Few people know that Gotye never agreed to play ads in the video on RUclips. He had lost many millions of dollars and it was his conscious decision. What a brilliant act in the name of Art!
This song has an interesting backstory to it. Gotye's parents bought him a Cotillion D575, which quickly became his favorite instrument. He made this song on the instrument along with a little bit of computer touch-ups in it. He uses a sped up sample of a song called Green is the Mountain by Francis Yip, which makes up part of the beat in this song. But that is not all of what the song is about. The song tells the story of a family taken over by technology, in turn, displaying how we have grown so dependent on technology and it eventually takes over our lives. That is the basic story behind the song.

Gonzalo Hernan dude same here, and then my friend pulled me aside and was like "dude you know that 'Somebody you use to know' guy? He does more and it's amazing." And boy was he right haha
This song and video have special meaning to me. It is an ode to the Lowrey Organ model D-575, given the model name "Cotillion." It was introduced in the summer of 1981. I was with Lowrey at the time and I helped debug the prototype for presentation at the NAMM convention in Chicago. I was also the first person to play it in public, at the model introduction during the "Lowrey Breakfast" dealer meeting that year.
The video has an allegorical meaning to me becoming clear by the fate of "The Family" in the video. They are strar-struck by "something"(it can be anything in your life) that makes them become totally absorbed in it and lose their self. I'm not sure if the artist of the video or the song had the most influence on it because it's clearly influenced by the video but also the lyrics.
MASTERPIECE!! I am sooooo hurt by the music scene when they call Gotye a 'one hit wonder' - They've barely scrathed the surface of Gotye amazing work!!
I love the concept of "be careful what you wish for lest you become it".The whole, "let's get the newest technology which eventually overtakes our lives". Gotye never fails to impress me. Videos are a visual feast. Thanks for always whetting my appetite.
The guy is a genuine creative, and unfortunately modern popular society just doesn't seem interested in that, they want simple, samey, repetitive music. I feel like he would've thrived in the 80's, when electronic music was about feeling and creativity. First heard this on some Dynamo show in like 2012 and it's never gotten old, just as amazing now as the first time I listened. So underrated.
man, he sure is underrated. I mean look at how well thought out this concept was. Also, his music has so many layers that I cant even comprehend what's going on. Nice bass lines tho
Don’t forget how they didn’t include the part where the presenter guy goes “incidentally, there were no keyboard performances, just the occasional pressing of buttons” jk
Epitychís Productions yeah the animator and Goethe were on completely different wavelengths, but I also can’t be mad at the animator, this video is so damn good

