Hands down, this is the best video out there for unclogging a bathtub drain. Straight forward, logical, & concise. I really appreciate the explanations of WHY you should do it this way & the tip to grease the fittings before reassembling isn't found anywhere else. I fixed our bathtub this morning following your instructions to the letter and it works like a champ now. You just saved us a ton of money, assuming I could even get a plumber to come out here in the snow. Thanks! A 65 year old handy-wife.
You just made my day, I’ve had this clog of hair in the drain for days and I got a Manuel auger snake to handle it. Until I saw your video, I didn’t realize I was getting stuck in the pipe trap! So with the help of my mom turning the auger and me applying pressure in the pipe, we finally got it through and fished a monster hair clog!!! I cannot thank you enough!!!🎉🎉🎉❤
I've been researching this issue lately and this is the only video I came across which is clearly explaining the difference between the two drain openings in a bathtub. Thank you so much for this valuable contribution.
You are a wonderful person thank you so much for your tutorial!!!! I used a 15ft manual Drain cleaner cable and I followed your instructions your awesome the problem was solved and money was saved!!! I’m a single mother of three so I highly appreciate this presentation!!! My kids and myself Thank you for sharing your video!!! God bless you!🙏🏻
Thanks, I got mine working better than when we moved in 5yrs ago, it was always a slow drain until it recently became a NO drain. I just used the cheap manual 50ft snake for under $40. I didn't realize how hard it was to get through the trap until watching this. And that twisting method worked beautifully.
I was in this same situation and trying a drill and snake and it was too powerful . I ended up getting a handheld and pushed it through and it worked great. You saved me at least 300. Thank you.
You saved me soooo much time and effort. I thought I was going to have to remove the drain insert. Before watching your video I purchased a new one from the big Orange store for $25. I'm not a plumber so I never thought of going through the overflow. I didn't pull any gunk out, i just kept going a few more feet and ran hot water.
Thank you so much! I have been fighting with the bottom drain for weeks. I followed your instructions and I was able to remove the clog with a mini manual hand auger. I really appreciate you taking the time to give a thorough explanation of how everything works and how to do this properly. Thank you!!!
Thanks so much for this tutorial, I purchased a cobra skinny snake and followed other tutorials and got the result you demonstrated with the snake going up. Yours was the only tutorial I saw that showed to do it that way. Again thank you so much!
Great video, Danny. I watched quite a few but you were the only person to provide the secret to getting the snake to go down the shower drain. I tried for hours and no go. Then I saw that you said to bend the tip of the snake a little like you have yours bent. And, bingo! down the drain the snake went. Before it just kept bottoming out and stopping and I couldn't push it in anymore. But with the bend, I was able to snake about 20 feet of pipe and pull out the hair blockage and clear the drain. Thanks, Danny, great stuff!
Thank you so much for this video . I didn't end up needing a snake, just a good plunging. It's a good feeling fixing a problem like this yourself, but I couldn't have done it without your video.😁👍
I did it!!!! We are between maintenance men. I got the hand crank type. I am not a plumber so I didn't think I would invest in that pedal type. My drain runs like a dream. ❤
You can say that again, trying to unclog a tub through the tub shoe is almost if not practically impossible. The way that I was taught to unclog tubs is through the overflow tube/standing waste tube.Good video my Brother.
Thanks for showing this technique. Going thru the trap and down with just a closet auger, I was able to pull a giant hair clog out. Tub drains now. Family happier.
I’ve snaked my outside clean out on my main bathroom tub for awhile now. I tried the tub once.. to no real avail.. this video did the trick! A ton of old hair from the last home owner! Thanks for saving me money!!
Great video and info! Just had a bathroom remodeled and kids were complaining of a slow drain while showering. Turns out the bell was seating too low in the open position. Took off the cover and made the adjustment now drains like a charm. Thanks!
Wow man your awesome , thank you soo much , had this tub clogged for 3 months was afraid to try unclogging it , did it your way with a $30 drum w/drill adapter and walls it’s done . Saved me $175 easy
Thank you! Great video. I currently have problems with a clog due to tree roots in the main drain line going from the bathrooms to the septic tank. That's going to take my handyman with his roto-rooter auger. But, what does it mean when the drain makes that sound that the one did in your video only its not draining? It's just like it's burping from down in the line. A small amount of water had drained out and about a minute later the burping sound started and it lasted for 2 or 3 minutes.
Always love watching an actual profession fix things. Question: is it typical for the snake to retrieve the clogged hair or just break it up so it can continue down the drain?
very good video, now it you have any hints on a back to back tub setup. I had 2 plumbing companies come and both failed to get their cable down the drain properly.
Great video! Problem was I thought once it stopped that was as far as it could go. Then I saw your video yo keep feeding the cable and rotation while pushing forcefully . I kept doing that back and forth next thing I knew the water started to go down. Prior to your video I was fighting with the auger for an hour and half. After your video 20 mins And I pulled up so much disgusting gunk. Thank you 😊 very informative.
