The housing in phones is deeper than laptop lids. There is room for more stuff. Yes, there was/is room for improvement for laptops but the engineering problem is different and they will always be behind.
Very nice comparisons. Though in almost all cases, I found what made the biggest difference was the webcam quality. Your unlit Macbook example looked better than most of the well-lit examples from other webcams.
the Elgato Key Light air is a nightmare to set up, you need a 2.4GHz WiFi network, who has that anymore lol I couldn't set it up and returned after many frustrating tries

I found this really helpful! I have 2 Razer Ring Lights that have about a 6-9 month lifespan. They were both replaced by Razer, and the next set had the same problem! I came here looking for the next best/better solution. Do you have any comments about how long those lights you have reviewed last? Thanks!

This was such a good overview/review, thank you for this! One thing I thought about was that it could be an idea to have a small thumbnail with a picture of the light you tested, it would be a bit easier to keep track of which model is which compared to just reading the model name, just for a couple of seconds. But as I said, a super good review, one of the best I've seen, thanks!
Wait.. this is called "Best Light", and I was all set to find the link for the first, affordable one - a ring light -.. until you said "I tend to avoid ring lights, as they don't look natural to the viewer". Um.. okayyy... so, why is this in the "Best" list then?

however it is ridiculous that they keep selling laptops with these bad cameras. The cheapest of today's phone front cameras is much better

Where was the light placed for your review; head on, camera right, camera left, even with head level, higher, lower??

The gvm was surprisingly great compared to the other ones with similar price.

I honestly think that some of the cheaper lights looked better because of the fact your face looked less grey

With the greatest respect, for your own opinion, the Elgato Air was [clearly] the most flattering light in all tests. IMHO, of course. 😉
I personally didn't like the Genaray in any of the tests. My top picks were the Elgato Key Light Air, Elgato Key Light, GVM light, and the Aperture.

I think the gvm punches above its weight. You could do a multi-light setup with the gvm for the same price as one of the more expensive options.
