I was the training manager at Symbolics and we decorated our new training centers with mauve and gray. Digital Equipment used to be a hub of Orange and Brown, but they also moved away from that. PDP-11s and 10s moved to trendier colors.
Symbolics was my favorite company to work for. I was mostly out of Westwood office 2nd floor but spent a lot of time with SGD on the 3rd floor. Traveled a lot in the first couple of years.

For example. mercury has a density of 13.69g, therefore for every 1 ml or cm3 of mercury, it weights 13.69 grams. The values mentioned here consider that the mercury is in liquid state. If it goes solid or gas or even rises or lowers temperature, the density changes.
By the way, note the “repeat” key. Many (most? all?) keyboards didn’t have autorepeat in those days, so you had to hold this down together with whatever other key to make it repeat. I remember thinking, when I first came across autorepeat, that I could press a repeat key faster than waiting for the autorepeat to kick in.
Yeah, I choose a suitably short autorepeat interval, too. Also I remember touch-typing courses saying to “type as though the keys are red-hot”. So it all works well. ;)
I will never get tired of your videos. Your voice alone is great! I also think you may make the most in depth technical videos I've seen that also have a bit of levity. Many technical videos, while well produced, don't add in a bit of humor to make the videos more interesting and captivating. So, carry on with your videos. Your fans love ya.

I was looking up Symbolics stuff and found this video. I'm reminded of a keyboard I used that was from the early 1970s. It was for a TeleMation video character generator, a bit like a Chyron. Its keyboard was a tall affair that had to be sunk into a tabletop. The switches were long cylinders with magnets on the ends of plungers attached to the keycap. They traveled past a set of magnetic reed switches in quadrature. I was messing with this in the mid 1980s. All of the reed switches had become magnetized, and the thing would repeat keys all over the place. My 16 year-old self had delusions of grandeur of hacking a Commodore keyboard into the matrix, before I knew what a keyboard matrix was. Oh well.
4:49 Emacs still uses the terms “meta” and “super” for generic modifier keys. These days “meta” maps to the alt key, and “super” to the Windows/Linux key. Not sure what happened to “hyper” ...
"hyper" is still available as a modifier key on Linux - just browse your Xorg keyboard layout and keyboard shortcut settings (on Gnome). However, since it lacks a physical button nowadays, I doubt there's any application that uses it by default. I'm sure you could bind it to the right Win button or something... :)
well, the company was called Symbolics because the main paradigm for Lisp is Symbolic Programming. Symbolic Expressions are in fact the data structures loaded in memory, not the parenthetical syntax, these expressions formed with data structures are supposed to be symbolic structures, and the goal of Symbolic Programming is to be able to attribute any meaning you want to these symbolic structures while running as we humans do with the symbols we have in our mind. McCarthy based the Architecture of Lisp on a model of the mind by psychologists in that time.

Well I'm glad you decided to continue on with the videos. I've gotten into keyboards lately but this channel has opened me up to all these vintage keyboards and their variety of crazy switch mechanisms. It makes me want to try them all!

The character code of all 1s was the “rub out” character, which was conventionally ignored by tape input programs, and hence could be used to cover up mispunches in this way. You see the vestige of this in ASCII, where character code 127 (seven 1s) is DEL (aka RUBOUT) -- the only control code which is not in the 0-31 range.

I've been watching your videos for a while and they made me get a buckling spring keyboard for myself. Previously i've used a slider with dome Fujitsu SK2500-2D and a rubber dome Keytronic KT-1000. Now i'm happily typing with a Unicomp M122 and the difference in typing feel is astonishing. I'll never ever go back to rubber domes. Even friends with MX Blue switch boards tell me they'd rather type on my badass model M. Oh, bigger really IS better!.

My ex was his secretary at the end; there were no keyboards of this type left, in fact very little hardware left over at all. I wish I looked harder after seeing this video, though!
This is a very interesting and informative presentation, however I'd like to suggest an alternative explanation for why the Lisp machines company you speak of @2:53+ chose the name "Symbolics": I think it *might* have been named after a key technical software product developed in Maclisp and bought from MIT by the company, the product was called Macsyma, it still has that name, it's a symbolic mathematical algebra program, it was born in an era when computing helped symbolic mathematics take off, and I think Symbolics took their name from not only this landmark product but by taking in hand the realisation that the presentation and manipulation of symbol systems is at the heart, not only of those branches of mathematics on which all numerical constructs can be represented using symbol systems, and solved by manipulation of those symbol systems, but also of the advent of the GUI in which icons and the system is presented to the user symbolically, as well as the fact programming enlists abstract concepts represented in symbolic fashion. That's after thinking about it, but in short I expect Macsyma was the key product which drove the selection of that name, a symbolic mathematics product. Symbolics are one of the most innovative computer companies ever, in my opinion.

