our attention spans aren't decreasing; what's actually happening is that the world around us has gotten terrifyingly good at hijacking our attention. There's actually no study that indicates our attention span is worsening - a bunch of articles all hinting at a microsoft study that only had a figure of it that isn't related to the findings of the study. Our attention spans are just as good as they have always been; we can still read books as long as we enjoy them, we can still watch movies, we can still game for hours on end or focus on any enjoyable activity for a long period of time. It's more of a serotonin baseline decrease (if I were to hypothesize) from the constant bombardment of dopaminergic hormones and the overwhelming amount of information we absorb throughout our daily lives (we can try cutting off social media and such, but that's not an addiction, but rather a coping mechanism to deal with this lower serotonin baseline and the decay of our social lives since 2020 hasn't made that any easier.). TLDR; attention spans aren't decreasing, nothing wrong with us; it's our overstimulating environments as you correctly state in the video :)
I’ve deleted Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat , Tiktok, Twitter, Reddit, and discord. All I have left is RUclips now. I have RUclips to watch videos like this and to find music. I feel much more free and focused on my self improvement journey. Thank you for making this Ruri!

I already use the "do not disturb" mode on my phone from 9 a.m to 5 p.m, it is so freaking good and useful. Sometimes, when I'm taking some break I use my phone for 5-10 minutes. Doing that has made me more productive and I can focus more on what I'm doing. Great video. Everyone needs to know this information. I fully believe we are living in a procastinating and overstimulated society, world. I appreciate a lot your video. Suddenly your video appeared on my RUclips recomendations, so this is my first time watching your channel. Love your content. xoxo
thank you for making this, every single video i've seen about the dopamine addiction from social media just says to stop using it entirely which would mean I wouldnt be abe to contact my friends and family abroad. learning how to healthily use social media is so much more helpful since its ingrained into our culture now.
I remember switching from Facebook to FB Lite and it definitely stopped me from addiction, now I rarely even use it I even stopped checking out YT notifications as a daily routine in my main account like I used to, now I'm able to sleep on time consistently. Social Medias are really driving people crazy, it's like a virtual drug.

I decided instead of consuming content try to create content by my own. I turned off my notifications about 2 years ago and haven’t turn it on yet🙈 Also during my relaxing time I go for a walk or I just meditate. This new approach is really helpful for me.
We absolutely appreciate all the strategies that you gave us in this video, Ruri! Even though I've been implementing some of them in my life for the purpose of getting out of my comfort zone and finally enhance my productivity significantly, one of the most valuable and interesting insights that I have never tried out previously is reading ficcional books at night, largely before sleep. That's because I authentically used to have trouble with sleeping too late, almost midnight, just because I would constantly waste over an hour on social media, which impacts not only our quality of sleep, but also our health at all negatively in the long-term. Neverhtless, when I started incorporating this tip in reading ficcional books a few minutes before actually going to bed, I've realized a signficant improvement in my quality of sleep and all my health. It definitely helped me to end up the day by feeling happy and much less anxiously, especially if the book don't have a sad and terrible end in addition to owning an easy and simple language to understand. I've recently tried it out by reading "Wonder" and it worked perfectly to me. So thanks a bunch for the tip, Ruri. I'm sure it'll also work to everybody else who watch your channel.

