shame isn't a bad thing. Its a tool, to my knowledge, used to help society. It's a bad thing the only shameful thing nowadays is to shame someone else. Not all behaviors, actions, habits, or beliefs are good or should be done and being social creatures some of us won't change those without society doing something like shaming us for it. We don't like the shame and embarrassment from our community so we go and change said behavior hopefully for a more healthy behavior or habit that is more accepted amongst our peers and community.

Personally I think it can just be the phone itself and not even social media. I deleted socials, all of them, and found myself scrolling on news sites, the weather, music, my notes, pictures, etc. As soon as I deleted a problem app I’d have another problem app without even realizing until I checked my weekly screentime. Worst part is, I’m very antisocial. I don’t respond to texts, emails, calls, for near weeks at a time. I just, get stuck in the comfort of doing nothing. Phone addiction is something that for people like me, a very serious problem that can only be fixed by completely removing the phone. Unfortunately that causes issues like not being able to bank, check in at the gym, clock in at work, etc. They’re just everything nowadays. I wish that employers and other people were more open to those who want to use flip phones but that’s just not an option for me. Hopefully with the help of therapy and treating some of my other mental health issues, my phone addiction will improve but damn, it is an awful thing humanity has created.

You can do it! I believe in you! Now don't reply to my comment and go do something that makes you happy. 😌
All jokes aside, you aren't at fault for being addicted. Many apps were literally designed to be addictive, a lot of the content on them - to be addictive especially to children. You shouldn't be blaming yourself, but instead the makers of the content & apps who are even willing to stoop so low to target kids. They designed the apps to have this effect on you, you weren't "weak" or "stupid" to get addicted to them. Most people would get addicted. Maybe the only ones that wouldn't are old people who aren't willing to use phones. But even then I know elderly people who use phones a lot.
So you shouldn't be blaming yourself, but instead you should be the one to help yourself get rid of that addiction. As I said earlier, I know you can do it and I believe in you! It might take time, but do it to make yourself happier.

I always find myself opening my phone and either forgetting what I was supposed to do or getting distracted just like the spotify example you gave lol. Using a commonplace notebook helped me a lot because there's nothing that could possibly distract me if all I needed to do is capture a thought or list something down. I don't have many online friends (2) , I have more rl friends and I'm proud of that. But still hearing how one of my friend is on her phone for only 1 hour a day makes me think if I should try that too. And I will. I want to. I want to make my dreams come true. I only played them in my head and I always said to my self "I'm going to start tomorrow" and did I do it ? No. I was on social media. I want to change that. I have a love for books and I have soooo many that I want to read but I always get distracted by my phone. I want to make my dreams come true. I want to be proud of myself and even (maybe) cure my problems! Cause also because of social media I had to fight through some deep depression last year that I luckily managed to control a little bit.

the addiction is really hard to overcome. i have stopped all social media usage for a little over 3 weeks now i still check my DMs once every week so i don’t accidentally ignore my friends that i can’t contact elsewhere. i’m pretty happy with my self control so far, i don’t feel any « withdrawal » symptoms or urges to check tiktok even tho i have it on my phone. unfortunately i think i may have compensated with youtube…i’m pretty sure the time i spend on yt skyrocketed since i like listening to videos as background noise. it’d be good if there was a platform with random documentaries or just gibberish that sounds like a very boring presentation just so i can focus on my tasks while still feeling like i’m procrastinating
i found that reading books helped me regulate my sleep schedule a lot better…it depends on the book but the physical aspect of holding a book, no matter how interesting it is, will always get me tired from holding it, changing positions so i can be comfortable, adapting to the dim light in my room etc so 100% of the time i’ll end up sleeping earlier than i would’ve if i was using my phone
to anyone struggling with the addiction, good luck! you can start by reducing your screen time every day or try finding something more interesting. try not using it outside or while in the public transport, it do be boring sometimes but being bored isn’t a bad thing and far from abnormal, being overstimulated and constantly producing dopamine on the other hand is what’s abnormal.
i’m not gonna lie, it IS hard but the more you resist it the easier it gets.

