Ra Ra Rasputin - Brass Quintet

  • Because why shouldn't a brass quintet play Euro Disco?!
A high energy hit in 1978 by German pop/disco group, Boney M. The song tells the sensationalised tale of Grigori Rasputin, friend and advisor of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and his family during the early 20th century. The song describes Rasputin as a playboy, mystical healer, and political manipulator.
Arr Maeve Lander. Score at musescore.com/maevelander/ra-...
Brass groups, I'd suggest to perform this one with commitment! High energy, excitement, dancing (definitely not sitting), and don't forget to encourage your audience to join you in a bit of shouting!
Instrumentation: 2 trumpets, flugelhorn, trombone and tuba. In the video I play the tuba part on my flugel down two octaves.

I had no idea that Rasputin was going to greet me this morning, but here we are. I think you have created a cult-classic. What great fun! Loved the chest-thumping, knee-slapping, foot-stomping, & hand-clapping at the beginning. I think the New Zealanders have had their influence. The arranging is top-notch, the playing and production values are always good, but the energy is what really sells this. Thank you for a great start to my day!

In part very obviously an old Ottoman song known as 'Kâtibim' or 'Üsküdar'a gideriken' dating back to the 19th century, possibly earlier. It remains popular throughout the Balkans and further afield. Your grandmother used to sing it to us when we were kids. I have no idea where she learnt it, possibly through the 1953 recording of it as 'Uska dara', by Eartha Kitt. There's a nice instrumental performance of it here ruclips.net/video/r9No8kVSXqQ/видео.html The words in Turkish and English can be found there en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kâtibim with lots more information.
