- If you're doing this process right after your laptop shut down I would wait a while before you restart it you can also remove the DVD drive to allow extra ventilation to the system if you're not using it.
Sigh... Please DO NOT do what this guy is doing!!! Adding arctic silver will NOT help! You must remove that thick thermal pad over the GPU and shim the heatsink with a copper shim. Then you can use some thermal compound, any type you like on it. The issue is that, that thermal pad acts as an insulator and does not transfer the heat away from the GPU properly. Replacing that with a copper shim epoxied to the heatsink (with compound in the middle) will lower your temps considerably. Also remove that stupid plastic lace stuff covering the fan intake on the bottom plate. Those two mods should get you 10-20 Deg F. cooler. That is what I had to do with my e6410.

The GPU is integrated into the processor. Presumably it is the smaller chip of the two chips on the processor board. That other chip with the thermal pad is the motherboard bridge. It is also where the Intel Management Engine is located on this laptop. So in a sense it is a processor as well.
Hi, Should i also put a copper shim in it for the cpu?. The GPU is NOT integrated into the processor (not in my case). I have an Quadro NVS 3100M
What thickness of shim? You don't want to have one installed that's too think to where you can crack the CPU. 0.3mm good enough? I would be worried about using a 1mm. I would think that is almost too thick.

Linus Tech Tips did a vid showing the results of different methods. The pea, the line, the x, the spiral, spreading compound with your finger, too much compound and not enough compound. The results were 47 C for all of them, except for not enough compound which ran 5 degrees C hotter.
Adding new thermal paste to a layer of old dried out thermal paste, is not a good idea. Go back, use a q-tip and rub that old thermal compound, replacing it with a "dab" of thermal paste. You do not need a lot.
Hi. Nice explanation making it easy for anyone to complete this maintenance task. Just one point I notice the screws holding down the heat sink are numbered 1 through 4. I thinking that this is the order for tightening the fixing screws which follows auto maintenance rules where you tighten diagonally opposite bolts.
Do you screw the heat sink screws back in all the way or just hand tighten?

Thank you. This was very insightful. I have two 6410s, one overheats. Does it also depend on the OS, cuz when I run the overheater on Fedora 25, I can leave it overnight and there's no overheating. The other one which doesn't overheat, runs on 64-bit Win7, and both have 8 GB RAM.
I also put it on one of those slatted flat wood baskets from yesteryear, so more air circulates underneath the unit.
IT tech. & supporter guy here, DO NOT DO what this fellow is telling you. Gonna start by saying, that Artic Silver is a good brand and i'm using it personally on my devices, but adding it to the old dried up compound on the CPU chip is not recommended at all. Next, don't add it to the GPU chip AT ALL, use a thermal pad instead. Lastly hes adding too much in the form, that it's gonna produce more heat and more likely to overheat. Only apply a small drop and smear it on the chip to cover it overall in a thin coat, dripping on the chip and slammin' the heat sink on is an amateur thing to do mate...

I would agree with NOT using thermal paste on the GPU.
This heat sink is designed to cool the GPU using a thermal pad (approximately .8mm thick). This gap between the GPU and cold plate on the heat sink is too wide to use thermal paste effectively.
I have done the same But the Overheating Problem is still there. What can i do further to solved this overheating Issue .
I know this is a very old post, but I got a Dell Latitude E6410 laptop which was ready to be recycled and I got it see if can fix it. I tried thermal paste, but it didn't work. The GPU got over 100C. The last thing I tried is using to pennies. Clean them as best as you can. Here is what I did.
1. Add a small amount of thermal paste on the GPU on the motherboard.
2. Place one penny on the GPU.
3, Add a bit more thermal paste onto the penny.
4. Put the heat sink bad in place, tighten the screws.
5. I used Open Hardware Monitor program to monitor temps. It's open source and works with a lot of hardware.
I also did the same thing to the area this guy pries up at 1:15. If you look at the motherboard, there is another chip that mine had no thermal paste.

