- The Blue Devils housed 15 minutes away from where I live on June 24th through the 25th. I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to document how the Blue Devils prepare their amazing productions. Like, Comment, Share, Enjoy!
A video like this show what hard work can do. Some kids ... especially many h.s. band kids ... complain because they have to repeat phrases a couple of times. I remember watching the Glassmen percussion section when they visited our community a few years ago. The repeated an 8 count phrase over and over again for about an hour until the instructor was satisfied. It takes a certain kind of mentality to do that. This is a great video ... and one that should be showed to all percussion sections.

Another thing that high school kids don’t understand is that every single person on the line genuinely enjoys what they’re doing, there’s a reason they ate lunch and then immediately went back to play together before they even had to, they don’t have the mindset of “we have to drum” they have the mindset of “we get to drum” and don’t think of it as a chore to do. Just something to think about
the guy in the middle at 3:25 has like the most perfect technique i have ever seen
that's me

After watching this and re-living my own D&B days, kudos to these kids and really every kid out there in drum corps land for the selfless dedication of time and effort to the activity. Although Blue Devils took the DCI title this year, there really are no losers out there. I'm sure each and every individual in every corps, did their best put forth their best performance at each and every show. As a spectator now, their effort can only be admired in my eyes. This is the glimpse of the future stars of this country and they will succeed in everything they do in their future.
36:55 "I'm gonna send you back to Arizona" 😂😂
19:39 the true connection of drumline brethren!!!
i love how laid back scott is
JD Dunklee yes
JD Dunklee yess
yesss
yessss
I had the privilege and honor to be around this amazing corp while they were in Ox. It amazes me how fast these brilliant young men and women learn and perfect their music/show. Thank you Damien for capturing these moments. It was nice meeting you and chatting briefly on the field:)
It's a joy to watch Scott Johnson teach.
Thanks so much for the video. My son is on the snare line for Blue Devils and it was wonderful getting to see him when I couldn't be there :)
Damien Masterson Productions awhhh thanks much. :)
I miss these days so much... Such an amazing corp. I absolutely love doing stuff like this, well, I did until my eyesight got to me. This is an amazing video. Favorited for sure!
is it just me or do you hate the sound of those tenors at the beginning
same
same
Parker Drum It basically sounds like they're hitting rimshots the entire time.
they’re probably tuned differently now than later
Ahhh that was probably so embarrassing at 47:55. That was one sick tenor break tho!
That's me every time I add a risky stick flip to anything haha
yeah that was painful to watch :-/
22:25 had me laughing so hard. hahaaa
Sweet video dude! Thanks! The warm-up at 13:50 brought back memories of '06! :D (bass 4)
Also, I can definitely see Jared's influence lol!
brandon likes 311.......officially coolest cat in town
pretty good taste for a 16 yo right
his mentor is the drummer for 311 lol
This is DOPE!!! It makes me feel like im there...But without my hype...hahahaha right on for this vid bro
Brandon is such a god at getting a stick out before playing if he drops it.
That first excercise is an amazing chop builder, or just something to chop out to. I love it.
Nice production, Damien, thanks for posting!! We didn't get to go see this (Zak was busy) so its great to see what we missed - good work!
Thanks for uploading this! I went to school here and unfortunately couldn't make it down, but now I can see what I missed.
I need one of those little pads on my snare drum
how much are they?
+Chris Boone no clue sorry dude
25 bucks.
www.lonestarpercussion.com/Practice-Classroom/Snare-Practice-Pads/Pearl-PAD-35LA-Lalo-Davila-Quick-Mount-Rehearsal-Practice-Pad.html
I'm a random wind storm. Shaky Shaky. You have to buy a mount for them too, though
34:40 scojo what was that?!?! lol
Him being cool as always
lol whats that bro tap at 19:38? hahaha awesome
You guys did a great job this year!!!!! :)
They definitely did.
Those Bass Drums sound awesome!
This is one of the hardest battery books ever written.
Except for yanno, SCV's. They got a 93 on finals for their book. They won best drums. Still, Blue Devils go hard as hell. I love BD.