Every time a commercial or someone else says "State of the Art", this song plays in my head. Thank you Gotye, for giving me music while there is no music actually playing!
I'll always believe he just dipped after somebody that I used to know because he didn't like the mega fame. He was much happier being decently successful and having a manageable, devout following.
I mean, technically he isn't since his song Eyes Wide Open hit #96 like a week after Somebody That I Used To Know hit #1. But honestly he was never going to be a consistent hit maker. His sound is just too indie and with too much substance for the brainless pop industry.
There are lots of artists of which videos don't match the music and I rather close my eyes and imagine it. But this video does match the music and is *State Of The Art!* :)
AndrewTM Music Official Are you saying I’m a bad person because I like anime when it’s not even an anime profile it’s a game profile that’s an anime game but still if you’re going to try to insult me on something that I’m not ashamed of I don’t know please try to insult me on my stupid name
When this song was released in 2011, it quickly became my favorite. I got my first tattoo honoring this song. The music inspired and taught me a lot in my music production career. Even today, 12 years later, 'State of The Art' remains my favorite song. A lot of sensitivity, musicality, magnificent tones, technology. I've lost count of how many people I've introduced to this song. I believe everyone should know this work of art and discover where music and art can reach.
This song is amazing. The slow meandering beat, combined with the deep, powerful computerized voice fits perfectly with the beautiful more instrumental bits. One of my favorite songs. Truly.
Still so many years later, and this song is still just as amazing. I could honestly talk about this for hours. The song itself is an absolute masterpiece! Possibly one of the best pieces (musically) that I’ve ever heard. There are just so many layers, that you can almost always discover something new. And there are so many hooks in it! Like the violins, the wind instruments, the harmonies.. And then we have the MV. And everything fits absolutely perfectly with the song. The message is there, there’s a clear story, and every little musical cue is being amplified by the animation. Almost to a point where the song wouldn’t be the same without it. But I think he wrote the song prior to working on the video, which means the animator(s) and storyboard artist(s) are also just THAT good! It’s incredible to see true genius play off each other so well.
This is by rhythm, bass lines and over all structure a reggae song. On the other hand the overall tone of the tune is much closer to darker electro/synth genres.
it's a shame gotye is only known by most as that guy who made somebody we used to know and not bangers like this. genuinely one of the best songs i have ever heard in my life
It’s honestly astonishing how modern the theme of this song is. At its time there were probably mainly predictions of how computers would evolve and holy shit now this is really relatable, with how AI is evolving.
Looking at this and listening from a musicians point of view. The new age has grown accustomed to the new synthetic sounds of music instead of the real thing. Therefore the music sounds more robotic. Just how I see it. The concept and art is too great.
Alright so, like, people are stuck in the future. With Gotye's "Somebody that I Used To Know" with Kimbra, but they don't listen to old shit. Like this, this is fantastic.
William Charles Doran same age and same time are slightly different statements. song prob wasn't written at the same time but are the same age due to being released at the same time. this song is great though regardless
Woah...This is one amazing song. I like how all of the parts fit together smoothly, and the video is so well executed with the animation. It gave me chills all the way through it. Hope you continue to make more amazing music!
So you say this is “State of the Art” eh? Nah, more like beyond the state of art! It’s… it’s… a catalyst of transcending magnificence. Alright, I’ll see myself out now.
Yep. Except the piano is really our iPhones. Its about our materialistic tech-lust making us forget how to be human, and ironically turning us into robots. In other words, "In Corporate America...product consumes you"
Jonathan Roman "In Corporate America...product consumes you" is it a particular quote from somewhere? I really like it. Nice mix of allusion and cynical irony.
Honestly, my favorite Gotye song! I tried to teach myself how to play this song, and now my brain defaults to the chords in this song when trying to play keyboard :/ Also kinda interesting they went for a 60/70's animation style when I believe the Lowery Cotillion D575 was produced in the early 1980's! One more thing can someone make a Beat Saber level with this song?!
Yes they are samples look at roomies vid of samples he looks at somebody that i used to know if that seems fun to you... (I just said roomie bc i found it like a hour before i saw this)
*This song is so stellar!* ⭐ _This song reminds me..._ When I was a kid (in the 70s), my family went to the fair. Apart from the rides & games there was a peddler selling electric organs (catering to families.) The man showed us one and let me play with the presets. It was... State of the Art............ But it was a bit too pricy for us and I hadn't begun piano lessons yet. So we got a Hi-Fi instead. And it was..... State of the Art... too. LOL!
@visibleconfusion9513 I'm thinking more like The Six Million Dollar Man. But hear me out. It's like, somebody today had to be revived with old tech that was almost forgotten about.
He never fails to scare the living crap out of me. The visuals here are right out of my childhood nightmares. It REALLY REALL MESSES WITH MY BRAIN because my brain wants me to believe there are more things on the front of that TV than there actually are. 2:34 the reflection of the lamp on the TV appears to be a window.
The funny thing is that the "trippy" effect you are getting is reality. There is nothing more trippy than reality and the world we live in. That's what the song is about and being totally consumed like so many people are around the world.
"Gotye made one song and left" is just a different way of saying "We only listened to one song and didn't bother checking out the rest". Everytime I see that tweet, I can't help but think "their loss".
That's not such a bad thing really. It got him more widely noticed on the world stage so that he can bless more audience with his body of work. And in its defense, it WAS a good song. I'm sure he's still proud of "Somebody That I Used To Know" as he ever was.
It's a catchy tune for sure. But some of the remixes you can find sitting around outperform it tbh. This, GMAC, 7 Hours and DYOH are better than it imho.
I love his music so much, it’s so refreshing to listen to even after it’s been released for 10+ years. It’s so good hearing a true artist who puts so much work into their songs. I really wish he came back. Such a musical genius
Could this song perhaps be a message about technology ruining music? Stating that everything is so mechanized by synthesizers and mixing software that everything is practically done for you and there is hardly any creativity or ingenuity involved? Just an idea.
***** That actually makes sense, There was a part in the song that said, these amazing simulations end up sounding better then the real thing, that gives this theory real support
+David Rodriguez But Gotye is an artist that creates songs almost completely by combining samples from all kinds of old dusty records that no one knows anymore. Without mixing software his music would be entirely different, and you cannot say there isn't any creativity involved on Gotye's part... This song sounds more like a 70-ties advertisement for an organ like this.
+Duncan Blair At face value, I'd say yes, but what does the tone of the song and ESPECIALLY the music video remind you of? A radical discovery (in America, 196X) appears and destroys the concept of the nuclear family, as a cautionary tale. This is a satire of propaganda films. This is to music what Reefer Madness is to weed. And I know you weren't slating Gotye specifically, but you _can't_ say that this song, which incorporates all those things, is void of creativity or ingenuity (much of Making Mirrors was made with this 'state of the art' synth, as 'outdated' as it now seems) It's just a different way of doing things.
Please Wally, if you're reading this. We need more Goyte material! You are one of the most unique and talented musicians ever. It's nearly 2019, make it your year!
Been listening to this song for about 12 years and it still delights me. I used to DM Gotye every time I had MDMA and it was mainly to tell him he’s a top lad and there’s no pressure to make another record.
If there was ever a song that embodied it's title... This SONG is IT!!!! A 'STATE OF THE ART SONG' by a STATE OF THE ART amalgamation of ARTISTS!!! An absolute SENSATIONAL track! I only hope someone can create and extended version 😍😍