@@Shotiv889 Yes it did. I am using the laptop to answer your question. My laptop never overheated since. It has been several months. If you are going to do this, make sure your penny is very clean and use thermal past on each side of the penny. Just a dab is all it takes.
I tried literally everything from cheap thermal paste to expensive ones and none of them worked, no matter what I used or how much thermal paste I applied laptop didnt want to even start it shuts down after 10 seconds. Then i read your comment and decided to try this method and believe me or not it worked lol. The processor temp is a bit high tho always around 100c but it worked.
@@dzenishadzic664 Make sure the penny is very clean before putting it in place. If the is room use two pennies stacked together. Also you might to put a penny on the CPU. The two heatsinks re one unit. It might help absorb some heat. My GPU. Is around 70c but the laptop never overheats.
But as I am using it right now with no programs opened, both graphic card temperature and processor are around 100 degrees celsius so its kinda overheating lol but this is the farest I could come with it otherwise If i put thermalpaste it wont even start running.

dude starts out the video saying he didn't put enough on last time, and then says he had way too much on. then he proceeds to put 10x more than he really needs during the video. my latitude is over heating so i am looking at some youtube videos to see any tricks or mods people use. if i didn't know anything about thermal compound my laptop would probably be destroyed following his instructions.

I think your laptop is overheating becuase your applying too much thermal paste the more you put on its not gonna cool more, it will actually trap heat and overheat more then before what you need to do is get some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip and CLEAN that processor top as if your cleaning a hookers vag. but when your done cleaning the CPU and GPU use a ceramic based thermal paste becuase other pastes can actually conduct electricity and that's bad for the GPU, but put a pea sized drop of thermal paste on the GPU and for the cpu

OMG, do not, I repeat, "DO NOT REPLACE" the thermal pad on the GPU with just thermal paste, doing so will cause your laptop to rapidly overheat. A copper shim must be placed between the GPU and heatsink.
your laptop shut down, that press F1 thing pops up when you restart.. same experience after i clean and repaste my laptop.. bad decision.
I have the same equipment as you, I just cleaned and replaced the thermal paste of the processor, I realized that the gpu only had the Thermal Pad, but no Thermal Paste, I put a little on it and the temperatures got worse, my problem was the gpu rolled at 99°C after I put the thermal paste on it, now it does not drop below 104°C.
I’m currently using ceramic compound which works great but they just came out with a liquid metal thermal compound and a graphite pad That you can use over and over And both of those products are supposed to be much better
Liquid metal can short something, how to apply it ?
my temp was 65C.. normal use.. CPU at 10% .... now running 35C.. but i also washed the heatsink and cleaned the fan!!.. whoohoo
Maybe a copper shim on the GPU.

please excuse my english.. I'm tired of my heat problems on mine E6410, I tried placing a lot of compound, a little bit of compound i even tried therminal pads, nothing is helping. My Fan is clean i bought a cooling pad for my laptop.. I can work on my laptop now but the moment i connect it to a external display my GPU goes to 90C.. can someone please help me?? the problem is my GPU but how do I fix this
If you're using a white thermal compound switch to the silver thermal compound try to keep it on the chip itself only and not around the chip if you've done that and that's not working. Try copper shim thermal pads you can get them on eBay 10 for a few dollars. Hope this helps

I have this laptop, It was running hot all the time, no matter what you do. The main problem is that there isnt fan control option in the Bios menu, so I desided to modefye the laptop. I connected my fan directly to the USB port and put small resistor to reduse fan spinning. Now my temperatute are around 40-45 C. I think this is success.
you're a dumbass.... if you woulda held fn and shift and typed 15324 and then held fn and r you can manually change your fan speed to whatever rpm and disable the auto thermal control dumbass...
Ive tried but this doesn't work on my laptop.
My understanding is that Dell removed the thermal control screen from later Dell Laptops. So while fn+shift 15324 would work, fn+R would not. Also the thermal control screen was only meant for internal Dell diagnostics. The settings didn't hold after you rebooted. It was a great place to go if you wanted to test your cooling fan.

step 1:
remove heatsink (Optional>clean it, may be clogged up )
Step 2:
clean the surface area of the cpu,gpu and heatsink with alcohol
Step 3:
Apply Thermal paste. (non conductive thermal compound)
too little will overheats
too much will overheats
try a X mark or drop a pea size amount will do.
and Voila! Done this to my e6410ATG and good as new.
How did u install win 10 on it i have the same laptop but i cant install win 8 or 8.1or 10 on it
I did the free upgrade but you can always install that hard drive on another computer and put windows 10 on it then put it back in the laptop then do all your updates again once it’s back in your laptop.

saludos amigo tengo una laptop de esa pero se calienta demasiado y se apaga por el sobre calentamiento ya le ise el mantenimiento la monitoreo com cam el cpu marca una temperatura muy buena pero la GPU sobrepasa 100 grado e cho de todo pero no logro solucionar el problema agradeceria que puedas ayudarme

I don't have problems. Windows 10 can under clock as much as we want deep down in a power setting and Linux can't run interesting 3D games anymore. I did repaste 10 or more processors lately which help up to 20 degrees. Stuff some extra copper on those thingies that looks like copper and drill some holes for more.

