    I also covered this dive and to clear things up, John had a motorcycle accident which limited his mobility even years later, so when he went to dive in SDD he had to remove his rebreather to get through the tight entrance, and was unable to fully get it back on properly which lead to it getting caught in the restriction as he was making his return journey, which is why he switched to the bailout tank.

      Interestingly enough, there were many incidents prior to John's death, with cavers getting stuck but making it out alive. It seems he was the only fatality, and it's certainly haunting that it ended up being his tomb. At least no one will accidentally come across his bones now that it's sealed. Tragic regardless.

    "They decide to punch back into the caves claustrophobic maw!!!" I think the last time I heard the word "maw" was from my great great grandmother and she died waaaayyy before I was even thought of but she managed to make a recording of herself on one of those super super old Victrolas where you could record yourself onto one of those super thick wax records but only got one take and that was it. So for some reason all she could come up with on the spot was: "Sheep's stomach is known as paunch and pigs'stomach as hog's maw."

    I love your reactions to these bad videos, as they are (for me) the best combo of entertainment and educational content on your channel! It is funny how these types of videos (the kind you're reacting to here) follow the same formula: ChatGPT or plagiarized script, stock dive footage from random caves, a few photos of the people involved and the real cave itself, and maybe even real footage of the cave in the incident (but not footage of the incident itself). Add in a monotone but slightly menacing voice over, and somehow these videos make some easy money for the channel. But at least they sometimes give us these amazing reaction videos!

    This reminds me of a college paper that needs to be at least 8 pages but you can only get to 4. So you rephrase every important detail at least once, then probably a 3rd time in the next paragraph, making sure to devote a lengthy sentence for every time. Then you start making up parts that you assume are correct, hoping that the teacher won't realize that you have no idea what you're writing about. Then as a Last resort you add 1 unnecessary adjective and adverb MINIMUM to each sentence because if you add too many then the teacher will absolutely realize that you've padded out you're entire paper if they haven't already, which they probably have.

    **Title: The Abyss of Eternal Night**
    *Setting: Deep within the bowels of a sunken limestone cave, a lone diver, Jake "The Shadow" Dalton, moves through the darkness like a ghost, his rebreather hissing softly in the suffocating silence. The water is so black that it seems to absorb light itself, swallowing the beam from his flashlight almost entirely. Claustrophobia clings to him like a second skin as he inches forward, feeling the weight of thousands of tons of rock pressing down from above.*
    ---
    **Jake's Inner Monologue:**
    "One wrong move," Jake thought, feeling his heart pounding like a war drum in his chest, "and I'll be swallowed by this hellish abyss, never to be seen again." Each slow breath through his rebreather was a desperate prayer for survival. The cave's walls were closing in on him, narrowing to a sinister squeeze. If his equipment snagged even slightly, the razor-sharp rocks would rip into his suit, turning the icy water into his grave.
    He could almost hear the cave whispering its lethal secrets. "Do you dare, mortal?" it seemed to hiss, the echo of his movements rippling through the water like a death knell. His flashlight flickered, casting ghostly shadows on the ancient stalactites that hung like the fangs of a slumbering beast, ready to plunge and impale.
    **The Squeeze:**
    Ahead lay the infamous Devil’s Throat-a tunnel no wider than his shoulders. Jake knew that one slip here, one panicked motion, and he could wedge himself into the suffocating grip of solid rock. Sweat mixed with saltwater stung his eyes, but he dared not wipe it away. His hands were trembling, fingers white-knuckling his dive light as he forced his body through the gap, feeling the stone scrape against his sides like the icy touch of Death himself.
    **The Silt and the Abyss:**
    Suddenly, Jake's fin brushed against the cave floor. Instantly, a cloud of silt erupted like an underwater dust storm, blotting out all vision. It was like being plunged into an endless void where up and down lost all meaning. Panic surged through him, a tidal wave of adrenaline screaming to claw his way back to open water. But Jake gritted his teeth, muscles tensed. He knew that a blind rush could send him spiraling into the unknown, where a hidden crevasse could snare him, his air would run out, and his bones would lie in the darkness, lost for all eternity.
    **The Subterranean River:**
    As he pressed on, Jake felt a sudden, bone-chilling current tugging at him, a subterranean river that surged through the cave with the force of a thousand stampeding bulls. It threatened to yank him off course, to drag him into some unfathomable chamber where the water pressure could crush him like an egg. His grip on the rocky walls tightened, fingers searching for every crevice, every handhold to keep from being swept away into the abyss.
    **Hallucinations in the Darkness:**
    Hours seemed to stretch into lifetimes. The weight of darkness pressed on his mind, and Jake began to see shapes in the shadows. Was that a flicker of movement, or just his oxygen-starved brain playing tricks? He imagined creatures of legend-blind, eyeless monsters lurking in the depths, their teeth glinting with the hunger of centuries. He could almost feel them swimming just out of sight, their jaws opening, ready to snatch him into their black maws.
    **The Final Chamber:**
    At last, he saw a glimmer of light-his goal. A small air pocket, a bubble of salvation nestled in the stone. But between him and safety stretched the Grotto of Doom, a labyrinth of jagged rocks that twisted and turned like the intestines of some prehistoric beast. One wrong turn, and he could be lost in this maze, his air dwindling to nothing, his lungs heaving as he gasped for breath that would never come.
    **Jake’s Resolve:**
    His body ached, muscles burning from the effort. But Jake pushed forward, driven by the primal urge to survive. He squeezed through the labyrinth, scraping his skin against stone, until at last, he broke the surface. Sweet, precious air filled his lungs, and he let out a roar of victory, his voice echoing through the cavern like the battle cry of a warrior who had faced the darkest depths and emerged unscathed.
    For now, Jake had conquered the cave. But the black, silent waters around him were a reminder that in this realm of eternal night, danger was never more than a heartbeat away.
    ---
    *Jake stared into the water beneath him, the dark, silent expanse waiting. He knew he would dive again, driven by the siren call of the abyss, to face the unspeakable horrors that lurked in the depths. For in the world of cave diving, the line between life and death was razor-thin, and only those who dared to dance on its edge could truly claim to be alive.*

    It is amazing to me that no one has invented submersible autonomous drones to survey these cave systems. Not only would they be able to go places humans can't, but they would be able to measure the widths of passages before a person ever even tried to fit through them.

    • @wildalentejo
      @wildalentejo Год назад +6

      Transmission between rocks is still in its infancy, there are already some very capable scuba drones to explore but without the proper technology to communicate with it gets quite tricky.

      Those do exist. There was an interview on Dive Talk a year or so ago with Jill Heinerth. Among the gear she uses to explore caves was a mapping submersible. While on cable, it was able to return info to the surface in real time. Off cable, it would explore for a limited time, then return to the surface, where the data is downloaded from the drone. Very cool technology. 😎

    • @MarvinWestmaas
      @MarvinWestmaas Год назад

      Yeah but I don't think that drone was up to task of actually navigating extremely narrow passages, that was a fairly bulky drone with all the lidar and scanners on it.
      I think that besides the drone mentioned which surely is capable of mapping anything but those tightest places, some smaller perhaps even 'expendable probes if they can't return' which you don't want to risk with a drone costing millions. Have the bigger drone act as a 'mothership', and be able to use smaller drones to aid it it where it can't risk passing through itself.

      I did some underwater robotics stuff for competitions in school. Enclosed environments provide a more difficult engineering problem than one may initially expect, especially when you consider there isn't much commercial reason for cave exploration so budget is tight. That said, technology is only getting better, and it'll be exciting to see what is available in the coming years.
