“It was like to stop consuming is to stop being human and why would I make a change if you won’t? We’re all in the same boat staying afloat for the moment.” I’ve remember this line for nearly a decade now.
I wonder if humans as they are now without evolving or changing some important parts of our DNA can actually create a stable society where no one Has to kill each other because of differences. I feel and fear that humanity may have to always have an enemy as we are now and therefore conflict will be unavoidable. Perhaps we’re still Carnal Monkeys on the very beginning of the Primitive Path. We are some new future’s Cavemen.
Okay totally off subject but I’ve been looking for this video for literally like 3 or 4 years now. I remembered watching it with my older brother when I was younger. It always bothered me because I didn’t know what this video was until I finally googled “music video with crane creatures” and it took me to a different gotye video then I saw this and was no way. I’m actually so satisfied and I can die happily now
I truly wish my godfather was still here for me to introduce him to all of Gotye's music. He would have adored the art as much as the meaning behind the music. Love you Woz - hope you're listening up there x
Many people seem to think that this song is about humans destroying the environment, which I have no trouble believing, but I almost feel like this song was written specifically to describe a situation involving a friend of mine and her husband. As I read the lyrics, it's just eerie how well it applies to their situation. Or at least, what it was the last time that I talked to her about it. That's what I love about music: The song can mean something totally different to one person from what the song's creator originally intended for it to be about. Music really is in the eye of the beholder.
I agree, that's what I love about writing poetry. I know what it means to me, but different others have their own perception and get their own meaning from the work. Love it. I think it's true of all the arts.
i saw the 'how this song came to existence' and goyte said what inspired him was that he had a beautiful garden owned by his parents and he was afraid of losing it
How can your friend override the world we live in? No offence, but that's stupid. I can think of other situations that this could apply to, but seriously, 'we walk the plank with our eyes wide open' is clearer than anything. We cut off our noses despite our faces.
Honestly feel Inlove with this song years ago, it speaks to me about my anxiety, and it shows us here that our earth isn’t reusable and we can’t dispose of it. It still makes me tear up. Thank you so much.
This video honestly makes me incredibly sad. It was pretty trippy at first, but then you start to see it differently. The people pulling up the buckets of dust are constantly searching for something to live for, but finding nothing. They wander the earth searching constantly, but all they see are the broken wasteland of everyday life. Nothing but destruction in their eyes. "We walk the plank with our eyes wide open" meaning they are constantly looking onward, trying to see something in the distance, but they are constantly going nowhere but down throughout life. There is literally nothing left in this world for these people to live for. Here come the tears.
The world had been destroyed by war, global warming, etc and now the last remaining are journeying just to find water but they only get dirt when they pull up their buckets. At least that's what I'm getting...
+I Love lmao, ohhh. That was a fast asf reply btw lol. I'm guessing it's not just the music but the video too. These kinds of artsy/weird videos intrigue me, so maybe you too. Plus you might just like the beat or the meaning and how they combine those to make a great song.
i started knowing i was a weird kid when i tried to show my middle school friends the kind of music i liked and his music videos- they would make fun of me after i tried to show them. not that the videos are that weird, but for some reason this is what really triggered my idea that i was strange. coming back to this after i graduated highschool alone is really bringing things to light for me. i was weird, i am weird, and i'm gonna be weird. but being alone is good company, at least. i'm so much older now, but i think i'm just the same weird little kid. i miss gotye.
None of my friends understood my choice in music such as these, but in the end being weird is more unique than being like everyone. I've come to appreciate that and I'm still in highschool.
I cant see how this only has 20 million views, whilst songs about girls and stuffhas over 100,000,000. and Gangnam Style has 2 billion when Goteye deserves far more than this, its amazing
Because this song is pretty boring. I mean, I can respect slow music, but I just don't really like this song. And, in my opinion, songs aren't really meant for making statements about serious, important things. But then again, I hate most popular music (like gangnam style, most pop songs, and most rap songs) so what do I know? the way I judge a song is mainly by if it sounds good, and secondly if it has either good lyrics, no lyrics, or lyrics that just don't bother me.
Erik P music was made for the sole purpose of how a person feels. It's all a statement on our view of things and how we feel. That's what it is, so if you don't listen to music for that purpose then why do you even listen to music??? All music has a statement.
All music isn't made to express an opinion or tell a story or something, lots of it is just for entertainment. And if the only reason to listen to this song is because it has a message, well that's just not good enough for me. What's the point of it being in a song, if the listener doesn't enjoy the musical aspect? By your reasoning, I could just read the lyrics and get the same effect as listening to it
Erik P All music tells a story, whether you realize it or not. This song is just pushing people to try and understand it's story. The song is also very well done, with Gotye's lyrical prowess showing with every word he sings. Overall, it's very enjoyable, especially when paired with the video.
he said “only a few ever worried, while the signs were clear they had no idea” felt that. not many people seem to consciously acknowledge that we are headed for disaster.
+How Sway It's simply cos Somebody was incredibly popular, while Eyes Wide Open only had moderate success as a single. Eyes Wide Open deals with a much more important subject, but I guess the people at large prefer relatable relationship stuff to challenging themes like the fact that we're destroying our planet.
obviously. You can't stress general public with coherent themes. Having big butts so boys with big dicks will want you is much more important to the nowadays society.
+Gaming 10s ~ I think it's hilarious, I knew a bunch of girls who remained fridget and became barren lesbians because they thought all men should have a 9inch dick and wouldn't take anything less because "they were worth it". They couldn't even spell their names correctly. Good looking girls, but completely braindead sluts who only saw men as sexual objects. Well now they are 30 and have nobody. Nothing wrong with an ass ladies, just be practical or enjoy becoming that weird 60 year old who everyone says is fun but everyone knows she's taking home every half bottle of wine leftover afterwards. Who gets invited to birthdays, but doesn't go because it's a reminder of how miserable, lonely and desperate her own life is.
reminds me of when me and my daughters mother split up after 10 years, that was almost 7 years ago now. what a beautiful and painful mess that was. I used her car one day so she could use my truck and I heard this. I knew her and I were done and nothing could save us this time. And the saddest thing, is all of it could've been avoided. .. but I wouldn't change a thing about my life. It was the safest and most happy, free feeling I've ever had
Such a powerful statement. But it's like to stop consuming is to stop being human; and why would I make a change if you wont. Realize you as an individual can make a change; don't wait for others to change before you.
It depends on the power relationships. If you are poor, you can't afford to neccessarily make ethical decisions. All individuals make decisions, but not all people can choose all of the choices due to limited financial limitations. Big corporations that sell cheap goods will exist no matter what terrible things they do. People will complain, but most will buy from them because their choices are limited. This is also the reason why poor people are more likely to steal.
This was his best song BY far, i was stunned that this was not his "defining work", "Someone i used to know", is an ok track for sure, but this utterly brilliant, so "Wally", just consider a little remaster and properly re release this, push it on youtube, then id make a custom vinly as well, this track is worthy of it