There was a point during lockdown when I started noticing that I was spending so much more time on social media, achieving nothing, and feeling unsatisfied, bored, listless and definitely losing physical fitness. I had to go back to [my] basics: screen time for news and emails, and movies late in the day; position guitar, books, magazines nearby bc they're my dopamine/satisfaction hits; walk twice a day. My work was really smart too - we were given 3 "must do" tasks: check in every day, talk to others about resilience, hit output deadlines. Managers didn't want to be looking over our shoulders, checking if we were spending 8 hours a day on task, just that we were engaged, communicating and managing time. That meant taking responsibility for our screen time. It was the simplest of frameworks but had a huge impact.
Also for iphone users @ 3:52 you can add a greyscale/monochrome filter on your phone by going to: Settings>Accessibility>Display & Text Size>Color Filters and turn on color filters
I got rid of social media over the course of the last two years, last one was Instagram which I'm not using anymore since last weekend. I still work with social media everyday because I'm an editor and social media manager, but that's completely different as I'm only creating and not mindlessly and passively consuming. Have to say I'm feeling so much better without being interrupted by social media 20 times a day, I got more time to focus on important things like getting enough sleep and eating healthy. Over all I'm much more satisfied with my life without social media.
Both my girlfriend and I uninstalled EVERY social media app, save for WhatsApp, RUclips and Pinterest. No more Instagram, Reddit, Twitter, Tumblr or Facebook. We live so much better now without those apps! We stopped giving a shit about what others think, post, worry about and shitposts. I am so much more relaxed, I stopped wasting so much time and the overall experience is undoubtfully positive.
Really proud of your progress over the months, the video production on your videos has increased tremendously. Props to your editor. (As one editor to another) Thank you for this upload! Excellent video! I did my own challenge sometime ago where I walked away from social media for about a month and I noticed how often I was fiddling with my phone for no reason except out of habit. It felt strange when I returned but I had found a new level of self-awareness of how addicting social media can be.
Fortunately, I put my social media on hold for almost 1 year, but there are some benefits, right. I never felt like I was in the wrong place since watching your videos constantly. Slowly but surely I got to know you and I can really relate to you because you are similar to me in a lof of cases. My biggest enemy though the RUclips Shorts, they are killing me before going to bed. Keep motivating! I like when I'm hearing from you.
Thank you for this video. I've had my notifications turned off for a while now, however after watching this I've now started a 5 day social media detox and deleted FB and IG from my phone. subscribed :)
I still play video games, and I totally agree with this. Overstimulating myself with cheap dopamine always gives me guilt and the thought at the back of my head that I should be doing something that will make me who I want to become in life. Thank you for this. ♥
I did this many years ago and saw my professional career skyrocket. Droped off most of social media besides Instagram and Linkedin(in which I barely use it today), and I dont use the apps in the smartphone anymore, only in my desktop. The only mobile social app I have installed and with muted notifications is instant message.
This video gave us tools, methods, scientific rigor based evidence, audio and visuals. Although I would have to look into the test environment and control groups myself. This was interesting. I also would imagine that the classical conditioning of picking up your phone during a task would represent a lapse in concentration which is caused by the proximity of the phone right next to the user. I learned from this video. Thanks Ruri!
Making money on social media still depends on the people who are trapped in the loop. The more people scrolling, liking, sharing, the more you gain. So if everypne actually took that advice then there wouldn't be a job online.
What a hypocrisy You wouldn't have earned those six-figure sums if it weren't for the very people who abuse social media, who are constantly commenting, liking and sharing your content.
Thanks so much for the video, while I just uninstalled instagram, i started using the don’t disturb mode and screen time so I could remind how much I’ve used an app, this video is going to help me in so many ways, huge thanks and keep the great job

My ADHD makes it challenging for me even with medication, so I've been replacing games with educational content. I have still been struggling but it's helped limit and convert my entertainment into knowledge
Especially when you're addicted to gaming, the stimulation is on another level. I've studied a lot of things about its effects on the brain and it's a real danger for it.
At first I always think social media as for entertainment and fame. But social media is also a powerful tool to learn and discover to improve ourselves, that's why i always choose to follow on social media that shares meaningful contents that help us grow to be better each day.

@@DoomKid But having a fitter body or knowing more stuff doesn't mean anything or do anything. It's just about making choices to fill time with what is valuable or pleasurable to yourself. @@someonesomeone25 How does that not mean anything lol being fit means being more healthy, active, physically capable. knowing more stuff means being more knowledgeable, smarter, and will get you farther in potential career choices.

i feel like one reason i use my phone a lot is that it’s basically “free” entertainment constantly available at my fingertips- i can play games, socialize, watch media. whereas if i was out and about i’d have to pay for everything i want or want to do. like transportation, an activity etc. luckily walks and nature is most times free!
I love Ruri❤. Thank you for always bringing insights, giving such amazing and useful advice. I've cut down on my social media time a whole lot. I wasn't able to enjoy the video. There wasn't enough simultaneous subway surfers gameplay and family guy clips with large captions to keep me occupied. sorry :/ (for the humour illiterate, the joke is that the video isn't stimulating enough because it doesn't have the overstimulating aspects of tktok videos)
I also noticed journaling helps and going to the gym or doing yoga/meditating. Personally, for me, the gym helped a lot to kick the addiction! Now I’m addicted to working out 😂
How can you even promote your instagram in your bio while having such a negative eye on social media? Ofc it´s a financial source for you right? so why not, but isnt that extremely contradictional? Wanting people to focus more on themselves while posting like every other instagram influencer their perfect world? What sets you apart from them? Just wondering because there are actually youtubers who are very anti on social media, having the same opinions like you while actually not having it and not promoting it. Being negative on social media these days espcially among young people who spend their whole day on it, really became a trend right? Also good money income i guess. xD It´s actually insane. Just wondering how much there is actually true. Just wanted to give my opinion, have a nice day! :)
The ironic thing about her talking about making 6 figures thanks to social media is that that very income DEPENDS on her audience being overstimulated and addicted. Otherwise there would not be nearly enough people tuning into her content for her to make that much. This video is the perfect example: she’s not saying anything even remotely groundbreaking, it’s all stuff we already know, but she wants us to keep watching so she can get her precious 6 figure paycheck 🙄
Exactly what I'm trying to say. Can't people see that this person is just trying to promote an app or that minimalist phone? Ugh its very frustrating. People need to figure it out themselves. Find a hobby and monitor your screen time. Meanwhile... shes doing the same shit she tells her audience not to do.
I can’t believe you’ve made 6 figures with your social media activity. Let’s be brutally honest here. You are not providing any new information, you are not offering any significant skills, you are just a copy of many others out there, spreading the same information, doing the same thing. No added value whatsoever, and in many cases, spreading misinformation. It’s mind blowing how nowadays any kid with a camera and wifi makes a living and earns more than any skilled, educated and experienced worker. Not even doctors make this money. The world is going straight into a massive crisis. It’s disgusting.
@@ruriohama What do my personal preferences have anything to do with the facts that I pointed out before? It does not matter what I want to do. All I’m saying is that nowadays unskilled and unexperienced young people make more money than those with years of training working in difficult jobs. Like it or not, it’s mind blowing. Isn’t it? No offences here. Just being honest.