thank you for the video. i have a plastic strip with barbs to remove hair. I have used CLR chemical but not much improvement. i find more chemicals, if no improvement will look for small snake machine....thank you for encouragement. happy new years 2023!
Hey I'm having an issue with my drain! Snaked it, think I may have passed the P trap but not sure. I took out my stopper and adjusted it, but the second time I went to snake it, my stopper assembly had broken. I took it out, and when my girlfriend showered next our bathtub wasn't draining at all. I snaked it from both entrances too. I'm not sure why it isn't draining, is there any chance it's farther down the line and I would need a plumber to come out? thanks
Thank you for this video just wanted to say my sister went in the hardware store and the cashier told her not to buy any drain cleaner just put a whole bottle of dawn dish soap and let it sit for 45 minutes . well i put a whole bottle of dish soap in the tub drain and then i put boiling hot water and left it over night and my drain is clear. awesome just wanted to share
After watching this I used an auger (with my drill attached) that worked PERFECTLY. Using the drill made it so easy. Note: You will have to have an auger specifically with a drill attachment. Anyway, I pulled out 2 handfuls of hair and gunk! I went back in and pulled up even more. Tub drains perfectly. THANK YOU!
Is it normal to smell gas and be dizzy when taking out the bottom drain? I'm hoping Fufby greak something or if that thread glue was supposed to stay 🤷🏼♀️😵💫 2-year-old home
Hi, my plug is not working. Water is draing over hours after shower. I pulled the bottom drain shield thingy. I cant get the top off..but when i try to snake the bottom hole there is something hard there. I thought plug was stuck up... But after watching your vid im not sure what it could be .. ill keep trying to get top screws off. Also what kind of Hrease r u using please. I saw in one vid a guy using CLR an boat grease. Can you tell me what you use sir. Thank you for your vid.. i also dont have a mechanical spinny thingy.. ill have to try to snake by hand once objec is out of way. Do you think it might be the bell on the plug..broke off?? Or dangling from trying to unplug an release water.. 😢😢😢 mom ..in horrible situation. Ty
My tub is a spa tub. You know it's got the shooting the water but it don't work. And my thing do stop the water so I can fill up isn't like that It's a round thing and it just makes the little thing I put down on the drain just drop down. I'm horrible at describing things and I'm tired right now because this bathtub keeps giving me issues. So I would have to go down the drain and unless you can tell me how to get that twist stopper thing off the back of the tub
We paid a plumber last year to snake the tub and he didn't pull out (what I just learned is called) the trip lever and it was ineffective. It was an eye-opener to watch your demonstration on how the snake went in the wrong direction! Now I see two possible problems: (1) there is still a clog, and/or (2) the trip lever is not properly adjusted. I'm going to try snaking the tub myself based on this video.
How much ft does a tub drain usually need, I’m having a issue where i reach the end of the cable and still nothing, tried the overflow and tub drain nothing
I use a gallon of nitroglycerin. That way the pipes are completely oblivious to anything. Just be sure and weare safety glassses. I wounder if u could use carbolic acid and a jetter hose nozel.
Second video of yours that I've seen. Great content, great editing, and really super helpful. I pick up all kinds of tips that I wouldn't have anticipated. Thanks.
Thank you for this video. I'm going to be giving it an attempt. I haven't thought to grease the hardware before. Definitely will do that. Is there a good go to grease that you use?
i have a problem, whenever i run the shower upstairs, the kitchen sink clogs and backs up. i snaked the kitchen sink with a 50 ft snake and it still backs up with the shower on. what should i do now? snake the tub?
So I have two hand snakes.....one with a claw. My building maintenance guy removed the wall trap and worked an industrial snake down and unclogged it when he did it. Is it possible to do with the snakes I have.
I recently had a sewer cleanout company come by and they snaked from the basement to solve some overflowing sinks on my first floor but they ended up not fixing the plug with the snake in the basement and had to tip out a toilet on the second floor and now as a result or maybe not as a result the second floor bathtub does not drain and not sure if the bell mechanism that stops the tub had fallen down my drain pipe, can you advise on how to remove that? Six months ago the same thing happened where my first floor sinks were overflowing and I was able to snake the very same bathtub using a manual handheld snake but this time I can only get the snake to come out the bottom drain hole and not feed it down into where the Trap / plug is, and I'm speculating that the bell is plugging things but it was draining reasonably before the sewer drain clean-out company came on Monday? Thanks
*I've got effectively a 100% tub blockage, 1930s prewar apartment. Manual snake. Can't call the 'super' to remedy the clog for reasons hard to explain. I've got a manual snake and will try this out. Will return with the results. God willing it will work b/c really, I can't call the super - I might be calling YOU Danny lol*
I was about to give up after 40 minutes not getting past the trap. I took a 5 minute break and tried again and I was able to feed about 15 ft into the plumbing. I stopped because I ran out of line. My snake has a thumb screw which has to be loosened and tightened every time, that’s why it was so difficult. Next time I’ll invest in a new one.

