This is a specialty keyboard which uses simplified (SKBM) Alps switches, as opposed to the complicated (SKCM) switches I've reviewed so far. Very clicky but rather clunky. This is a modern keyboard and you can still get it!
The practice sentence was: "Hello my name is Thomas and I'm typing on a BigKeys LX right now. This is rather a nightmare to type on for myself, but I guess it's a pretty decent keyboard to get started on for the little ones." Наука
I suspect they did away with the typematic function to prevent accidental entries at nuclear facilities xD
NONONONONO ABORT ABORT ABOOOOORT GODDAMMIT
+Chyrosran22 hahahaha
Maybe that's what happened at Chernobyl
As a resident of Tennessee I gotta say that southern accent WAS FUCKING PERFECT
:D
N U C L E A R P O W E R P L A N T S
it was N U C L E A R E N E R G Y P L A N T S nerd
@@Tasteful_. 3:20 you guys are both right I guess
>not N U C U L A R P O W E R P L A N T S
I blame binge-watching Family Feud for the accent :p .
I live in the hollers of Tennessee - and I got a good laugh out of it. I also got a good laugh out of "mastodonic" - you have the best adjectives, man.
Thanks, even as a kid I was known for my exotic descriptions xD .
Accent was close, but in North Carolina we don't say "ville" we say it as "vull" like "bull"
"Hunnersvull" then? xD
yeaaahhhh there we go
We do a lot of shortening around here at least in Appalachia. Like I live near three towns called Kings Mountain, Bessemer City, and Cherryville. Kings Mountain is normal, but the others are respectively "Bess'mer City" and "Churrvull"
In all fairness, you've got nothing on the Brits, they really mangle their place names and in really weird names. Cholmondeley becomes "Chumley", Trottiscliffe becomes "Trozley" and Godmanchester "Gomster", for example xD .
True enough
i like how the keys are color coded by vowels (??) instead of telling you where your fingers should go
Makes sense for small children still learning the alphabet
I've no problem visualizing Homer Simpson using one of theese :)
hey man! my mother has worked with special needs kids since the early 2000s, and one time she described to me a keyboard she really loved using when she would complete paperwork in the student computer lab; she outlined a keyboard with giant keys, that was ridiculously loud to type on, and it was only after it was sent away that she learned it was for one of her students, and did not in fact belong to the school! i immediately thought of this video upon hearing her description, and she confirmed that this was the model she worked with! really cool to see a alps switches put to real use!
Somebody needs to send this guy the redragon alien keyboard. That is the largest 60% board I have ever seen in my life
I've seen other RUclipsrs like Lazy Game Reviews, uxwbill and I think vwestlife make videos about these GreyStone keyboards. I suspect the reason wny the keys don't fire continuously when you hold them down is to stop chidren from typing one single character across the screen by holding the key down, but this can also be prevented by turning off the keyboard repeat feature in your operating system's keyboard settings. Most of the games I play require heavy use of the arrow keys and control and alt keys, this keyboard with its oddly positioned control key would make such games very uncomfortable to play.
I'm from North Carolina and I can personally say that
1)not all people speak that way
2)you have a better accent than most people that speak in it
Good job, Chyrosran
I commend you for your dedication in using this keyboard for a week.
I get that the layout sucks but my school uses shitty rubber domes... id love to have an alps board at school
south carolina accent is amazing, as is the video, thanks for making it, this is my favourite channel.
Thank you very much :) .
Why the hell would you train your kid on a non-standard layout? Are you trying to cripple them for life?
Nah, just buy your regular keyboard, and move the keycaps to an alphabetical order, and install an alphabetical layout file :)
@@Liggliluff That's even worse
Us folks that had a Speak&Spell as a kid came out all right.
Hell ya
@@CptJistuce you didn't though, half of you can't touch type.
I love your voice. You should be on the radio.
I saw one of these in a charity shop all of a few hours ago, and was going to suggest you review one (thought it was buckling spring actually). Lo and behold, you have one!
spending a week with this kooky keyboard has affected your brain xD
great review though! :D
Still sounds way better than the "thocciest" cherry style keyboards you see on youtube shorts
When I saw the picture for this video, I was thinking about buying a vowel.
The intentional single key press when holding a key down can actually be a great limitation to have when teaching computers/keyboards. I don't know about kids in particular, maybe really, really young ones might need it. However, old people constantly have this problem. So they have decided that they need to type something. They will now look down at the keyboard and carefully scan for that first key they need to enter. Then they will press it down and hold it down. Then they will look at the computer screen to ensure that the key has been entered. Then they look back down at the keyboard and, finally, release the key. And repeat.
as a native carolinian i approve of ur southern accent
8:57, that is actually an issue with some browsers. Some view inputs as 1 when you press and let go of the key. Where others will trigger a input every 0.001 second or something like that.