As a person involved in AI research, I came back to this song after pondering about the current state of computer generated art. How it expressed the oddity of the things that are about to come is unnervingly accurate.

When the Cotillion arrived
We threw out the television
Model D 575
Has custom flute presets
And Harmony-Plus in addition
Now for an arm and a leg
We get three half-dozen beats to choose from
So now we can pretend
That there's an orchestra in the loungeroom
I put the Genie Bass on
So my left hand can play the choir
With 16ft Diapason
And Lowrey's patented Orchestral Symphonizer
Banjo's great on repeat
The kids want to play but they'll have to be patient
The wife can't help tapping her feet
It's a genuine home entertainment revelation

State, state, state, state of the art
Now we don't want to go out
When we could spend the night at home with the Cotillion
Invite the neighbours around
Start the bossanova beat and limbo from the living to the kitchen
Enjoy the state of the art
The Magic Swing Piano really is astounding
Now we can't tell them apart
But these amazing simulations end up sounding even better than the real thing

Gonzalo Hernan dude same here, and then my friend pulled me aside and was like "dude you know that 'Somebody you use to know' guy? He does more and it's amazing." And boy was he right haha
Every single song on this album is amazing.
Check out "Hearts a mess"
This song and video have special meaning to me. It is an ode to the Lowrey Organ model D-575, given the model name "Cotillion." It was introduced in the summer of 1981. I was with Lowrey at the time and I helped debug the prototype for presentation at the NAMM convention in Chicago. I was also the first person to play it in public, at the model introduction during the "Lowrey Breakfast" dealer meeting that year.
Wow, that's so cool. I know your comment is four years old but if you should read this... Do you remember how long the development of the D-575 took?
What a really cool connection to have with the song! Thank you so much for sharing that!
So you're basically the Miles Dyson in this, yes?
The video has an allegorical meaning to me becoming clear by the fate of "The Family" in the video. They are strar-struck by "something"(it can be anything in your life) that makes them become totally absorbed in it and lose their self. I'm not sure if the artist of the video or the song had the most influence on it because it's clearly influenced by the video but also the lyrics.
thats absoloutley insane! i could never imagine someone making a song about something i worked on, that must be insane!!!!!
MASTERPIECE!! I am sooooo hurt by the music scene when they call Gotye a 'one hit wonder' - They've barely scrathed the surface of Gotye amazing work!!
Why does that hurt you? He had 1 hit.
So underrated.
ok boomer
@@blumeshullman8002 All its taken is two words from you for me to understand that you're a complete mong.
@@blumeshullman8002 Did you travel here from 2019?
I have to admit, I'd LOVE to hear how Gotye would have sounded as a New Wave musician.
80s style synth pop is having a huge resurgence now.
Buzzfeed article "When this cotillion arrives, what the family does next will blow your mind away."
"So basically, this Marxist cotillion arrived, and it's fucking amazing."
I wish Gotye was more recognised, his music is so underrated
man, he sure is underrated. I mean look at how well thought out this concept was. Also, his music has so many layers that I cant even comprehend what's going on. Nice bass lines tho
This song reminds me why I’m so passionate about music. It’s just so layered and beautiful to the ears. It just never stops giving.
If I’m ever killed by a robot, please play this at my funeral
I'll show this comment to your family and make it happen; RIP my friend!
Aye lad, will do

Ok
Instead of robots, we got a virus now
0:47 It really annoys me how they didn't get rid of the television.
Don’t forget how they didn’t include the part where the presenter guy goes “incidentally, there were no keyboard performances, just the occasional pressing of buttons” jk
Epitychís Productions yeah the animator and Goethe were on completely different wavelengths, but I also can’t be mad at the animator, this video is so damn good
@@guiAstorDunc sorry I just commented that because I remember it from the iTunes track 7 years ago -
It kinda reminds me of 3D Space Cadet Pinball of Windows XP

