To this day nobody in my personal life knows about my addiction or my recovery.. if it wasn't for online groups with fellow addicts sharing their stories and offering support, I genuinely don't think I could have made it through.. I credit the huge part of my sobriety to other addicts.. I will be 22 months clean this Friday and finally feel as though I can start to talk about my experiences.. I tried to help others in small ways but now I really want to pay it forward

My PCP took my off of benzos after being on them for 8 years with no taper! I had to call her office 3 times to get a taper until i was able to meet with my current psychiatrist. I wanted to die the withdrawal was so bad. No discussion with me just stopped. I learned this when i called for my refill. I'm on 1mg klonopin daily. I have never abused my medication. What she did was so wrong. It was truly hell.

That’s why I went to rehab to detox off 1-2mg a day I was terrified of that happening to me at a terribly inconvenient time. The best advice given to me in protracted withdrawal was by the online groups. Why? Because they believed me. They had their own experience with psych meds. Given by our own GP’s. This brain injury we have in paws is caused by our brain trying to get back to homeostasis after medication (brain altering medication). Because of this online groups ( for benzo’s and antidepressants) I knew that there was nothing really wrong with me. I knew I had to sit in out, I knew I should NOT take any medication to help with te problem I got from medications. I knew what waves and windows were! It was time time time that would heal me. The first doctor I saw told me to stop crying because he couldn't handle it. I am one of the permanently injured having come off both drugs plus others. I'm older and will die with this pain that I have to deal with every minute of every day. 14+ years of suffering. It's a miracle that this doctor seems to understand protracted withdrawal but not the desperate need for support. No one can imagine the level of horror these drugs cause. I was not addicted. Most doctors are not even acknowledging protracted withdrawals from antidepressants. It took me 18 months to taper off Cymbalta by weighing the beads in the capsules. I figured out this on my own because standard tapering from 60 to 40 to 20mg made me extremely irritable. Now that I am off I've realized it wasn't even helping. Seems like they work for about a year and then you are physically dependent. When is the medical community going to acknowledge this physical dependence ? Discontinuation syndrome is what they euphemistically call this dependence. We need to start calling it what it is.

These groups are not perfect, they can cause rumination, fear, wrong info “sometimes”, lack of allowing to self explore, vehemently apposed to alternatives, etc... But if you think that we don’t ruminate w/o these groups, boy are you mistaken. I’m surprised a person in you caliber doesn’t understand this! What’s the option? You think , I (a strong sufferer of benzo or sore), wasn’t looking for help with centers like yours (I definitely believe you in your approach, many times over detox centers)? Do you understand people in wd don’t have jobs (many), and cannot afford any centers or your services? Do you understand that even those on disability income cannot afford? If you would take Medicare, which many on disability have or Medicaid or real payment reductions (with low payment plan; no interest), I’d respect you much more and so would others. Your ideas are not powerful enough to penetrate psych doctors’ egos. The one missing piece of information to treat/prevent protracted withdrawals is the power of intense physical exercise plays in restoring the natural feel-good chemicals in the brain(along with a healthy, well-rounded diet). This was precisely how I had treated my own protracted withdrawals! Yes, it can be difficult to establish an intense exercise in the first 3 months, but it will get easier, I promise you. Of course, always consult a medical professional before starting an exercise program! Do you agree with this advice Dr. B? All I can truly attest to is my own experience on this subject. I'm terrified that when I'm down to 0 that I'm gonna have PAWS just cuz of how long I was on a high dose and also just how long I've been on benzos in general. Since I was 17 and now am 37. @Gerrly doing ok, down to 1.125 mgs, its pretty intense how slow one needs to go near the end, trying to cut by around 10% of my dose at a time instead of doing .25mg cuts as that's now a big % of my dose. Hopefully will be down to 1mg in the next couple weeks and be on that home stretch. I may once I get to .5mgs see if a hospital will take me or do detox, it seems like such a small amount but I guess my gaba receptors are pretty injured from being on such a high dose for years and then tapering that 22mgs pretty fast. I just wanna be done with it and start healing and get back to normality. The worst part is the anxiety .. but being on benzos is now making it worse. Unless I went back up a substantial amount which I am not gonna do. 100% determined to get to that finish line

This is so scary, especially when alot of professionals don't even no about it, it happens towards the end of a taper at a very low dose, you think your going slow but you got to be even slower and patient. This is debilitating. But im going to beat it and heal my brain. Fucking so angry at these drs. An addict can really only help other addicts. Their isint much hope. When you help others it actually helps you. If anyone can tell me anything that helped them with PAWS, ( post acute withdrawal symptoms) would be great.knowledge is key❤

Some of this is not mental but is caused by physical withdrawal from medication which is not mental addiction but physical addiction which anyone that has taken pain medication for an extended period of time will go through. This does not mean you are an addict it means your body has become addicted. I wish the doctors would address this and explain to people there is a difference between addictive personality and fiscal addiction. Thanks Doc

