RUSH Ghost Rider 2002 VAPOR TRAILS | REACTION
Rush Reaction
The fact that he had Nothing left to lose…so Nothing can stop him now is really deep… or is it that Nothing was what was left in him and that is what is stopping him now. Neil…always with the double meanings. Love it when the drums snap in on this track.
If memory serves me right (it must be nigh on 20 years since I read Ghost Rider) "nothing can stop you now" is something Peart's dying wife said to him in reference to his motorcycle wanderlust constantly being in conflict with his (and hers)wish for him to spend as much time as possible with his family, particularly since he already spent so much time away from home on tour for all of their life together.
One of my favorite tracks off this album.
This was one of the tracks that was more difficult for me to get into the remixed version. It took several listens but 10 years later I truly appreciate what Bottrill did on this. Especially the different feel of the kick later in the song.. really gives it a but of a punch.
You got to give it to Rush. You can always tell it's Rush, but they were willing to change it up on every single album they ever put out. Creativity abound. Not keeping churning out the same safe sound over and over like bands like AC/DC.
What a difference between this and the original! “Ghost Rider” was used a song title and then adopted for the book. The song itself captures that strange mix of confusion and determination, the shock and the urgency, the endless fog and the promise of some kind of clarity at the end of it all. Neil’s one and only goal was to just keep riding and you can really feel that in this song. Geddy’s vocal range sounds pretty good for a forty-nine-year-old who had pushed his voice to its limits for decades. One of the more effective tracks on the album.
A bit of a factoid-Geddy cried during the recording.
Read the book if you haven't. It's the most emotional book I've ever read. Neil really puts his heart out. It taught me to appreciate life a lot more. Be sure to have Kleenex ready.
A literal description of Neil's post tragedies journey. There is more than a little Tragically Hip tone to this one.
I have just discovered the Hip! Better late than never, right? They have some truly awesome songs. I’m kinda addicted now to “Fifty Mission Cap.”
@@MrDuneedon love the Hip, Wheat Kings is my fave but 50th mission Cap is great as well. 😊
Hmmm. There is a hip color here
Now that you mention it…
Nobody is missing the keyboards. I like the albums with keyboards, but I like the albums without as well. One without was welcome.
Also Justin (THE VIBE) Panariello! 😁😆😂🤣🤘🏻😎
The book is a really good read. For such an incredibly private person, Neil gave us an awful lot of his mind, his thoughts, his struggles and loneliness, joys and anger, through his words. Through lyrics and books, we actually learned quite a lot about this particular introvert. He just needed to do it and share it on his own terms. This song is one of my Rush faves and yes, these lyrics echo his experiences as detailed in the book.
I really like this one as well. It really gives you the feel of Neil's journey.
I was so lucky to see them play this on the Vapor Trails Tour. They didn’t play it every night. It was such an emotional moment.
Lyrics….this song and The Garden are Neil’s best, most personal, most profound.
The opening is so Tragically Hip, it's one of the many reasons why I love this track. It's very personal to the band, RIP Neil you are so missed; after a live performance of this song Neil breaks both his drum sticks so they could never be used again. I absolutely love this song and the way it is performed, no question.
Never thought about the tragically hip comparison but I totally see it, reminds a bit of emergency!
@@erikboris5029 I also get a little bit of Blow at High Dough. Cheers!
@@WeDanceWestie For sure!
The words matter here. I didn’t get them all off the bat, but…. This one, Secret Touch and Earthshine which apparently came from people in space looking at the earth as it would shine. They got me in a whole new way as a Rush fan. 😢❤😊
Great song. Always makes my eyes water up.
This is one of my favorites not just on this album but that they've ever done. I liked it on first listen but after hearing it several more times it hit me that it was one of their all time best. I'm glad you liked it, and really think it'll grow even more with further listens, like pretty much all of this album.
We're coming up on what I consider the RELATIVELY SPEAKING the weakest party of the album with the next three songs. If I was making the decision to eliminate the songs to get this down to 10 total like they had original planned it would be these. That didn't mean they aren't good, just that I don't like them as much as the rest. However, the next song is one that a lot of purple like, so maybe it'll resonate with you more than me.
