Those breeches need to make a comeback.
The whole style in general. The cloak is a piece of clothing that never should've gone away. It's so versatile.
YESSS
Lucas is so cute and suave at the same time -- a very charming narrator and a perfect Victorian gent!
You could do this more often..your hubby is a very good presenter and model too..👍😊
Thank you!
“None of that schoolboy knot nonsense a proper Windsor knot” classic Lucas 😂
Very stylish! So elegant! Truly a Gentleman with his Lady
I wear modern clothes, but once I discovered how comfortable suspenders (braces) are, I never wore a belt again.
Good job Lucas. You gave a good explanation for each piece. I have never seen you do a solo film. Isabel, we need more of Lucas`s solo films. I`ve only see him dancing and helping you. We could use that outfit here in Michigan, USA.
There have been some dressing a gent videos before, but I don't remember if he's done the explaining before.
The whole idea of people going out in smart dress needs to return. This is beautiful.
It's lovely to hear Lucas, too.
That seems practical and comfy. Capes are not just stylish, but also very good for adding one more layer without making you feel like a Michelin man...
True. I especially like them for situations like being on public transport. You can just push a cape to the back, without taking it off, if you get warm. A coat, you have to take off completely, which can be awkward if it's crowded and you're carrying bags and stuff and don't really have free hands.
The only thing they're not good for is if you carry a rucksack on the regular, which I do, to keep my hands free when shopping and bicycling. Otherwise I'd wear capes galore!
@@aprillen Depends - sometimes you can wear the cape over the backpack. I've done that with a raincape when hiking. Less sweaty than a raincoat.
@@aprillen
Yes, that's true, unfortunately. I've had that issue, as well.
Although I guess, one could construct a cape with slits for the straps to go through at mid back. They would have to be detachable then, of course. Like purse straps. And putting the rucksack on would be a little awkward. Would be a fun look, though!
@MiljaHahto I would do that with a raincape as well, and I've probably done with my very prosaic mediaeval cloak, but not with a stylish cape like this.
Bernadette Banner just posted a video about a gorgeous witchy cape that she made, which gave me serious cape envy, but that one would work even less well with a rucksack...
so much of what is being worn wouldn’t look out of place today men’s fashion definitely hasn’t changed as much as ladies❤
Ah, hats and capes! So stylish! I adore that look.
The double Windsor is the first knot I learned from my dad! 🥰🥰🥰
Love this style. Neat to see this sort of video with men's clothing!
Lucas always looks very much the gentleman, whatever he wears!
I'v always known that I'm wearing in old-fashioned outdated style... Triple-thread linen shirt with cufflinks... Haven't even imagined that's THAT old.
Thank you very much!
i kinda want that jacket now
lucas looks DELIGHTED to model your work
Thanks for explaining the cap pocket! I have a few jackets with them but didn't know they had a specific purpose/history.
I love that you show men's fashions as well as women's. Love it when Lucas makes an appearance too. It's interesting that men's fashions haven't moved as far from years past as women's have.
definitely agree with you about the homburg. Love the flatcap but the homburg is just something special
I like this so much ☺️ looks so elegant and well made. We need more men in vintage/historical clothing 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I have a lovely cape made out of llama fibre. It keeps me very warm for cold Canadian winters. Very functional piece. 😄
Such a smart look while also looking very comfortable. I was surprised by how modern the shirt was - it could be worn today without anyone giving it a second glance.
Such a dapper gent!
Honestly, I'd love to wear that. Especially the cape. 😍
Just as a true "Gentleman" should look! - loved the video!
Love seeing men's clothes. This outfit, especially, is brilliant. Always love a cape!
Lovely. A good shot for the other side that we don’t often get to see. 😊
I actually would still wear a red union suit up until last winter where I got sick of pooping out of the butt slit, so I upgraded to regular two piece long John’s with the tall socks, of course boots as well. Instead of breeches I use a woolen set of trousers with braces or a woolen overall set. If you break it down, men’s clothes really haven’t changed as much as women’s
The shirt was modern ... it had a brand label on the chest pocket.
The shoes were modern too, unless they had speed lace hooks back in the 1890s. [I could be wrong.]
I'm sure the exact cuts did exist back then ... Izabela and Lucas would not make that mistake.
A wonderful outfit!
@@HildaCorners I'm sure they are modern reproductions of old patterns
I absolutely adore the outfit. I wish men still dressed like this! The boots are fantastic
Wonderful! Thanks for showing this. He's a nice looking man too.
Oh my god, such an elegant and disdinguished Gentleman!