+adri adi if it's still overheats and you probably didn't put enough thermal compound it doesn't hurt to put it on the GPU as well don't listen to the other comments I buy graphics cards that are bad sometimes and I'm able to fix some simply by changing the thermal compound

Done what you did and it lasted only for a few seconds then shuts down again. Didnt help.
@@nicholusify ummm he applied thermal paste over thermal paste that is not gonna help first you have to completely remove the old thermal paste then apply new thermal paste
@@nicholusify That's because he never removed the old thermal paste, plus he replaced the thermal pad with just thermal paste which is a big no no. A easy and good fix is to get a pre 80's penny(solid copper where newer penny's are copper coated zinc) and smooth it down, apply thermal compound to both side and place it in between the GPU and heat shink. Same thing happened to the used e6410 I got, thought it was just the thermal paste, than realized their the GPU originally had a thermal pad, use a smoothed copper penny in place of the thermal pad and the over heating problem was solved.

My laptop was caked in thermal paste and didn’t have an issue before. I thought it was a previous owner that did it, I changed the paste and had shutdowns like mad because of over temps. I added more thermal paste and managed to get open hardware monitor installed and saw it running between 45c and 80c loading windows 10, I’m not sure what it was before but wish I didn’t bother spending 15-20 mins cleaning the cpu carefully and fearfully
(I’ve noticed as well. One of my cores is hotter than another one, core 1 is at 44c and core 2 is at 36c. Both max and min and current values show this difference so think there’s an uneven cooler or it’s lifted slightly)
GPU is at 65c as well. Reading comments looks like a shim on it is in order as there isn’t any screws to make it tight enough and ensure it’s fully contacted

@@Shotiv889 yeah. I just added more thermal paste, I’ve never known a laptop need so much before! Must be why it’s caked in it from the factory. Else you’ll have overheating

yo lo solucione asi , debido a que no es perfecto el empalme de la gpu con el dispador le ponen un pad termico , pero este se seca lo que hago es poner pasta cooler master de silicona y mezclar el pad termico con pasta y este se puede reutilizar , lo siguiente es cambiar la pasta termica del procesador , ahora desactivar la opcion en el bios que dice turbo boss o verificar que este instalado correctamente su driver turbo boss y eso es todo sin el turbo boss funciona perfectamente y no rebasa los 60 grados a tope saludos desde mexico df
Podrías explicarme un poco más a fondo? Tengo este equipo para uso de trabajo y el problema es que tiene temperaturas de 90 a 95 grados

Amigo mi termal pad está un poco roto solo puse un poco de pasta termica en el y mis temperaturas aumentarán demasiado, que puedo hacer? Debo reemplazar el Thermal Pad y si es así cuál debería conseguir?
@@Danielle-zx3uo hola lo tienes que amazar hasta que se integre la pasta con el pad , quedará como una plastilina, lo colocas y distribuyen bien y con eso debe mejorar , si quieres bajar más la temperatura entra al bosque f12 o f2 y desactiva una casilla que diga Intel turbo boss con eso queda bien

DO NOT fail to clean up the old paste first. Kinda like painting a car without sanding the primer. You get out how much time you put in.
you need to clean old pasta from heatsink, is not just put new pasta, old )pasta is not good must be cleaned complete

too much thermal paste bro. That shit should be paper thin. Its only there to hold the heat sink in place. It actually hinders heat transfer. especially when so thick it just makes it worse.
What in the actual fuck are you talking about. Thermal paste enhances the thermal transfer to the heat sink, go ahead and run your computer without thermal paste and tell me how that works for you fuckstick....

I'm considering to move to Asus but my first experience with this brand was not so good...
ALL laptops have problems with heat...ALL and dells have the list problems cause they have the best ventilation system.1)dell and apple 2)toshiba lenovo 3)acer 4)sony vaio and hp dont make the list they are crap

purchasing older business grade dell laptops 2-3 years after they were purchased is a great idea. i spent 325 dollars on a dell laptop with an i74800mq, 250 gb ssd, 8 gb ram, windows 10 pro, and a hd8790m gpu. that is considerably more powerful than any laptop available right now at twice that price point. it would take at minimum 1000 dollars to find a laptop that compared to it. might find one with a 1050ti or 1050 around 800 dollars but it is going to have a much cheaper and slower cpu.
