TY so much for this info! Have dabbled in 'canning' past few yrs, & see this as an important bit of advice. Wish l lived closer to my family, because nearly all of them garden & can their own goods. Husband's family seem to think everything comes from a store...lol. l use compromised lids on jars of goods, which do not need a 'canned' seal, (i.e. dry foods, sewing supplies, extra veggie seeds, etc.) For lids w/pinch of rust &/or jars w/tiny chips, l store smaller items in garage, which tend to end up having no specific place, (i.e. extra nuts, bolts, screws, washers, nails, etc). Have made a couple of hanging mobiles to help keep garden goodies safe. Would love to hear ideas, for any other extra uses, for compromised lids. Thanks again for 'useful info'.
I have seen that and also have stored brand new jars and lids in a shed outside in the heat. I have always used the lids and thought they might fail for the reasons you state. I have never had a jar fail to seal. You are being careful and that's a good idea! But for me, it's been ok so far!
So glad you posted this. I live in 6,000 altitude and all my lids from new boxes are completely sealed. In fact it is kind of scary to take off as some have popped and come off flying. I now do it away from my face or body. I am waiting for someone to get hurt (which I hope does not happen) and sue the companies that do this, just to save a few bucks. Companies use to take pride in their company. Now it is how much they can make it seems. So anyway have to buy new lids. That way same companies with the jars make more money for sure. But it is what it is, and my canning is to important to me.
Great video. 👍🏻 I like to use forjars lids myself. They always seal. I had a whole flat of kerr jars and the lids were all duds. Now I just use those compromised lids for storing dry goods.
Thanks! I’ve canned so many jalapeños this year. They just keep on producing. For the open kettle method just make sure you get the hot jalapeños in the hot jar and the lids on quickly. They seal every time.
I take mine off, but them in a baggy and normally a couple of days later, the rubber has come back. I still dump my lids in hot water before sealing. Yesterday, had 1 lid that did not want to sit on the jar, it was not used. I have seen some bent lids from the flat of jars and have also gotten a couple of jars that after 2 tries of not sealing, the jars were not flat. Water test with finger confirmed my suspicion.
I bring a small pan of water up to a boil then remove from the stove. I drop my lids in and wait a minute or two. You'll see the seal puff back up. Then when I put it on a jar, feel that it's completely centered. You can kinda feel it sticks a little. Then put rings on finger tight. I had a lot of failures with these new sure tight ball lids until I did that. No failures since.
@@cathyann6835 I am super new to canning and wondered is it a problem to put a slightly damp lid on a jar before water bath canning… does that mess up the seal?
@@bh4396 no being damp doesn’t mess up the seal. The biggest causes of failure for me, (with these new cheaper lids) is a couple reasons. The first important thing is to look at your jar. I’ve had a jar that had an imperfection on the top where the seal goes. Maybe a tiny bump or nick, so run your finger around it to check for anything like that. Then wipe your jars well making sure there’s no food or oil on where it’ll seal. Then I look at the lid to make sure it has enough of the seal material. I’ve seen a couple that weren’t very good. I get a pan of hot water and drop the lid in letting the seal swell just a little and to let any indentation from packaging smooth out. When I put the lid on the jar I can kinda feel that it will stick a little. Put your ring on and sit a finger on top of the lid while twisting ring on. Once the jar starts to move while twisting down, I only go about a quarter turn or less to keep lid on. Don’t over tighten. Then put in canner. I still get a failure here or there but I plan my meals to eat whatever does fail. I never had this issue with older lids so don’t be hard on yourself. You’ll get the hang of it. Having good rubber in the lid is important. I’ve noticed some generic brands can be better, but not always.
Thanks Jamie. I reuse those lids to vacuum pack dehydrated foods because I run through those fairly quickly. Also, once I open that vac-pac jar, I will toss that lid. God Bless and stay safe.
