too cool! I had the great joy and blessing of attending a talk and demo by Maria a few weeks ago in Port Townsend. It was in the small gallery of the Port Townsend School of Art and a small room was filled with her work. I would think paintings of lots of snow would be uninteresting but hers have so much life in them. She shared several of her sketchbooks, one full of some space thing launch she was invited to by NASA. what a cool connection Steve!

What a truly interesting interview with a young lady that shows the power that is wielded with some watercolors, a brush and some paper. Maria Coryell-Martin shows that art can be SO much more than a just a pretty picture! It can educate and open eyes to some very serious issues of our time like entire ecosystems disappearing from Earth due to global warming. WoW, what an inspiring person Maria is!!!

I bought myself one of these for my birthday this year and it was the best gift I could give myself. My pocket palette is perfect for line and wash work in my sketchbook. I use a bigger palette at home, but these little pocket numbers are ingenious and mine never leaves my bag.
I have been using her pocket palette for years. I just love them. So much that I carry 4 of them in my Watercolor Kit EDC. They are so light weight. Also they are great gift ideas for people just getting into watercolor - I have given a set away with Daniel Smith colors --

Thanks Brian. Yeah her site offers more pan sizes than some knockoffs you'll find on Etsy. Hers are stainless steel too. A real plus for resisting rust.

What an interesting life Maria has already led and what a wonderful voice she is for both science expeditions and art! Just today, on the way home, I listened to poetry combined with space and space exploration. I sense a "movement" here and since I am a fan of both the arts and the sciences, I love this approach! Maybe proving to girls (and women) that they can enjoy both fields of study simultaneously will help more females pursue careers or, at least, pursue an interest in the sciences! I can't find the right words to say what I want here but I so appreciate her involvement with underprivileged girls and their education! (I like her stuff too 😊). Thanks for the introduction.
What a wonderful interview. Maria has had an incredible life and then sharing and inspiring others, especially young kids. 🥰 I have little misters and never thought about including them when I head outdoors. Great idea! Watching this, I realized I have too many excuses when it comes time for my art and what a waste that is. Videos like these keep me present. Thank you for that!

Amazingly, looking for an empty pallette to store my newly bought M. Graham and Daniel Smith paints in, I stumbled across Maria's shop just a couple of days ago and wondered about her and her practical and easthetically beautiful pallettes. I do not like plastic pallettes at all and we have far too much of it on our planet as it is, and would I have to buy more of it for my paints? I was so happy with her solution. Fascinating interview, fascinating woman, and kudos to her for her service work to others, both the environment and young people. The irony is this was recorded in 2019. I am watching all these videos in sequence from the beginning, so as I watch these from 2019, I am so aware of how everyone’s lives are going to change when COVID hits in 2020. It’s peculiar being “back in time” so to speak, and yet I am in no hurry to get to the 2020 videos, knowing what is to come.

What a delightful surprise, great interview! I've had a Pocket Palette for about a year now, and love it (thanks Coloring Karia!). It's so flexible and so much easier on brushes than small, deep half pans. I like to have my most used colors in larger pans can decide how much mixing space I need. I'm planning on buying a few more palettes with my next order of extra pans. Maria is a Pacific Northwest treasure, thanks for shining a light on her and her products for artists.
Another way to use the large mixing area pans is to use the mini binder clips to click them to the wings on the lid to expand the mixing area (pan next to the mixing area rather than on top of it like you've shown), rather than take up space on the palette area, so you can have more pans on the palette.
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful interview and gear review! I loved it when I saw it the first time, and it stayed with me, so I just got both small palettes and some extra pans for a new travel painting kit! Now that I revisit your review, I think I might also want to by the actual toolkit organizer - I'll ponder that and in the meantime I'm excited to fill my palette and try it out!

For some reason, there is an underrepresentation of watercolor in contemporary art. There are a lot of people practicing it. But, within academic circles, it doesn't seem to be a very prominent medium at all.