This hits so unbelievably different. Something about the spacious guitar riffs, upbeat drums, and the meaning behind the lyrics is so amazing to me. This video has over 30 million views but it feels as if nobody knows about it. Best wishes Gotye, hope you’re doing well. ❤
Agreed. In a time where the world needs us most.. just listen to Gotye. I feel this song deserves a resurgence into the space of top music just to put the lyrics themselves in front of the masses. Cause walking the the plank with our eyes wide open doesn't feel good for the many that are being tagged along purely from being strapped to those that deserve to actually jump. - just my two cents. haha
While I was shopping today this came on in the shop and I was irritating my friend so bad by singing it to her. It took me back so many years when my dad introduced me to the wider stretches of gotye when I was young. I love this song and the rest of his music it's all fantastic, they have so much meaning it's amazing how an artist can tell a whole true story in 4 minutes
I remember my dad would play this song and I found it annoying at the time but now I always listen to this song and it reminds me of him I wish we had the same bond like we use to
Get it back. Put yourself out there. I did but I wish I had done it earlier. He is gone now but we rebounded stronger than ever and I am so glad that we did. No Regrets, if you know what I mean. Do it.
We’re *all* in the same boat, staying afloat *for the moment* I think the best lyrics are the ones that seem to roll like a tide, in and out or high and low, yet, themata is always present.
I remember finding this song after hearing Somebody I Used to Know and honestly loving this song way more than that one, because of the soundscapes and lyrics and Gotye’s melodies are just hypnotic!
I hear "Some people offered up answers. We made off like we heard, they were only words. They didn't add up, to a change in the way we were living. And the saddest thing, is all of this could have been avoided."
steelrain64 humanity could have all the technology in the world to end world hunger and cancer for ever and we would still be killing each other because of our natural greed and hatred for others who seem different or are better or lesser then us, and the sooner we/you/(obama
steelrain64 If people didn't have weapons, they would kill each other with their bare hands. We don't need a world without weapons, and we don't need a world without religion, we need a world without hatred and greed. Remove those two things, weapons won't be needed, and religions will be those of love and peace, as opposed to those of intolerance and control.
If it weren't for money, we wouldn't all of the luxurious things we have today. The world probably wouldn't industrialize without money. No technology, no production. We wouldn't advance. I can see your point on weapons though.
I'm only about 11 years late, the wonders of being homeless puts life very much on hold. Gotye is simply an amazing artist, I love his music already and I've only heard 2 tracks so far! One of the best, heart wrenching, and most under appreciated songs/video
Now we're just somebody that the earth used to know
FartFights puns puns!

