The Sopranos details the modern gangsters. When people think of gangsters they think of Capone, Michael Corleone and Tony Montana. A mixture of fictional and glorified real life people. They are barely recognizable in The Sopranos when organized crime was reduced to its street origins. They couldn't even live like their predecessors.
I think they learned from their mistakes, especially with nice openings and good endings. Nucky Thompson is based on Nucky Johnson, a real gangster who was fatter and balder, much like Tony Soprano, but they went in a different direction with Steve Buscemi.
Sadly, Lucky Johnson, the man HBO based Nucky's character on, died from old age in a retirement home somewhere in Northern New Jersey in the early 1960's. Far removed from his rich, bootlegging days, Lucky was destitute and alone with the passing of his wife some years earlier. 🇵🇷🇺🇸😪
I think that Boardwalk Empire is WAY better. It just feels more realistic. Boardwalk Empire isn't going through the innovation stage, like The Sopranos did. You can even tell that the camerawork, acting, and writing is different throughout the seasons of The Sopranos. Boardwalk Empire sticks to it's principles and stays true to its design as The Sopranos should have done. Though each are special in their own way as I understand, Boardwalk Empire is a better concept for a HBO series.
Just think how insane it would be if stuff like this actually happened in real life with mobsters killing dozens of people in a short time. Thankfully this is stuff only seen in movies and tv
The mafia ended so long ago. I can see where the writers of The Sopranos were coming from, but it was simply unrealistic to write about a modern mafia.

Anyone think the guy at 1:50 saying “what about the north side killings” looks and sounds like Harry Anderson? The age is all off, obviously, but I can’t shake it.
So obviously that’s inspired by the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, but in truth obviously Capone was no where near the scene when his gunmen-all dressed as cops-lined 7 Irish bootleggers/gangsters from his rival Bugs Moran’s northside outfit up against a wall and blew them away. And maybe most ironic, this scene kicks things off for season 3, but in reality, it was the beginning of the end for Capone; all the political figures in his pocket and influence he bought in Northern Illinois didn’t matter when the attention this bloodbath drew nationally led the Feds to declare all out war on the Capone Organization.
Was this mayor talking about 1924 or 2024, cuz i don't think much had changed in Chicago and New York in the last 100 years but the politicians sure sound the same
Yes but not literally because that happened in Chicago 1929, not Atlantic City 1923. The real event is referenced in season 5 after the time jump to 1931. But it's visually similar to depictions of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, such as the one in the original Howard Hawks Scarface
I don't see how Christopher is a shitty character at all. No worse than Margaret or Gillian, surely. (Did everyone enjoy that pre-natal care storyline last season? No, I didn't think so.)