BlockMechanics “Yes darling, it’s all here in chapter 6.”
“Ok sweetie, have fun.”
"yeah, its right under the part about.. what does that say? turning into whistle people.. yeah, Yeah no that seems right."
Every time a commercial or someone else says "State of the Art", this song plays in my head. Thank you Gotye, for giving me music while there is no music actually playing!
I haven't heard a commercial use the phrase "state of the art" for about 40 years.
It's insane how they can make a damn Piano seem scary.
You haven't played Super Mario 64.
LOOOL!
is not a piano
pablolst I know, it's a cotillion. But the Cotillion features a similar feel and look to the Piano.
pablolst
Yeah, it's...an alien?
Repeat after me: GOTYE IS NOT A ONE-HIT-WONDER!
He's really not. This entire album is great.
I feel like breaking someone's face when they say that. I am just sad he isn't putting out any music anymore. But one can hope. :3
Technically he is tho
There are lots of artists of which videos don't match the music and I rather close my eyes and imagine it.
But this video does match the music and is *State Of The Art!* :)
daaaaaaang reaaaaaaally
Bassotronics this is a life lessons . Goyte says high. I really don't like to be made fun of.
LIAR!
maybe the video refers to the more simple meaning of state of the art which is futuristic. so basically he would like to say"FUC# EDM!"
all of his music videos are sublimely animated. I'm almost curious enough to look them up and see if they have any short films
god, I hate when my piano goes sicko mode and controls my family it happens all the time

It’s State of the Art ❤
This song is amazing. The slow meandering beat, combined with the deep, powerful computerized voice fits perfectly with the beautiful more instrumental bits. One of my favorite songs. Truly.
the production is absolutely amazing on this.

this is a masterpiece, it is art
It's state of the art.
+Cewa Paiget exactly buddy

LOCO CUZ
+zizi8 hi
Most creative song I have ever heard!! Definitely one of my faves on his album..
Incredible artist, incredible song...
I agree with u... The problem is that no one really sees the talent in him besides the duet he did with kimbra
Exactly- he's one of the most talented musicians I've ever heard but he's so underrated :(
ulises mendoza The saddest part is Kimbra is also only known as the girl in STIYTK
MCR3127 yep...it's pretty sad
ulises mendoza I fuckin love Kimbra so much
What would you even call this genre? This is an awesome song and I need anything else even remotely similar.
i can't figure the genre out. but gorillaz sound quite similar to this.
I can tell that you came from Tribetwelve. Welcome to Gotye
There's nothing quite like it - it doesn't really fit into any genre, except some kind of experimental electronica
Well I know how you got here
I first heard this on tribetwelve
And judging my your RUclips picture
So did you
This is by rhythm, bass lines and over all structure a reggae song. On the other hand the overall tone of the tune is much closer to darker electro/synth genres.
it's a shame gotye is only known by most as that guy who made somebody we used to know and not bangers like this. genuinely one of the best songs i have ever heard in my life
My favorite
It's a decent track, yep.
This is a true masterpiece. Nothing more to say.
It's like somebody opens my head and gives my brain a massage. Can't stop listening to this.
Man the City of Townsville got weird after the Professor and the Powerpuff Girls left.

Should be revered as a timeless classic. Thanks Gotye

Wish I could hear this for the 1st time again
Alright so, like, people are stuck in the future. With Gotye's "Somebody that I Used To Know" with Kimbra, but they don't listen to old shit. Like this, this is fantastic.
These two songs are approximately the same age. If you want old shit, find The Basics.
William Charles Doran
Actually, they are on the same album, so in terms of when they were released they are almost exactly the same age.
Eeeehhh songs are generally not written at almost exactly the same time, even if they're on the same album. They could be years apart from each other.
William Charles Doran Even most of The Basic's stuff was written alongside this stuff
This song makes me think I'm in 2060

More surprised to see comments from 4 years ago
So you say this is “State of the Art” eh? Nah, more like beyond the state of art! It’s… it’s… a catalyst of transcending magnificence.
Alright, I’ll see myself out now.
So the piano basically enchants people, turns them into robots and brings them to it's home planet? That's some dark shit. Love it, though. :D
Its about the state of synthetic modern music.
Yep. Except the piano is really our iPhones. Its about our materialistic tech-lust making us forget how to be human, and ironically turning us into robots. In other words, "In Corporate America...product consumes you"
gotta love people acting their interpretations of music are the end all
Jonathan Roman Nice interpretation
love it
Jonathan Roman "In Corporate America...product consumes you" is it a particular quote from somewhere? I really like it. Nice mix of allusion and cynical irony.
This proves that the creative mind is not a thing of the past, and art is not dead.