That's how I've been for 9 years haha it's nice to not be burdened with all the mind clutter from all of those other sites
Ruri, your way of communicating these elaborate ideas is very effective and you always reach the main point of what you’re saying in a clean way, so that we can understand better the argument. Really, your videos are amazing. Keep doing this, you’re teaching us so many important things that I’m actually applying to my everyday life, it’s incredible. Just wanted to let you know that you’re doing a great job
Thank you for reminding me that i have a "focus mode" and "bedtime mode" in my phone that I was stupid enough to not use xD
I'm really grateful for your informative and life-saving content, please keep it up. Gonna take a while before I feel okay avoiding social media but I really need to since I'm addicted. Gonna start mindfulness! ♥
Consistency is back❤️ Now I am preparing for med school finals and I decided to challenge myself and cut down the content I consume. I decided instead of consuming content try to create content by my own. I turned off my notifications about 2 years ago and haven’t turn it on yet🙈 Also during my relaxing time I go for a walk or I just meditate. This new approach is really helpful for me.
Please Tell Me How Be Like That 🥺 Means How Can You Control Yourself Like That Because I Didn't Control Myself 😭

This video makes me realize that I really need to do a digital detox, and I'm sure that your tips will help me a lot. I love your content!❤
I'm sure it'll also work to everybody else who watch your channel.
ruri, I'm really glad I've found your channel since 2019, tysm for all the content you give us. I hope you keep doing things positively

This video really resonated with me. I unsubscribed to reduce my social media consumption. Thanks!
Thank you for encouraging us to unsubscribe under the right conditions. I really don't know how I crossed your videos but you drew me in quite quick a while ago. While not all your videos strike the cord with me, most initially did. I'm glad you're bringing this awareness to others.
"When we are constantly interrupted, it takes us longer to complete tasks" ~ Ruri,
Mindblowing content
Wow she really hit the needle in the 5 day, thank you very much for your work, info and content chica, be safe 👊🏻
I was neglecting my life bad!!!
I wasn't realising this
But now I discovered some things
Thanks for making this❤
Also for iphone users @ 3:52 you can add a greyscale/monochrome filter on your phone by going to:

and turn on color filters
This was a wonderful video, Ruri. As usual. Well explained, succinct and helpful. Truly one of the best content creators. Thank you!
Always enjoying your content Ruri !! You give ppl the chance to change if they want (it always comes down to the will)
The video is already uploaded. Thank you RURI.
Ruri San it's so Good to see you. 🤗
I swear youtube just loves recommending me your videos. I watched the video youtube, please stop recommending it to me.
Really proud of your progress over the months, the video production on your videos has increased tremendously. Props to your editor. (As one editor to another)
Thank you for this upload! Really insightful stuff, would be nice if you could tackle on the "The Fear of Missing Out'.
It'd be really helpful for people to disconnect from social media in a more healthy way without FOMO imo. Keep up the great work Ruri!
Excellent video! I did my own challenge sometime ago where I walked away from social media for about a month and I noticed how often I was fiddling with my phone for no reason except out of habit. It felt strange when I returned but I had found a new level of self-awareness of how addicting social media can be.
With quitting social media I was capable of running my professional and artistic life and now i struggle to come back 💀

I like when I'm hearing from you.

i deactivated my facebook and instagram a few weeks ago, only to find out that i replace that time lost with youtube shorts..

