I don't understand why you would say that the Keylight Air has a smaller footprint and is better for smaller desks. The Keylight air clearly has a bigger footprint and would take up much more space on your desk than the legacy Keylight. The clamping mechanism on the legacy keylight has a smaller footprint. It barely takes up any space on your desk because it clamps to the side of it.
I don't understand why they didn't include a clamp with the Air. The base is going to take up more space. The clamp is one of the big benefits with the regular key light
Not sure if people know this, but the air has a standard 1/4 screw - if you’ve got one already you can save desk space by replacing the pole with the elgato mount (or a standard 1/4 Amazon mount) instead.
Really appreciate this overview - exactly the logic based comparison I was looking for. I actually find myself thinking that for my scenario, requiring two lights - a combination of one of each might actually be a good fit. Thanks again!
I'm loving both but wish the base of the air could be detached so the OG's clamp could be added. nothing worse than having more things sitting on the desk than necessary. also would justify me getting the OG for key lighting and a less expensive, less powerful air for the fill light
Sorry Juan I disagree about table space... I find that since I have a smaller table space the table clamp of the key light helps me save a ton of space. True, it also limits the design of the table for clamp to work
My worst hardware purchase this year. Got an Elgato Keylight Air. I does not work. check also the app reviews. (2.2 stars..and this is generous). Bottomline is that is uses 2.4GHz wifi instead of 'mordern' 5 GHz wifi that most people have. Requires you to reset and tweak advanced networking as well as wifi settings. Just a pain and a huge waste of time for such a simple device, I wish it had at least physical switches to set the brightness and warmth. But it does not.
The Elgato key light air is a budget key light. It does NOT take up less desk space by being on a stand. It does happen to be more portable. But overall it’s a smaller panel with less adjustability and no desk mount so that you can get the same quality lighting for a cheaper price. This video does not convey this well at all
I have a big desk, with three monitors on it. And no room for the keylight air. But plenty of room for the keylight. I just don't understand why he says if you have a big desk get the keylight? And small desk for keylight air..... It's like exactly the opposite
If you could mount the Key Light, it would have been perfect. Because it has a base and you cannot clamp it to the desk, makes it a big no for me. I'd rather clamp it.
Exactly what i'm thinking! When he said use the key light if you have a big desk and key light air if you have a small desk, i'm like "wat?" The key light air has a bigger footprint on a desk than the table clamp. I actually don't know if i'm missing something lol
Looking forward to setting up my lighting properly with this Key Light Air. My desk does not have the ability to clamp the key light on the left side; I had to feed the pole through the cord hole in the desk and use the mount on the crossbar below the drawer of my desk to get it to work. This base with the key light air is just what I needed since I cannot clamp, thank you so much for this new product!
In what world does the Key Light Air offer a smaller footprint? It's literally the opposite. The base is huge and take up so much room on your desk. Wish they just sold it with the clamp instead to keep the desk nice and tidy.
I was so excited to get two key light airs from Amazon, and they both came with UK CA adapters. Gotta send them right back. Can’t use here in the US. Anyone else have this trouble. Perhaps I’ll look at new egg.
I dont why you guys talking like the stand that light air comes with takes less space lol. Its actually takes more space because maybe it is a smaller factor, but the original key light clamps to your desk with physically takes no space at all since its resting from the back of your desk so you have more space on your desk to work with. If I were to put a setup of two light airs on my table it would literally take 30% of my space and i probably couldnt even set them on because of my monitors. I think clamp is way better solution and If key air came with a clamp I would 100% go with a double light air setup because its the most easiest and simple solution to my dark room, but now I guess I will have to satisfy myself with one normal light because 2 are just an overkill
This was my confusion too. How can this be better? I guess it's about the overall broadcast area. It seems to imply that the OG-key light is too bright if you're in a smaller area?
Really helpful comparison, thanks! But how does the Air have a "smaller footprint" with that massive base?? The original Key Light with the clamp would seemingly be a much smaller footprint on your desk (given it's main bulk is hovering several feet above it :D)
I bought the Elgato Key Light Air not for space reasons (which is not much of an argument) but because it was cheaper and I figured it was good enough for my needs (mostly zoom calls).
HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING!!! I just started my content channel for tech and keep trying to find better lighting and i think i just found the sweetness. Thanks!
With one key light (any lighting for that matter) you're going to have a shadow across one side of your face and more of a harsh lighting look depending on how bright the light is. With two, you'll even it out a lot. If you want to learn more about lighting in general, just google 3 point lighting. It's one of the most basic film setups.
Hi, I was checking the review and I wanted to say thanks for the comparison. I really needed something to clear up my mind. I don't want to spend a lot of money but I want to spend the money right. I already have a neewer a bit outdated 40$ led lamp and I'm looking to use it as a back light and buy a better performing main light. I also have a very small desktop like 37 inches x 18. I need a light the lights me up for good, not powered by batteries and that can have a nice soft light without having umbrellas and other stuff. I make also reviews where I am standing. Do you think I can take a Key Light air and use a tripod when I am standing or it's better to go straight for big one? Also I would like to clamp it to the desk when I am streaming so I would like to if there is a way to clamp the air as well. Thanks a lot
For your needs, especially because you want to clamp it, the larger Key Light is probably the better choice. You would need to add third-party attachments to put a clamp on the Air. It's possible, but clumsy.
Hi Josie yes the Key Light (original) I find is even better than the KL Air because it has FOUR standard 1/4" tripod mount threads, one on each edge! Whereas I find the air clumsy with the thread on the back - you'd need a ballhead that goes to 90' degrees to properly mount that to standard poles and tripods IMHO. The mounting options alone is why I went with the more expensive Key Light over the Air.
The keylight doesn't have a base plate attachment so connecting it to a tripod that way wouldn't work. You could probably attach it to a C-Stand by clamping it partially up the pole. But the keylight is designed to clamp onto your desk.
The Key Light Air? Caveat emptor! This light is a disaster. Here at a major U.S. university we had three members of our I.T. staff attempt to establish connectivity with these lights using Android, Mac, and PC devices over the course of two weeks. We tried everything, but today we finally gave up. These lights absolutely trip all over themselves, but they will NOT allow you to connect to the Elgato Control Center. You can make the lights show up on your Wifi screens, you can use their MAC addresses to tell your network they're approved, you can make the lights blink, you can reset them...but when all is said and done, the lights just want to establish another meaningless Wifi connection instead of completing the one you're on. This means you have no control over the intensity and temperature of the lights. We returned our lights to Amazon who said they will be returning them to the manufacturer. As replacement lights, we ordered several RALENO RGB Streaming Key Lights with Remote Control & Built-in Battery from Amazon. We have also filed a complaint with the FCC, since the Elgato Key Light Air is a defective product that should be subject to enforecement action.
is this lighting good for artist that do video drawing in the desk i need something lightweight like this light does its good for the video drawing record ?
this is designed for streaming, but i don't see why the keylight wouldn't work for art. Just remember, if you're doing colored artwork, you're going to want to make sure you have neutral lighting so your colors are as accurate as possible.
Nah. If you're a streamer and have lights in your face all day the keylight is so much better than a harsh ring light. Those gave me migraines. The keylights you can stare into without any discomfort

