    The Kinks were England's first alternative band , looking at a very English life like the song Autumn Almanac , they did it with off beat lyrics and humour , dead end street was a great song and they were a fantastic group .

    One of my favourite Kinks songs about poverty in the UK, which was abundant in the 1960s. The film preceded Monty Python by 3 years, which started in the fall of 1969. The Kinks are parodying comedy sketches of the silent movies of Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, etc.

      I think the influence for the video was probably the early Beatles movies, Help and A Hard Days Night that were shot in a similar style.

    This was made almost 2 years before Monty Python aired. I was 12-13yr old living in New Zealand when this song/video came out. The only TV station available (NZBC) used this video and The Beatles Penny Lane to plug up gaps in programming. The video was also banned from airing on the BBC

    1966. Pre- Monty Python, pre- Madness. This video was banned by the BBC. The Kinks saw thru the glamour of Swinging London of the 60s. Did the Clash's London Calling take the opening riff from this song? Did Oasis pay homage to this video with the importance of being idle video?

    The kinks were/are so ahead of their time, no one was representing the working classes in the UK at the time of 60/70s, we were all blind sided by the Beatles, Stones and then Hippy movement. This was a class awakening to the struggles of the people working to live. Lola is a prime example of the Kinks, banned from the US.

    • @ComplicatedLife1
      @ComplicatedLife1 8 месяцев назад

      Lola wasn’t banned in the US but some radio stations faded out the song prior to the “and so is Lola” reveal. The BBC banned it because it mentioned “Coca Cola” - Ray had to return to London while on tour in NYC to dub in Cherry Cola to get BBC airplay. The Kinks were banned from performing in the US between 1965-69 by American Federation of Musicians for rude behavior.

    Musically and lyrically, one of the greatest songs in history. One of the reasons some of us think Ray Davies is the best composer in popular music. The video was incredibly audacious and was considered too much by the BBC to be broadcasted. There are few examples of such a political outcome so explicit in the sixties and even later. They were the Sleaford Mods of the times. I was sure you would be touched by the message. Keep on exploring the Kinks in their 66-70 period, it's full of masterpieces you will love.

This is a great track and I bet the film did inspire Madness, who had some serious songs, the point of which often got overlooked because of the light hearted videos. Good to hear that the channel is a positive outlet for you guys, keep going and I hope it grows.

    I haven't heard this song for years, but it's still a great song. I obviously didn't get the message as a teenager, but it struck home today , especially as times are hard again right now.
    I think you're definitely right about the more money you have , the greedier and more underhand you are.
    It makes me laugh that my neighbours all think I'm rich because I drive a Jag , own my own home and have a business. I have bills just like anyone else but I'm always willing to help.

    The British ruled classic rock. Especially the 1960's. On a slightly related note, you two would like the recent album by the Damned, Darkadelic. They're known as the UK's first punk band (by a couple weeks). But over the decades have added goth, psychedelic rock, glam, pop and humor. And their singer is the original rock vampire, Dave (Transyl)Vanian

    This song reminds me of my very first real drum kit and the time I'd started to learn to play the drums (in 1980), as it was included in the 'Best of The Kinks' cassette tape my Big Bro had given me, and it was one of the first things I'd played along to 😊

    I am glad there are a lot of knowledgeable Kinks fans on this channel. Great suggestion. This song was a B side on a flop single but a staple of their live shows. These guys were very underappreciated early on in their career because they were banned from the US from 1966-1969. You've hit many of their best spngs but you still have several great ones left. 20th Century Man and Celluloid Heroes 2 masterpieces you must hit eventually. Thanks for all the Kinks and God bless the Kinks (A British phrase that began in the 60s and 70s)

    This was WAAAAYYYY before Monty Python. Martin Feldman and Spike Milligan were the Python's main heroes and influencers - check them out.
    Incidentally, so was Lazy Sunday by the Small Faces, where you also saw a Python influence. Python were great, but they weren't as ground-breaking as Americans think.

      We're 70's kids from Canada. Around midnight on CBC, when we were growing up, we would first watch Benny Hill, and after that, Monty Python. We grew up on their comedy, and I guess that's as far back in comedy history we ventured.

    • @timarmstrong3251
      @timarmstrong3251 Год назад

      @@hanierfamily Thanks for your reply. I don't want to decry the Python's - I loved them and they WERE ground-breaking. But they were the culmination of a British comedy tradition that began with the towering, if sometimes baffling, genius that was Spike Milligan. The Pythons adored and respected Spike to the extent of giving him a cameo in Life of Brian. Milligan created 'The Goons', starring himself and Peter Sellars, which begat 'I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again' (a radio show on which John Cleese and Graham Chapman (amongst others - notably the three 'Goodies') were huge stars as writers and performers.) Marty Feldman and his writing partner Barry Took were pursuing a similar mad-cap path and Jones, Palin and Idle were up and coming writers. Spike's insane 'Q' TV series was also around pre-Python. 'At Last the 1948 Show' featured many of these writers/performers.
      This stuff is all worth a watch as is the wonderful tragi-comedy of 'Hancock' and 'Steptoe and Son' created by the other giants of British radio and TV comedy, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.
      Thanks for listening :)

      Honestly, it gives us an excuse to put songs on our channel that we already know. We'll compare them to somebody's cover and get the views without breaking our rule of doing only songs we don't know. And, there aren't many others doing it.
