It is amazing how little formal fashion has changed for men. It's pretty similar with many changes of course but not that radical as women's has been.
and even now, at very formal occasions, men will wear tails like a weddings and orchestra players so yeah, men's fashions haven't changed...
My thoughts exactly. Except that cravat is the French word for a tie and I still often wear them. So they were not quite ditched after all.
Formal men’s fashion* because as a whole, it changed a LOT
@@Udontkno7 Not that much, certainly not as much as women's has.
I believe that the Beau Brummells, dandy and close friend to Victoria’s uncle King George IV, began the three piece suit that evolved into the suit we know today. He created a style with a shirt, a jacket, pants, and some sort of neck scarf that evolved into the modern men’s tie. Before that, men’s clothing was different with breeches and waistcoats underneath overcoats.
I think some servants -- such a valets and ladies' maids -- had to be people the masters and mistresses trusted implicitly. Because their job was so intimate, they were usually regarded as friends as well as servants. Quite a fine line to walk, I'd say.
Karen K just imagine saying something out of turn or touching then accidentally in an improper manner, even if you didn’t mean it. omg i could never do that job, no matter how nice the master or mistress was
@@jacobjacquin Yeah, I think it would be tough. You're kind of a therapist too, because they're telling you all about their problems and you're expected to be absolutely discreet. I'd be afraid of being blamed if something went missing.
Karen K definitely, imagine damaging a fabric and trying to explain to them what really happened.
@@kck9742 The standard response when anything went missing was to go into the servants' living areas and go through all their personal possessions. That was if you had someone fair. You could get fired just for the suspicion that you stole something.
If you want to talk about intimate servants, look up "Groom of the Stool".
Not gonna lie, the actor of Albert is pretty hot 😂...
Lol I was going to say the same thing.. he was really sexy
Yup, now we know why Victoria couldn't keep her hands off him and how they ended up with nine kids...
@@MJ-cc4uf No way! You mean this isn't actual footage from 1848? 🙄
@@KellyfromMemphis Victoria apparently thought so!
I like his moustache!!! Very hot
This era marked the last gasp for color and extravagance in men's fashions for some time. Within another 20 years, the brighter, contrasting waistcoats would be subsumed in blacks, whites and other neutrals. And it would all get lost in dark frock coats and (later) sack suits that eventually eliminated a lot of individual expression. At least they still had top hats for a while!
I think that is why it is not uncommon for grooms of today to choose a morning dress, if the wedding starts in the afternoon (as it usually does), although it is otherwise pretty much a forgotten dreas. It allows for a colourful waistcoat and plastron.
The funny thing is men could probably still choose to dress like Albert, when the party calls for tails. I think it would still be appropriate, as it was used in similar situations then. That would just require having a tailor do it specifically, as they aren't available off the rack.
@@MiljaHahto Could choose? Most of it is still the default evening wear on formal occasions where a simply suit doesn't cut it. There are some minor differences, such as bowtie instead of cravate and the tailcoats are cut slightly different, but otherwise it's the same. At some occasions headgear is also a must!
@@Ruhrpottpatriot Indeed there are differencies between the tailcoat of today and of the 19th century. Today they are all black-and-white, so Alberts version would definitely stand out from the crowd. To have the older version would be a consious choice as they are not readily available.
The 20s picks this up again which was excitibg
I'm obsessed with these videos....I can totally see why Prince Albert and Queen Victoria were pop culture icons of their day. They were young, incredibly good looking and interesting as individuals. I'm a Puerto Rican millennial from Brooklyn and I can't get enough of them so go figure! lol
Tiffany I I’m a Jewish millennial from Washington Heights who is also completely obsessed with these. Maybe we’re their target demographic. Haha
Albert was never popular in the UK during his lifetime. He was seen as an interloping foreigner.
@@laurenconrad1799 LOL possibly!
@@daniel_sc1024 poor guy he wasn't so bad. He at least tried.
@@daniel_sc1024
Yeah Victoria wanted him to be king but the brits didn't like it because he was a foreigner so instead he was prince consort
He in my opinion was the biggest gentleman if I ever saw one
I understand why Queen Victoria was so sad over her husband’s death. Such an intelligent gentleman, a loving husband and a good father too.
Esme Tsai their romance was one for the ages. I don’t think you often see marriages as strong as theirs between many royals throughout history.
It is somewhat ironic that Queen Victoria, who enjoyed the rare benefit of marrying for love, insisted on tight control over who here children married.
And excellent first cousin as well
@@clod8 nice ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@@wufongtanwufong5579 Except she wasn't shagging. When someone becomes lonely, they seek out company to fill the void. Considering she permanently wore black, thinking she forgot about him and moved on is simply untrue.
Delightful to see some men fashion videos, this look is absolutely stunning !!
I enjoyed this too. I think we don't see so many men's fashions videos because, frankly, men's fashions have changed so little since the early 1800s.
Yes, I love to see them. I have a thing for waistcoats lol
Oh My, the actor is quite handsome!
Queen Victoria remarked on Albert as a young man that, "he was beautiful to look at"
Unlike the real Prince
@@1brickrow ???? He was gorgeous when he was young...
I love the shape of these clothes, truly amazing how it emphasizes the figure
@adrianna This is not how I want to dress just to drink coffee and read a book at Starbucks on a cold day. Sorry. Prince Albert had servants to prep his daily wear:; we commoners dont have such luxury.
@@brumels1570 even thought a tailcoat is bit much except when you on the evening,a stylish coat and sweater was nice!
Yeah, that silhouette is just gorgeous.
prince Albert wore 1848 skinny jeans.
Not a fan of painted on jeans here, for the same reason I don't stay in cheap hotels. No ballroom.
Practically leggings, actually. The pants were so tight that allegedly his large manhood needed to be chained in place for decency’s sake.

