      @@Tomn8er if he had the size he wouldn't have the aesthetics and proportions (well, highly unlikely that is) and a very small and tight midsection which is his bread and butter. He was so good BECAUSE he wasn't huge. It's the same argument as "if only Lee Priest was taller" well if he was taller then his trademark fullness and 3D wouldn't be as present, his impressive arms worked because they were so short, him being taller means his limbs would be longer and his physique would drastically look different. I also think Ray would look a bit stocky and unaesthetic with more size as we've seen in 1998 when he tried to play the mass game and came in at 218 pounds (his heaviest) and thus placed poorly.

      Couple of years later I was on a river cruise with my friends, bought Flex magazine in a local Irish country shop (still have no idea what the hell it was doing there, totally crazy that it was. The look of horror I was given by the old lad behind the counter when I put it down to pay still makes me laugh 24 years later!!) and was not one bit surprised that Ronnie had won when everyone else was on team flex or team levrone. Nowadays any gym junkie with some average genetics and a heavy load of anabolics can win a cheap show and get a pro card which is why we have such a mediocre lineup nowadays at the Olympia compared to the 80s 90s. Anyone in the top 10 of the 90s would smoke today's lineup. Period.

      @@f22guion2 his triceps were fine size wise, what are you talking about? There wasn't any noticeable difference between his left and right triceps, the only argument one could really make is that Dorian started using insulin heavily which blew his midsection out right around that time (1996-1997) and basically made his arms look even smaller in comparison when actually if you would measure them they wouldn't be any smaller if not even bigger than just months/a year before.

    Good vid, thanks. Dorian, apart from the obvious tear which is a major factor had one other bicep weakness. He didn't use SEOs. Nasser and flex defo did. If you look at the end of the video the difference between Dorian grain and flexs softness in the bicep shows. I'm not sure about Sean tbh, I dont think he did. He was calling for flexs calves to be checked for implants around this time, but it was seos again.
    Tbh, the only guy in the top 4 that I'm 100% certain didn't use seos was Yates. This is why every area of his physique looked so grainy.
    I feel very privileged to have seen him up close in person and I can say with absolute certainty no seos were ever put into any muscle group in his body. The striations, feathering and density in just his delts was absolutely outer worldly, video pictures, even photos at the time didn't do it justice.
    He had his flaws, especially towards the end due to injuries, but every bit of muscle on his frame was built through hard training. No fake enhancement, at all, anywhere. Nasser, on the other hand looked weird in the biceps and the rear and side delts up close.
    Shaun looked pretty spectacular also, and he would be considered as one of the absolute all time greats if Flex didn't go mad with the crude.
    Anyhoo, just my opinion. More than happy to be called on anything you guys disagree with.
    Namaste 👍

    Hate to agree as I still think Dorian won more than he should have, but clearly, 1996 was not one of them. Shawn looked exceptional, but Yates was just too good. Unless - as you said - you go to different directions and start to reward completeness, aesthetics, shape or symmetry. Which are pretty damn important, tbh. But as far as mass and conditioning can get you: Dorian was unbeatable at that time.
    That being said, this video might've secretly shed some light on the Dorian vs Ronnie matter...At around 3:15 in the back relaxed Ronnie looks as wide or even wider, as meaty or even meatier as Dorian. Surely he lacks the conditioning...I might even say that Dorian was altogheter better in that department than any version of Ronnie...or anyone :) But if you assume that Ronnie had only improved after this up until 98-99, then you'll have a guy with a wider, thicker back with almost the same back conditioning and much, much better glutes and even hams. So this might be one of the important footages regarding the "who would win a rear lat spread?" between the two. Nice! :)

    • @Tomn8er
      @Tomn8er  4 года назад +9

      Yup Ronnie's back at his peak was undoubtedly bigger, thicker, and even wider than Dorian's, it makes me laugh when people say otherwise. He's barely in his infancy here, can you imagine the size difference between Yates and a 2003 RC?? Still, Dorian's was probably harder and drier than any version of Big Ron.

    • @Tomn8er
      @Tomn8er  4 года назад +6

      Ronnie's back by 04 had already begun to atrophy and that's far from a flattering pic. Even by 03 his width was starting to suffer a little. 99-2000 showcases his true width:
      www.ambal.ru/02168027016.jpg
      www.ambal.ru/02015853916.jpg
      And his back definitely was thicker in certain areas, upper traps for one. Dorian had the better lower traps but I'd basically tie them on the lats themselves. Dorian typically wins lower back but not against prime Ronnie who had a friggin xmas tree in the RR and RLS which I don't think you could ever say for Yates.
      I'll grant you the point about calves, but look at that 99 pic and find ONE photo of Yates in the RLS that looks better because I've yet to see it. Let alone BDB which is no contest.

    So odd that 24 years later, this sport of Bodybuilding has regressed and declined so significantly. The 2019 lineup and "top 2" was an absolute travesty when you compare it to this 1996 top 2. Wow... it's sad that while most other sports are on an upswing, that *this* sport is showing athletes actually getting worse. Maybe the "advanced" drugs like Insulin and HGH are actually making these guys worse, and they're experiencing a point of diminishing returns, or because of the drugs, just not building a great "foundation" like Yates and Ray did with hardcore, blood, sweat and tears type training.

    • @Tomn8er
      @Tomn8er  4 года назад +1

      TBF Ray was using stuff probably as early as 19 years old. He didn't even build a foundation. Dorian was taking stuff as early as his first non-pro comp as well. True, the amount of gear they were taking was minuscule in comparison, but still. I suspect it's the _quality_ of the drugs that has declined over the decades. Remember Rich Piana talking about IGF1 and how it used to be so potent but now it's not even close?

      @@Tomn8er well Arnold was on gear as well as early as 16 years old 😂. That's why his 23 year old son, Joseph, who is natty at the moment, still does not compare to his dad at a younger age, yet they have very similar structure and genetics. When I talk about "foundation", I'm referring to how Arnold, Dorian, and Ronnie, for example, trained hard and heavy, and their physiques just seem more granite like and solid.....

      To look like Ronnie he also needed bigger quads, but it was not really that much neccessary for him to win in his era. If Dorian had better chest or arms that would make him look better of course but his chest and everything he had was enough to be good enough to.beat everybody even Ronnie coleman. His chest was not as big as of Ronnie but it was perfect for Dorian in poses where he usually dominated (fls), his triceps were not the best but it was perfect for him in poses like side tri or fls (great triceps sweep). • @marijancorluka4500
      @marijancorluka4500 4 года назад

      @TheLusianPopa It is true that Ronnie's back was inferior to both Dorian and Phil, conditioning wise (the top 3 backs in my opinion), but Ronnie had those freak slobs of muscle on his back that would look ridiculous in the BLS. Lower body was not too big back in 1999 though, he destroys Dorian in the hams and glutes, conditioning and size wise. Calves yeah, Ronnie doesn't stand a chance. In conclusion - Dorian had a better and more conditioned back, but Ronnie had a much better lower body (with an exception of calves) plus a still very amazing and freaky back. I don't think we can be much objective here but I feel like judges would have leaned more towards Ronnie's combo, what do you think about that, as far as judges go? I know width plays a huge role in the lat spreads and Dorian was a master there, that's why I'm not 100 sure when it comes to BLS.
