As an owner of the original and the newer version for years now I can verify that the new ones do not rust! My old one is super rusty but the new ones I have been using for a long time now and no rust. I use mine all the time in my everyday carry.

Those are pans usually used for makeup - I have some. If I use them for paint, I coat them with clear nail polish and let them dry overnight before filling with paint.

I've been using these for about a year, and I'm REALLY happy with them. Because I use artist quality paint, the palettes actually hold enough paint for a two-week vacation with the larger size (is that A5?) sketchbook and plenty of paint left over. I have both sizes of Art Toolkits, and they are GREAT for grab-and-go painting days.
And I like the palettes so much that I now have FOUR of them with different configurations.
I really enjoyed your review. Thank you!

I'm obsessed with travel palettes... I guess I'll add this one to my list lol. One good thing about quarantine is that I have more time to paint.... one of the bad things is that I have too much time to impulse buy pretty things online.....

I have both sizes of the Art Toolkit and I love them! I’ve had the large one for a couple of years and it is in great condition, no rust at all. The pans hold a surprising amount of paint and I have not had to refill them yet. I take one or the other everywhere I go and I love the flexibility they provide. I use the binder clips to attach the palette to the sketchbooks so all I have to hold onto is the book itself. I LOVE this product!!

I've had the Art Toolkit since December of 2018 and I use it almost daily! I really don't use the pocket palette that often as I have a really nice compact palette I like to use, but it's still a nice design. The Toolkit itself is really well made and the big feature I want to point out is the zipper. It's really robust and can stand up to a lot of abuse. It's usually the first thing to go and in this case it's a really well made case. It fits a moleskine perfectly, but not a lot of other A5 size books will fit.

I have a $13 Lihit Lab Teffa Pen Case - Book Style (7.5" X 4" X 2") that I found at JetPens that I can fit all of my travel gear into. Small 20 pan travel palette, 4 travel brushes, a tube of gouache, small moleskin, brush pens, mechanical pencil, micron pens, (holds about 9 pens/pencils) clips, a pencil sharpener, 2 types of eraser, extra leads and ink cartridges.

I've used the art toolkit supplies for some time now and love them! (the syringe is great for filling the waterbrush, and a tiny mister can be purchased to wet one's pan paints). (the loops on the outside of the cover can hold carbiners, which can attach to a backpack, for example). The great thing about this creation is to make getting out into the outdoors to paint plein air possible, while keeping larger supplies at home. Having purchased the extra mixing wells should help you with water rolling off the edges! Another idea might be to hold your palette on top of your rag/paper towel used for wiping off your brush. That would sop up excess palette water!

Thanks for the nice review! I have used my tine pocket palette for many years and love it! The only drawback is that the pans rust and that has affected some of my yellow paints, they have become miscoloured, the other colours seem ok. Perhaps if they made enamelled pans this problem would go away, or thin plastic ones with a thin magnetic strip under to conectct to the magnet in the bottom. Nice to se the sewn case. I think you can use the straps on the outside to latch on a larger strap to carry the case cross body or over the shoulder, or attach to a larger bag. I use a Lihit lab A5 case, it has a pocket on the outside where the palette and some pencils and a fountainpen brush fits very well and the sketchbook ( Hahnemule watercolourbook A5) fits well inside. I really liked the white mixing pans, I might get some of those, great w the white background to see the mixes.

I clip the largest mixing pans to either side of the lid to expand the mixing area, which then frees up space in the palette area for more colors. You can use the mini clips in the kit to do that. I got the idea from Cathy Johnson - she did something similar with a mini paint box she made from a candy tin and an extra lid.

The contradicting thing about this Art Toolkit is that the palette is tiny slim and super compact while the art tool case is bulky without offering any particular advantage in number of items that it can hold. If you put the same number of art tools in any cheap pouch ( those acrylic with a zipper) they will occupy the one third of space of this case in any sketching bag.

I use the Pocket Palette with the Pentel waterbrushes for small sketches in a pocket size sketchbook. Very quick and easy setup with a sketch a day projects. The sketches are made up of one to two subjects. I wouldn't use the palette for larger sketchbooks though...not enough mixing room.

When I started using my own homemade business card palette I found I had plenty of paint to do a month of a mix of sketch and wash and regular style paintings. Now that I am using Maria's version with the small pans I find I have a lot more freedom to paint because weight is no longer a factor. I will say one thing about attaching the smaller art tool kit via loops to a bag. Be aware of people around you at all times! My art tool kit was stolen off of my main bag by a thief. I recovered the badly damaged tool kit bag but none of its contents except the ruler and a single pen. I now use a small but strong locker lock when attaching it to any bag. Very expensive mistake to make.

A good indicator for their pricing is the fact that on their site they try to sell you a syringe ("for refilling your waterbrush") for a bloated $2.50. Such an article shouldn't have to cost more than fifth of that...