This causes me to always write some script to try and fix or correct it.
From this example, I'm guessing the automatic input is actually triggered by the keyboard and the browsers mimic it, but the weird browsers ignore it.
Interestingly, I've honestly always thought it was just the browsers jacking with me, but this makes sense.
Completely unrelated, but I learned something :D
Alright, after looking up I found some stuff out and why this happens.
Typically the circuits in a keyboard are a grid-like pattern. A control cycles through the different rows or what ever they are called and checks if a key is down.
Here is where it tells the OS blank key is being pressed.
The OS then passes this to the browser or application, where if views it as tons of key strokes.
However, some browsers and OSs will ignore them and only trigger each time the key is actually pressed. I'm not exactly sure on how or why this happens, but none the less it is a pain when dealing with JS and browser compatibility.
Which as I mentioned above, in most cases requires some sort of middle script to create the same input type on all devices.
Actually you didn't do that shit on the southern accent.
The only thing you really did wrong was pronounce out 'ville' - in the south, they say 'vul'
E.g. Nashville rhymes with bashful. "Ah ain't bayshful, ah'm from Nayshvul!"
Haha, cool, I'll remember that :) .
And the l's in yall are softer in the south east, almost like 'yaw'.
So the yellow keys are obviously coded to vowels, but is there any significance to the other colors? I'm not really picking up on any commonalities between those sets of letters.
Got some BigKeys Plus keyboards from my school (two QWERTY one ABC) but they all have AT connectors, maybe they were modded?
Never subscribe to anything, me being a Max Stirner adept and all...so Stirner was a teacher and so are you. I subcribe. You have been kind. And you actually learned me a fucking lot about keyboards! Cheers!
Know I'm late and all but the keys only firing for 8ms is probably a feature intended to help people who are physically disabled like people with MS so if they press a key for too long it doesn't just mess up their words. Cool keyboard!
I looked at their faq page and you can disable the "no run on" feature that prevents you from running forward in games. There should be a config prompt when plugging it in.
Definitely no config prompt.
From Georgia, your accent impression wasn't all that bad tbh, you were close
Inches??? What's that in metric 12.472 homicidalmeters?
You seem to hold topre in high regards on your older video, I wonder what had changed🤔
So that is your southern loving voice... making us feel comfortable.
This would be perfect for the elderly who don't own a computer. I've noticed elderly customers at my work when they need to type hold down the key for quite a few seconds and the characters repeat.
Really? Wow, so it IS useful, thanks for pointing this out :) .
+Chyrosran22 Well not $160 useful but you know...
I think I sold one of them for £10 or £20 or something, not many other people were interested xD .
You gotta new subscriber! - I like you!
I want to smash that enter key like a nuclear launch button
I lawl'd a lot watching this one a lot. To damn funny man. Don't like the keyboard, but you know the sound is not that bad. Any other keyboards you reviewed or have have these switches?
I have another keyboard with simplified white Alps that I might review in the future, but none that I've reviewed before. These switches were used in quite a few keyboards tbh.
nice dude
If you can still get it, and Alps stopped making keyboard switches, then what switches do they use?
This is one of the occasions where an ortholinear layout is acceptable, but only in those “NUCLEAR ENERGY PLANTS” where you wear a hazmat suit.
8:32 an osu! player singeltapping a 200BPM stream
(the tapping and the music kind of fits together lol)
Random people reacting to someone's fake accent: "omg i couldn't even tell you were faking an accent i thoughtit was real!!!"
The accent: 2:23
I have one of those things. I got it brand new in the box at a thrift store for $5. Mine is PS/2, and has that ABC/QWERTY switch.
One thing not mentioned in the video is the key rollover. I tested mine to only have 2KRO, which is terrible for a mechanical keyboard. And for some reason, the F key actually activates when you let go of the key, not when you press it.
Definitely a weird keyboard.
LGR did review the Mac version, and he used the keyboard to play Duke Nukem 3D.
love the accent
I wanted to get an ortholinear keyboard and now I know I can get one of these instead of building a Planck. Problem solved!!
(1:00) Calling it a QWERTY keyboard is a misnomer. Isn't it a UK English keyboard? Because there's plenty of QWERTY keyboards out there, including multiple English QWERTY keyboards.
Huh. The lgr review does show the original allowing keys to be held down.
I'd guess that the keys only remaining active for 8-16ms is so that kids holding down a letter key while typing slowly don't trigger it to repeat.
Yeah, I figured something like that, but kids would learn pretty quickly not to keep a key depressed so I'm not sure how useful it is xD .
I think these where built to stand up to 4 and 5 year old kindergarten students more than any other age range, which is why they have the ABC layout option, and at that age kids learning not to hold down a key does not always register as fast as you would think it would as they are still trying to learn their Alphabet, and how to read.
