As an actor, i auditioned for this movie. i read my line "oh my god, the cave is flooding with more water!", they asked me why i was smiling and saying the line as if it was my birthday. I told them, "i'm a cave diver, what's not amazing about more watery caves???" unfortunately the didnt give me the role.
I wanted to share a story with you guys because, listening to your podcast through my open water certification saved me from what could have been a very bad and panicked situation. First dive after being certified, I dove Devil's Den in Florida with my partner who is an advanced diver and has close to 200 dives under his belt. I felt confident in the open water PADI training I'd finished that weekend and knew I had a competent partner. He had done some of the swim throughs at DD with a few instructors while those of us in the class continued the course work that weekend. I already had my rental gear and was excited to see the swim throughs he'd described from his dive. So we chose to stay and dive it again the next day. OF COURSE I chose to lead in the one swim through that had a rock formation at the end of a 15' long rock enclosure with roughly a 7' vertical hole at it's entrance. I knew immediately I'd have to back out and that he was behind me. I heard Guss and Woody's voices in my head "stay calm, do not panic, you have air, breathe, think before you move, and do the best you can not to silt up the hole." My boyfriend couldn't see around me but understood immediately that we could not continue forward. I used my fingertips to gently push myself backward, pinning him briefly, but I felt it,didn't panic. I pulled forward, freed him, and we continued backward slowly out of the rock tunnel and into a handstand to get out of the swim through. His fear was that I would panic, silt the space, kick him or pin him and trap us both. But I didn’t and we were both glad for it! My first dive was undoubtedly exhilarating and I'm so glad I prepared by listening to the channel, I felt calm and collected. Thank you both for what you do in sharing these stories and your knowledge. I can not wait to continue this journey!

Truamatic experiences like this hit ppl in ways they never dreamed it would. I'm not a diver, but I've come close to death in a couple different situations, and I know from experience that it can make you not be able to put yourself back into risk of being in that same situation again. I had a really scary experience dry caving when I was about 18- and I developed claustrophobia as a result and to this day- many decades later- have never stepped foot into another cave- and never will. If you put me into a spot where I can't turn and see what's around me- I freak out, start feeling like I can't breathe, and then this unbelievable need to get out arises and I will start fighting and panicking. And it wasn't even that bad of an incident to be honest- we ran out of light about a mile underground. Long story short- we bought a bunch of cheapo Walmart flashlights and tried to explore a local cave- none of us being cavers or having any experience with it. And like I said- they all died, one by one- and left us in complete darkness in a place where we had zero hope of ever finding our way out. Luckily, another group came in and we walked out with them, but we had spent about an hour in the dark trying to figure out what to do. About the time we saw someone's light coming, things were starting to get ugly- ppl were starting to panic and blame one another. And this is not a high traffic cave, this is a cave hardly anyone even knows about- so the chances of another group coming in like that were so small it's insane that it happened and saved us. The group said they went to church nearby and had been talking about coming and checking out the cave after services for weeks- but for some reason, that Sunday- they did it. If they hadn't, I wouldn't be typing this- I'd be dead and no one would've even known where to look for us.
Yeah, you can't predict in advance at all. You can even go through multiple experiences and not develop PTSD and then have something that doesn't even seem as bad happen and wham, PTSD. Our brains are just weird. (Also remember that it's *perception* of danger that is the issue, not objectively how much danger you are in. Hi Gus and Woody, last weekend I qualified with British Sub Aqua Club as an Ocean Diver (to 20m in a UK quarry) and am now on my Sport Diver (to 35-40m) training.. 1st June I'll do my first dive in the sea off the coast of Plymouth, UK, to a ship wreck at 20m. The dry suits are a major faff but fine once you get in the water (unless you hire one with a leaky neck collar like I did!). The only reason I even started was because of watching your reaction videos and Cozumel and live videos! You inspired me to try diving because of the way you explain everything so methodically and how chilled out and positive you both are.... so thank you both! Love your videos!!!
I also went a couple of days without eating, just fluids, when I fell ill with a lung infection during a trip in Cuba. I was active everyday, even went hiking in Escambray Mountains. As long as you keep yourself active the hunger goes away. It's definitely a weird experience. You eventually have to force yourself to eat once you hit a certain stage. That's the hard part.
When i was a kid and fun was still allowed a neighbor set up his crawlspace with gym mats to make cave restrictions for halloween, hearing bout the spelunking conferences reminds me a lot of that.