Jars used to come in a full box, not a shallow flat. There was room to pack lids/ rings in a flat box under the jars. Miss those cardboard boxes to store my jars
I've had that complaint about those lids that come on the jars. But, I can't bring myself to throw them away. I usually leave them off for a couple of weeks then put them in really hot water. Then, I use them on things like applesauce.... never would I use them on meat, or something expensive.
Thankyou for showing that..I didn't realize that..I have found that if I don't make my water hot &sook my lids they may not seal..if you have lids with white rings..I use those only for water bath, not pressure canning..they buckle under pressure and may not seal... everyone be safe🙏🙏🇺🇲🇺🇲
Here in Canada, boxes of jars used to come with the lids upside down with the rings on very loosely. And although I did examine the flats prior to use, I wasn’t finding the depression in the sealing compound that is very evident on the lid you showed. I must check to see if new boxes are still packed with the lids turned upside down.
Thanks for the comment. We are starting to think it could be how these flats are stored at the manufacture and how that are shipped. Also, wondering how they are stacked during shipping.
@@useful.knowledge : I looked at both Walmart and Canadian Tire last night and all the jars are now shipped with the sealing compound against the rims.
@@useful.knowledge : The last few years I’ve been purchasing jars at thrift stores. Old jars are thicker glass - not that new jars are no good, mind you - and it keeps them out of the landfill. Plus it’s a tiny bit cheaper - not a lot once you replace the rings and lids though.
I just bought another flat of jars which has the rings very loosely attached. None of them seemed like the flat top was stuck. The other flats had the rings tight and were very tightly shrink wrapped. I think the shrinkwrap along with hot warehouses causes the tighter rings to do what they.are supposed to do...seal!
I used the lids that came with the jars. I lost all 12 jars of veggies. They sealed but let loose a d u sealed within 2 days. I always put the lids in warm water but it did not work. So Yes, they are compromised.
The jars and lids used to come packaged so differently. If Ball/Kerr are cheating us, like I believe they are, I won't support them by buying boxes of their lids. I have been buying reusable lids. Next time, I will buy ForJar lids. The compound is so much thicker. You may want to check them out. There are discount codes on some of the other channels.
Also never tighten the ring after the jar has sealed it will break the seal. Many times people do that and they wonder why their stuff spoils the ring will be loose just leave it alone. After a day or two you can take the rings off and reuse them with other lids. I have canned for many years I’m 75 years old I can strawberry syrup the other day and they all sealed. I also save my pickle jars and reuse them. Sometimes the lid smells like pickles so I use the baking soda to Soak the lids and then rinse them. The pickles smell will be gone and you can use the lids and jars over and over
Your video reminded me of the Walmart brand sold about 8 years ago. Though I wasn’t canning back then, I did buy jars air crafts and the lids and rings were packaged separately. They were not attached to the jars. That packaging is no longer used but, I’m thinking for your reasoning that is why they were separate at that time.
Funny I found this because I noticed it last week when canning. But, I have never had an issue with them not sealing. You made a great point. Have you reached out to the company?
The more recent lids are inferior to the older lids. I bought ball dome lids from the 1989s I happened upon. They are heavier and there was a more generous amount of sealant. The lids and screw bands were sealed separately in former dacades and not put on the jars. and this indentation thing could not happen! Inspect new jars and lids very carefully. Ball quality has declined and to a point some gave up canning because of it. Sad situation!
I bought several boxes of jars last year and had so many lids that the edge’s were bent and a bunch of them the edges were folded under and pinched flat between the jar and the ring . I had wondered if they were not supposed to be used . I did use the ones that looked ok but kept the bent and folded ones thinking about calling the company. The store would not take them beck . They said they would need the case of jars with the lids .
Hi. There have been several posts of issues like you had last year. I miss the days when the lids were just thrown in the flat inside a small box. It’s honestly best just to buy a new box of lids or maybe even lids and rings. Thanks for sharing!! Much appreciated!