On the bright side, once you get past them, the next 5 are, IMO, one of their all time best 5 song streaks. But opinions vary of course.
Keep up the excellent work reacting! Your efforts are appreciated!
This is one of my favorites from VT, the book is great
Powerful yet catchy song. You've heard it's about Neil's recovery road trip. Not only was he grieving the loss of his family, but he'd taken to hard drugs to numb the pain. A lengthy motorcycle holiday was part of the healing process. When they played this song for the Live at Rio DVD, Neil broke a stick, he was hitting the drums so hard. You can see him snap it through the middle to finish it off after the song is done.
Actually it was only one stick that he snapped, having watched the video again, not both of them as in my original post :)
I must admit that this song did benefit from the remix a lot. However, I still say that on the whole, the original mix of the album served the songs better. But I definitely have no huge complaints about the remix. They did a good job on it.
I have a suggestion.
You've probably listened to all of VT by now. But a good experiment would be to go back and relistten to Peacable Kingdom (the remix), and then immediately after listen to the original mix of Peacable Kingdom. That song I think is the best example of how the two mixes contrast and compare, and why some like the original mix while many agree the remix had to happen. I'd be interested to hear your analysis of the two, especially knowing this was the result of the whole "loudness war" happening back in the early 2000s etc.
One of my favorite Rush album, and my favorite tune on this album. Lyrics and music are really connected here. And this bass…
A very solid song. It's musically interesting and feels contemplative, even a little bit haunting. It's a bit different, which, interestingly, is typical for them.
This album just really reflects Neil’s state of mind. Really great music! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
I have been a drummer for 45 years. I am nothing special. I have worked very hard to be good at what I do. I have played in a trio on and off since high school. I'm 60 years old now. When I watch and listen to rush reaction videos, more often than not, the reactors say ... Where have I been? ... What has been so much fun for me in watching your discography reactions is that I agree with you most of the time. I am not ashamed to say that I am a rush head. I don't find your takes offensive. I find them to be very honest. As I said we line up most of the time. Having been a fan since the first time I heard corrective steel as a 10th grader, I totally understand how geddy's voice needs to grow on a new listener. It's hit or miss. If you are a player of an instrument, such as yourself, you can appreciate the musicianship. Suddenly over time Geddy's voice , like it or not, becomes such a huge part of their sound. Without him and his voice, rush, would not be rush. It's the total package. I have played in many different scenarios from recording to playing in live music theater. My heart still lies with the power trio.!
Keep up the good work. I look forward to you daily.
This song is ALL about the lyrics!
My excuse is I've got old ears! But i don't think they messed with this
much on the remastered. Geddy plays cool bass on peaceable kingdom 👍
Apart from "One Little Victory," the remix album is vastly different than the original release. "Ghost Rider" is the musical narrative of Neil's healing road....
RIP Professor.... 🙏🙏
Having read the book, I can totally relate to every line in the lyrics. The beginning of this song sounds like an empty bar at midnight with a small band quietly jamming in the corner. The live version on Rush in Rio is remarkable. You can literally feel the band rallying around Neil as the song goes on and the momentum builds. Cheers!
Neil breaks and snaps a stick at the end of the Rio performance: ruclips.net/video/TebbeMpflh4/видео.html The last time that song ever gets played and symbolically closing the book.
My favorite track on the album and definitely one of my favorite all time
Justin, I'm glad you liked Ghost Rider. I'm just waiting until you get to Earthshine. Peaceable Kingdom is deep.
Love this song!!
This is my first listen to this album as well. So far this is my favorite track. Not just on this album, but probably since Show Don’t Tell on Presto!
Love Show Don't Tell, but Dreamline is not chopped liver. One of their best live songs too.
Glad you're liking the album so far, you might like One little Victory more on the original, much better IMO
Another song that originally I thought was just OK. But once I got the remix, I was like yeah this is a good song.
Favorite song on album
Great song great reaction.
