It’s Jonny Craig. It’s winter time, snowing side ways, it’s me on a school bus in 2010, it’s me thinking about a girl that I fell in love with. It’s my vibes as a young blood enjoying music for the first time in my life. Miss this! This album introduces me into everything
Jonny’s voice expresses depth in such an emotionally artistic way and you could just feel it hit you. So powerful but vulnerable, so strong but gentle. The contrast is what makes it so beautiful. Actually, contrast done well is so incredible… it’s why dgd was able to make this album as amazing as it is.
They call the genre swancore, will swan the guitarist pretty much created this noodly guitar style to add onto post hardcore, they do a lot of experimenting with different styles in the later albums but they nail it every time.
Wouldn't consider this album swancore nor did Will create anything. The DBM1 instrumentals are solid, but Will's playing was heavily inspired by earlier 00s phc/math/prog/experimental bands like Fall of Troy as the other person said. What ultimately made this album unique and successful was Jonny, as I don't think we had heard a voice like that over that instrumental style before. DBM2 is when the swancore roots were laid down, then Will created his own label, then Tilian era DGD became quite popular, and that modern DGD style is what swancore bands sound like. No hate. DBM1 is a classic and Will is an incredible player.
This requires a whole Playlist of its own "Swancore" named after the guitarist Will Swan. And other bands you could add to it is Hail The Sun, A Lot Like Birds, Stolas, Sianvar, Eidola, Secret Band, and Royal Coda. Most of these bands have members that play in these other bands I've mentioned under Will Swan's record label Blue Swan Records.
Idk if I'd call alot like birds swancore. They definitely fall within the taste but Kurt's cultivated a pretty unique sound and I don't love him to death but he good. Royal coda is definitely swanny
@@i8764theKevassitant I don't know if you can count any band Will Swan is in as "swancore" like Royal Coda. It's less swancore and more just... swan, cause he's literally in the band. The only real swancore band I can think of right now is Dwellings. As I listen to more DGD and more post-hardcore the more I disagree that swancore bands are the ones people say they are, I don't think Hail The Sun have that much of a DGD sound even. Hail The Sun pulls way more from The Fall of Troy and Mars Volta than DGD. It's only recently that they've started to have a more poppy sound closer to that of modern-day DGD. A Lot Like Birds as well, pulls a SHIT TON of The Mars Volta sound. I think a lot of those in this community haven't listened to At The Drive-In or The Mars Volta and so don't _realize_ how much of these "swancore" bands' sounds actually come back to Volta and not the bands that descended from them. I will agree with Wolf and Bear.
Sometimes its unbelievable this music exists. Its so good i cant wrap my head around it, backwards pumpkin song always blows me away. I watch reactions just to pretend im around people who appreciate my favorite shit even a fraction of how i feel. This dude gets it tho fr.
15 years later and this is still my favorite album which is still played more then any other album in my entire Spotify library. When all else fails, and new music Friday has been running dry, I go right back to this album

Im a little late to the party but awesome youre doing the DGD journey. There are plenty of lineup changes during the bands early years and youll get to see their sound change and evolve over their discography. This album has one of my all time fave DGD tracks- Lemon Meringue Tie.
Looool your reactions are so funny "oooh! OOOH!! Oh damn!" This album fucked you good, didn't it? I love hearing people react to this album for the first time, I remember first hearing it in 2007 and was blown away for 3 years straight off it. Still listen to it to this day, nothing touches this album for me. So glad its now part of your life too, congrats lol

Straight up. I love going back and indulging with you on all these records. It's very validating and having someone else enjoy all the little moments is super fun. Keep it up, bro. There's so much more to be stoked about.
.... Kinda a weird angle.. but I've always wondered if DTBM was really that good cuz Sean O'Sullivan was playing lead guitar before Will Swan really developed.
Check out "Secret Band". It's the same guys without Jonney Creig. A bit heavier but still groovy af or if you want jazzy/proggy instrumental stuff try "Strawberry Girls"
Awesome second video! I have enjoyed the listens, and love that you're digging them as hard now as I did 15 years ago! 🤘 Excited to see you hit the first loop in the rollercoaster!

there were more copycats back in the day but they didn’t last. this album defined post hardcore with math/prog metal roots (guitar and drums). The uniqueness is from how R&B (singer) and rap focused (screamer) the vocalists are. They are all artists in their own right but the vocal delivery from the screaming and singing makes this its own. They made this album when they were in high school. Just incredible.

Same here. I fell in love with Jonny's voice.
Found them when I was 18. Was never a fan of Jonny in DGD but I’m coming round to it.

Literally unbeatable m. A fucking masterpiece.
Top 3 all time for me without question I’ve been listening to it for almost a decade now
Will always be top 10 for me, but nothing beats Sky Eats Airplane's self titled album
Give this album another 10-15 years, it will be regarded as one of the most monumental albums of this genre. Just watch ….
