I'm a software engineer by day, trumpeter by night! This channel is a place for me to indulge my brass addiction.
Not being a professional musician, it has been a great way to challenge myself musically. Making these videos encourages me to finish the arrangements I start, and it keeps me playing regularly, especially on secondary instruments like flugel and trombone. Music is such a central part of my life - I love being able to share and collaborate with others online who love brass music as much as I do.

The House of Eliott - Brass Quintet
Theme music from the BBC's "The House of Eliott" (1991) composed by Jim Parker (one of my all time favourite film score composers) and arranged here for brass quintet by me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this TV show, and found both the story and the music inspiring! The plot follows two sisters in 1920s London. When their father dies suddenly, they're left without any education, and are forced to sell the family home to cover their father's debts. But they refuse to be cowed, and apply courage, entrepreneurship and a lot of hard work, to establish a dressmaking business, which they eventually build into their own haute couture fashion house. This is such a beautiful arrangement and you play it so well! It doesn't seem like Bob's arrangements are available on musescore any more. Do you know if there's any other way to purchase them?

Haha, Excellent Maeve! Really like the piece. I actually performed this at a festival earlier in the year, just me on Eb horn (Imperial like yours) with a pianist and we played it pretty much straight from the book - you have put in a lot of extra work and made much more of it, you win! Well done.
Thanks Steve! Actually, I had to return the lovely old Imperial to the local brass band. 😭 This is the first recording that features a different Horn. It was mysteriously mailed to me from Germany, and is an antique Courtois. One of the first ever produced, if I'm reading the serial number right. It's nice to play and in remarkably good condition for it's age. But the sound is much more gentle, almost flugel-esk. Curious your thoughts?
Hi Maeve, crikey I didn't even notice, I was enjoying the arrangement too much! Honestly I can't tell if the new horn sounds any different in the mix. I think my Imperial has a gentle sound, not quite flugely but not harsh at all like a trumpet or trombone. And good enough for my level. So if the courtois is another step in that direction I think that's good. I also have an old Boosey & Co (1927) which has a very soft tone - but out of tune since converted to modern low pitch so not much use.

I am marveled with your talent. Isn’t wonderful we have such great technology that you could do this. I did this very crudely back in the sixties using 2 reel to reel tape recorders back in the 1960’s with my trumpet, alto sax, tenor banjo & accordion. Thank you for bringing back memories and the work it took to make this wonderful video.