Dr B. I struggled with Heroin, Alcohol,Crack, K2 & benzo addiction for 25yrs and by the grace of God 3yrs ago I found Recovery. I probably tried to get Sober 25times. My Addiction got worse n worse and I fully believe addiction is progressive and fatal. The last 15 yrs of my active addiction where really bad. I was homeless, 140lbs(I'm usually 240), had shingles on my head, hep c, septic infection in my ankle and I was in the worst emotional, mental, and physical pain I could possibly be. I was going through bad psychosis towards the end of my active addiction and at some points was even confused on what my name was. I had a very spiritual experience that expelled the "obsession" of using and gave me a glimmer of hope. Alot of great things have happened for me in the past 3yrs. I have become certified in NY as a CARC(Certified Addiction Recovery Coach) and Peer Advocate. I do not work in a facility but have grown my own coaching Business through social media and word of mouth. I have found Passion and fulfillment in life where the addiction left a hole in my soul. I know from personal experience that if I can get Sober, anyone can. I rarely come across someone who has experienced as much loss, trauma and pain as I endured. 12-step(AA) Recovery is a big part of my Recovery and I am a big advocate for ppl having a program to use to get them on the right track, especially when it comes to making a spiritual connection. I believe the spiritual aspect of Recovery gets over looked a lil when it comes to treatment. To be honest, right now none of the ppl I Coach follow 12step Recovery but I do try to help them understand the spiritual principles associated w the steps and help them implement the principles into their lives if they are willing. I try my best to remain teachable and open-minded when it comes to addiction and recovery. I learn so much from you and your channel. I am so grateful to have come across you and your views and facts on addiction and recovery. My channel is geared towards those in Recovery who really want to strive for success in all aspects of life, cause putting down the drugs and alcohol is only 10% of recovery, the other 90% is changing our attitude and behaviors and for me, that came through working the 12 steps and becoming really active in Recovery. My change came through Pain. I needed to experience all the pain n misery I did to get me to the point of surrendering. My question is do you think that someone can fully recover from Addiction if they haven't really experienced any consequences or real pain(whether emotional, mental, or physical)??? Also we have a Podcast, me n my amazing girlfriend Veronica, the SoberSuccess 🎙️ Podcast,it's on RUclips, Spotify and all platforms. I would absolutely love to have you on my show for an interview in the future if that would be possible??? Thanks again Dr. B for all the videos and information, you Help me on a Daily Basis... I would have given anything to have you as a doctor. I have PTSD.
I've never been addicted to anything I was on, but I have been physically dependent. I've cold turkey quit the benzodiazepines I was taking regularly for PTSD for a couple weeks when I started feeling physically dependent, because I read about the scary withdrawals and I didn't ever want those. I now occasionally take a Xanax (usually around finals, when my panic attacks are worst) which I think is the intended use. It's irregular and as needed.
However, I wasn't educated on the physical dependency possibility of Ambien use, and by the time I had been I already was dependant. I've been on it every night for the better part of the last decade. It was 10mg, down now to 5mg (with the addition of 12.5-25mg of quetiapine) but I'd rather be on nothing to sleep, and just as needed use something for times I really needed sleep (before exams might be a time I'd use them) but with the same sort of irregular, as needed use as I use the Xanax.
I just don't know how to get there, or if I ask to taper down if a doctor would ever prescribe it to me again. Won't they think I'm a junkie after that? :/ I do have insomnia. I also have the capacity to be responsible with medication and only use it when I need it. I just wasn't given the information when I was started on Ambien that it could cause physical dependence if used regularly. If I had, I wouldn't have used sparingly from the start.

My psychiatrist told me that if I taper off successfully to let him know how I did it. I tapered from 1 mg clonazepam, cutting 6% of the last dose every 6 weeks, and it took about 2 years to taper since I couldn't stand to taper faster than that. 5 years later, so 3 years completely off of benzos, I'm still not 100% but I'd say I'm at least 90% which is fine compared to the hell I went through getting off.

