1st off Woody, don't get serious. Our world right now is 95% serious, 5% fun, easy going & stress reducing. You are such an accomplished professional on a multitude of fronts. What's most impressive about you is how real you are, the at times child like enthusiasm you have for life, you're one of a kind. You make us laugh, you teach us, you learn from us. While the subject of cave diving can be morbid at times, the addition of your humor at times is enough to not scare people off from wanting to experience the hobby of diving in general. The reason the LIDAR mapping device isn't "on all the time" is because it sends out pulses of light and reads how much light is reflected back at the device. It pauses between pulses because it needs to read the reflection of the last pulse before it sends out another so it can accurately tell how far away objects in the cave are.

    • @MegaFPVFlyer
      @MegaFPVFlyer Год назад +5

I know this is old, but it's likely that the flashing is to conserve battery or something similar. The light takes microseconds to return at this distance, so if they wanted, the laser could be flashed hundreds if not thousands of times per second. I'm guessing that they took a hit on resolution to improve some other aspect of the device.
One thing thats strange, however, is that they're using visible light. Most LIDAR systems I've seen use invisible lasers. Perhaps those wavelengths don't travel as well through water? I'm not sure.

    • @Nilboggen

With all the tragedies, disasters, and fails channels related to diving in general, sat-diving and cave diving, and "extreme" diving in particular, I want to thank you guys! Thanks for being the relative anchors into reality for all those times I've stumbled across about a dozen stories of "If you get underwater, YOU ARE GOING TO DIE HORRIBLYYYYYYYYY!!!!!" all sharks twisting their mustaches... and syphons and sinkholes leaping out to swallow me whole... and gravel slides just WAITING for my bubbles to release them to CRUSH ME... or my fellow workers plotting and scheming to open the dive bell while I'm still under 9 atmospheres so someone can find my intestines or spine some 30 meters away from the hatch...
It's nice to find just ONE place on all of RUclips where a few folks can sit and talk like ordinary people... where divers aren't portrayed as testosterone fueled adrenaline junkies all jockeying position for the next "Hold my beer and WATCH THIS" moment of antics and suicidal ideation... It's nice to know that strapping on a set of fins and tanks isn't tantamount to losing what little g** d*** sanity I still have left.
Thanks for setting records straight... even if Gus STILL doesn't believe someone could possibly stab himself out of shear terror underwater...
...okay, I don't know about that part either, if we're 100% honest. It's just fishy for being THE ONLY TIME that I've ever heard of... AND I've LOOKED... haha
Thanks for having Edd Sorrenson share his wit, wisdom, and stories over the times... bringing a dose of reality and "how it really happens" to those of us who can still end up scratching our heads wondering "Why would anyone even DO that job???"
AND of course, Woody... NEVER EVER grow up! Anyone telling you not to be childish or silly is trying to SABOTAGE your channel! It's who you are... AND the rest of the world doesn't need any more seriousness. It's already too serious as it is, and it SUCKS... ;o)

It's interesting because I know what u are talking about, only through your continued determination to make sure that EVERYONE is involved in what u are sharing. SO..in short..ur explanations are VITAL. and I can't thank both of u enough. Otherwise I would have quit watching a long time ago. Also..u guys are funny as funny can be..Your contrasting personalities are hilarious! GUS...ur expressions are priceless when it comes to Woody. And Woody u are funny. The most HILARIOUS thing I ever heard was when you & Gus took that gold u found to sell it..& when u walked out of the building, you said something like, "He just didn't have enough money to buy this gold!" I NEVER LAUGHED SO HARD !and The way Gus was shaking his head...COMEDY CLASSIC!. Gus..Mucho Gusto. MI Madre es GONZALEZ tambien.Pero de Tejas. Yo soy LOPEZ pero Nimodo. jaja.. Woody. nice to meet u.You guys have a great day.

I was really focused on every second of this video. I think it was because of how serious Gus was. He was straight to the point, no jokes, no quips. His serious tone really did "shine a light" on this video.

Been watching most of your videos here entire week (sometimes 6 hours while doing work on the side) and some reason your channel makes me happy all the time. Just wanted to say thank you for making so awesome videos. I can't wait for the Mexico videos! Again you both are awesome! Also first time ever I have started to consider of whole diving aspect, thanks to you. Obviously it takes a lot of time and a lot of training with good instructors. But my thoughts are there.