She is a great inspiration and I hope that other young women will see that they can also branch out and not get boxed into the "conventional" ideas of what an artist is or can be. Man, that was incredibly good! When I was doing plein air in Minnesota during the winter, I had a cut off of 18º for going outside to paint because the paints would get too stiff to work. Wish I had known, or thought of, adding alcohol to the paints to keep them workable! Loved this interview, you did a great job Steve!!! BTW, keep Reese away from that vodka... it'll go right through him ;0)

Wow! Maria's energy and enthusiasm is contagious. The big takeaway for me was "palette of place"...getting to observe and know the details of the location and letting that inform the art moving forward. I'm definately getting a tool kit! I'm wondering if it comes with a strap to throw over a shoulder?
They are right about beginners and colour. I'm a beginner and I've never had a palette with more than 12, I'm astounded how others have 24 or 36 colours when I'm in class. I use the Senellier mini - that's only got eight and that feels like plenty.

Oh my goodness, I'm only 3 mins in and this video is already amazing! I love tying art to science through the skill of observation. I think I might have gotten a lot more out of science class if I had been encouraged to paint my physics lessons.

Yup I know. Nothing more I could do without a meticulous sound edit. Not worth it. There was a great differential in volume. If I raise hers to a hearable level then mine distorts. I spoke so little I felt it was worth the compromise to keep her volume higher.
Maria has more of a scientific bent than she lets on to. I like the way she thinks and most of all her art work and how she has integrated her love of science and nature.

I have to think that this artist field kit was inspired by Rite in the Rain's notebook cover. It looks almost exactly the same inside. I use a Rite in the Rain notebook cover for my own art kit, which can be hung around the neck by a lanyard.
I identify so much with you, I paint in game reserves on my lap as I cannot get out of vehicle. We are off to Kruger park next week and I am taking less paints as I take too much all 5he time . What paper do you use. ?
Yeah super cool- how deep are these pans? Compare to a say normal "half pan" size woth the same two dimensional area that you can fill up say 4-5 times with a 5ml tube ?
I'm sure Steve will have a better answer, but I've found that the standard rectangular pans fit about the same amount of paint as a half pan and the big square ones are like full pans. The mini-square one is like a quarter pan. They're maybe less than half as deep as a standard half pan, but I like that because it's easier on brush points as I don't try to force my brush into corners. The palette is easy to clip to a sketchbook so I don't have to bring a board to sketch on. I've never taken it on a long trip, just use it for urban sketching, so you might have to fill extra pans if you were on the road. Hope this helps

You can probably find one easily. It has a loop at each end of the spine. So any generic strap would work.

Yup I know. Nothing more I could do without a meticulous sound edit. Not worth it. There was a great differential in volume. If I raise hers to a hearable level then mine distorts. I spoke so little I felt it was worth the compromise to keep her volume higher.
Maria has more of a scientific bent than she lets on to. I like the way she thinks and most of all her art work and how she has integrated her love of science and nature.

I have to think that this artist field kit was inspired by Rite in the Rain's notebook cover. It looks almost exactly the same inside. I use a Rite in the Rain notebook cover for my own art kit, which can be hung around the neck by a lanyard.

I identify so much with you, I paint in game reserves on my lap as I cannot get out of vehicle. We are off to Kruger park next week and I am taking less paints as I take too much all 5he time . What paper do you use. ?

Yeah super cool- how deep are these pans? Compare to a say normal "half pan" size woth the same two dimensional area that you can fill up say 4-5 times with a 5ml tube ?
Thin, about 1/4 the thickness
I'm sure Steve will have a better answer, but I've found that the standard rectangular pans fit about the same amount of paint as a half pan and the big square ones are like full pans. The mini-square one is like a quarter pan. They're maybe less than half as deep as a standard half pan, but I like that because it's easier on brush points as I don't try to force my brush into corners. The palette is easy to clip to a sketchbook so I don't have to bring a board to sketch on. I've never taken it on a long trip, just use it for urban sketching, so you might have to fill extra pans if you were on the road. Hope this helps
