    Love your paintings; it was nice to watch your process. The art tool kit palettes are very nice, liked seeing how you set yours up and how you use it.

    I have 3. All of the sizes and my favorite go to palette is always The folio. I love it, and I a, considering buying another for gouache. I was reluctant because of cracking with the gouache in a shallow well such as these. But what I wanted to say is, she has a cleaning orocess for these palettes, where she recommends cleaning them out and oiling the magnet which keeps it from rusting. And if there are concerns about the mixing trays, they can be cleaned with a magic eraser and they come white again surprisingly. I never knew about the cleaning process until recently so mine won’t come as clean anymore but they can be kept up well with a cleaning every few months or season. She has a video on this as well as a devoted page and click on icon on her website devoted to the cleaning process.

    I didn't realize they had a larger palette😍. I had seen the smaller mini and even the micro options and I LOVE that they now have an option for artists who like larger brushes. Thank you for a great review.

    You’re right about the tool kit. I’ve been carrying around for a while for plein air. It’s light and holds most of my stuff. I put some magnetic tape on the lid so I could have some separate mixing areas. Your new pallet sounds excellent.

    This is my favourite style of palette! I've got a similar one by Fclub, it's a little bit larger and thicker (1 cm longer and wider, 5 mm thicker) and it's such a convenient form factor. At some point I want to get the palette by Regina's Watercolors as well, it's between the Fclub and Art Toolkit in size but has a glass mixing surface in the lid - very intriguing!

    Hi Jared - amazing work, as usual! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I'm curious what 9 pigments did you choose for the palette?
    A recent sketching "hack" that really changed the whole game for me was using magnetic clips and a magnetic spice jar for water. It all clips together on a clipboard, or even onto the sketchbook itself. The clip magnets will hold the spice jar and a metal paintbox.

      That is a brilliant solution. I’m an old Gurney follower haha so I’ve had an old 2 oz make up jar my wife had and a fridge magnet siliconed you the bottom in a similar fashion but more recently I’ve only done extra large sketches so I haven’t kept up with it.
      My “gurney” easel has magnets in it too for stuff- which works but I realized it was the same size as my strada mini which is too expensive to explicitly recommend but open wide it’s very sturdy and handy.
      I have…
      Cad yellow light
      Cad red med
      Carmine
      Ultramarine blue
      Lavender
      Yellow ochre
      Burnt sienna
      Burnt umber
      Neutral tint

    Nice and big! I've thought about these palletes but I already have a portable Painter and a micro so I don't have much a use- yet! I do like this bigger one. I wonder if you could use this for oil paints if you omitted the pans. Hmmm

    It's so fun to see all artists having different Art Toolkit configurations in their palettes. It's pretty cool that the palette holds up to your water pooling in the mixing areas. Time to now run over to your Patreon for your newer videos (I didn't realize you now have more tiers! Will upgrade to those!)

    I absolutely love the paintings. especially the shift in detail from the flowers and the background! getting the focus right is something I've been trying to work on recently. I'm really hoping to get one of their kits this summer! and a 100% cotton sketchbook. When it came to mixing with gouache did you put out fresh gouache from a tube or did you use some dried in the palette? I love using white gouache with my watercolors, but it's not as easy for me to keep a tube of paint on me as it would be to just have it dried in my palette. maybe having the case would fix that problem, but if you have any advice for traveling with gouache it would be very appreciated!

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  2 года назад +3

      Hi Ben! Thanks for watching. It's all about edge control. I try to keep the object of interest in the highest level of contrast and with the sharpest edges. Often times I spend the last part of a sketch using clean water and knocking off the edges where I don't want interest to be pulled.
      So- gouache. Gouache is not great after it dries. It's very difficult to get it as strong as you need it. If gouache has any amount of water in it it significantly reduces the strength of it. Sometimes I put it in a corner of a mixing area and it eventually collects into a small cake but it's finicky and the best results come straight from the tube. If you notice in the video- I'm holding the tube in my hand. My preferred method is to just hold the tube and dip directly into the tube for gouache and then slather it with some color to change it. It's not impossible to have it out of the palette- just keep in mind you need to spray it a couple times ahead of time and try to soften it. Otherwise I'd reccomend you buy a small tube of it and keep it in your pocket or kit and just pull directly from it. Hope that helps!

      @@JaredCullum Thank you for the help! I didn't notice you holding the tube in the video but that may just be cause of how late it is here (almost 2 am now). I'll definitely use the advice for edge control since I always find myself trying to put down everything I see. And with the gouache I'll try out your method once I'm able to get a tube of it. The only white gouache I have right now is some from school that I squeezed into my palette. I'm excited to test this stuff out since I want to do more plein air painting and I have a trip to New York coming up. Thank you for all the help!!

      @@beng.7285 Awesome! Have a safe trip! Michaels in the US has WN professional grade gouache for $10 and often has a coupon. My favorite is M Graham, though. If you were near Pittsburgh I'd just give you a tube to try! :)

    This is the review I’ve been waiting for! Thank you for sharing! Have you tried filling the pans with gouache? Or do you think it would crack? I’m contemplating ordering 2 for watercolor and gouache

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  2 года назад

      I think you could make gouache work. I find m graham is less likely to crumble out- but it likely will. I don’t think it would be a perfect solution but it is possible to work. There isn’t a perfect solution for gouache. It’s so finicky haha.
      Worse comes to worse you could toss it and replace it with a different brand of watercolor. I find gouache works best just poured in a wet paper towel. So you could order one with all mixing surfaces and have a small wet paper towel you put on the side.

      Hi Maria! In both instances I'm using a "Perfect Sketchbook." I love those sketchbooks but they're quite expensive. I think the real affordable "perfect" sketchbook would probably be to buy a pad of Arches and cut it in half and have it bound at a print shop. That's the best for the least. However... The Perfect from Etchr is the best I think I've used. Pentalic makes a nice one. Saunders also has a great spiral bound but it's only available from Jacksons in the UK.
      I have had other people ask for a similar thing. I've planned on doing live painting sessions soon and being able to answer questions and talk live as I go. I will have to do that some time. I'm self-taught too and would be happy to lay out my own insight and trajectory to get where I am.

    Could you go over your Strada set up in a future video?

    • @JaredCullum
      @JaredCullum  2 года назад

      Yes- although it’s literally brand new. I always just used it as a standard pochade but it dawned on me walking out the door I could try to open it all the way and have a shelf to the right and it worked! It’s a strada micro with one attached shelf to the box left so it hangs down. It’s opened a full 180. The little clip that sticks out acts as an anchor extension to rest the block or sketchbook on. I like that it gives me the full right side as a shelf for a full palette or brushes cup whatever.
