I've read of the Mathematical, the Oriental and the Mailcoach. I've also read that a True Gentleman ties his own neck clothes, and doesn't let his valet do more than stand by holding a pile of starched ones. (Apparently a whole pile is needed for the process isn't always successful the first time, or perhaps not the 2nd or 3rd either, and trying to get it right wrinkles them right up.)
Of course the manservant could tie the cravat and keep his silence so that none would be the wiser.

The biggest difficulty I find with my Victorian cravat or Regency neck cloth is keeping the fabric flat and like a wall around my neck especially in the front and especially after wearing it over and over. I guess steam cleaning would do nicely with this problem...

A bit of steam and/or a bit of starch is the traditional way to keep it nice and crisp. Don't over do the starch though, or it'll get scratchy and uncomfortable and you'll have to suffer for your fashion.

@@penny7b : Thank you Penny, believe it or not, I just washed mt Regency neck cloth and it now looks great! It is wider and flat and all I did was wash it with soap and cold water! I will now repeat this process after every second use to accomplish this look. Wow!

thank you for this--I had no idea the neck cloths back in the day were so long! I've read the names of several styles of Regency cravats and wonder how they're tied. "Mathematical" is one of them. Do you know them?