WHYYY are the keycaps colored in this exact pattern?? damn I dunno
3 stabilizer wow !
What's that? Chyros correctly utilizing imperial units? I don't believe my ears.
i misheard that as "nuclear powered plants"
Haha the accent was pretty good ;-)
Funniest gaming demo Haha!
you should try get a ducky from somewhere, easily the most solid keyboards I know of even compared with vintage boards, shame they use cherry switches only at the moment though
What would you say is their toughest board?
Chyrosran22
not 100% sure edit: possibly the old Ducky Legend, it doesn't have doubleshot caps or anything like the latest Ducky boards but the top case is simply a 5MM thick aluminium sheet, so combined with the steel plate that thing should be an absolute tank. I have never used or seen one so I don't know how it's constructed, but provided they filled the gap between the plate and top case with something like the did on the one (the one is just plastic all the way down from the top case to the plate with no gap) then it should be insanely strong, because obviously I doubt they have metal touching metal but even if it goes pcb - steel plate - plastic - aluminium top plate, considering ducky never seem to leave any gaps in their boards, it's going to be a solid chunk of material for about 3CM+ - so as I said, I've never used one but it must be extremely solid.
I've only used their One TKL and an older Shine for barely any time at all. The One TKL is solid, with the plastic being so thick that it actually touches the plate (no gap between plate and plastic meaning it's about 1CM thick).
The One and Shine 5 are the only current Ducky boards aside from some upcoming bluetooth one.
But there is a quirk - the plastic for the bezel goes past the plate yet sits above the top case with the top case only being above the plate, not the top bezel.
So what happens is simple, if you try bend it it doesn't move at all... except it makes a fairly loud creaking noise. So despite it not actually moving at all (more than a couple of mm is all you can bend it, you can't even see the bend).
So basically, it's extremely solid and a lot more solid than you'd have expected from a keyboard that makes so much noise when you do try bend it. It doesn't make noise because it's badly built, rather just a slightly odd design choice which I think was mainly down to aesthetics rather than anything else.
Either way, unless you're deliberately doing what I just said there isn't even a MM of flex, try press the case anywhere around the keys and it just doesn't move at all, because the plastic as I said above is so thick it touches the plate, so basically you're pushing against the super thick top case and steel plate + PCB together so it's like 2-3cm thick of material you're pushing against, plus the bottom case.
So really, quite similar to how you'd expect a vintage keyboard to be, no skimping on the thickness of materials anywhere.
No idea how the more expensive Ducky Shine 5 fares, I believe it may use a different OEM, could be worse, could be better. I know it's well liked anyway.
There are loads of keycap choices on the Ducky One and some really odd options as well - the ABS caps are doubleshot ABS with translucent legends... even on non backlit models. Although there is another option, red legends on the exact same otherwise doubleshot ABS keycaps.
And then finally, the models with non black keycaps have PBT dye sub keycaps of various colours. Except white ones with white ABS doubleshot. The caps aren't crazily thick but they're not half bad, just normal thickness.
So there are huge amounts of variety and the One, even ones with transparent coloured cases.
That's why it's sad that they still only use Cherry - if they used Gaterons they'd be a dream, because you won't find any keyboards with so many options from stock anywhere.
OK The Legend, according to the spec sheet, weighs 1.47 kg. There's no way something as light as that will hold up to something like a Battleship, 4707, or most Hall effect boards :p .
I'm sure they're very tough for modern boards, but I think if you saw and felt some proper vintage boards, you'd be amazed ;) .
Chyrosran22
oh yeah some of the old vintage boards for sure like the model f are going to be a lot stronger (for obvious reasons), but the Ducky boards are firmly inside the range of Model Ms in terms of rigidity - looking at your unicomp video, the Ducky i have flexes no more than the industrial model m does (or possibly less) and far less than the unicomp, which isn't a bad showing. Even given that it weighs less, at least the one due to it's construction is stronger than it should be.
Also keep in mind most of these new boards lack height (in upwards and top bezel), that's worth about 200G alone because there is just gonna be more material there.
The Legend's top cover is aluminium which is fairly light, but once it's 5MM thick combined with the rest of the chassis I doubt you'd be able to get any bend in it at all.
So yeah, it won't be as solid as a model F, but I'd be willing to bet most Model Ms would have a hard time even if the earlier ones do weigh far more. And certainly the later ones aren't even close, the Ducky One I have here which is a plastic case and steel plate is quite easily the stronger product.
I loved the North Carolina accent! I'm from Greensboro and it sounds just like me 🤪🤪
I'm from Huntersville - it was great! ;)
First. Nope. Thomas was the first. :P Thanks for the review!