Gus asked about the activation of the “ultraviolet” colored mapping, at 14:34 it looks like he is doing a button press with two fingers of his right hand to activate something. Perhaps this is how he’s initiating the mapping “snapshot?”
    Impressively steady movement and control!
(This has probably already been mentioned, but I love this channel so much and am sad I wasn’t able to watch this sooner. ❤️

I tried to do a little scuba to see if I like it, I put the equipment on and got in the water, obviously with an instructor. I was in the water less than five meters in, yes five meters, than I started panicking and got out. I felt so vulnerable, plus, only breathing through my mouth is very challenging for me since I hated my whole life. I have mad respect for the guys in this channel, their advises and honesty are life savers.

Thanks for all the great info!

Are you for real? That 3D scanner look straight sci-fi. Holy, this is so cool! YES! someone must make a diving game/simulator. I would love to get only a tiny bit of the experience of going cave diving! I recently checked out if anything like that at all exists and there doesn't seem to be anything. Subnautica was fun for a while, but I like more challenging and simulated approach! And, just be able to use a cave diving game/simulator in order to get more familiar and figure out where you can put your tanks etc. etc. is going to be invaluable for the cave diving community for sure. What a time to be alive guys!
The more I watch of your videos the more I realise I seriously need to try scuba. I have high hopes that my country Norway have some excellent instructors due to our insane 83,281 km coastline (almost 1/3 of the land). You can't escape the cold water though, the Gulf stream is constantly renewing the water.
Wait, his name is Robbie Sorensen? My last name is Sørensen as well haha. It's a very common last name, but he must have Scandinavian background for sure?

At 14:45 you can see him triggering the scan himself. Why not just scan continuously ? My guess is because of the amount of data and the time/computer power needed to process it. I'm just guessing, i don't have any knowledge of this kind of technology, but i can imagine this type of device generating a huge amount of data. Also, if the scan was continuous, every little uncontrolled movements would probably add noise in the data collected. I would love to see you two interview him about this !

Striations are a function of sedimentary layers of rocks laid down layer at a time. The striations are markers between various amounts of minerals etc, but almost always subject to the action of water with minerals in solution , over ages called epochs (super long periods of time….450 million years, 1.2 billion years etc. ) You guys have a superb channel! Thanks

Gus - whatever you are doing right now is working bro. You look fantastic. I'm on a similar journey right now.
I'm a former professional athlete. As a young kid I was grossly overweight, but seemingly overnight I grew into my body. I was 6'2" by age 13. Started lifting weights and playing basketball and everything just fell into place. By my mid 20's my professional athletic career was over, but I was still able to eat and do whatever I wanted and still easily maintain my physique.
Then I turned 30 and things started becoming more challenging. Still though, I was more "in shape" than 90% of US adult males.. then once again, at age 35, seemingly overnight everything changed. I once again became grossly overweight.
I'm 37 now, 6'4" and 300 lbs. This is after losing almost 30 lbs over the course of the last 2 weeks. My blood pressure was hovering around 160 / 120 for about a year (completely untreated). I was drinking 6-8 diet cokes every single day. Working 60+ very stressful hrs in retail management every single week. I was literally standing on the edge and primed to stroke out at any moment. I was terrified to go to the doctor and I kept putting it off.
The funny thing is how quickly I was able to turn things around. Once I was basically forced to see a doctor by my family, I learned that my health situation wasn't nearly as dire as I expected (outside of the Stage 3 Hypertension, obviously). Cut out the diet cokes, started drinking a gallon of cold water every day, stopped binge eating altogether, stopped eating late at night. Found the motivation to get back in the gym. It sucked for 2 or 3 days but then I was all in. Now I don't even want any of that garbage because it would compromise the results I'm already seeing.
Getting the ball rolling is always very challenging, but once you've got some momentum it isn't difficult. I have no clue why I felt compelled to share all of this with you, but here we are. I love hearing all about other people's weight loss journeys so I figured I'd tell you about my own. Seriously though, you are killing it Gus. Please keep going, you're a huge motivation for me. I wish you the absolute best.

The History of Jacob’s well is interesting. It was thought at one time to spill 170 gallons per second. It was like 12ft wide and extreme flow. My understanding is it was altered due to powering a saw mill.