Great point. I canned 6 and 2 didn't seal, thought it was me. Great information!! From now on I will write used on them and use them for dry things I putbin. Thank you.
Thank you! I noticed the "seal" on the new unused jars too and the indentations on the lids. I have never had so many failures with Ball lids on new jars like I have lately. I thought I just hadn't noticed. Thanks!
From the comments, it’s a mixed bag. Some folks say yes but many experienced canners have said they’ve had real issues with these lids. That’s why I just don’t use them for canning.
No not lead or any contamination. The rubber compound on the lid has already been indented like it was sealed. It seems that many times they place the lids on too tight at the factory
Those jars and lids were obviously shipped where they got pretty darn hot to have sone that - if the indentation isn’t present I would still use them. But otherwise I would use foe dey dehydrated storage
I have a question. First off, I Love your videos! I've learned so much as a new canner, thank you! My question is: "Can you tell me if the open kettle method is safe for canning jelly using a ball jelly & jam maker instead of stove top boiling"?
I have a question. I have Harvest Guard reusable lids, can I can jelly/jam with them as you do it ? The flip and flip back ? Since they are a hard plastic with a rubber ring used to seal, will it work ? Tia
Hi. I have never used those. This may sound weird but you can easily try this. Boil some water and follow my normal canning process. Can the water and see if it seals correctly and stays sealed for a few days. Please let me know if they works

Hi. Thanks for the comments! I’ve had them “seal” and ping in the back seat of my truck while going home from the store. I guess the a/c hit them. The way I look at is if I’m putting all this work in to can stuff, I want the lids to be pristine. I hope you have great canning season!
back in about 2014 there was the first (of many) lid shortage scares...at that time I found a Ball Lid seller on Ebay and I bought several gross' of lids...(thousands of them) at the time I thought it was stupid but "just in case"....I am still using those lids but am running low however I do get new lids from time to time from people, picking up on sales, buying flats of jars (like you show in your video)...I can tell you with 100% certainty and my 30 years of canning experience that the current lids are thinner and have less adhesive (both in width and depth and the rubber itself seems to have changed). I still rarely have failures with my 10 year old lids but I do have issues with the newer Ball lids. I even have some 40+ year old Kerr lids (with the gray rubber) and they are even thicker than my 10 year old bunch I bought. I did just get some new lids from Tattler 'disposable' lid, their answer to Ball lids shotages from a few years back. They too weighless and are thiner than the OLD lids but they are just as good as the currently made lids. We'll see. All that said, I do agree with your assesment that the lids which have been on the jar tops are used...they look like it and they act like it. Ball says they are ok to use, which is a head scratcher as it seems to say to me that used lids are ok to use?!? For now I keep them for dry storage but if I had to then I would use them and just keep an eye on the seals. Thanks for the vid. I agree.
Hi. Something was different. Since I open kettle can, I get to hear the ping of the lid when it seals. The lids bought in 2020, had a different sound when they sealed. Almost like a thud instead of a ping. The ones that I bought last fall that I’m using now, are actually pinging now. Agree with
In Australia we cant get jars or lids been like that since 2020. I have a stash of RM but now buy most canning goods from the USA. I now have tattlers and ball wide lids. I always use the ones that come with a new case of jars and i havent had any issues with jars not sealing and i canned up several hundred jars last summer... Wide lids are $18 a doz here plus post of $13 (if anyone has them )so just not viable to not to use the ones supplied on new jars. Even buying from USA is getting pricey atm due to our dollar only buys 68 c of yours. i do get where you are coming from tho...👍🏻🇦🇺
I’m wondering if you can fix them with a heat resistant liquid rubber or silicone or something. It must be possible. I mean that’s the way they’re made right.
I USE THEM!!! Because I live over 6000' in elevation all of mine seal because of the pressure FROM HIGHER ELEVATION when I buy a flat that comes with lids. I always use them and have never had them fail
I had a box of ball jars that had lids with the indentation in them. I didn’t notice until I had used them on 8 pints of pickled relish. None of them sealed so I had to empty the jars and re-can them.
