I generally don't like these remasterings as Caruso's voice is often distorted, but this one is OK I think and more palatable for most listeners.

Santa Lucia is a traditional Neapolitan song. It was transcribed by Teodoro Cottrau (1827-1879) and published by the Cottrau firm, as a "barcarolla", at Naples in 1849. Cottrau translated it from Napuletano into Italian during the first stage of the Risorgimento, the first Neapolitan song to be given Italian lyrics. Its transcriber, who is very often credited as its composer, was the son of the French-born Italian composer and collector of songs Guillaume Louis Cottrau (1797-1847).
The Neapolitan lyrics of "Santa Lucia" celebrate the picturesque waterfront district, Borgo Santa Lucia, in the Bay of Naples, in the invitation of a boatman to take a turn in his boat, the better to enjoy the cool of the evening.

Whilst at grammar school in the 1960s aged 14, my music teacher asked the class to bring in a record from home. I was the only one who brought in opera... Caruso with "la donna e mobile" on 78rpm. I later discovered that my great grandfather was also involved in the opera.
I have always been attracted to sad and trajic music. Still am.
Your story brought back the same memory from 1959 took a 78 of Caruso to my music class, my beloved dad was a Irish tenor and loved Caruso and Mario Lanza. On this mother's day 2024 I'm watching the Great Caruso starring Mario, thanks for reminding me of 1959 a great year and great time to be a teenager.

Lanza ammirava Caruso e lo imitava nel canto da giovane ma poi secondo me, lui lo ha di gran lunga superato! Le interpretazioni di Mario delle canzoni napoletane sono fantastiche per lui, nato a Filadelfia e sempre vissuto in America. Tecnica, voce e sentimento, queste le componenti della magia di Lanza.

Sono cresciuto ascoltando i dischi in vinile che mio padre ascoltava molto spesso essendo un grande appassionato di lirica .con Caruso il bel canto è pieno di grandi voci sia tenori che baritono bassi e soprani.che hanno portato il bel canto per il mondo.Ma ripeto per me Caruso resta il più grande sarà perchè oltre alla voce ci mette il cuore le note le accarezza e le esprime questo mi fa emozionare e rilascia la mente!