Thank you for this video. I've had my notifications turned off for a while now, however after watching this I've now started a 5 day social media detox and deleted FB and IG from my phone. subscribed :)
Actually i need such change in my life, i will give it a try, love ur content so much and thank u for focusing on making the world a better place
I wish I could turn off RUclips shorts. RUclips has traditionally been my safe space but yt shorts is taking all my long content patience awayyyyy 😢
I still play video games, and I totally agree with this. Overstimulating myself with cheap dopamine always gives me guilt and the thought at the back of my head that I should be doing something that will make me who I want to become in life. Thank you for this. ♥
Real. Sucks tho causei wanna go pro but i don't think I'm good enough and if I play too much I get too addicted anyways
I did this many years ago and saw my professional career skyrocket. Droped off most of social media besides Instagram and Linkedin(in which I barely use it today), and I dont use the apps in the smartphone anymore, only in my desktop. The only mobile social app I have installed and with muted notifications is instant message.
Ruri thank you, I can’t wait for when you hit 1M I will be there no matter what.
This is literally the best channel I have ever subscribed to. Every single video I've watched on your channel taught me something deep and meaningful

Making money on social media still depends on the people who are trapped in the loop. The more people scrolling, liking, sharing, the more you gain. So if everypne actually took that advice then there wouldn't be a job online.
You're like the Tony Robbins of social media motivation and therapy.
Ah, this was the reminder I needed. I stop working constantly just to check fb. I only do it for a minute or two, but I do it on and off all day
What a hypocrisy
You wouldn't have earned those six-figure sums if it weren't for the very people who abuse social media, who are constantly commenting, liking and sharing your content.
Thanks so much for the video, while I just uninstalled instagram, i started using the don’t disturb mode and screen time so I could remind how much I’ve used an app, this video is going to help me in so many ways, huge thanks and keep the great job
The reason I stay overstimulated is to keep the intrusive thoughts from winning. 😊
I use do not disturb all the time and for my free time, I focus on either drawing, reading, or video games.
I’m going into freelance work as an artist and content creator. I will use these tips mindfully.

Sadly kids these days using smartphones from a very young age. My first smartphone was in like 16-17 and it wasnt anything expensive, like 100-150 euros cheap one.
I was addicted to gaming when I was younger.. it was a disater for me. Idk if u struggle with it but if u do, keep it up man and good luck XD

If you are Catholic, creating the habit of praying the rosary helps a lot.
At first I always think social media as for entertainment and fame. But social media is also a powerful tool to learn and discover to improve ourselves, that's why i always choose to follow on social media that shares meaningful contents that help us grow to be better each day.
Whether you waste time on insta or YT, or the gym, or books, or a job, or films, or playing games, or whatever it's all basically the same.
Gym makes you fitter, books make you smarter. Sitting online all day playing games and watching TV will give you a lazy brain and fat body, so.. not the same
@@DoomKid But having a fitter body or knowing more stuff doesn't mean anything or do anything. It's just about making choices to fill time with what is valuable or pleasurable to yourself. Some people hate the gym. Some people hate reading. Etc. It's all just stuff to fill the gap between birth and death
@@someonesomeone25 How does that not mean anything lol being fit means being more healthy, active, physically capable. knowing more stuff means being more knowledgeable, smarter, and will get you farther in potential career choices.
@@gamerprince-tl5hg Which doesn't make you happier, or have intrinsic meaning, nor saves you from death.
@@someonesomeone25 Reading Books and going to the gym DOES MEAN SOMETHING AND CREATES GREAT CHANGES TO LIFE, books give you the knowledge and insights to create intrinsic meaning, exercise has immense positive effects on the brain and its thinking, which gives you the clarity and discipline to do things that add value to your life, you can hate reading or going to the gym but you cannot avoid the consequences of hating such important and mandatory activities, if you put mindless temporary pleasure over real value you will rot away being controlled by your short-term habits.

i feel like one reason i use my phone a lot is that it’s basically “free” entertainment constantly available at my fingertips- i can play games, socialize, watch media. whereas if i was out and about i’d have to pay for everything i want or want to do. like transportation, an activity etc. luckily walks and nature is most times free!
I love Ruri❤. Thank you for always bringing insights, giving such amazing and useful advice. I've cut down on my social media time a whole lot. Now I just need to take advantage of it and start creating content that I enjoy, start growing as a brand and start making some money. Always overthinking and end up procrastinating, I'm just afraid of failing after putting in the effort.
I wasn't able to enjoy the video. There wasn't enough simultaneous subway surfers gameplay and family guy clips with large captions to keep me occupied. sorry :/
(for the humour illiterate, the joke is that the video isn't stimulating enough because it doesn't have the overstimulating aspects of tktok videos)

@@dookie7299 I didn't even realise this. Thank you!❤ugh I feel so silly for not realising what she's tryning to do🙄

If you think it’s that easy, why aren’t you doing it?
@@ruriohama What do my personal preferences have anything to do with the facts that I pointed out before? It does not matter what I want to do. All I’m saying is that nowadays unskilled and unexperienced young people make more money than those with years of training working in difficult jobs. Like it or not, it’s mind blowing. Isn’t it?
No offences here. Just being honest.