Same here! And thanks for your comment as well Jim because I skimmed over that part of the video until I read it.
@@andyburchardt2055 you're welcome!
Can the cable damaged the drain pipe because pressure is applied to push the cable through the trap area?
I've watched several of these and this is the first one to say you need to snake from the "top." Good tip.
Thank you so much for this video . I didn't end up needing a snake, just a good plunging. It's a good feeling fixing a problem like this yourself, but I couldn't have done it without your video.😁👍

This helped me solve a problem I'd just been living with for WAY too long. Thanks!

My tub had a plastic drain in tub! Can you take it out!
Great video and info! Just had a bathroom remodeled and kids were complaining of a slow drain while showering. Turns out the bell was seating too low in the open position. Took off the cover and made the adjustment now drains like a charm. Thanks!
This happened to me exactly like this! Didn't know anything about the bell, works like a charm!
I can't get a screw driver over the blockage it must be the bell on my tub as well
Oh my God this really helped me! I just unclogged my stoppage! I was 👌🏾 this close to calling and paying for a plumber to fix! Thank u!
I can’t get the snake to go further than the trap.
Wow man your awesome , thank you soo much , had this tub clogged for 3 months was afraid to try unclogging it , did it your way with a $30 drum w/drill adapter and walls it’s done . Saved me $175 easy
Outstanding thank you!! I was having problems getting around trap. I thought it was the clog. Steady presure was the key!!
Very helpful tip about applying pressure to get the snake into the trap. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thank you! If this does not work for anybody, keep trying to push it further in. We thought it was not working but then tried harder and got through.
Thank you! Great video. I currently have problems with a clog due to tree roots in the main drain line going from the bathrooms to the septic tank. Thanks. I had success with the just the hand held crank type snake. Pushed in slowly with little force, at the same time turning like mad.
Always love watching an actual profession fix things. Question: is it typical for the snake to retrieve the clogged hair or just break it up so it can continue down the drain?
The snake usually grabs the hair and you have to cut it off the end of the snake cable. Thanks for watching.
very good video, now it you have any hints on a back to back tub setup. I had 2 plumbing companies come and both failed to get their cable down the drain properly.

Nice!
Very helpful video. Especially the tub you working on is almost an exact match with mine. Thank you for the video.
You did a great job roughly how much would that job cost? For Professional work
Great, thank you. I'm going to do that tomorrow morning. Bought the manual auger, crossing fingers.
thank you for the video. i have a plastic strip with barbs to remove hair. I have used CLR chemical but not much improvement. i find more chemicals, if no improvement will look for small snake machine....thank you for encouragement. happy new years 2023!

kathy redmond wow, seriously!?
Do you do the same with a bathtub with no lever and a foot stopper? Can't get the foot stopper to unscrew.

What if i have a stand up shower. I only have a drain. Can i use snake through drain or is there another way to feed line
My tub is evidently about 30 years old as it doesn't have the trip lever mechanism like you showed. How do I get the snake down into the drain?
Awesome, not every plumber take the time to go in detail like that. Thanks
Any chance of damaging the pvc while applying heavier pressure?
Hi, my plug is not working. Water is draing over hours after shower. I pulled the bottom drain shield thingy. Will a wire coat hanger work? The dollar tree has this drain Rooter and it does a fantastic job. But it won't reach down that far.
My tub is a spa tub. You know it's got the shooting the water but it don't work. We have to call the professionals so that pipes are not damage from the snake I enjoy watching my plumber did use the grease for friction.