Am i the only person here who will never dive beyond open water scuba and Mexican cenotes who cannot stop watching cave diving videos and squirming in discomfort the whole time?
Would happily dive in open water. Would never catch me in a cave. Australia is my country and yes everything here is pretty deadly haha. Good to see you gents should come down under definitely
I've watched so many of your videos. So interesting. Thank you; I hope you do them forever! Looking forward to hearing the latest about DAN. Love to both
Man this one had me drooling. I’ve played around in a speleobox (artificial wooden cave box) before too and it is incredible fun. It’ll be a long journey before I’m snaking around in underwater caves in Tulum or Cozumel but I savor every moment training for it ❤
I’m excited to hear about what DAN had to say. I’m glad they actually talked to you guys but also skeptical that maybe they’re giving you guys special treatment.
Wow Gus first time coming back to the channel after a year or so, you look incredible man. Congratulations on the weight loss, you look so much younger. God bless you.
Wow Gus looking good I have been away from your channel for a while and what a transformation. Woody you always looked great maybe have a cheeseburger every now and then. Love the show guys you have all but mastered the reaction video. I learn so much from you two. The first thing is I will never be a cave diver so mucho props to you and the entire community!
I'd like to thank you 2 guys for the hours of entertaining and very informative content your channel has given me. I'm not a person that enjoys water activities unless it's in a pool at a five star resort...! Thanks Woody and Gus. Keep them coming
with videos like this I feel the gain on your mic's is higher than the gain of the video you're reacting to. every time you guys speak my neighbours can hear :D
Very happy to watch this video. You are a great team. I kept thinking the narrator sounded too cheerful for this to be a diving tragedy video. And re fasting, twice a year for Lent is always such a big deal, ha. I feel you, Woody. But Gus, you’re impressive!
Our desire to explore is universal. I have crawled thru and under and over collapsing timbers, one way in, one way out and sometimes, very little air. Def. scares the hell out of me that it could collapse. I did go back to try again and yep, was collapsed.
the lack of hunger while fasting is due to a bodily process called "autophagy" which literally means the body starts eating itself. Basically you start to metabolize energy stored in glycogen and fat, which is why fasting can be an effective way to lose weight if done correctly.
Thank you for explaining equalizing. I have trouble with going down steep hills while driving. I once tried to reach the bottom of a 12' pool and felt like my head was going to explode around 9 or 10'. lol. I never understood how people could go so much deeper and not have it bother them.
8:00 minutes-I am trying to visualize this in my mind and I am sweating and shaking my head no way. Much respect to you guys. You are incredible. I’ll stick to reef dives.
Sound like the beginning of a scary movie. I've been having dreams about being trapped again first when I was just 6 years old and now again while 34 waking up gasping for air twisting blankets around me, wondering if I was in another life drowning in a cave...
20:15 it's called "dynamic pressure" and "static pressure". You can really see the difference in tornado vs straight-line wind (derecho) videos. The dynamic pressure is the same: fast winds blow stuff fast, but with a tornado...that static pressure differential just lifts everything up, and you can't fight it.
I’m no cave diver by any means, but Sanctum is always the movie that comes to mind whenever diving or cave diving is mentioned. I saw it on TV one night a couple years after it came out. The reason I always remember it is because the little part of the poem that gets repeated a few times in the movie. When I saw the movie originally, I liked the poem and memorized it by the end, then I later learned that it was just one part of a larger poem. I still remember that bit of it to this day though, and I’ve only watched Sanctum twice as far as I can remember😂
I got so into Gus's no tank story I forgot about the actual video. 😂 We want y'all to film the pool structure thing you were talking about to watch y'all practice getting stuck & getting out!
I've missed new videos from you guys this is so great if I had the resources I would totally love to take a basic diving class with you guys as my instructors
In order to "stay calm" while facing death, you have to have already come to terms with your own mortality, which most people have not. I think people who face danger and do things that entail high risk are more likely to have accepted the fact that they could die doing these things. They want to live, obviously, but when facing a life/death situation and reaching calmness... there is a level of detachment from survival that has been internalized. Overcoming desperation and panic for humans is extremely difficult and requires some intense mental and physical training.