Exactly
Love it. I think it's true of all the arts.
i saw the 'how this song came to existence' and goyte said what inspired him was that he had a beautiful garden owned by his parents and he was afraid of losing it
"a friend of mine" Sure.
altheathepirate
Lol you know what's up, apparently.
This feels a bit relevant for today's times...

It's crazy how this is nostalgic now lol. Feels like yesterday this song came out.
This song just keeps getting more relevant as the years go on.
This kinda good song still sounds good even after 6 years later.
+유재혁 good songs sound good after decades man :)
+유재혁 agree. but nothing changed even after 6 years later. our planet is almost dead( we are stupid creatures

"And the saddest thing-

That lyrics sound like a reality in this world:(
ok, I've watched this like 10 times and I'm literally craving listening to the song? wtf is going on????
The world had been destroyed by war, global warming, etc and now the last remaining are journeying just to find water but they only get dirt when they pull up their buckets. At least that's what I'm getting...

i started knowing i was a weird kid when i tried to show my middle school friends the kind of music i liked and his music videos- they would make fun of me after i tried to show them. not that the videos are that weird, but for some reason this is what really triggered my idea that i was strange. coming back to this after i graduated highschool alone is really bringing things to light for me. i was weird, i am weird, and i'm gonna be weird. but being alone is good company, at least. i'm so much older now, but i think i'm just the same weird little kid. i miss gotye.
I'm a millenial and I feel like high school was just yesterday.
lets be weird together
None of my friends understood my choice in music such as these, but in the end being weird is more unique than being like everyone. I've come to appreciate that and I'm still in highschool.
he'll come back. trust
No one is normal. Enjoy what You like and forget the rest.
I seem to be stuck on Eyes Wide Open. It feels like the perfect song for America today. We all seem to be walking the plank with our eyes wide open.
We're screwed, aren't we? 🥲
Yes, I am afraid we are but maybe there is a few of us left to hope for a better future.
@michelemartin1130 I'm one of those few. I'm with y'all.
List of favorites- :)
1. "Eyes Wide Open"
2. "Bronte"
3. "Save Me"
4. "Hearts A Mess"
5. "Dig Your Own Hole"

By your reasoning, I could just read the lyrics and get the same effect as listening to it
Not really the musical instruments also have the mood effect. Music was meant for the reason to connect with it wasn't always for entertainment.
Erik P All music tells a story, whether you realize it or not. This song is just pushing people to try and understand it's story.
The song is also very well done, with Gotye's lyrical prowess showing with every word he sings. Overall, it's very enjoyable, especially when paired with the video.
he said “only a few ever worried, while the signs were clear they had no idea”
felt that. not many people seem to consciously acknowledge that we are headed for disaster.
Say it before, say it again... song is way underrated. This is my favourite Gotye song.
it has 20 million views, how is that underrated
afaultytoaster comparing to Somebody that i used to know, its underrated.

