      I also find that camping in wintertime, a pad is better than an air matress as the matress is like sleeping on a bed of air which gets very cold in a blizzard

      We don't go camping often, but when we do we rent a cabin. But because we bring a lot of stuff like tables and set up our own kitchen area. This inspired me to build one. I just can't for things to "normalize" again and try the chuck box camp kitchen that I built. I hope to impress our friends and acquaintances in the camp site.

    People in the comment section may be acting up all smart and criticizing everything shown in the video. But for someone like me who have never even set foot away from civilization this really gives me a boost of confidence, it covers all my reservations about going outdoors. As far as I am considered it fulfills it's role of teaching the basics to an absolute beginner like me.

      Hi. Thanks!! Don’t worry about those folks criticizing. We made this video so folks would not be intimidated by going camping. These people criticizing act like you have to be miserable and spend $1000 to go camping. It’s not true. I’ve been really miserable while sitting in a tent at 100 deg. It’s much more fun to enjoy camping. Have fun!

    This may not be "roughing it", but I like the way this fellow understands the value of recommending that people start a thing that _can_ be challenging on easy mode. Gives them a better chance of enjoying themselves, and finding the adventure relaxing, the first time, so they're more likely to return to it, & gradually build up their skills.

      Hi. Your comment are the reason we made this video. I was a Scoutmaster for 10 years. When I first became a Scoutmaster, I saw young scouts join the troop and if they had a bad first camp out, never came back. I began to make certain that the first camping trip for the young scouts was on a nice weekend with clear instruction in everything they needed. I even kept a few extra items in the scout trailer in case they forgot a pillow or sleeping bag. We had more scouts stay in and earn Eagle.
      One thing is for certain, if you camp enough, you’ll get rained on, get cold, and just be miserable. The first camp out is not the time for this. My best friend from high school still refuses to camp after a miserable weekend a group of us had probably 30 years ago. 🤣

    • @mysterylovescompany2657

      @@useful.knowledge you've done that very effectively, so feel good. :-) I'm not sure what Eagle means; is it like being an elder scout? Where I am, those are called Venturers. It's cool to hear that success story, either way.
      I personally _love_ camping, & will do it for a week at a time (more, if my buddy of the trip is able), but I also find that - as with most things - enjoyment is easiest when I am not physically uncomfortable. So that means I always make sure I have a menu plan (with contingencies for if energy is low, like canned soup, rice pouches, jaffles etc.), all the gear I know _I_ need, a sleeping situation which works for my specific requirements (chronic injuries from a car accident mean that finding that balance took me a little more time than for the average camper, but I didn't let those initial stumbles put me off), & am warm enough.
      I honestly believe that _everyone_ has the potential to enjoy camping, but that you just have to sort of baby them the first few times until they're sufficiently invested that you can start letting the experience become more challenging, knowing that it won't ruin the whole concept for them.
      It's cool that as a veteran of a very long camping career you agree. ^_^
      I'm sorry about your friend, & what he's been robbed of. That really sucks. :-(

    Tip: Buy a quality blow up pool floaty to use as a mattress. A cement Patch Kit might be something to invest in also. Might want to test it before you go camping to make sure it doesn't go flat in less than 15 hours. Or you might have to blow it up again in the middle of the night if air is making it through the seams. Plus most of them come with a pillow you can blow up. Designed to keep your head elevated in the water. It'll work just as good on land. It would be good option if you have a lot of kids. They'll all can have a personal mattress without breaking the bank.

    Great video. My son just turned 15. My first experience camping out was when my son was 10. I thought I had it all figured out. It’s like if I saw your video and took your advise. Only thing is that one has to live it to know it. The night was freezing cold. I was trying to sleep but the cold kept me up all night. That night I could just imagen how cold my 5 year old girl, my wife, and my son were. First thing in the morning my wife said to me, never again. I learned from my mistakes and perchases better tent, sleeping bags, and other things here and there. Up to this day I still get things that I know will add to our comfort of camping out. Good video for first timers.
    I have camped since I was young and in national parks in Kenya close to wild animals - but that’s a different story.
    I usually start fire with a flint striker
    One suggestion to everyone is check your all your gear before you go camping. You can improvise for missing pegs etc but check before you go.

    I haven't been camping since my Cub Scout days, but got the itch during covid. Found this video and I appreciated how clearly you spelled out everything I'd need. Hi. Thanks very much for your kind comments. It’s awesome that you are taking your kids camping. I was a Scoutmaster for ten years. I set up a camping trip just like the one in the video when we bridged up new scouts from Cubs every year. It introduced the new scouts to a camping trip that was fun and relaxing. We found that we retained more new scouts. As I got older, I thought many adults would like the same type of outing which is why we made the video. Have fun camping with those kids!! My 28 year old son was tent camping this weekend. He still loves it.

      @@useful.knowledge You did a great job -- I particularly appreciated the advice to bring gloves and a shovel. I wouldn't have thought of either. My kids are elementary school aged and particularly loved roasting 5-6 marshmallows at a time (and gathering sticks to keep the campfire going). Both are a bit tired today but they want to do it again!

    Hey that is great for someone to explain first stepping stones to camping. Remember to not litter, leave your site better than before! Pack it in.. pack it out. Keep your foods and pantry in vehicles, animals will visit and rummage thru your stuff if left open on table or in tent.. you dont want that. Also pack for foul Weather even though it's nice, it can get worse when in the woods. Best of all, buy yourself a boy scout handbook to guide you further into other outdoor activities. No such thing as bad Weather, its bad gear.

    Thank you for this video. I want to take my husband to nature but like my modern comforts. He wants to hike and I want to just sit and paint nature. So I am planning a trip to make the experience great for both of us. It seems camping isn't too much different than living without utilities after a hurricane, of which I know well! Thanks!!!

    • @useful.knowledge
      @useful.knowledge  3 года назад +1

      Hi. Thanks for the comments. I hope you have a great camping trip. Very true about camping being not much different than living without utilities during a hurricane aftermath. When the April 27, 2011 tornadoes tore up Alabama, we lived without utilities for a while. it felt oddly like camping. With that said, I really feel for those that took the many hurricane hits that Louisiana has taken this year.

      @@useful.knowledge I have family in ever coastal city from Houston,Tx to Pensacola,FL. We know our hurricanes! Forget the milk and bread, get beer and charcoal and fill all the receptacles with water. The first 3 days of cleanup are full of mud and and BBQ. After that, well, we start blessing each others' hearts through gritted teeth.🤣

    A good packing up tip: Put your tent and ground cloth in your empty cooler (or a large trash bag) to transport home. It will be damp in the morning from the dew, and will get musty if you pack it up when wet. Dry it out and refold/pack it for the next trip when you get home.

    • @useful.knowledge
      @useful.knowledge  3 года назад +1

      Thanks!! Everyone, this is good info from Simir. You can make your new tent smell miserable if you don't dry it out before you pack it up. Also same goes for your sleeping bag.

Being new and skint, I want to start with the very basics incase it's not something we like or get the opportunity to do often. I don't want to spend a fortune or buy anything unnecessary.
