  • Shaking down my 20 foot trailer sailer for the 2023 season ahead, the wind went from nothing to 20 knots in an instant, I had to run reefing lines in while sailing into quite a choppy sea, then the engine broke down. But it was still fun and great to be sailing solo. At least i'm ready for some awesome adventures now! oh and i'm really sorry about the wind noise, totally messed that up!

So true! Thanks for the comment. I’ve since had another decent shakedown with a 70m passage, had a couple of issues but all good now with every confidence for the rest of the season. Happy sailing!⛵️

I'm gutted, i asked everywhere if they made a small 6 hp electric start engine and was told NO, the smallest was a 9.9hp, which is too heavy, so ive just bought a new 6hp mercury. I noticed you have an 8hp. Enjoyed your video and ive chickened out of calling into southwald a number of times, that walllooks as though it has teeth as the tide rips past it.

Ah no! Took me ages to work out what engine I needed, luckily our club mechanic had this one so I snapped it up, I’m trying to get one for a friend but seem to be incredibly hard to get hold of. Being 2 stroke as well, it weighs the same as a 5hp 4 stroke, about 27 kgs. I did write an article on it. Ah you should pop in at Southwold and come see us at the club. Easterlies can be a bit dodgy, especially on the ebb, but fortunately I’ve got a reasonable healthy relationship with the harbour wall- only coming close a few times, last time was being towed in with a broken rudder. Closest I’ve been to giving the wall a good survey!😁I’ve opted for the beach recovery a few times in dinghies😂boatedout.uk/2023/01/14/sizing-an-outboard-motor-for-a-small-yacht/

I don`t know if your outboard is a 2 stroke Yamaha 8hp or a 4 stroke. My 8hp 2 stroke played up very much the same, like it was not getting enough fuel, so I took it to the outboard doctor and he found a split in the diaphragm in the fuel pump. I haven`t run it yet since getting it fixed, but he said it was running well. Hopefully it is now all good.

Thanks for your comment, yes it’s a 2 stroke 8hp, I’ve just fully stripped it all and cleaned the carb etc prior to this shakedown, so I had every confidence in it before hand, I do tend to work on all my outboards. My conclusion was that there was a bit of air in the system and maybe I didn’t fully prime the hose again, as I disconnect the fuel line when the motor is raised, it ran for a bit before it stopped so reckon it may have used the fuel in the carb and then sucked a bit of air in. It seemed fine after wards. Now you’ve mentioned the fuel pump diaphragm I’ll look to going to that if it happens again, maybe another carb strip and clean first just be on the safe side. We get 5-6 knots of tide here so engine failure isn’t an option. Thanks for the heads up. I may as well check any way! Who knows you may have just saved me from a bad day out😂⛵️

@@boatedout Hope it all works out. we don`t have tides like that here but a working outboard is pretty important.

just came across your channel as iam 61 and never sailed I used to have speed boats but now I want to use wind so I am trying to learn from sites like yours and the Bumbling Sailor he's funny if you haven't seen his channel go and subscribe I've subscribed to yours and liked and will see how much I can learn before I get a sailboat for me and the wife but first I am going to get a small Boat first to get the hang on sailing as we have a reservoir up the road and its cheap to sail there and they have instructors as I want to sail around England then go down south and sail to the Caribbean then Miami Florida then go down through the canal then up to California stay for a bit then head south back through the canal and head to the Mediterranean well that the plan and will take a few years to complete I am a retired early mechanic through a back injury which I do have under control so I will make the boat as sail easy as possible basickly to operate most or all the sails from the cabin which i will build as i will be looking for a mid steering position and I've seen many convert them to cabins to join were they are split into two i won't rush the job I am perfient in welding fibreglassing as i used to work for a bus company and i used to do all the body repairs on them replacing or making new panels in fibreglass and spray painting the busses and coaches I've rebuilt caravans as a hobby and refitted and modernised them so the bodywork isn't a problem and I am an auto electrician and 240 as my dad was an electrician wiring house i used to give him a hand on the big jobs he had on my days off working for the RAC as a patrol i used to do 4 days on 4 days off but i usually worked 2 off them so i worked 6 on 2 off 12 hour shifts i loved my job i started at Rugby portland Cement which is no longer it was taken over by a Mexican company then midland red then the RAC so i have worked on all wheel transport from rolls royces to massive caterpillar bulldozers D9s and bigger still and dumper trucks so big the tires were 12 feet high so i think i can manage a 40 foot yacht when it comes closer to buying a second hand one i will modernise her with all the latest gear which is going to cost me a ton load of money but i want the best iam also going to put in a sound system to blow your mind with subs 12 inch it will sound fantastic as i love music and i will be able to plug my guitar in and amp it up stand on deck and blow some tunes out to the whales and fish we will all have a party