Honestly, my favorite Gotye song!
I tried to teach myself how to play this song, and now my brain defaults to the chords in this song when trying to play keyboard :/
Also kinda interesting they went for a 60/70's animation style when I believe the Lowery Cotillion D575 was produced in the early 1980's!
One more thing can someone make a Beat Saber level with this song?!
This song is genius. It's so unique. You can totally hear the effort in it
It's 70s lounge music with modern production and a vocoder. It's a good track and a nice tribute to 70s organ music, but it's not "unique".

*This song is so stellar!* ⭐ _This song reminds me..._
When I was a kid (in the 70s), my family went to the fair. Apart from the rides &
games there was a peddler selling electric organs (catering to families.) The man
showed us one and let me play with the presets. It was... State of the Art............
But it was a bit too pricy for us and I hadn't begun piano lessons yet. So we got a
Hi-Fi instead. And it was..... State of the Art... too. LOL!
I feel like this would low-key be a good theme song for a movie or series

@visibleconfusion9513 I'm thinking more like The Six Million Dollar Man. But hear me out. It's like, somebody today had to be revived with old tech that was almost forgotten about.
Absolutely my most favorite song of all time. I can listen to it over and over again. so many great sounds going on throughout.
I love when an artist do not focus on only voice but instruments, rythm, variety. That's why I love him!
Me too
He never fails to scare the living crap out of me.
The visuals here are right out of my childhood nightmares.
It REALLY REALL MESSES WITH MY BRAIN because my brain wants me to believe there are more things on the front of that TV than there actually are.

Another one that scared me too when I was little is « your hearts a mess »
Calm down. Take a breath. Lol
This video and song is so trippy, i can smell it
The funny thing is that the "trippy" effect you are getting is reality. There is nothing more trippy than reality and the world we live in. That's what the song is about and being totally consumed like so many people are around the world.
Nah I think you got coke in your nose
Christo how is that what the song is about?
conan1412 "Now we don't wanna go out, when you can spend at night at how with the piano (whatever word that is)" That's not being consumed?
Christo it's a "cotillion piano", quite a few dif versions. My grandparents still have theirs. F#*K I LOVED THAT THING!!! XD
Gotye never disappoints with his artistic value
"These amazing simulations end up sounding even better than the real thing"
Some of my favorite song lyrics
"Gotye made one song and left" is just a different way of saying "We only listened to one song and didn't bother checking out the rest".
Everytime I see that tweet, I can't help but think "their loss".
you're so right
imo this is the best song to test headphone quality because of the sheer LAYERING
came back for this comment lol this been helping me find good headphones for months and i gotta thank you!
I just realized that this is basically a dub reggae song. In fact, the entire instrumental part in the middle 8 would be perfect for a freestyle IMO.
And to think he's known by the masses for Somebody I Used to Know...tsk tsk.
Heart's a Mess and Dig Your Own Hole are my two top faves.
so what it's a good song lol
I love his music so much, it’s so refreshing to listen to even after it’s been released for 10+ years. It’s so good hearing a true artist who puts so much work into their songs. I really wish he came back. Such a musical genius

This is one of the greatest songs ever created. No idea why this didn't get more kudos. Brilliant!
A state of the art D575 Organ can make a family turn into a weird collection of space robotic things? *Mind blown*.
Yeah, thats what u see in the video but the message that i get from it is that satan uses music to possess the minds of innocent lives
Some might call the collection *The Collective.*
Ray Linder THIS IS WHY WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS
A pure casual masterclass in songwriting, mixing and mastering . GOTYE
Words can’t express how much I love his art. I even watch the behind the scenes of him making songs!!!
+Duncan Blair +
hence the line 3 half dozen beats to choose from 6 6 6
+Duncan Blair At face value, I'd say yes, but what does the tone of the song and ESPECIALLY the music video remind you of? A radical discovery (in America, 196X) appears and destroys the concept of the nuclear family, as a cautionary tale.
This is a satire of propaganda films. This is to music what Reefer Madness is to weed. And I know you weren't slating Gotye specifically, but you _can't_ say that this song, which incorporates all those things, is void of creativity or ingenuity (much of Making Mirrors was made with this 'state of the art' synth, as 'outdated' as it now seems)
It's just a different way of doing things.
+John Roberts. Omg 😈😱👣
ever noticed how loads of gotye's songs have sad endings?
***** They all get turned into a family of robots and end up on Saturn or something.
TheWeeklySwindler That sounds awesome to me, not sad. :P
