BBS Style 5(RC090) Rebuild, Start To Finish - A Short Film By Chromatic

- This was a lot of fun. Like a super large amount of fun. Rebuilding these BBS Style 5 wheels wasn’t something that was entirely necessary because as you’ll see, they weren’t in terrible condition by any means. However I wanted to create something special and unique for my car. This process was spread over a number of days and countless hours trying to get them as nice as I could with my little knowledge of doing this. I am super happy with how they turned out and I hope you guys will enjoy watching the process.
First off the wheel faces were split from the barrel so that they could be powder coated and the bases could be properly stripped and cleaned. I didn’t love the idea of not being able to powder coat the OEM Style 5 centre cap due to it being plastic. So I opted for the EWheelWorks Waffle Conversion so that they could be colour matched and I could run hex caps. The faces and waffles were sent out to be powder coated in an OEM BMW Silver. Next up I cleaned the barrels, the goal wasn’t perfection, I basically just wanted a flush service to remount the face to. After that I applied aircraft remover to the lips in order to strip the clear coat. Style 5’s come with a factory clear coat on the lips, which really restricts your ability to polish them to a desired finish. Once the clear coat was gone I sanded them with 600, 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000 grit sandpaper. Followed by a polish. At this point the faces had come back from powder coating and I was able to rebuild the wheels. New gold hardware, a little blue thread locker and some BBS valve stems finished the look.

I once took on this task of removing paint and hand polishing aluminum wheel lips, I did it in the end, but it took way too much time and effort, sanding until I couldn't feel my hands anymore, so watching this gave me mild case of PTSD

Halfway through with mine and I’m in the same boat trying to find vids to hopefully speed up the process but this project is all about patience and Manuel labor
I'm currently restoring my style 5's, Its been 4 months since I started working on them, and I only have one left to do. I have to tell that its really hard to work on them in my apartment. its been a journey but I'm proud of how the wheels came up to be my first time restoring wheels.

This video single-handidly turned me from looking at BBS and shiny wheels and go mehhh to wanting to buy a set, restore it and put it on my (still) non-existing car. Such a badass video man 🙌🏼 exactly why you’re my favorite automotive/detailing youtuber. It’s obvious how much you love the process, and know your shit 😎🤌🏼 Somethin so therapeutic and blissful when it comes to rebuilding/refinishing a set of beautiful splits. My first ever pair of true splits was a set of Image BBM (uk wheel manufacturer for those who don’t know) that I had ordered and waited on like a kid on Christmas. I refinished those wheels twice, and ended up trading for a set of Diamond cut face Tracer Tech2’s with polished lips that I also rebuilt twice. When rebuilding/resizing/refinishing those, it was the only time I didn’t mind my cars downtime because the process was too enjoyable 😂 that #wheelwhore life is a blessing and a curse.
In the middle of rebuilding a set of 18” BBS RF and stepping up with some custom lips and barrels to 20” for the Tiguan R. I’m so ready to see them on the car man 🤤 been building and waiting on parts for them on and off for the past few months. I had to go with some legit BBS stamped hardware, and design line caps because I’m too extra.

Thanks Charan! So I believe someone took a can of spray paint and sprayed the whole back of the wheel at spelling as the bolts and nuts were also silver. However no complaints haha. Kept everything in great shape apparently
