You can pick any one of the Kinks songs and hear something profound and great. Best group ever

Almost forgot. I got into the Kinks because of my older brother who bought the Lola... album. I first saw them in 1973 in the Felt Forum in NYC. The 3rd song they played was Shangri-la which I had never heard before. After hearing that song I knew I'd be listening to the Kinks for life.

Thanks so much for this one. This album was a concept album about a guy named Arthur who lived through WWII and thought life would be great when he got home. Its autobiographical in that Arthur would be Rays father and the album discusses his child leaving England for Australia and that was a major event in young Ray and Daves life when a favored sister moved to Australia. This album is a great album as is the one that followed it Lola vs Powerman and the Money-Go-Round. You guys should do yourselves a favor and check those 2 albums out. It was the peak of the Kinks ability and you guys sure seem to like the Kinks. The late 60s early 70s Kinks were turning out music that far surpassed the Kinks music you grew up with. The 80s stuff was good but the earlier stuff was on another level

Small quibble. The song (and album) is about Ray and Dave's (much-loved) much older brother-in-law Arthur. And yes, he was married to their sister.

Yeah, I was going to say examining this song does need a knowledge of the rest of the Arthur album to understand this part of Arthur's journey.

I think this was the best rock opera ever written. Hands down better than “Tommy”. As a historian Davies takes the listener from the height of the Empire (Victoria) to the welfare state that this song describes.

This is a great song. The Kinks, were brilliant and made such a huge impression on youth culture in their time.
My suggestion today is Eric Clapton, Behind the mask.

I was sure you would find the lyrics of this masterpiece relevant. There are no many in popular music to have dealt in their texts with such apparently trivial problems. This is why Ray Davies is so important. And also because musically, his songs were so melodically great and clever. He would never reach this level of excellence after 1971 unfortunately.

Bands only put songs on one album, thats the way it works. The truth is though that Shangri-la was also on the great compilation album Kinks Kronikles

This song is from their album "Arthur, of The Decline and Fall of the British Empire." "Animal Farm" is from "The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society." Both of these albums are absolutely essential and deserve to be listened to all the way through.

A great critique of the empty suburbanite middle class lifestyle. The world didn’t really accept the reactionary messages Ray Davies was putting out there.

  • @ogam5

.....I sometimes wonder if Ray's albeit-BEATLESQUE nod to "White Room" in "Shangri-La"s refrain, is DELIBERATE - certainly SKEWS with it.....

You like The Kinks but aren’t that familiar with their earlier works? Really?! The heart of their best songs by far is in the 60s, petering off by the 70s to just spotty at best success from then on. Do yourselves a huge favor by checking out the albums “Village Green Preservation Society”, “Something Else”, “Face To Face”, “Kink Kronicles”, “Arthur”, Muswell Hillbillies”….. just sayin’