But, I then spend too much time ‘consuming’ and not creating and doing. Sometimes it’s easier to live our lives through others… watching through screens and not ‘experiencing’ life. I really want to get better at lowering my screen time. Good luck to everyone trying this too 💜

I am 13 and I have horrible social media addiction. For many months I didn't even realise it!! I was just doing everything my friends, cousins, people around my age were doing.
But at some point I saw these habits changing me into the worse side. I was always doing all my homework and even more. Now I usualy try to do it but one or two asignments are still left unfinished. My room was always clean. Now it's messy almost all the time. I had perfect routine: some calming music is playing in the background, I'm cleaning mess that formed during the day. After that I read and went to bed. Now I would go to sleep at about 1 in the morning!! My grades became much lower.
And than I became friends with one girl who never had a phone. Her parents will get her one than she will attend university. And I saw how bright she was. That she was actually real. How she absolutely adored books!!
And now I see that something must change. Thank you so much, have a great day!!

My problem with quitting my addiction to things like social media and pinterest and even spotify that it's not always useless content, all of it is chosen by me so its mostly good or useful. Quality memes, interesting or informative articles (mostly) and good art and music, but the apps are designed in a way they make you consume these in the most shallow way possible for countless hours, even when you don't enjoy it, until you get tired of whole artforms and get depressed. And a compilation of your favourite content is definitely not more important than doing creative things and getting inspiration from that, reading books or socializing.
The solution would be installing separate apps for reading news and articles. And also the intent thing and putting books to places are really good ways of beating the addiction. Before having a phone, as a child I used to read the textbooks in random places the same way I read internet content now, we could have way less mental problems like depression and more educated people by simply putting books into peoples hands lol.

Agree mostly, but please be aware ADHD is not a mental problem, it's a cognitive difference, and is not caused by a lack of reading - it's mostly genetic. In fact, I and others I know with ADHD are the biggest readers I know, and always have been. This attitude is not helpful.

Those concerns you had with losing valuable and good content is something I worried about as well. I decided to delete the majority of my social media apps, except RUclips. I worried that I would be missing out on important political news via instagram and Twitter, and I am. But for me, the cost of addiction outweighed the benefit of information. I’ve chosen to get my news from less addictive sources, even though I know I have sacrificed the ability to get news specific to my area and causes I care about. Instead I’m focusing on my studies. I get a lot of information that way.

Guys we have to realise that social media is like that ex toxic lover who we have to get rid of but couldn't becuz we loved that toxic person so much. We know about that he or she is a toxic person when they physically and mentally hurt us very badly but still stick to him or her like they are the one and only last person and hope of love on earth and break up only after we are completely broken. So if we don't get rid of our addiction we are definitely going to be that brokiest brokey on earth in future and regret everything we are doing now. So recently I deleted my social media accounts. Trust me I feel very like some burnden had been lifted up from my chest. Before that I used to scroll phone all day and that made me depressed cuz I wasn't able to focus on anything. Though I had time i felt like i didn't have any time. But now I do so much things in just one hour I couldn't spend time on my hobbies. My attention span and concentration were affected very badly. And also I had FOMO so it was difficult to delete social media accounts. But when I felt depressed i decided to delete and deactivated my accounts immediately.. i felt very good after doing that. I don't feel like I miss some trends or jokes on those platforms. But still I need time to heal my attention span and concentration levels now. It's very boring ofc. But as a book lover replaced book in place of phone. And also i started focusing on my hobbies. Still I feel like something is missing. But still Im trying to heal myself from this addiction. But social media is something that i definitely won't be active for the next few years until I achieve my dreams.

To those who took time and read my comment. An advice if you are new to reading books. Start a book which is a love story or comedy genere. That what you can fall in love with books and make them your best friend.

Thank you for this video. In 2021, I deleted all my social media apps and didn't use them for almost a week because my mental health was getting bad from all the hate I see on the internet. I can honestly say that I felt so much happier at the end of the week and I was much more productive. I hope that I can learn to limit my meaningless screen-time and scrolling on my phone again. My current daily average is nearly 8 hours, I would love to reduce to at least 5 hours.

The reason why I use my phone a lot is because everything is in it. My calendar, my notes, my reminders, my tasks, and etc are on it. Even my money managing, Quran and prayer times are in it. I use it as a productivity machine. And I constantly try to find new apps to improve my productivity.

It's strange but sometimes I'm doing meaningful meaningfulness scrolling. Like I'm giving myself this pleasure of just doing nothing but learning new things random and getting inspired

One of my goal is to reduce the content I consume. I can't avoid social medias 100% because I really do enjoy them but I want to consume less and make more. So instead of just scrolling mindlessly, I want to focus on my creativity and provide content. I feel like, this way, I can still be part of social medias but in a more proactive way and lessen the amount of time I spend just scrolling. Let see where this takes me :)