The more i listen to his music the more i think HOW DF DID "I USE TO KNOW" WIN A GRAMMY???? BUT ALL THESE SONGS DIDNT IF THATS THE STANDARD
+How Sway the whole album is not that good sadly, but man, this is very good song for nowadays standards.
Gaming 10s apparently not... It got outbeat by a less significant song
STAND UP TO THE PEOPLE STILL LISTENING TO THIS IN 2021!👏🙌
I feel like crying when I listen to this song.. I'm about to see the crisis nurse
I should just quit trying to feel better and live in this world of misery
I do too! especially when I have listen to it a few times in a row.......
ive already cried hard to this song glad I'm not the only one. one love
Such a powerful statement. But it's like to stop consuming is to stop being human; and why would I make a change if you wont. Realize you as an individual can make a change; don't wait for others to change before you.
Sometimes, others will follow. :)

This was his best song BY far, i was stunned that this was not his "defining work", "Someone i used to know", is an ok track for sure, but this utterly brilliant, so "Wally", just consider a little remaster and properly re release this, push it on youtube, then id make a custom vinly as well, this track is worthy of it
This song is deeper than anyone imagines . He's literally talking about society and the way we all think as a human race
I am pretty sure we all know what the song is about.
Where he is? He is iconic. I love his songs. I'm here 2024

This song is actually terrifying,
but I deeply love this masterpiece so much... so many years later and I still can never get enough of his beautiful music and even the backstory it has.
this video was my first ever existential crisis
A true artist in every sense of the word... ART AT IT'S FINEST!!!!
I believe that it is not important to Gotye how many people his art reaches... but rather, how his art impacts even one heart and soul.
Thank you Wally, collaborators and crew for ALL the hard work and the resulting beauty that you put out into this troubled world!!!! The Karma will run over the dogma!!!!

"why would I make a change if you won't" is so spot on. I only recently stopped using that excuse.
All these people say how the lyrics are relevant now.
They were always relavent. You just didn't see it yet
- just my two cents. haha
Look into the making of this song, it's very interesting!!!! There's an 8 min video about it on this channel!!
A true artist that not a lot of people appreciate
I remember my dad would play this song and I found it annoying at the time but now I always listen to this song and it reminds me of him I wish we had the same bond like we use to
I'm sorry you feel like this man. I hope you reconcile with how things are now.
Get it back. Put yourself out there. I did but I wish I had done it earlier. He is gone now but we rebounded stronger than ever and I am so glad that we did. No Regrets, if you know what I mean. Do it.
Never a one hit wonder, just a one time legend. We love you gotye
When I was a kid I thought this music video was so weird now it makes so much sense.
I was listening to this song at 13 years old. It hurt then, knowing what i would be dealing with as an adult. I'm 25 now and it hurts more than ever.
We’re *all* in the same boat, staying afloat *for the moment*
I think the best lyrics are the ones that seem to roll like a tide, in and out or high and low, yet, themata is always present.
I remember finding this song after hearing Somebody I Used to Know and honestly loving this song way more than that one, because of the soundscapes and lyrics and Gotye’s melodies are just hypnotic!
1:36 "some people offered us bath-salts."

I hear "Some people offered up answers. We made off like we heard, they were only words. They didn't add up, to a change in the way we were living. And the saddest thing, is all of this could have been avoided."

"But it was like to stop consumings to stop being human'" is one of the best lyrics i reckon ive ever heard.

This album keeps on saving me
I remember finding this right after it came out as a young man. This song just gets more impactful the more things keep going.
Imagine if money and weapons and stupidity had never existed... This song always makes me imagine that world for some reason.
Dont forget religion
Im religious, but if the world could just look over personal religion it would have the same effect.
steelrain64 humanity could have all the technology in the world to end world hunger and cancer for ever and we would still be killing each other because of our natural greed and hatred for others who seem different or are better or lesser then us, and the sooner we/you/(obama
steelrain64
If people didn't have weapons, they would kill each other with their bare hands.