It's so funny to me that the rest of the world sees Australia as everything is Tryna kill you. I never really knew that til recently. Coz I don't feel like that living here at all 😂😂
Unfortunately it isn't just the narration. It's gotten advanced enough that the ENTIRE process is automated. The voice is AI generated, the dialogue is AI generated and even the video editing is AI generated. The bot is fed a theme/information for the video and is supplied clips, then, when the video is edited together, it generates a narration for each edited bit of the video for it to plausibly fit together and be coherent. There may be some human editing and tweaking made to the final product but since the channel of this original video is terminated, I don't know how lazy this particular channel is. You'll see this notoriously with the current "movie recap channel" plague. The content farms using this tech is getting really atrocious and so long as they can profit off of it and people continue to watch it, this problem will only get worse.
You guys should definitely go to Australia and meet up with Dr. Harris! The Great Barrier Reef is a must-see for every diver, you can’t even describe it! Not even woodys impressive hat collection!
the random rambling about fasting was really cool, i love fasting as well. my longest has been 3 days but i couldve continued for sure, its definitely possible to not eat for that long!

Almost every open water dive master I have worked with has had a ascent rule...I.E.At 500 psi begin your ascent, at deeper depths the amount can vary depending on number of decomp stops. But the ability of unrestricted direct ascent makes the rule of thirds very flexible for open water. Once again you guys are boss!
LMAO It was the "He likes to rough it up" .. "We had to rough it up, too, weren't we in a 3-star hotel?" ... "We had to procure our own breakfast." LMAO Reminded me of Air Force versus Army/Marines 🤣
I dived Pannakin's a few years ago. Spectacular dive but the dry entry section looks incredibly unstable still, and we take a lot of survival gear just in case the entry collapses.
To every cave explorer, wet or dry: Light and electricity work in unintuitive ways. It's pretty easy for a light to last days or weeks at reduced brightness. It might be worth to have a light with you that has the option to lower the brightness to such a low level. Human eyes adapt well to lower light conditions and seeing a bit less is better than seeing nothing in an emergency situation. I got a night light in the bathroom powered by 2 AAA Batteries that is bright enough to see the whole room and even read stuff (once your eyes are adapted), and a pair of batteries lasts about a year of being on 24/7.

A submerged cage that help train diving in a tight space with sides that can open for people who have difficulty is a great idea
Am i the only person here who will never dive beyond open water scuba and Mexican cenotes who cannot stop watching cave diving videos and squirming in discomfort the whole time?
Nope I am right with you
Hon, I only go to the pool and beach shore. Lol.
dude I don’t think I’ll ever even get the chance to dive lmao
Would happily dive in open water. Would never catch me in a cave. Australia is my country and yes everything here is pretty deadly haha.
Good to see you gents should come down under definitely
Woody it's not Star Trek it's a clip from the movie "Sanctum". Most of the footage is from that film.❤
Edit: comment made before Gus mentioned it😂
I've watched so many of your videos.
If the special treatment we’re receiving translates into benefits introduced to the entire dive community then that’s all good!
I just love you guys! Thank you for always keeping it real!
Love Spelunking as well! Rule is that if you can fit thru a metal clothes hanger you can go into restricted caves.
I believe he was talking about the pressure of the walls as he squeezed thru the restriction.
with videos like this I feel the gain on your mic's is higher than the gain of the video you're reacting to.
every time you guys speak my neighbours can hear :D
algorithm must be working I been binge watching cave explorations all week! Great content!
Haven’t laughed harder than I did at “we had to procure our own breakfast man” 😂😂😂😂
Very happy to watch this video.
Gus looking really good! Applause. Would be cool to hear from him his journey.
the lack of hunger while fasting is due to a bodily process called "autophagy" which literally means the body starts eating itself.
I have never been diving before but I love your videos. You totally answered one of the questions I had about clearing and pressure. Thank you!
Hate to say this but quite likely; I'd seek professional help to clear this traumatic memory....
I love you guys so much!! I am obsessed with your videos and i love watching your witty banter back and fourth 😁😁 you guys a freaking awesome!! ❤❤
Woah I haven’t watched one of yall videos in a while and omg Gus looks sooo good !!!
You need to dive the Shaft with Mike and Edd.
Thank you for talking about equalizing and the pressure differences lol, before you did that I wanted to ask about it so bad😅
Gus's visceral reaction to this tale is the best part.
Thanks for giving a shout out to Don Shipley, he's a great dude and he's doing a great thing, thank you
Hope you get to 0.5mn subscribers soon !
You both deserve it.
I got so into Gus's no tank story I forgot about the actual video. 😂 We want y'all to film the pool structure thing you were talking about to watch y'all practice getting stuck & getting out!