I enjoy your channel quite a bit! One topic I’d love to see more info on is sleepwear.
Charming! What lovely fabrics.
I need a cape lile this in my wardrobe.
Such a handsome couple. I love the chemistry between you both. I'm taking courses at university in social studies and part of that is the history of fashion. You were suggested as a series to watch and comment on along with several other sites. The first course was last year and I was hooked along with quite a few of my fellow students. Such an amazing talent, an artist really and to share such a passion with your husband is absolutely wonderful. Cheers from the USA and the state of New Mexico. ❤️ 😊
It's rare to see subtitles with audio descriptions. Very kind of you, sir
This is great! Love the cape. Glad you made one for men. Thanks!
Lucas looks as dashing as ever.
As a skirt person I never thought I’d say this, but… I NEED a pair of breeches. And who knew tasseled garters were so sexy? 😊
The lack of capes in our current society is a tragedy.
I wear a cape every day and it's amazing, honestly just go for it.
@@ellaisplotting
I have a full wool cape and love it!
The cape is beautiful. Your fabrics make me so envious.
t6hat was awesome! He looks fabulous!!
I never knew that Victorian capes buttoned all the way up the front so they're like a poncho!
Great job, seems like any guy would love that outfit, and you wear it very well!
Lovely. You are a GREAT Couple❤❤
What a lovely cape, and a fantastic model!
A well-dressed gent is always a pleasure to see and Richard looks like a York landowner walking his land in the early winter, maybe planning on a Christmas shooting party.
Who is Richard?
@@priorattire Opps, I meant Lucas but I was trying to write a letter and in the letter I referred to my uncle. Hope I didn't put Lucas in letter
God, if I didn't live in Florida I'd kill for a cape like that!
That looks absolutely amazing !! Could be worn even today without any problems. Great video as always Izabella !!
My favorite piece is the jacket. I want the lady version.
You guys are an awesome team 😍
Wonderful demonstration ty 👍🧡
I love watching both you and your husband's videos but I would love to see more couples videos. You two are an adorable couple
Such a great look for a gentleman.... so much better than modern synthetic fabrics ( yes i know they are better and more appropriate in a technical sense )
Definitely not better….
Удивительно, рубашка практически современная!
Ребята, вы творите замечательные, красивые и интересные вещи.
Very comfortable I'm sure! Congratulations to you both!
A super video. I like your presentation style and all the detailed information on the clothing of the period. It looked like you were [both] enjoying yourselves, too. Looking splendid, sir. I'm a Norfolk man, who would be very comfortable in this clothing. Thank you for sharing.
I love seeing men's outfits from different era's. I am also amazed by his balancing skills lol. I would have gone down head first a few times. Great outfit, looked very warm.
I love the cape! I wonder if you have some resource of sewing patterns for such capes, I would love to make one for myself
I draft the patterns myself- the pattern for this one will be in my book, Dandy through the ages
This is so helpful. I’m getting ready for Dickins Christmas festival here in Galveston, Tx . It is always such fun especially since Oliver Dickins, the great great great great grandson of Charles Dickins attends. Great video.
Had ear muffs come into use by then? So nice seeing a couple having equal interest in something. Especially these gorgeous clothes!
I believe so.
Love the detail on the buttons. I would have used one of the larger sticks from the ground outdoors in place of a cane; gives the outfit a more rustic feeling.
Well done, Lucas!
Looks like a wonderful Sherlock Holmes mystery come to life
The shirt looks so modern! 😲And capes are so cool! 😁
Thy didn’t really change that much in the last century, especially if you buy from a transitionally established provider- here they tend to be in business for well over 100 years, so you stick to what works
You look absolutely splendid! Is there a pattern for the britches anywhere? I'd love to make some of my own!
I have included a pattern for late Victorian breeches in the Equestrian Dressmaker book
This video is lovely but why mention the buckle and then not do it up and leave the belt dangling? Lucas looks very dapper, nonetheless.
I was wondering about that, too.
Handsome stylit was an wonderful sense of fun . That sense of elegance is seemingly gone these days.
The only thing missing is the walking stick... 😄
The country gentleman look hasnt changed much in the past 150 or so years.
I’m rather curious about the longjohns, what fabric were they made out of? How does one best get something similar today? I’ve heard stories of people wearing them in some sort of knitted fabric, and the descriptions are so vague that I can’t figure out if it’s a jersey-like fabric or literally knitted with wool and knitting needles.