I used a small leftover pimento jar to put the little bit of fig juice I had leftover. I was just going to put it in the fridge. I heard a pop and it was that jar! It’s still sealed. I also used several from the pkg like you showed on this video and two of them didn’t seal. 🤷🏻♀️
Very true! They are coming back into the stores. We’ve got them at the local grocery stores as well as the larger ones like Publix. Also for the past two years, I bought mine off EBay.
New canner here. Canned chili yesterday and when I took the rings off, I noticed the lids are off center and partly hanging over jar. Is this normal? They sealed but I'm leary
@@useful.knowledge yes..11# of pressure for 90 minutes. But all the new lids are like this. They overlap the jar on one side no matter how I place them. They are even with the jar on one side and overlap the other side.
I use tattler gaskets on all of my metal lids now. You can order just the gaskets I got 100 small mouth for 25 dollars and 100 wide mouth for 28 dollars. Just place the gasket over the one on the metal canning lid. They are reusable. I got mine from harvest Guard. RoseRed Homstead has a video on how to do this
I agree that you are right! The lids do look compromised, but replacing with NEW Ball lids plays right into the Ball Company's profit. They profit from your additional purchase! If you buy the replacement lids from ForJars or another manufacturer and notified Ball as to why, they may flip the lids over when packaging to protect the seal and cut down on competitors profits.

l use compromised lids on jars of goods, which do not need a 'canned' seal, (i.e. dry foods, sewing supplies, extra veggie seeds, etc.) For lids w/pinch of rust &/or jars w/tiny chips, l store smaller items in garage, which tend to end up having no specific place, (i.e. extra nuts, bolts, screws, washers, nails, etc). Have made a couple of hanging mobiles to help keep garden goodies safe.
Would love to hear ideas, for any other extra uses, for compromised lids.
Thanks again for 'useful info'.
Great ideas!!! Wow!! Thanks for sharing!
I have seen that and also have stored brand new jars and lids in a shed outside in the heat. I have always used the lids and thought they might fail for the reasons you state. I have never had a jar fail to seal. You are being careful and that's a good idea! But for me, it's been ok so far!
Thanks for sharing!
Totally agree. Never had a failure with these! Well....unless it was user malfunction! 🙄😉
Thanks! I’ve had weird looking Ball lids (the rubber compound) many times this year. Looks “gooped” on instead of perfect like in the past.
The Kerr lids didn’t seal for me.
If you’re buying new lids you might as well invest in reusable lids like harvest guard. It will save you money really quick.
I've noticed that bringing home cases of jars in the heat of summer seals lids on my way home! I hear them popping!
Exactly what happened to me. And those lids have the compound compromised in my opinion.
Perfectly normal and fine. Been using these for years with zero issues.
Thanks for sharing!
Agree. Plus we don’t know how old they are, or what their storage conditions were.
Great point. I'm about to can some jalapeños using your method. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks! I’ve canned so many jalapeños this year. They just keep on producing. For the open kettle method just make sure you get the hot jalapeños in the hot jar and the lids on quickly. They seal every time.
@@useful.knowledge ok. Thank you! I'll let you know how they turn out.
Wow! Thanks!
That makes total sense!
Since I am I new canner, I could not figure why I had so many lid fails. Now I know!
@@cathyann6835 thanks I will try that
@@cathyann6835 I am super new to canning and wondered is it a problem to put a slightly damp lid on a jar before water bath canning… does that mess up the seal?
Great idea! Thanks and God Bless!
They use to pack the lids in a flat box that were under the jars wonder why they stopped that, thanks and a great job for letting us know
Hi. It’s probably a marketing ploy because they better on the shelf with the lids on.