Thx man I am a maintenance worker and this has happened alot in the low income area I am in charge of
Thank you how long of a cable do you need?
What type of grease are you putting on the plug?
You just saved me a lot of money!! Thank you so much........This was the best video!
How much ft does a tub drain usually need, I’m having a issue where i reach the end of the cable and still nothing, tried the overflow and tub drain nothing
Can I use a different drain snake like example Milwaukee
I use a gallon of nitroglycerin. That way the pipes are completely oblivious to anything. Just be sure and weare safety glassses.
I wounder if u could use carbolic acid and a jetter hose nozel.
Second video of yours that I've seen. Great content, great editing, and really super helpful. I pick up all kinds of tips that I wouldn't have anticipated. Thanks.
What type of grease are you using to lubricate those parts? Brand?
Hercules 40610 Plumbers Silicone Grease
How much is a fare rate to pay a plumber to do this in Orlando Florida?
Good advice on where to start never knew that. Thank you!
+John Mal you are very welcome! Thanks for watching!!
Great video. Let me ask you. Is rodding it out better? Will it last longer? Also, I never take baths so why do I need the bell?
What brand is your snake? It looks different. Can you please give the name brand. Thank you
This is awesome, thank you. Can I buy a long snake cable like that at Lowe’s?
What do you do when you remove trip lever and the bottom mechanism the Bell which blocks the water off isn't attached SMH
Thank you for this video. I'm going to be giving it an attempt. I haven't thought to grease the hardware before. Definitely will do that. Is there a good go to grease that you use?
I use 300 Degree plumbers grease. Thanks for watching!
What happens if you went down the drain and it gets stuck 😢???? It's plastic not fancy snake.
Thanks for the thorough instruction. I feel confident using my drain cleaner to do a proper job.
i have a problem, whenever i run the shower upstairs, the kitchen sink clogs and backs up. i snaked the kitchen sink with a 50 ft snake and it still backs up with the shower on. what should i do now? snake the tub?
Thank you for the demo. I just unclogged my drain!
U went out and bought that??
Súper informative and helpful. This is very helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Awesome. How do you remove a plunger that has broken off in the overflow pipe? Thanks
Mine was stuck and broke off
NIcely done. I shine off the bell but haven't greased it. I will give that a try on the next clog.
What kind of grease can I use? Petroleum jelly?
What do i do when my drain does not have a trip lever mechanism?
My bathtub drain is clogged and when I use the snake drill nothing comes up…what do you think is the problem and what should I do ???
Wow, that is so professional.
Thanks for this video. It’s very helpful.
Thank you very much for this very well done video.
I couldnt seem to get past the trap before I was applying pressure and trying to guide it but still couldnt seem to get passed
How do you snake a tub if it doesn't have an over flow opening
So I have two hand snakes.....one with a claw. My building maintenance guy removed the wall trap and worked an industrial snake down and unclogged it when he did it. Is it possible to do with the snakes I have.
Yes
When I pulled out the assembly, the drain stopper broke off of the end and is now sitting down the hatch and I cannot retrieve. Suggestions?
Call a plumber?
Gracias maestro por realizar este instructivo vídeo de enseñanza de plomería!
can a manual snake work the same?
And what type of grease are you using ?
I recently had a sewer cleanout company come by and they snaked from the basement to solve some overflowing sinks on my first floor but they ended up not fixing the plug with the snake in the basement and had to tip out a toilet on the second floor and now as a result or maybe not as a result the second floor bathtub does not drain and not sure if the bell mechanism that stops the tub had fallen down my drain pipe, can you advise on how to remove that?

Thanks
Can you do this with a very old clawfoot tub?
I have a situation. The snake head does NOT fit down, either the overflow or the drain.
Nice demonstration
Hey my tub don't have a trap tub switch is that a problem?
Thanks for details instructions, very helpful!!!
That what happened this morning when I cut on the shower and it got clogged up so I have a couple water off that cut the water back on
I was about to give up after 40 minutes not getting past the trap. I took a 5 minute break and tried again and I was able to feed about 15 ft into the plumbing. I stopped because I ran out of line. My snake has a thumb screw which has to be loosened and tightened every time, that’s why it was so difficult. Next time I’ll invest in a new one.
Oh my God you totally saved me thank you, I was doing it totally wrong 🤪
This is an excellent video! Thanks.
What if there is one screw in the middle of the plate you took off?
hi there , great video Dan the man.
What if when I remove the cap and the little bell isn’t on and come out ? My water goes down but very slow
I can’t tell if the bell fell in or what but the snake isn’t going in very far