I love One Little Victory, Ceiling Unlimited(name was adopted from the Weather Channel), Peaceable Kingdom, and really all the rest. However the two stand out tracks, especially live for me are this one and Secret Touch. Live is super bad ass. Like I said if you do Live in Rio, pare it down to the VT tracks, favorites and not heard live yet. Several gems and performances from that record.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎹
This was an innovative song for me. It was the first RUSH song I did not like. That includes Cinderella Man and Rivendell. :D
Justin. ,,, You need to do a reaction of The Boys in Rio documentary. There are many songs from Vapor Trails without VOCALS. its really good, and you can hear those songs off the album , raw
I think I need to replace my copy of VT with this remix. I wasn't a fan of this song before, but it does sound pretty good here. Geddy's bass has a nice springiness that I don't remember, and the different tracks just have more separation. My main quibble -- and this is the case with a lot of later Rush -- is that the arrangements don't have the inventiveness of the earlier days. There's barely a bridge here, and the chorus is the same changes as the verses. It just sort of rolls along without much of an arc.
Yes! To me the remix version is much better. You can actually hear the intricacies of the songs.
I like much of the original mix better. This song though, is better in this mix.
"I'm not going to pay attention to lyrics...". 'Nobody's Hero' has entered the chat... 🙂 (just a friendly razzing)
HELL YEAH 👍🏾😃!
Geddy was, in fact, listening to Tool a lot. So that's what you hear throughout this record.
I thought it was Alex who was heavily into Tool at this time and brought that influence? Remember reading that in a few different interviews. Maybe Geddy was as well?
Justin (I don’t pay attention to the lyrics) Panariello! Your new name!
They should have remixed Vapor Trails. Should only have remastered
Asking geddy to play bass, c'mon... he's playing pinball with one hand and drinking beer with the other, oh and singing 👍
youre gonna hear that a lot from me on this record...
@@JustinPanariello Yep don't doubt that for a second jp 😉
While I like most of the individual parts of this, somehow the overall song isn't catching me like earlier RUSH did.
There were two parts in this remix version that disappointed me. One was Neil's soft symbol hits right before "Sunrise in the mirror...". It was muted on the remix, and I felt robbed of that moment! The other part was the bridge "Just an escape artist..." They killed that section in the remix! WTF? However, the most improved section in the remix was Geddy's vocal harmonies on "Shadows on the Road Behind ... Nothing can stop you now..." That part was WAY better! Gave me goosebumps I didn't feel in the original.
I'm thinking this should've been the last song on the album, dealing with Neil's problems, but then what do you do with 'Out of the Cradle'?
Are you talking about what Geddy is playing on bass vs If he is playing bass? Like he is playing low guitar type parts vs typical bass stuff?
i'll be talking more on this throughout this album....
Not a fav at first, but has grown on me through the years. Just play the bass for f-sakes. Peaceable Kingdom is great.
The worst piece of advice Geddy got was being told he could sing "high" again in his mid 50s.
Yeah it was definitely a misfire. I can't fully get on board with this song, like many VT songs, because his vocal lines are awkward, sort of whiney, and the harmony lines often just grate on my ears.
But what are you going to do in the later years. Sting dropped his voice to a lower range and got all whispery, and that's just as annoying to me.
@@katskillz True that about Sting.
His vocals sound fantastic here. Haters gonna hate! lol
I know the remixed version is 'better', it's just that I listened to the original version so GD much that I spend the entire listen of the remix hearing the differences and it's too distracting to really enjoy.
I kinda get that. I'm constantly going, "Oh, I like this part better on the remix. Oh, I like the old recording better here. This part's so much better. Oh, they screwed this part up ...." hahaha Makes me want to splice parts together, some original. Some remixed.
@@mikemurphymagic agree 100 percent - remix the remix! 🤣
There were two parts in this song where the remix disappointed me. One was Neil's soft symbol hits right before "Sunrise in the miror...". It was muted on the remix, and I felt robbed of that moment! The other part was the bridge "Just an escape artist..." They killed that section in the remix. The only improved section I thought was Geddy's harmonies on "Shadows on the Road Behind...Nothing can stop you now..." That part was WAY better! Gave me goosebumps I didn't feel in the original.
I don't like the remixed versions
Nice song but not one of my favorites.