I like how both products were shown in the actual video to help decide.
You might choose for the Key Light if you have a large desk with room for the clamp. Lol you need more space for that foot from the Key Light Air
Really appreciate this overview - exactly the logic based comparison I was looking for. I actually find myself thinking that for my scenario, requiring two lights - a combination of one of each might actually be a good fit. Thanks again!

He literally said keykight air has a smaller footprint. The fucking keylight has virtually no footprint. Keylight air has a huge foot on it

Is it possible to buy a clamp system for the key light air? You would have to be able to remove the light and attach it to another pole with a clamp.

Super informative video with no fluff. Thank you!!!
In Amazon india Keylight is available for ₹73,617 which is $989.06

The old one has many more advantages. Mainly the size for better lighting.
if i buy the normal key light do i need 2 key lights or i just need 1 key light
Good video but missed the main point. The Key Light takes up less space than the Key Light Air on a desk.
I don’t think the space that they take up are main points of these products lol. Main point? Really?
How the hell does Air has less footprint then a clamp of original?
Can I use them on tripods?
Thanks for this video!
What is your opinion on using the popular Nanoleaf as an alternative?
No info anywhere on the CRI?

Hey, awesome review! What's the difference of having 1 Key Light in front, compared to 2 Key Lights (L and R at the desk)?

Can either light apparatus be removed from the stand it comes in and be used on another 3rd party light stand?
this video is super useless thanks. plus elgato key light is better for smaller tables. simply bc it doesnt take space on the surface. hello?
Yeah I know right! 🤣🤣
Bout to slap some gorilla tape and slap that base under my desk. Damned if I pay 80 more for a clamp.
Cool explication 🔥 excellent vidéo