Caligula Longhbottom ‘allegedly’. It’s possible it’s just an urban myth
@@caligulalonghbottom2629 🤩😄
Sigh! Wish we dressed like that today...soooo elegant!
Well, you need only do it. Who cares what others think? Restart the trend, yourself.
i ain't got the time...
I wonder how confortable it was though...
@@intotheburrowASMR quite a few men today have bought their dark suit in polyester blend, which is breaths less than the natural fibers. Wool, silk, cotton and linen are easier to wear (that waistcoat was probably silk brocade, perhaps lined with linen).
I think you could still choose a similar dress when the etiquette calls for tails - if you can afford to have it tailormade, as it isn't available off the rack. Or at least the coat isn't, you might find the waistcoat and suitable pants. That shirt looks more comfortable than most todays shirts.
You should do some about how kids dressed in 1400s-1900s
Like if you agree
Until the Victorian era, there was really no difference between children's clothes and adults' clothes -- just smaller. The whole concept of "childhood" as we understand it today is quite recent.
What the previous commenter said is correct. There’s also the issue of child exploitation. You can show an adult in various stages of undress (even if they’re quite covered by modern standards) but you can’t do that with children. There is a dressing sequence in the 90’s version of The Secret Garden featuring Maggie Smith and something like that would just never be green lit today.
Basically mini versions of adult clothes with aprons to protect them
@@kck9742 That is not necessarily true. There is plenty to talk about on victorian kids fashion. For instance, how boys had to wear short shorts all year round until they turned 11-12, or how both younger boys and girls wore the exact same dresses instead of pants, or traditional kids headwear, what babies wore to bed, girls and corsets, etc.
@@kamillatoth3433 Please reread my comment: "UNTIL the Victorian era..."

It would be cool if you could do a video inspired by one of Henry the 8ths six wives
Emma Carter Yes!!
@@paigemclachlan2189 have you heard of the musical Six? It is about Henry the 8ths wives.
Emma Carter it sounds familiar but I’ll have to check it out! Thanks for the recommendation! ☺️
"This dress fits nicely, but the neck pinches a little bit... Henry?"
Yes please!!!
Glad to see some men's fashions. Easy to dress like that when you look like him. Me not so much. Good show!
I’d love to see something on the transitional periods of fashion like the 1820s or the 1870s, that’d be cool.
Oh, that actor playing Albert..is wonderful😍😅
I wish men still dressed like this. So beautiful and stunning on any man!
I meaaaaannn... Prince Albert could get it, am I right?
To the extent that getting it from one's own cousin is desirable.
The actors doing these productions are great. It's interesting to contrast this performance, to the one about dressing the 18th century gentleman. The actor played that man as a arrogant fop (and he did a great job! Without a single spoken line, just body language). This actor here conveyed a very different man, one who was more personable and kind, as Prince Albert was known to be.
Nice to see someone with a level of education to know the 18th Century is 1700-1799, sick of people messing it all up!
I understand why Queen Victoria never stopped mourning this man.
Isn't it obvious?
More men's fashion, please! Love your videos as always
this actor looks like he s the CUTEST man
I love this look and yes, if I had this I’d wear it everywhere......even Walmart

