Hi all! Nick here! 😄 Thank you for sharing the story and your views on it! I watched it with great interest!
To answer the question how long Martin's "final effort" swim was, I recall him saying it was maybe 2-3 minutes but he didn't have a watch so it's a guess. He also mentioned off camera that he thinks that the cave has multiple horizontal layers and that he somehow ended up on a different "level" than where we were searching. He never noticed anything of the search party.
Indeed the bit about "every cave diver knows you turn around in a silt out" was poor wording. It's indeed part of the limits we had set for ourselves because we were indeed laying line AND looking for someone. So we had agreed that pushing into the unknown trough a silt out with no knowledge of how quickly it would settle, and not knowing if we would find a body or a very panicked person in an air pocket would just be above our pay grade. Part or why we agreed to a search in the first place was because otherwise other, less knowledgeable volunteers might have tried and perhaps pushed too far.
Thanks for sharing the story! 🫡

It would have to have layers, but the hole he climbed out of and felt the rats nest, and broke through the ceiling proves it, but that would mean Martin was caught in hole with fresh air, so that would equalize water levels with every other hole that has porous Rock holes. I would like to see that cave mapped correctly.

    • @DiveSAGA
      @DiveSAGA 25 дней назад +21

@shable1436 yes I am also not entirely clear on the structure of the cave. I do think he meant he fell out of a small hole in the wall, not necessarily the ceiling (but my animation skills are limited lol).

What he means about the daylight guys is that when you get to the mouth of a cave, you can see the exit, because it is illuminated with daylight.. with a cave dive that is inside of an additional dark cave, you never get that affirmation of seeing the light of day coming through the exit.. hence bringing the lights in.

Amazing story! Well done and happy ending! I think when he said "Daylight" I don't think he was talking about time of day. I think he meant a well lit secure scene. I'm a recovery/investigation diver and after our first briefing we set up our scene/staging area where we can prep our divers, tenders, medical, and command. It couldn't have been an easy decision to stop the dive, but I would shake his hand and said he made the right call. It isn't easy to accept your limits and I've seen a lot of good divers never dive again because they pushed it to hard.

I'd like to address a couple issues you talked about. Regarding the "sunlight', I believe what he was saying was that to have a reference point to return to and have surface support illumination.
Regarding the silt out, you should abort the dive for a cave silt out...when you searching for a body in an unknown cave. If you are in a total blackout situation in an unknown area, add trying to find a body...not a smart move.
    I could be wrong though.

The images of the air pockets really helped me to understand what Martin was describing. Amazing video.
Also what an incredible diver Martin is, there is definitely a reason why staying would be the safer option but Martin was probably the most qualified as well as most experienced (of this cave in particular) and taking the responsibility of his own survival is incredible.
I also assume Martins real issue was time, since he could make the dive but if he is weakend or air runs low he immediately becomes realiant on rescue. As time passes he would probably start using more air due to becoming more paniced, he also was aware of the fact that he had already lost track of time and would probably start making increasingly desperate attempts. Brave choice but seems like a calculated one even if he admits to being in a paniced state.
Great story. Great video. Great commentary.

Please correct me if I’m wrong but a CCR is basically a portable personal gas blender so when it comes to decompression time, you can blend the ideal gas mixture for that purpose. If a diver has a CCR failure near the end of their dive it would stand to reason that this could have a significant impact on their decompression time since they would have to use whatever blend they were carrying in their OC backup…. Another question, is Martin planning on doing any more free diving in caves?!?!?! 😂

Regarding risking diarrhea to stay in that little air pocket, diarrhea does a lot more damage than just dehydration. You’ll lose any nutrients in the stuff still in your GI, and you’ll lose electrolytes. Both of these can hasten exhaustion and death, especially since the electrolyte loss can lead to heart failure! So in reality, unless you have some kind of filtration system for freshwater, or unless it’s rainwater, it would probably be better to wait out death by dehydration than death by heart attack.

Gus, when ppl say cave diving gets more dangerous at night, they are talking about emergency procedures above ground.
Remember, everyone else has already worked all day. They're already tired.
Then there is equipment loading in the dark, driving to the scene in darkness, navigating harrowing access points - gathering gear & ppl together all in darkness adds time & effort & frustration before any search even truly gets underway.

What was the temperature in the hole? I'd think he would have been subject to hypothermia. Even if the hole was "dry" I would assume the humidity is high. After swimming around I can't imagine feeling dry down there.

Question from a non-cave diver: it's not clear whether or not Nick and his buddy had a map of the cave or knew the layout going into the search. Do you guys think that could've been a factor in the decision to call the dive upon reaching the silt-out? If you knew the cave kept going along the same trajectory beyond all the silt, then it would make sense to keep going, no? The silt would suggest you're probably getting close to Martin, after all.
On the other hand, if Nick had no idea what the other side of that silt-out looked like-i.e., for all he knew, the silt was hiding five different branching paths-then the decision to call it makes a lot more sense to me. That's my armchair read, anyway.

8:18 I completely 100% agree with this take on it.
I would much rather acknowledge right away, right upfront, from the get-go, that something (such as cave diving) is absolutely inherently dangerous.
I think that before anything else, thats the correct point to start on, and the correct way to humble yourself to that reality of the nature of what you're doing. And THEN, from there, while keeping that fact before all others, you can start planning and preparing to mitigate that risk of danger as much as you possibly can.
Its sort of the way that before a drug addict can actually get the help he needs and start to recover from active addiction, that person must first humble himself to the reality of his situation. He must start by admitting to himself that he does have a problem, and that he is infact a drug addict, before moving forward with any effective mode of recovery is possible.
You first, for better or for worse, must accept reality as it is, and for what it is, before you begin to deal with it accordingly. Regularly humbling yourself in that manner helps in keeping you from becoming too comfortable.
When dealing with something that is inherently dangerous, and poses an inherent risk to your life, becoming too comfortable with that danger is dangerous in itself. Cemeteries are full of guys who were masters of their craft, and lost their lives to it, simply because they became too comfortable with the inherent danger of what they were doing.
Therefore, i wholeheartedly agree that its always best to start with acknowledging that the activity you are doing is dangerous, and that your safety protocols and preparations are written in the blood of experts who lost their lives doing what they were the best at.
First and foremost, the dangers of an activity such as cave diving..or open water diving..or free diving, skydiving, wingsuit flying, rock climbing, etc..must be given its proper respect.
On a side note...talk about luck being on this man's side! WOW! What an incredible story. If i would have survived something like that, if be booking the very first flight i could to Vegas!!! 🤣