If you don’t mind me asking, where could I find more information about what labourers and lower class people wore in this era? In my daily life, I work in a shop selling various craft supplies, so what would that kind of man be wearing? I’ve looked into my family history for facts and inspiration and I know I’ve got sheep farmers and generally quite a lot of the common folk in my ancestry.
Speaking of hats, I have to say that while I’ve tried a Homburg, it did not suit me well, and I’ll remain a baker’s boy cap kind of man until something significant changes.
Most were tightly knitted jersey- also used for ladies winter wear . Though no doubt home knitted versions would also be an option I suppose
They still make long johns / union suits / combinations, though they're not easy to find. Here are a couple of USA sources, there are probably more.
LL Bean used to sell them, in Duofold fabric (mostly wool with a cotton lining). They don't have them now, I don't know if they stopped carrying them completely or they only have them in fall / winter (it's late May as I write).
Vermont Country store has bright red cotton ones in stock. Surprisingly, they're only $25.
I have never worn either, so I can't tell you about quality or fit. I have a couple of very old Duofold tops, when the outer layer was 100% wool, they're still in good condition.
Did you know that red dye has a thicker feel hence red being popular for warm underwear.
Red has been used for undergarments for many centuries, for a variety of different reasons, most of them without any scientific proof . In some centuries people claimed it warded off diseases, In some that it looked warmer therefore it was, in some that I was sexier than white.
Yes women did wear red petticoats until recently@@uhmwhat158
Very handsome love the outfit! What class of gentleman would wear an outfit like this?
Middle and upper classes
I love it. More man's Outfits thanks
Love the cape
imo the cape would benefit from hand slits, as i've seen on 1960's ivy cycling cape illustrations!
I adore your channel. I only just found you, but I love that this is family affair. What a stunning outfit, how incredibly talented you are! Not to speak of the knowledge you both have. Love love love! PS is that an accent I hear? I can't place it and it's driving me crazy! hahaha.
Love the look
Looks modern but with much better quality.
Everything looks so well sewn. Do you do everything on machine or do you do the finishing with hand stitching? I have seen you hand sew some of your women’s clothing, but is it the same finishing process for men’s wear?
And are the britches lined with wool flannel? Looks so soft.
Nicely done, but where is your man servant to assist you ???!!! Also, wasn’t the Windsor knot introduced to England by Prince Edward (later to become Edward the 8th) when he came back from America? I thought that was why it is called a Windsor knot.
I've heard the same, but not cofnirmed it - Edward VIII certainly liked wider knots, and I gather that the 'Double Windsor' or 'Full Windsor' was used to emulate that look.
So, the name may be based on the later popularity of the knot, but the tying method likely predates Edward's use.
Hubby looks good.
This video was just a joy :)
Those are lovely boots. ❤
Oh, this is fun!
Cape I’d gorgeous!❤
Is there a pattern for that cape? I need it!
Self drafted by will be in my book in men’s tailoring !
Awesome!!! Thank you for replying. 🥰
And...
Boots matter the most.
There's no possibility of underappreciation whole clothing too!
Thank you!
Was this filmed last December? I'd be shocked to hear you've already gotten that much snow in October.
(I got to enjoy the UK snow back then. Walks night and day on Hampstead Heath!)
Last January, in Lithuania!
You look like Lord Grantham from Downtown Abbey.Very nice.
As always very interesting.
Dashing!
Loved the video as always. Just the question about the shirt. Should it be little bit roomier and longer? I own a couple replicas of shirts from the turn of the 19th and 20 th century and some originals as-well. They seem to be much roomier for me. It is actually one of the reasons why I like to wear them.
Toll, eine super schöne Mode für Herren.
lovely fabrics
Where is the detachable collar and cuffs, they were common in late 19th and early 20th centuries
Yes, for more formal wear!
It was common for them to wear softer versions for leisurely settings, shirts with attached collars didn't became widespread until the 1920s. And also the shirt tails were much longer than today.
Also the homburg is okay, but in terms of historical accuracy,it would've been seen as inappropriate to wear a homburg in the countryside. Instead many men opted for more casual headwear such as flat caps or deerstalker hats. (I know because I wear Edwardian menswear everyday).
But you did a good job in the tailoring.
This was interesting! Thanks!
Why wouldn't you do the bottom buttons on the waistcoat later on?
So that a certain king would t he embarrassed as he could t do his button….
@@priorattire I would have spoken to my tailor about that . . .
It was out of respect for Edward VII, not George V or VI.
The balmacaan and Inverness need to make a comeback. 👍🏻
re: garters - would the britches tying not hold the socks up? or do you need both?
Depending on the fit of the britches you could skip them, but for vigourous activity it's nice to have a back up.