I just found this channel and man! Yall age well! Seriously dude you both look healthier than when you started
Aussie here! ☺️ Not a diver but love your videos, I've learnt so much!
OMG Gus wearing the GRIM REAPER from the warning signs? Thats hilarious! :D You guys never stop disappointing!
Scorpions sting you! Lol.... Scorpion bite! Lmfao
I was a roofer for 15 years. What you described is exactly the techniques I used to put fear aside and do dangerous things day after day.
So sorry the reaction video to "Sanctum" got blocked by YT... Can we watch it somewhere else?
Big respect and thanks to Gus and Woody!
It's so funny to me that the rest of the world sees Australia as everything is Tryna kill you. I never really knew that til recently. Coz I don't feel like that living here at all 😂😂
Thank all the gods that the falling debris didn't snap the guideline or alter it leading into the abyss!
I love Gus’s versions of the chat bot extreme adjective laden commentary that he sprinkles throughout: “MiLkY dArKnEsS😮😮😮” 18:54
Lol@ that opening marriage moment...😂😂😂every time you go our credit card it maxed out...lmaooo..* and the eyes roll😂...loves you guys.
Sounds like everyone is using chat gpt now for narration.
Yeah its AWful
Yes on Mr. Shipley! Love his channel 🎉
Holy crap Gus, I must have missed some recent videos. Where is the rest of you? Good for you my man. Looking svelte!
damn, gus lookin shredded! keep up the work man, it's showing!
You guys should definitely go to Australia and meet up with Dr. Harris! The Great Barrier Reef is a must-see for every diver, you can’t even describe it! Not even woodys impressive hat collection!
If I went without eating for 27 hours, I would request cheeseburgers over oxygen.
Funny thing is I'm sick and I haven't eaten in two days and the first thing I just ate was a cheeseburger lol
omg the fasting tangent was hilarious
I love gus's Grimm reaper warning chain
the random rambling about fasting was really cool, i love fasting as well. my longest has been 3 days but i couldve continued for sure, its definitely possible to not eat for that long!
I like ur guys vids. I wanted to be an underwater welder when I was a kid in middle school and still now over 20 yrs later would love to get into diving and your vids always inspire me. Sometimes though I miss out on alot of important information that woody is explaining cause gus can like to cut him off sometimes lol
Roughing it in a 3 star hotel 😂😂😂
Taking my daughters to Cozumel at the end of July for their 2nd dive trip. Asked them if they wanted to do 3 days of diving or 2 with zero hesitation they both replied 3 I love it
Coming after a year to see how you guys going. I was here when you guys had 20k followers. Great channel.
I love watching you all talk about diving and caves BC there's no way I could after I almost drowned. Gus talking about fitting through holes 😂 and woody willing to do anything but wants us to understand very well!!
😂 " I'm to old to rough it like that anymore " I totally felt that Woody 😅 at 60 yrs old I find myself trying to make everything a little more comfortable 😂
It's a tough cave to get into, and out of, but amazing to dive. I hope to get back there.
Hello from Idaho!
Love your channel! ❤ I've been watching for awhile 😊 Wish I was brave enough to go diving but I've convinced myself I would panic.
I'll just leave the diving to people like you guys! 😁
Oddly, missing a splash of Pink
Almost every open water dive master I have worked with has had a ascent rule...I.E.At 500 psi begin your ascent, at deeper depths the amount can vary depending on number of decomp stops. But the ability of unrestricted direct ascent makes the rule of thirds very flexible for open water. Once again you guys are boss!
LMAO It was the "He likes to rough it up" .. "We had to rough it up, too, weren't we in a 3-star hotel?" ... "We had to procure our own breakfast." LMAO Reminded me of Air Force versus Army/Marines 🤣
I'm so late watching this one. Just watched...Thank you Gus and Woody 🥰
I dived Pannakin's a few years ago. Spectacular dive but the dry entry section looks incredibly unstable still, and we take a lot of survival gear just in case the entry collapses.
I've never gone cave diving, and don't ever intend to. The whole idea just seems terrifying to me.
But I enjoy the heck out of these videos.
I watch Don Shipley to, there's a podcast with another SEAL interviewing his son DJ who was on SEAL team 6.
@@yavin99 Shawn Ryan - that interview is amazing
The energy rush and extra mental clarity of fasting for a certain amount of time is a thing.
