Love that! And I vacation a lot in Missouri.....lot of decent hills, and it runs like a champ! Glad I caught this. I’ve been open kettle tomatoes for many moons. But this past couple years I feel like the maters are less acidic snd find jars not sealed. I’ve never had to put lemon juice or citric acid in my maters. Leaves me wondering what’s going on with the old school maters. They need to be acidic to open kettle. Any suggestions

    • @useful.knowledge
      @useful.knowledge 18 дней назад

      Hi. Actually most garden variety tomatoes are acidic enough for open kettle canning. If you don’t have one, get an acidity tester. I love mine. About the lids, make sure your jars are hot and, most importantly, the tomatoes are near boiling. Also make sure to clean the jar rim, I stopped losing jars when I made the rims were clean. Here is a good article on tomato acidity: archives.joe.org/joe/2010december/rb6.php

    A cheaper way to go may not be the cheapest method. Just because it is cheaper to refill yourself does not make the rate cheaper for you. Keeping a propane 20 # tank for an emergency may not be the best way to fill a tank for your heater. You may need 15# and not 20# in a larger tank.
