  • The winter months offer a new set of fruits to us, and persimmons are delectable, calorie dense fruits that I use as a staple food in the colder months. There are many varieties of persimmon, each with its own unique taste, but there are some common qualities relevant to selection that I will share with you in this video. I'll cover the 3 main types of persimmon, Fuyu, Hachiya, and American, and how to know exactly when the persimmon is ripe. Some recipe suggestions and my preferred method for eating persimmon are also shared.

You are wonderfully vibrant. I love your energy. I really want to transition into veganism, I have a almost 2 year old who is great eater and never EVER cared for meat products, I'm nervous about her getting enough to calorie intake, though she is still nursing and I don't plan to stop anytime soon and I'm sure she eat enough to keep herself healthy. Anyway, great video! Where are you from if you don't mind me asking. You seem to have an abundance of fruits available all the time. My husband and I are thinking of moving to a tropical environment because of the sun and the food more readily available.

the wild SE usa persimmon are astringent. gather after 1st frost, only when soft, wrinkly w/ its skin almost splitting..even when ripe the skin is still astringent.

As far as I know, Native aka American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) always Astringent and you can never eat them unless they are extremely ripe (like the ooey gooey Hachiya he was enjoying ). Or maybe he was just trying to pull a prank like his 'produce department' working days ;-)

agreed !! you need to wait until after the 1st frost and then some..i gather the fell ones under the tree after a windy fall/winter day & then give the tree a shake..i peel, de-seed and make fruit leather or persimmon pudding =P

The ones we have here stay bitter until they're exposed to a heavy frost.

How do you know when they turn bad? Is it just me or where I live that if I wait until very soft like in your video they start to have a fishy smell.

At 1:28 you made a mistake. Native American is very astringent and puckers you til after frost and very soft. Diospyros Virginianus. I guess you were pulling your prank again. lol

What do they taste like? And if you don't mind me asking where are they mainly grown? (Asking from CT)

Noooooo, I tried a Fuyu persimmon that seemed ripe enough, but it was very furry/chalky. They can be a disaster to eat too if they're not properly soft.

I'm used to fuyu but tried a hachiya. Oh my goodness was it was awful. I guess it wasn't ripe. My tongue felt "furry."

This would be better entitled "How to tell when a persimmon's ripe". Video didn't show "how to pick" them at all. Thanks though, great video!
