Hey guys! Brazilian subscriber here, the last video says, in a rought translation of course, something along the lines of: "diving with low/no visibility and tangled up is not for everyone", and it was recorded in a state called "Pará". Keep up with the great content/reactions!

For the second video, wrapping in fishing nets, safety divers nearby. And don’t cut of air. I think it’s ok to train. We dive in poor vis cleaning fish nets from wrecks. Getting entangled is easy. So better to train for it in a controlled environment.
But for sure that is is not for a standard rescue class.

Second video is actually the Brazilian Fire Brigade Rescue course for their rescue team (CMAut). Bear also in mind that in Brasil the Fire Brigade is a Military Branch, so this is actually a military training.
The corses change depending on the state. Some of those CMAut courses last 500 hours spread in 13 weeks.

Yea, i think gus and woody are looking at this wrong. I would agree that this would be inappropriate for a rescue course, but the military might have a reasoning for this training. Not sure what are their specific missions, and might be reasonable in their region and the tasks that they do. The fact that it is in a controlled environment with probably many instructors around them makes it a pretty safe exercise. The same way he closed the air he could open at any second.

I think an important factor of "do you step in or not" is to also take into consideration the following factors: time and stress. Depending on how you interact with people, you could also increase the chance of a possibly fatal accident. Confronting them takes time - time that they might be already short on because their air is running out. Especially when they are on the way out. And that's where the second factor stress comes into play. Stress through a confrontational situation elevates heartbeat and breathing rate. It also could lead to fight or flight reactions when they are feeling "found out" or something like this. In every case, the situation is getting more critical and dangerous than it already was.
So long story short: offering support or guidance or even a polite "what you do is not safe - please stop it" could make the situation less dangerous. But beeing too confrontational could lead to disaster.

    • @amyqotd5358
      @amyqotd5358 Год назад +5

Your comment reminds me of when my dad was supervising my driver's ed and a particular night drive along a curvy cliffside road...he was silent for the drive but when we got home said, "You need to work on spatial awareness - your right tires were at least an inch off the pavement edge in these places." I freaked out and asked why he hadn't said anything in the moment and his response was, "I thought you'd panic and overcorrect and then over correct again, sending us off the edge you were doing a good job of staying on".
There is a VERY solid argument to be made not to startle the horses in dangerous situations even when the person is doing something stupid and dangerous.
The second video is kinda wild but also how do you train people not to panic when panic is the correct response? Putting them in a " controlled " version of the scenario is pretty standard.

My 2 cents from Germany: I've actually heard of a similiar drill being done by an instructor during a SDI Solo Diver certification in the UK. Diving in the north and baltic sea, entanglement by ghost nets and fishing line is a real threat that can realistically happen to you. One might argue that cutting their air supply is too much, but I do think that it's better to experience something like entanglement for the first time in a relaitively safe training environment compared to the dark and cold open sea.

PS: That second video of people entangling themselves in net under water is in Brazil...apears to be some kind of training for rescue divers. "CMAUT do Pará" means "Curso de Mergulho Autônomo de Resgate" or "Recue Diving Course" of the Brazilian State of Pará. That being said, I seriously doubt they were even cavern certified based on what you could see in the video. I do feel like I got ripped off in my Rescue class though. You know how they put the danger signs inside the caves to warn divers of a possible death? I have an idea and maybe its dumb but it's just a thought.
Before I download a game on PC and spend that money, the developers will provide the "minimum requirements" list, so that I know whether or not I'm equipped enough to handle the game, before I buy it.
How about a professional "minimum requirements" sign outside of the cave, so that those who may not know all that they'll need for this particular cave/dive can reference it? Or maybe even just a simple a simple check-list/reminder?
I'm not a diver so I don't know but I feel something like that could only be helpful. Just some sort of a guide or... something.
    Can't hurt.

Every video on this channel feels like hanging out with two longtime friends. A few video ideas I’d personally _love_ to see you guys cover (with a trademark woody hat!!):
•• diving videos on people with physical disabilities- both with video reaction, and hopefully an interview with the person, who’ve either:
    adapted their diving (kits, style etc) to accommodate a new disability e.g amputation or;
Learned to first dive with a disability e.g person who is blind or paraplegic z
It’s such a freeing craft, the closest most of us will get to being astronauts in space, & I think that’s what attracts a lot of disabled people- the physical freedom & equality we don’t share when on ground.
•• if you haven’t already, interview Aussie former paratrooper & bomb disposal navy diver Paul de Gelder, who survived a 700pound bullshark attack in Sydney harbour, losing an arm and leg. He’s a phenomenally wonderful, successful man using his experience for so much good. And just a generally magnetic character!
•• I’d also love to see you do a video on the Aussie pearl divers off of Broome, Western Australia.
My uncle was one of these pearl divers, post 1960. So far as we know, Australian pearl diving started in the 1850’s, by our Indigenous Australians.
Historically they retrieved the pearl oysters by freediving. Later on, surface supplied diving helmet was used, & this is where barotrauma & decompression sickness was first sort of ‘discovered’ as if were
From Wikipedia. _But In order to find enough pearl oysters, free-divers were often forced to descend to depths of over 100 feet on a single breath, exposing them to the dangers of hostile creatures, waves, eye damage, and drowning, often as a result of shallow water blackout on resurfacing_ .
_ By the 1890s, pearling was the largest industry in the region, and had a huge impact on coastal Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander peoples_
_Because of the dangers of diving, almost no white people participated, and Asian, Pacific, and Indigenous Australians were used as cheap labor for the industry_
_Shells were the main aim for collection, and the whole industry was essentially a colonial one geared to procuring mother-of-pearl for sale to overseas markets for the making of buttons. As time went on and sources were depleted, divers were encouraged to dive deeper, making the enterprise even more dangerous_
_Divers experimented with the heavy diving suit, discarding the full diving suit and using the helmet and corselet only, which became standard practice until 1960. "Hookah" gear, tested to 48 fathoms (87 metres) in 1922, was considered unsuitable for the strong tides in these waters, and the later Scuba equipment did not supply enough air to spend the time required underwater and for decompression while surfacing_
Love your channel as always. Big love from down under