Jars used to come in a full box, not a shallow flat. There was room to pack lids/ rings in a flat box under the jars. Miss those cardboard boxes to store my jars
Thanks for the heads up on that! I never would of thought about it..🤔
Thank you
Never would’ve thought about this
Whoa!! I have been using those lids. Thank you!
Wow! I never thought about that, thanks for the useful knowledge
Thank you so much for sharing. I’m new to canning and I watch your content all the time. I would’ve never paid any attention to that.
Thanks!!
I've had that complaint about those lids that come on the jars. But, I can't bring myself to throw them away. I usually leave them off for a couple of weeks then put them in really hot water. Then, I use them on things like applesauce.... never would I use them on meat, or something expensive.
Thanks for sharing!!
I am new to canning, this is a wonderful tip and I’m going to write it on the covers of my Ball books, bag and save for the dry goods thank you😉
Thanks!!
I was wondering about that. I had the same. I use them for dry goods. But not wet canning.
Thanks!!
I think you are right I've had several fails. I think I'll use them for vac seal but get new lids fir canning ...THANK YOU
Thanks!
Thanks!! Very interesting! That’s how they’re shipped down here and have for at least 10 years.
True and good info! I was gifted about 60 quart size jars in the spring. Some are really old. They are also really thick.
In south Alabama at Wal Mart ball jar lids are nearly $7.00 a box of 12.
Yeah they are not cheap but for about $.60 each is why I will by new ones instead of possibly losing a jar. How is LA? I miss my old stomping grounds.
Hi. It’s really does seem that your theory is very possible. Hot warehouses, stacked boxes, rings too tight. Thanks!
I used the lids that came with the jars. I lost all 12 jars of veggies. They sealed but let loose a d u sealed within 2 days. I always put the lids in warm water but it did not work. So Yes, they are compromised.
Wow!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing!! I’ll check it out.
The pickles smell will be gone and you can use the lids and jars over and over
Thanks for sharing!!
Ver well could have been the reason. They need to go packaging them separately. Thanks!
This was very useful! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks!
Funny I found this because I noticed it last week when canning. But, I have never had an issue with them not sealing. You made a great point. Have you reached out to the company?
Hi. Thanks! I haven’t reached out but some folks in the comments have. They basically were just given a new box of lids.
Thanks for sharing! I agree they seem thinner than the old lids. I’ve noticed that they sound a little different when the ping and seal.
I wondered about the same thing. Thanks!
@@useful.knowledge yes I think I will not use any lids that come on the jars !
Thanks ! Have you ever used the lids that I believe the name is Purr ?
Thanks for the information. Makes sense. Now where is the recipe for the peach jelly?
🤣Here is mine for Peach Jam. Peach Jam without Pectin | Useful Knowledge
ruclips.net/video/3RA1ORQxPvY/видео.html
Yep, that’s pretty significant
I found a jar that was misformed and could never be sealed. Now I check all my jars and lids when I get home with them.
Wow! Thanks for sharing!!
Great point. I canned 6 and 2 didn't seal, thought it was me. Great information!! From now on I will write used on them and use them for dry things I putbin. Thank you.
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this. I will no longer use them either. I'll just use them for dry goods and be careful even then.
That’s what I do. I put too much work into the goods I’m canning to risk it.
Thank you! I noticed the "seal" on the new unused jars too and the indentations on the lids. I have never had so many failures with Ball lids on new jars like I have lately. I thought I just hadn't noticed. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing!
Save & use them with the ' food saver' for dry products if you have one
So after canning you do not re-use the lids? You buy new ones with old jars? Thanks
Hi. That’s correct. Jars can be reused many times over. I use new lids each time.
Thank you for sharing 🙂❤.
When we heat the bands will the indentation go away?
From the comments, it’s a mixed bag. Some folks say yes but many experienced canners have said they’ve had real issues with these lids. That’s why I just don’t use them for canning.
PLEASE RESPOND
I dont understand
Wdym by compromised? Does it have contaminants, or lead, or??