Zach Pinsent has an excellent short on this subject
He has a wedding ring! Nice detail
All these comments are making me blush! Hopefully you don’t get in trouble from Victoria! She can get... quite jealous!
I certainly am.
i thought this would be a lot more complicated lol. but great video!
They left the complications to the woman of the time. 😁
I think men’s clothing tended to be more complicated in the century before this. But then a man named Beau Brummell popularized a simpler style that would evolve into the three piece suit we know today with just a shirt, pants, jacket, and neck scarf or modern neck tie.
He is outstandingly handsome.Well potrayed the prince who was handsome as well.
I really like watching these, one I want to see is a early 1900 Butler. We have seen a maid already so it would be cool to see a Butler as well
1:19 his smile tho😳
I often wonder where we would be had he lived a full life. He was so far ahead of his time
❤😍📷🌟❤ Please do with Queen Victoria ❤❤
Josh you look very smart dressed as Prince Albert xx
Herr Löhlein? I remember him from Season 1 of the Victoria series. Such a shame we don’t see much of him.
Now I know his first name. Thank you.
Sadly, It seems to me that the trousers aren't accurately high waisted enough. I like the video, though!

Here I thought they actually brought in the actor from the TV show!
He looks so good.
Apparently Prince Albert was extremely well endowed. Image being the servant who got to dress him and see that so often.

I... did not need to know this.
This comment is ethically questionable but alright
damn it Albert looks fiiinneeee
Thank you again for another informative video. His dress looks very nice.
It’s ok but I still prefer Regency dress for men like c1995 Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. Now that’s proper knee trembler fashion. Any chance of doing that? With the same actor of course whose very handsome (and probably better without the whiskers)....BRING BACK WAISTCOATS say I 🥰

Awesome to see something for the gents! Thanks.
Tailcoats were so elegant. Modern suit jackets are really meh in comparison, and nowadays you really only see tailcoats on conductors or male opera singers in concert. Even then some conductors wear those weird standing-collar casual suits instead.
There are some formal parties that do call for tails. Here it is also common for grooms to choose tailcoat, although some prefer morning suit.
But I think the tailcoat dress of 19th century was better than todays. Today it is only black and white.
Splendid video.

No Victorian gentlemen would leave home without his personalized & ornate
snuff box! Also a fountain pen and a gold signet ring bearing his crest upon it.
Optionals: Quizzing glasses (for scrutinizing society) and a silk top hat! 🎩
Men had so many layers and accoutrements for his wardrobe back in the day.
Now it's simple suits and old slob clothes! LOL!
wow he was cute haha
Be careful, some dumbf*** will think you don't know that this isn't actually Prince Albert. Every time I comment on the looks of an historical re-enactor there's always at least one: "You know this isn't really [historical person], right?"
Of course i know that isn't him lol hahaha

I just discovered your videos and I love them. I wish you'd do one on styles from the 1950's.
I desperately want to see one for women’s late 1890s dress! Or a shorter one for the 1950s!

This is random but your comment is so pure and just made me happy for some reason idk
Damn this man looks so good
Thank You very much, Great Information
"Prince Albert" can get it.
Here's what I wanna know, did they wear all that in the summer months when it was 90 degrees?
No, there was summer outfits for ladies and gentlemen too, including clothes for hunting, shooting, fishing, golfing, cricket etc
Also, it was rare for summer temps to reach 90 degrees in Britain, especially since Queen Victoria and Prince Albert holidayed in Scotland were it was much cooler or on the Isle of Wight which had a cooler environment due to it being an island, surrounded by the sea.
The "white tie and tails" dress-code has barely changed in over 150 years. Still the most elegant outfit and the top of formality in the Western world. In the video, the ivory waistcoat is beautiful and the tailcoat fits well, but the trousers have a very short rise, which is historically incorrect, and doesn't go well with the waistcoat, as you can actually see the shirt exposed between the waistband of the trousers and the bottom of the waistcoat, which is something that should never ever happen!
Why are British guys so low key cute?
Like almost every dude I’ve seen or met who was a Brit was super fine af lol
That guy is so handsome
Greetings from Coburg!
I wish they still had valets to dress us and take care of our clothes!
Side lock so cool
And to think that nowadays men go out in public with less than what the Victorians wore for underwear. What a step down for civilization.
Gorgeous.
A Prince tying his shoes himself? touching the shoes !? are you joking?🤔😄😄
going to the bathroom must have been a nightmare back then
Such a beautiful moustache......
Prince Albert was well known for not wearing any underclothes beneath his trousers. It was very revealing. This is a little inaccurate because of this.
Another reason people needed help back then is clothes were such thickness due to lack of refined cotton and wool manufacture that they were like suits of armor . a poor man had his wife to help him dress and he performed the same service for his wife or she pressed one of her daughters into service.
a lovely gentleman indeed

You think Albert wore a victorian men’s corset?
If I was a man this is how I would dress when wearing a suit info find men's clothes to be quite dull. I also like the waistcoat, the pearl buttons on the shirt and the cravat is a nice touch.
No mention of his Prince Albert...
I'm rather enjoying this series you have :D
