I think I can explain why Alex has a mic. He *wants* to sing. The techs say “fine, can do”. They pipe it straight into his ear monitors. Everyone else hears “clearly Geddy”. Alex hears Alex. Everyone is happy. 😂
They are all rocking out in the breakdown, but there’s one moment where they cut to a shot of Neil thru a crease in his drums and his whole kit is just rocking with the groove he is laying down. Gets me every time. We are simpatico on this one.😊
I really like this song and this was a banger performance!!! 💖💖💖. That outtro was 🔥🔥🔥 I love when the guys have fun on stage. Their enjoyment playing together comes out in their music.
😂Alex again, is so good he’s singing Geddy’s background vocal’s EXACTLY like the album.👍👌Especially if he’s the one triggering it with the pedal, the vocalizationing of it makes sense, with that little Zeppelin riff.😂
Yeah, this is definitely a top 20 all-time Rush song for me. Tremendous marriage of lyrics and music. I prefer the Rio version to this one, but then, that applies to almost everything on the Rio live album. They caught lightning in a bottle back then. But this was really solid. Geddy's vocals were still very serviceable, and he goes crazy on the bass.
They cut like that to annoy people. Very similar to how a person will keep putting off a certain task. Like as a random example, let’s say we were waiting for someone to review clockwork angels. Again, totally random example. 😀😉
That outro instrumental is 🔥! My favorite live version of this song. Also, I will NOT compete for your comments section videos. I am a bland, boring human…and a Dad. That’s why I love Rush! 😂😂
The way out Is the way in You can never break the chain There is never love without pain A gentle hand, a secret touch on the heart You can never break the chain Life is a power that remains A healing hand, a secret touch on the heart A gentle hand, a secret touch on the heart
Someone may have said this already, but Alex really is singing. You can hear him in the venue, supported by the triggered BVs. He’s never audible on the DVDs, though. Not sure why. He’s not an amazingly great singer, but he’s fine on BVs.
Always liked this one, sounded especially good at the first show back in Hartford after Neil"s Return, hard to believe it will be 21 years ago exactly tomorrow
The Alex singing thing - I think it possibly shows they had different goals in their live show vs live release. In the arena they wanted as much live sound to come from the stage as possible supported by the triggered samples (he could clearly be heard in the arena in the shows I saw) - for the DVD release they went for the best sounding. Alex’s live BVs were ‘fine’, but prerecorded studio Geddy always going to be better.
More cool pinch harmonics guitar....Alex credits Rory Gallagher as his influence in 74'. Also, young ax men, take note of Alex's sweet rhythm playing at the end of this tune....great comment @clemlowes9417, and I bet "JPan" will acknowledge your comment because a solar eclipse is the rare event when there's no Earthshine in sight! 🌘😂😂
Great ending. 😄 Re: Alex's singing, I sometimes wonder if Alex's mic is feeding to a sampler loaded with Geddy's voice, so that Alex can sing whatever he wants and it comes out as Geddy (also with pitch correction, probably). Dunno... Others say they've been to shows and hear Alex singing, but I've also been to a lot and have never heard Alex. It's always clearly been Geddy.
I also wondered if it was some sort of microphone wizardry but no, Geddy has said in interviews that the backing vocals are triggered by foot pedal or keyboard
The musical goofing at the end for this one always puts me on edge, it sounds so so close to falling apart. I think because its an extremely rare moment when they are intentionally playing against each other in a syncopated way, then bringing it back together, back and forth like that... that's just not their forte that's more of a jazz or latin thing rhythmically.
Alex is essentially triggering that backing vocal. They try to reproduce their songs as close to the original as possible and that's how they did it for this song.
All right. I don’t know if anyone has said this before, but if you’re at the show, you hear Alex singing. He did real backup vocals for forever, even after the backing tracks were brought into the live show. But they completely cut him out of the mix on these live releases, probably because he’s not a great singer. I still say “Good job Alex” with no irony.
Alex has a mic because he gets bored with his dual output guitars, ABY switch, 40+ switch controller, wah and volume pedals, and 13-note organ pedal controller. 😂🍁🎸
Yeah, I wish they would have just gone with Alex singing backup vocals live...I get that it's almost all Geddy on the records and Alex isn't the greatest singer, but it does seem to be a strange choice.

Everyone is happy. 😂
That's true-- Alex's vocal-->autotuned-->harmonies-->Geddy's voice.
Love that last minute, Alex is on fire with those blues cords and Geddy funk!😊
Bringing in a little levity towards the end is cool. See Neil smile while behind his kit is about as rare as a solar eclipse. 🌘
Great song. I really like this live performance.
That song is better live. Love it.
You have just made me realise how cool this tour was. My mind is old and pickled. This tour was soooo long ago 👍😀
Love it when I get Neil action!! Great extended version! Enjoyed that!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!

Love it when they have fun like that at the end. :) Shows them as they probably are much of the time when together. :)
I went to 4 shows on the Sn&A tour and Al was singing. You could definitely hear him in the live shows.
Wow Geddy nailed those high notes at 3:03!
Good job singing Alex!
Justin(I SAW CIRCUMSTANCES LIVE BACK IN 1978)Panariello 🤣😂🤣😂😝😝😝🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥
This was Kick Ass! So let's here the next 1. Right! 😊
Circumstances live was another amazing one !
I really like this song and this was a banger performance!!!
💖💖💖. That outtro was 🔥🔥🔥

Best song on Vapor Trails
Geddy also used a lyric monitor in later years, located on the stage front and to his left.

If I remember the backstage videos you did...that red bass is a special Circumstances only tune.
That Vapor Trails album to me was just totally high-energy killer and I've always been surprised fans haven't been all over it
Geddy says: I CAN MAKE NEIL SMILE 😀

I've always thought this was one of the strongest songs on the VT release.
Old school here but this one does rock live big-time...
This is my most liked song of S n A and Vapor Trails...only a couple from Clockwork I like better...Secret Touch sizzles live!🤘
Neil doesn’t like jamming so much, they were almost there…10 seconds more 😂
You don’t hear Neil play rimshots very often but definitely fits this song!

Looks like roasted chicken 🍗 for dinner!

Only the Barbies can hear Alex sing😂
If you think this was funny and that Neil smiled for this, just wait until you see Spirit of Radio 😂🐔

Btw, thanks for the shoutout, Justin. 🎉

And people say S&A beats VT. What song on S&A tops this one? None.
The editing is non compos mentis.
Sometimes I cringe hearing Geddy go into his falsetto, sorry.