No not lead or any contamination. The rubber compound on the lid has already been indented like it was sealed. It seems that many times they place the lids on too tight at the factory
@@useful.knowledge you responded fast! Thanks!!!
Very interesting for sure.. that would defiantly make sense if canning the way you have done with tomatoes.
Those jars and lids were obviously shipped where they got pretty darn hot to have sone that - if the indentation isn’t present I would still use them. But otherwise I would use foe dey dehydrated storage
It’s definitely hot in Alabama. Also, we never know how they are stored.
@@useful.knowledge I just saw this. I’m gonna do it.
I tried four jars of jelly, 3 didn’t hold. I’m not sure what I did.
But that water idea is great !!!
Bud, iv canned tons & I'm gonna tell ya, I'd never thought of what your sayin here bout the lids that come with it. But now havin watched & listened to your words I absolutely see what your sayin. Dang it man. Well, I can't fix behind me but I can do better from here on. Thank you Sir
Agree with
Can it still be used for vacuum sealing?
Yes, apparently lots of folks in the comments are doing this.
Thanks for sharing that info!
The only lids I have a problem with is Pur. High failure of not sealing. It was all I could find with the shortage last summer but never again.
I have bad reviews for Pur.
Thanks!
Lots of work to can so thank you very good info
True and thanks
Do you have a recipe for pumpkin jam or do I use equal amounts of fruit to sugar and then add spices?
I had a box of ball jars that had lids with the indentation in them. I didn’t notice until I had used them on 8 pints of pickled relish. None of them sealed so I had to empty the jars and re-can them.
Wow!! Thanks for sharing. We are see several comments like yours.
Have you used the plastic lids new ones yet?
Hi. I haven’t used the plastic ones.
I used a small leftover pimento jar to put the little bit of fig juice I had leftover. I was just going to put it in the fridge. I heard a pop and it was that jar! It’s still sealed. I also used several from the pkg like you showed on this video and two of them didn’t seal. 🤷🏻♀️
Wow!! Lots of folks have had bad experiences with those lids
I see what your saying on the kids but they are so hard to find right now.
Very true! They are coming back into the stores. We’ve got them at the local grocery stores as well as the larger ones like Publix. Also for the past two years, I bought mine off EBay.
I went to forjar lids and they come 100a pack and have been great. Like them a whole lot better
Never gave it any thought. This is great information. The company needs to put the lids in a separate container and not put on the jars.
Thanks! I agree!
New canner here. Canned chili yesterday and when I took the rings off, I noticed the lids are off center and partly hanging over jar. Is this normal? They sealed but I'm leary
Hi. Did you pressure can the chili?
@@useful.knowledge yes..11# of pressure for 90 minutes. But all the new lids are like this. They overlap the jar on one side no matter how I place them. They are even with the jar on one side and overlap the other side.
@@LisaReese-p4t interesting! Are they Ball or Kerr lids?
They are ball jars and lids. Brand New case
Never new that. Thanks for the info. But I’ve never had trouble with the kids that came with the jars.
Thanks. We are getting comments like yours and other experienced folks that are losing jars.
Thank you for this information 👍
WOW thanks for sharing 👍
You can use rubber gaskets. I do. Warm them first.
I used do the same but I have learned they work just the same if we heat them up with water before using them. I have no problem with them.
Interesting observation!!! I’ll check on the ForJars lids. Thanks!
@@useful.knowledge For Jar lids are great! Been using them awhile now..no failures at all! Have lost count of the Ball lid failures (from boxes..not new jars) I highly recommend the For Jars
That's why they are to be boiled.
Didn’t throw out the factory lids. Use those for vacuum sealing. They’re perfect if that. I totally see what you’re saying. I’ve gone both ways.
Great video!!!
Thanks!!
I got a new box of qt jars,, one flat had no seal on it at all. Have never seen this before.
Wow!!
I have never had any problems, yet, with the lids that come with the jars.