Man, I know the Honeywell Hall effect switches are legendary and all, but those caps are what bring it home for me. I wonder how this keyboard would sound in a case...
Why don't they make such quality anymore? I mean those keycaps are bloody gorgeous. From a time when things had to look good as well as be useful and durable.
Simple answer: price. Many people have a hard enough time spending $100 on a keyboard with laser ablated keycaps. Imagine people having to pay even more for double shots and dye sublimed PBT. And that's just for keycaps. GMK keycaps on Massdrop are about $100. Imagine having massive boulders for keycaps. I could so see that being a minimum of $200. Granted I'm pulling that $200 price tag out my asshole but those keycaps are easily twice the weight of regular double shots.

The Honeywell Hall Effect key switches were rated for BILLIONS of operations, about 100 times as many as the key switches in modern keyboards. So they also normally came with double-shot key caps that would be as durable as the key switches. The contrasting color is a separate color of plastic that goes all the way through the key cap, rather than just being painted onto the surface, so it was impossible to wear off the legends.

It's apparently only a limited edition for the foreseeable future, but they plan on making a standard line as well later on. They hope it can bring about a better analogue experience as well as improving their typing feel.
i know nothing about keyboards, i still dont get the fuss over mechanical vs membrane, i own both types and really couldnt care less about which one im using as long as it works but i still really enjoy these videos! the history behind some of these is very interesting and a lot of them i never even knew existed (all of those terminal keys might as well be in an alien language, id really be interested in seeing someone utilize all of these different modifiers and see exactly what it is they do)

I’ve found that 236 msecs works perfectly for me. It’s fast enough and typos free at the same time. Fortunately I can chose any number on Linux

Many people map the Caps Lock key to the Hyper modifier.
I made hypers out of the menu key and the \ | key next to left shift (ISO keyboard)

It's the symbol for orthogonality, but I doubt most people would recognise that :p .
Since these are designed by computer scientists, I'm pretty sure they are meant to be the mathematical logic symbols, where ⊤ means True (tautology), ⊥ means False (contradiction), and A⊢B and B⊣A mean B is provable from A (a syntactic consequence).

Why don't they make such quality anymore? I mean those keycaps are bloody gorgeous. From a time when things had to look good as well as be useful and durable.
Simple answer: price. Many people have a hard enough time spending $100 on a keyboard with laser ablated keycaps. Imagine people having to pay even more for double shots and dye sublimed PBT. And that's just for keycaps. GMK keycaps on Massdrop are about $100. Imagine having massive boulders for keycaps. I could so see that being a minimum of $200. Granted I'm pulling that $200 price tag out my asshole but those keycaps are easily twice the weight of regular double shots.
The Honeywell Hall Effect key switches were rated for BILLIONS of operations, about 100 times as many as the key switches in modern keyboards. So they also normally came with double-shot key caps that would be as durable as the key switches. The contrasting color is a separate color of plastic that goes all the way through the key cap, rather than just being painted onto the surface, so it was impossible to wear off the legends.
Please keep going. Youre the only great keyboard channel!
My grandpa actually invented the Hall Effect keyboard. He worked for the MicroSwitch division of Honeywell.

@Chyrosran22 Will you be taking a look at the new Wooting Hall Effect keyboard? It's apparently only a limited edition for the foreseeable future, but they plan on making a standard line as well later on. They hope it can bring about a better analogue experience as well as improving their typing feel.
I'm in contact with the designers, I should be getting one at some point.

i know nothing about keyboards, i still dont get the fuss over mechanical vs membrane, i own both types and really couldnt care less about which one im using as long as it works but i still really enjoy these videos! the history behind some of these is very interesting and a lot of them i never even knew existed (all of those terminal keys might as well be in an alien language, id really be interested in seeing someone utilize all of these different modifiers and see exactly what it is they do)
@Chyrosran22 Do you know if any clones of this exist? This would be super useful for editing in LaTeX if one could map the Front/Green keys to latex commands such as \alpha and so on. Magnificent videos by the way!