how physically demanding is this practice? could someone explain the general physical fitness requirements for the different types of diving? I am 40 with injuries and can no longer do BJJ. I took to riding a motorcycle for a few years after my last injury but it is not the same kind of stress relief i want. I have been watching your videos and have always been curiously excited about diving...But I dont want to waste my time to learn and invest if it is going to risk myself and others because of a bad shoulder and knee. I almost feel like cave diving would require less physical and more mental strength while lakes and oceans would require more physical than mental...i have this assumption based on things like your reactions to swimming techniques in the cave. I am just looking for a new passion that I wont have to give up on it. Your hobby seems to fit the bill. There is required knowledge, even with the knowledge there are challenges with real risks, there is specific methodology and techniques involved etc. all of that was true for BJJ, and the thinking through the challenge and whole process was like hitting the reset button on stress and anxiety and depression...everything was baseline or better every time it was over and I was always better for the experience. I want something like that again...any input anyone has on this? I live in NY just a short drive from Lake Erie and many other bodies of water that are unexciting generally speaking but that all post their own learning experiences to help me build up to a more conventional diving location...Like I could see me doing it, but I dont know how demanding it is on joints like a shoulder or knee as mine are not up to par with the normal person.

I don't think there should even be a question or "stigma" around stopping someone woefully under prepared entering a cave. I don't think it even has anything to do with "confrontation" , its COMMON SENSE. At least to me, like... That is heroic to stop and save them from themself. I would treat it like a burning building. You have all the fire gear, air tank, etc to enter a burning building are you going to watch someone in a t-shirt and shorts rush by you to jump into the building? I wouldn't.

    According to google it means
    "Diving without visibility and with
    tangles are not for everyone"
And I'm not sure but it might be from the "department of public security and social defense of Ceará State" (a state of brasil). So maybe a military or professional rescue training?
But that would be CBMCE not CMAUT. So it might be something else. It would help to know who uploaded it, I can't find the original video.

Can see the argument for twins. In the caves I dive in Thailand, we do dive single back mount tank on a wing with a bail out. Still do rule of thirds, but our penetration depth is usually max 250m at a depth of 15-20m

So, I did a little googling and the second video is from a rescue diver training for the fire department for the state of Pará, in Brazil. Since that state is located in the Amazon region, my guess is they must do underwater work on rivers and such, so entanglement might be a real concern.

Not gonna lie- it’s hard for me to be on the side of “if they wanna die, let them” (for about a hundred reasons) but imagine they really don’t know how much danger they’re in. Imagine they were taught improper preparation. Idk. It’s hard for me to just say well, let them die it’s their life. It’s hard for me to even say I care more about the diving spot being restricted for others with proper gear and knowledge, I wouldn’t…want…someone to die, when I could have helped. If they decided to go in anyway, at that point id be more willing to say ok…I tried, and they chose to risk it, not much else I can do short of truly policing their choices and decision to dive w less than safe precautions taken. Not saying this is what yall are saying, I just struggle to relate to people saying oh just let em die its their choice…Yes, it is…but that’s…still a whole human life. Person probably has family/friends/spouse etc, i think they’d be grateful if someone stopped their loved one from making a fatal mistake/decision. Just my 2 cents

The problem is, nowadays, unless the person drowns, in which case you TOTALLY should have done something, and the internet will flame you for it, or you are just a nosey Karen that should mind your own business, and the internet will flame you for it.
I know its SUPER hard, but at one point you need to be able to look their mothers in the eyes and say "there was signs everywhere. They knew how dangerous it was and that they shouldnt be there. Its 100% their fault".
But its easier to just slap gate and a lock.

I don’t do any dives deeper than 100ft on a single cylinder. As for the second video, it looks almost like a military training dive. If you look closely, both divers appear to have the exact same kit. Looks like military issue equipment for training. If that’s the case, military divers go though some weird shit and I wouldn’t question it. Lol.

