    Totally get the "customer service" feeling. Too exhausting for me! Family Med docs are the real heroes

      I came across someone saying that medicine is “glorified customer service”. Some specialties serve directly the patient, and some other doctors.

    Love this look at Family Medicine--very accurate! I think you also got very lucky with your site. Your attending and staff sound stellar! The people you work with really make or break your experience. I, too, find myself exhausted after a day in Family Medicine and I need to recharge my introvert batteries. I definitely find myself unconsciously taking on my "customer service" persona in clinic (e.g. "Yes, hi, how can I help you today? ... I'd happy to help you with that" ✨) Something that often gets overlooked is how much mental health / therapy we do in primary care. Some days, you actually provide more therapy than overt medicine--which is so valuable because many people just want to feel heard and validated. I think introverts can thrive in Family Medicine if you love your fellows humans and take the time to recharge in solitude.

    Family medicine is so underrated
    Idk how its like in America but in the UK, if you work smart, you can make a lot of money and have a lot more free time, flexibility than any of the hospitalists except perhaps radiology but even that has (on calls and emergencies to deal with) and in GO u can do plenty of different things ranging from minor plastic surgery all the way to moonlighting in urgent care centres and A&E. It's the best kind of doctor you can be in this climate of NHS funding cuts and dropping salaries.
    I'm in my final year of family medicine residency (we call it GP training)

    Hey, Andy. A lot of eating. I was wondering how you'd respond to Family Med. My brother had a 4 decade+ career as a nationally-recognized family doc. I know the speciality and how it can create deep bonds of trust and commitment between physician and patients navigating the full spectrum of life. The grandma who told you that you'll be a great doctor is on to something. Congrats on completing this rotation and you continuing to share your experiences with your subscribers. What will you do if your next rotation has far less food? LOL!

    I think it’s actually extroverted introvert. You’re essentially introvert but you developed extroversion as a social skill in expense of your “psyche energy”. It’s like passive transport vs active transport. But hey I ain’t no expert.

    Hi Andy! Thanks for the vlog!
    For residency of Family Medicine, how difficult is it? How many hours per week does a typical FM resident work? Also, do FM residents have to be on call? I'm a premed, and I'm just wondering. Thank you!

    • @NoirFilleChante
      @NoirFilleChante 2 года назад

      Varies by rotation & program. Most programs are frontloaded with inpatient training, so inpatient weeks can run anywhere from 60-80 hours. Increasingly your hours become less as you do more outpatient shifts (unless you choose to do more inpatient electives). I would say by 3rd year most residents are probably working closer to 40-50 hour weeks.

    Family médecine in Norway is so far from 9-5. They do so insanely much more than every other doctor in the country. Working 60 hours a week is very normal!

The doc doesn't even show up until 8:45. It might help to realize that we, too, lead busy lives and we value our time as much as you value yours! In the future, please be more considerate.