About hunting and pecking, that's the *only* way I can type *mind blown*
Can you do a Sumvision keyboard? Because I use one (and I have used 2), they are very good.
The plastic on that keyboard is more hollow than my heart
What's the software you use to test the input?
Switch Hitter.
Thanks :D
Once children gain proficiency with this idiotic keyboard, they'll probably never recover fully.
At least it's mechanical!
Eh. Ortholinear will probably encourage bettet typing habits in terms of which finger is responsible for which letter.
i remember seeing that exact keyboard on a PC in a special needs class at school before. it was white instead of colorful.
I literally just bought one off of ebay for £5. Did I do good?
I don't know, what do you think? ;)
harvest the switches and build something cool :)
I am currently typing this comment on one of these keyboards and I can confidently say that this is the worst typing experience I've ever had.
Switches are alright though.
i am looking for a tkl alps switch keyboard what should i get ?
Unless you want a custom, they don't exist.
+Chyrosran22 hpw much will a custom cost and how so i do it i have no idep about cuatom boards
In all fairness that's neither TKL nor Alps though ;p .
I guess so xD . There are some navless old Alps keyboards which I guess are space-saving in a way, just in the opposite way xD .
+The Paulotron Let's Plays How and where do i get those
X key not being properly seated triggers me
How the hell a kids modern keyboard still have alps switches? I just wanted one single nice modern keyboard besides matias that has some alps in them, even if clones
Just the sound of it sounds better than any of the shitty cherry keyboard youtube is pushing on me through shorts. And its a fucking kid's keyboard
Hey that's funny. Huntersville is like 20 mins away from where I live.
So you're from North Carolina then? Was my impression horrible? xD
I'm about 3 hours straight down from Huntersville in South Carolina, and your accent would need to be way more thick for North Carolina, but might pass it pass in parts of S. Carolina but just barely ;-) lol!
Wait, the North Carolina accent is STRONGER than the South Carolina one? Oo
Chyrosran22 Depends on which parts you go to. I live in Charlotte and I think we all sound normal, but whenever I talk on teamspeak everyone seems to think I sound extremely southern so IDK. But yes, it was horrible. xD
Chyrosran22 like Kang said it depends on what part of NC you are going too, I use to have family in the Shelby NC area as a kid(most of them are dead from old age now) and the accent was so thick I could not understand what they were saying 1/2 the time lol. and same can be said for SC go towards the middle of the state, or up state, and it changes a good bit.
gastonya and hntersville
man. I'm falling in love with alps. I have some blacks from a Bigfoot I want to transplant into a more modern design but I would preferably use oranges. so hard to find oranges on eBay though ;/
Nah man, they come in many Apple keyboards. Oranges are WAY better than blacks IMO though. But whatever you do; get a clean one!
Dang. Youre not the first person who has said oranges are far superior. I guess im going to have to be patient to find one.
Yes, patience is key! And remember; there's always a better switch, the hunt never stops! ;)
Matias makes ALPS clones that you can buy individually.
Hannersville Narth Caarolayna y'all
you think the simplified switch is hard to put back together? try reassembling an SMK switch... good luck with that.... xD
Have done, in fact that's coming in a video soon :p . I'm not sure I managed to put that switch back together actually xD .
i had to put 7 back together. in the end, i was missing one wire so i made it with a paper clip. still works fine XD
It is a nightmare to use
Accent actually wasn't all too bad
Why are keyboards geared toward factory use always mechanical switches? Why do they not just go with cheap, easily replaceable rubber domes with dust covers?
While granted I don't work in a factory, I have a job that necessitates frequently using a keyboard with very dirty hands. Usually places I've been use cheap ass keyboards with dust covers or plastic bags over them.
I do recognize that this one has particular usage for people wearing bulky gloves, but there are many with normal sized keys that are geared toward factory use.
the biggest 60% ever lol
i found a yellow unit for 8 bucks
lmfao sounds just like it does here
These weak keycaps really hold up to the abuse toddlers bring to them? I expected them to be bigger.
If i have a child they will learn to type on a Model M.
Good one

Weezer board
Horrible cam shake
What the point in a board like this? All you're doing it teaching kids bad keyboard habits. Good luck getting them to unlearn that shit once they are older and need to use the big boy stuff.
Kids ain't robots, especially if they start with touchtyping.
Red Phoenix Not on this board they won't.
My thoughts exactly.
Kids wih disabilities for example low vision, slow motor skills (impair). "The keyboard has an option of assist mode to accommodate those who cannot press two or more keys simultaneously. NO RUN-ON FEATURE: only one keystroke is sent to the computer for each key depression, sent on release. This feature prevents multiple characters that might occurinadvertently when holding down a key for long periods".
That accent wasn't awful, but please never do it again.
Bruh you could buy a K68 gaming keyboard and have a much better experience that this mess!
