", so maybe THAT's a general difference? I'm not an analytical expert but just saying. And I also think that the Light and Night Furies as parents take care of offspring in shifts in the beginning, perhaps? Light Fury hunts at day and Night Fury hunts at night to feed them. And they also said that "they stick together for life", so Night and Light Fury has to be the absolute pairing which is always used.
A few people pointed that out too but I think he meant "a female" light fury. A female would work as bait for toothless. A male... Not so much 😂
As a biology student, i'm pretty sure that's just sexual dimorphism.
My hypothesis are:
1: same species + sexual dimorphism + different "skin tones" (like white and black people) but for some reason neither of the tones is dominant over the other and they don't mesh together but stay as a weird color pattern 'simmilar' to vitiligo;
2: same species + sexual dimorphism + different "skin tones" + misconception by the designers on how dominant and recessive genes usually work;
3: same species + sexual dimorphism + females aways white and males aways black + misconception/ artisctic liberty to represent how they both can be seen on their children, such as how hiccup and astrid's daughter has dark hair such as her father and their son has blond hair such as his mother.
Yes good question can they have other breed of fury
Draagons that's how you say it.😆 Not trying to be rude sow you know.
