When I got my AOW cert they made me do a night dive as part of the course.
I had confidence in my instructor and their setup, but honestly I was dreading it because I was terrified of jumping in the ocean at night. I did the course on the first night of a 3 day liveaboard and I night dove every time after that first night because it was so awesome.
Night diving is a whole different experience the sea life seems to lose all fear of scuba divers at night.
Thanks for the show, Gus and thanks for the snot story, Woody.

I have always understood "blackwater" diving to mean zero visibility diving i.e. public safety etc. I was a PSD decades ago, and that term was used frequently, and even appears in PSD and underwater investigation textbooks. I was very surprised to encounter the term when I visited Kona Hawaii and did the offshore night dive that they call "blackwater". (Very cool dive, btw). In my experience, if you can tell the difference between having your eyes open or closed on the dive, you're not in blackwater. Merely dark is just low-vis.
That said, I thought I would share a trick you can use even in true blackwater to read your cylinder pressure: It requires having a full size analog SPG without a boot on it, but if you press the SPG to your faceplate in front of one eye, and then you take a light and press it to your faceplate in front of your other eye (which is closed so you aren't blinded), you can read the needle position on the gauge.

I tend to agree with the Dive talk guys on this one. Slang terms like blackwater can be confusing, as dark sea refers to deep sea here in Denmark (due to it being seemingly bottomless, and dark blue). Low visibility water is referred to as "muddy water" or "plow mud", if it is really bad as slang. From the air these areas also often appear brown or brownish green, hence the slang is close to the observed for a pilot or a boat captain.
We do not use the term blackwater diving for night dives, it is simply "night dives", but to be honest with you, most of the dives around here is below 6 ft visibility in the summer.

  • @chrisrichardson4899
    @chrisrichardson4899 3 месяца назад +5

zero viz diving such as PSD and commercial divers often do has been called blackwater (other common by those that do is "brail" diving) for decades, longer than I have been diving/teaching (81/94). But, yeah, have heard it called blackwater often. Lifeguard systems that have been teaching PSD since the 70's uses the term a lot. Here is a quote from their web "Public safety diving for the most part is done in low- or no-visibility blackwater, sometimes under harsh weather conditions, and often without advance notice. Even teams near beautiful, clear, ocean water may need to search in blackwater ponds, swamps, and rivers."
Blackwater as a term for photography has only really been a thing the last 15-20 years.
Certainly without context the two can be confusing as to what someone is talking about. That said, a bad brown out is not blackwater by the first definition. Think in cave the difference between a silt out and black out.
The blackwater photography dive is generally much more fun. 🙂

Not questioning the black water diving meaning, but from the fishing world, I have heard cedar water lakes refered to as black water, in florida they also call it tanic, it has a dark tea color to the water, maybe that is what the guy was talking about.

So I became a certified diver when I was 12 years old at a PADI certified dive shop in Roatan Honduras at West End Bay. Such beautiful water I have to say I really enjoyed the whole experience of getting my certification along with our dives. We did three dives my father and my brother and I with a dive instructor named Ignacio. my dad was already a certified diver long before my brother and I and this was going to be perhaps his 60th dive or so so he was long story short we were 65 feet below the surface and the instructor was in front of the three of us and I was in the back taking pictures and the next thing I know… I have no idea where they went and I see red in my mask It was the weirdest thing it was almost as if I had passed out underwater, but then I go ahead and surface and I just felt really lightheaded. I did not know that this was a common thing I felt like I had had a seizure, underwater or something I was so so scared.

This video reminds me of my last dive in Malaysia, 1 meter visibility and at around 12 meters deep suddenly felt like I was caught in some kind of line or seaweed, after a couple seconds the burning pain made it very obvious there was a jellyfish on my face. The jellyfish had gotten caught on my air cylinder and wrapped its tentacles around my face and neck. Three clinic visits and 10+ medicines later the swelling and welts finally went away.

One of the coolest night dives I did was golf coarse pond. That's where I discovered there's freshwater jellyfish and there were millions of them.
We had to go at night to collect golf balls and not interfere with golfers. You never knew if you were going to end up nose to nose with a big catfish, turtles or gators.
These were good clear water ponds connected to bigger lakes mostly so it didn't have the fertilizer issue many have but we still cleaned our gear completely rights after the dive just in case.

In germany they will treat you even if you only have an ID when it comes down to it. In spain they treated me and just sent me an invoice which I did sent to my health insurance and had to pay nothing. Sad to see that there are countries which would rather let you die in case you may be not able to pay... But I agree on your ad for this credit card, this should be possible anytime. There is always a way to people to pay afterwards or over some time, but if someone is in real danger it should not be about the money, money talk can follow. Another use for the term black water is water that is high in tanning's.
Please come from rotting leaves sticks tree trunks that have fallen into the water.
It gives the water a brown or almost black look, similar to tea.
As it takes time for the tannings to build up this only happens lakes, ponds, and many some slow streams.

Even night diving Isnt that bad for dark water/black water because the flashlight will light up as far as it can.
Actual black water I have been in absorbs all light 1ft below the surface. My 3000 lumen handheld light and 2 1000 lumen lights on my head could only get 6 inches of viz and the water was clear until I stirred up the silt looking for the drone.

Maybe, for arguments sake, he meant "Blackwater" in a geo/topographic sence. The place is named "Blackwater"... Like "Blackpool" etc.

Hello.. I am an active and frequent diver. I have been treated for external and middle ear infections in the last two years I was in Roatan, Honduras in February. The second day diving, rolled in, status quo. I was down about fifteen feet and couldn’t equalize my left ear. The pressure was horrible. Did the obvious thing, up and down several times. No deal. Suddenly, I experienced the worse vertigo. Got back on the boat. Nausea and vomiting. Called the dive. Next day same thing. Even on land. Had a cat scan : normal. This continues to happen. Do you know ANYONE. That
Specializes in diving maladies. You would think, Dartmouth in Vermont would have someone. Only EENT. I was just giving you information. If you know a specialist, I would be grateful

Diving at night isn't blackwater diving though. Thsts just a night dive lol. Blackwater refers to waters that are black or brown due to the tannins of surrounding vegetation regardless of time of day. That's why it's called blackwater, because the actual water itself is essentially 'black'.

I get these kinds of nosebleeds often, including when diving, freaks everyone else the heck out. Nothing major, just looks really dramatic.