Hey folks, if you are afraid of going on a taper and stopping your benzo use over time, don't be afraid. There are a lot of horror stories out here on the internet and reading that over and over again will make you feel MUCH worse during your taper. Reading all the horror is what drove me to panic attacks during my first step in the taper. I wen't from 6,5mg xanax every day down to 0,5mg (in steps) in a relative short time with very minimal withdrawals. The first step I was very afraid of all the horror stories that I had seen on the internet but after that I kinda just listened to my body and see how low I could go and how quick I could do that and now a couple of weeks later I am already at 0,5mg. I almost can not believe it but I gues I'm either lucky or there are a lot more stories like mine out there that people simply don't share. People tend to focus on bad stuff and ignore the good. Keep that in mind, your taper can go very well without much issues!
Next week I will try 0,25. If it works that is great and If I get too big withdrawal I'll just go a bit higher. I always have an "emergency dose" with me when I taper down, and just having it on me is enough, I never had to use it so far. You need to make sure you don't go too fast and get too many panic attacks or worse a seizure, but in some people the taper can go very smooth without issues.
The key for me has been to work out, I feel so much better during and after working out that sometimes I can just skip a dose because I feel so good. I do that just at home, got myself a benchpress and some weights and I can just train without going to crowded gyms etc. I also try to eat healthy, no caffeine and sugers, lots of fibers and proteines and I take CBD 20mgs in the morning and L-theanine 300mgs twice a day. I try to go to sleep and wake up at the exact same time everyday, including weekends, that has helped a lot. I have told my partner at work what I am going through with the taper, she has been very helpful. Throughout my taper so far I haven't missed a day at work. There are things at work that would be too stressful that I don't have to do for a while etc. but I am there every day. Sometimes my heart is racing and I don't feel great but it helps so much to be there, be around people and feel you are contributing. It takes your mind off of how you are feeling etc. It prevents me from going into that inward downward psychological spiral that brings the tremors and panic attacks.
It doesn't have to be hell for you to taper down. For some people it can be very easy. Your mind is a powerful thing and if you focus just on the horror stories you set yourself up for a hard time. You can trigger a panic attack by negative thinking even when you are sober, that is how powerfull your mind is, USE that power and think about positive things. Celebrate the fact that you went a step down in your taper! Believe in yourself, listen to yourself, and take care of yourself with exercise and diet. You can do this. I did not believe that I could do it when I started but I feel great now and almost off this stuff and ready to heal my brain and start a brand new drug free life.
Every bit you go down on your use you give your brain more time to heal, there will be discomfort and anxiety sometimes but that is just your brain trying to get things in order and over time all that bad feeling will just fade away. Think positive, workout, eat well, and maybe your taper will go just like mine, very smooth.
Much love for all of you going through it! You can do this!

I'm currently on a clonazepam/fluoxetine combo for 8 years and after two major crashes 2-3 months after getting to zero, I'm stuck. My doc won't acknowledge PAWS, just wants to try more meds like Lyrica or Wellbutrin. There's just no help, I'd rather be hooked on street drugs, where at least nobody would tell you to "keep taking your meds".

Opiate addict here. Stopped traditional opiates a long while ago but ended up taking tianeptine or za za if going by brand name -- for around the last year and the protracted withdrawal or PAWS is ridiculous. Dr. B, has anyone told you that even Buprenorphine won't subdue the withdrawals from Tianeptine? It will help but it will not give you nowhere near full relief. Even at 3 x 8mg tablets of Buprenorphine a day. Really weird.

@@davidkimball467 honestly the withdrawals from Buprenorphine (if you taper down to a low dose then drop off) would be much milder than tianeptine withdrawals. At least in my own experience. If you're on MAT now keep it up and taper down SLOWLY. You may still be taking a narcotic but it is the right way to get off instead of going from dose to dose of tianeptine or opiate.

Wow Dr. An amazing channel. So informative and not bullshit like half the folk on here. One thing I will say though is in the subutex (U.K.) you can request them without the naltrexone part. Just Buprenorphine Subutex. In 2012 after 18 years on methadone I made the jump slowly got to 20 mil from 50ml of methadone. Left it 36-48 hours and put a 2mg under my tongue. I thought it’s gonna make he feel better or I’ll be in a bad rattle. Luckily it was the former. Over time I’d gone up to 8mg. They go for 80 quid in jail. 4 x 2mg hits. Anyway I got hold from someone who didn’t like them so had bottles of 2mg. I heard that crushing them worked. So obviously I tried a 2mg and it was a buzz. Before long I was snorting 2-4mg every 2 hours. I was taking about 20-26mg a day.
Had to move house with my job so had to check into their drug clinic. They obviously took me off the buprenorphine and put me back on methadone. Went into detox last may and did my methadone rattle in 10 days. After 28 years on the stuff. Wasn’t easy especially catching Covid in there and I’ve end stage COPD. Awaiting a lung transplant at 48. Can be lethal those buprenorphine.
Got off the meth a year ago but it’s the groups etc that keep me on the straight and narrow. Still take the odd benzo as that’s for a different day and zopiclone at bedtime.

Not that anyone cares. Auhority figures are given a green light to engage in any and all manner of criminal conduct conceivable,
while the patient population and society at large think only of punishing the poor. So there are no functioning adults,
and that's why everybody loves and craves censorship as this is the best way of inciting the entire herd into scorched

I’m definitely hypersensitive to all psychotropics now that I’m this hurt.
I was a 3X pain patient by 21 yrs old over antibiotics PANS + serotonin syndrome from Prozac. All the “nerve pain” psychotropics made it so much worse. Opiates, stimulants, gabapentiniods, tricyclic antidepressants, even hormones..
Chronic akathisia is hell on earth. It’s not protracted withdrawal. It’s brain damage. Let’s call it what it is? These medications cause brain damage at prescribed dosages. I’ve supported a friend with assisted death over her benzo injury. She suffered 5 1/2 years. I have friends suffering horribly a decade off meds. How these drugs are legal w/o giving people compensation is beyond me. No one told me this could happen.