Sorry Mark but I think you gave her way too much depth and credit. I'm fairly certain she said "blue-eyed white dragon". Not belied. And I think the white dragon is a similar idea to the white devil. Where they're just calling her an evil blue-eyed white person. The blue eyed and white are both putting emphasis on how different she is from them physically.

So, completely unrelated field, but I have a lot of experience with parentings doing a certain thing (I don't want to be specific but im not in the mood for being yelled at). When I see that something is unsafe, I realize I may not be the most popular person, but in a safe of unsafe use, it could result in major injury or death. I suppose I stick my nose into things, but I say something when I see someone doing something unsafe (but, again, Im that mom that tells kids to have bike helmets and if they don't own one, i give them one to wear,..im kind of protective like that).
As far as what young people "used to do", we used to walk across a bridge a train frequently crossed, with no protective areas in case a train and no idea of the train schedule. Was that stupid? Absolutely? Would I say something if I saw kids doing this. I would probably be screaming at them. But, like I said, maybe I'm just a big mouth and don't like to think later "maybe if i had said something..". Not that is how you guys look at it, just thought i would give you a different perspective. Also, if your goal is to keep caves open, its in your best interest to say something. Win...win. Even if they dont heed your advice, at least your conscience is clear.

Well, that's what they do in the US Navy SEAL training. They tie off their air and entangle them. It's training on how to remain calm. They don't expect you to be able you to clear the airway, but they want you to go through the steps to clear everything. And then they give you to go ahead to surface. And if go up without being cleared, guess what! You get to do it again. Now granted this is a crazy military training, not civilians.

I’m not a confrontational guy, but having them die and knowing I did nothing.. if there already on their way our I would just signal ok and hope they respond ok. I would not stop them on their way out, that could potentially escalate things. Maybe I would follow them out to the cavern zone. Depends on the cave and navigation.
But hey at least the brought a pony bottle 🙊

I just hope the divers getting tangled in the net were not experiencing their first try dive haha XD for real though are you supposed to maybe stop and check divers if they are heading into a cave with clearly incorrect equipment (and training judging from the right of way issue at exit..) what if you passed them and later found out they got lost! Very interesting point for discussion!!

just food for thought on your stop no stop talk. If you approached a diver or two inadequately equipped for survival and asked them if they are OK??? or DO you guys need anything instead of stop we are the dive police turn around etc. Its all about how you approach them. Maybe you can get them to think before they do die. It sucks but a life is important, and we should never want people to meet their end out of such ignorance.

I think the fact that it's even a risk that the authorities would close a cave because of the ignorant, selfish actions of one person just goes to show how utterly immature and inept the authorities are.
People are mortal. Doing _literally anything_ is dangerous to varying degrees. Doing something that is _obviously dangerous_ like going in to an environment where humans quite literally cannot survive, should always, _always_ come with an implicit ownership of culpability.
No one argues that mountains should be closed off when one idiot marches up there during a storm. It's frankly stupid that anyone even suggests it for _cave diving._ A far _less accessible_ sport that is _even more obviously_ dangerous. Shame on anyone who calls for punishing the many because of the foolishness of fools.

the problem with trying to stop someone doing something dangerous is, they quite often will feel like they are not doing something dangerous and will not know you know a lot about the subject, they wont know you're an expert, to them you are just some random killjoy coming up to try to ruin their day.. they are probably more likely to do it. the only way you could stop them is maybe before they get in where you can try to discuss it, show how experienced you are and offer them advice, suggesting not to do it rather than telling them not to do it. for example.. i constantly get people moaning at me for climbing walls or trees, thinking its dangerous.. yes it is... but im reasonably good at climbing.. it could go wrong, but if it does, its pretty rare and them saying beforehand not to do it, doesnt mean that i was dumb for not taking their advice.. ive already done it a 1000 times before and nothing happened.. you could fall down your own stairs in your house and break your neck.. so i could tell everyone constantly not to ever go upstairs and if they do eventually have an accident, tell them "i told you so".. its a ridiculous thing to do... and the problem is.. when u do know a lot and know they are really doing something dangerous liek a 50/50 chance of dying. they will just assume ur those other type of people who think everything is too dangerous and they will ignore you

My two cents, and I’m a newbie cave diver, but if we don’t police our own community, then someone else will eventually end up policing it for us. I personally would rather we police ourselves, and so we should hold each other as divers accountable for obvious negligent and potential lethal activities.
Side note, what if you let someone that is ill equipped / trained pass you without intervention, they die, how would you feel about that? I wouldn’t want that on my conscience.

Not cave diving, but I HAVE told people off under water for going to places they shouldnt, but its been obvious that they were beyond their limits.
In one instance Ive told the dive ops and guides straight up that if a certain diver follow me, I take no responsibility for their safety as they would obviously not be able to do the type of diving me and my buddies does. We would trie to save their ass if all went sideways, but Id rather not have to...

I’m very excited to learn how to dive, but I will never enter a cave. I don’t even like watching videos on cave diving.