Noah Rooney *sees 2017’s book* DAFUQ IS THIS SHIT 😂
Not unless you're saying marking time to it😂
That bass line is flawless, but it's nice to know that even the best snare line in the world is dirty as hell at times.
Top secret has a better snare line, those base drums weren't flawless, and yeah nothing is perfect.
@@Infinity-fn2kvTop secret doesn't have a better snare line. They're often more flashy and fun to watch for the layman but they're no where near as clean as BD.
Connor Sauby well that's where we disagree, I hear bd to be very choppy at times, while top secret's snare line sounds very clean even though their music is more difficult, and they add flare to it.
Infinity 436 you’re joking right. Top secrets music is elementary compared to this
Ethan Bates ya know what, how about we agree to disagree.
Thanks for posting! Love BD's!
22:27 is pure gold 😂
should've kept it in
This season of DCI probably really fucked up Brandon's spine.
Im in the Drumline at Snare! I Love Drumming!
my favorite show
Lmao I love how the whole snare line puts their scoops on Brandon's stand
Malburg36 your reply's are off. They are Pearl practice pads mounted on a snare accessory mount so if they have to practice something they don't have to do it at the volume of a shot gun.
Hoping to be apart of this drum corp In the future I still have alot to learn but im getting ther not a very hard decision to join the blue devils becuase there like the best drum and bugle corp In the world . "Keep up the good work"
For pearls why do these looks so perfect
the snare with the white hat is my battery instructor! ADAM!!!
What school?
Patriot High School in Jurupa Valley,California
Man....even the oldest of these guys wasn't even a lecherous gleam in their father's eye when I was in the corps. (84 soprano)
Yeah....I'm old!
Can I maybe get a sheet of all the warmups in this. Maybe not all but please. It'll help plenty for some. Thanks!
51:38 is that guy wearing a tie??
56:22 Is that a Soviet Union shirt?
One They Fear Yup lol
6:27 : WOW
Felt like i got punched
amazing precision! :)
10:42 the sign says “no noisemakers, horns, bells, sirens, etc.” I know that the sign is talking to the spectators, but it’s still ironic.
Did they change the tenor heads prior to "sterling"?
Armand Garrido I think it was just the mic placement
48:12 space chords in the background!
At 34:45 I feel like I'm watching a sitcom
The snares have a strange "ring" at the beginning of the video as if the guts are too tight. You can especially hear it when the center is counting off their first excersise. Anyone else hear that? Is this done purposely?
It's called an overtone. Just about most drums have one.
The ring will project the sound way more. If you're around most DCI lines you'll hear the ring from the snares.
you can’t hear it from far away. its louder when you’re near it and towards the edge of the head
i love when the bass drums ripple.
You mean split.
Bryce Dabney To-MAY-to , to-MAH-to
Supersickcrew You must obviously know nothing about marching band.
dude, calm your sticks. Doesn't matter.
Supersickcrew It really does
51:06 .... chills
Is anyone else wondering how the snares have scoops on when they are on stands?
It seems like the blue devils tenors always sound a bit more "metallic" i guess than everyone else. I dont know does anyone else get that?
Pretty nice. It was interesting.
Haha I was the scoop guy this past season lol. I can relate Brandon 35:00
awesome video! learned a few warmups from it too
okay but the snare w the white gauges that's three down for the right... daaamn
Andrew
if only crowns percussion were this good
did bass four march crown 2013?
Andrew Manzanares on snare shirt shout out to BDC! Awesome!
18:28 is black sweater guy supposed to be looking around and fidgeting?
Were they this hard on 16 year old Brandon the whole season? I kinda feel bad for him looking at this now.
13:26 why drop that quad so hard💔
does anybody have the transcription for the first warm up they did?
My lawd dem chops!
what mallets are the tenors using that have felt heads?
if i had a dollar for every pixel in this video i'd be richer than bill gates
Doesn't that guy in the hoodie on the far left at 23:38 seem like a nice and funny guy?
A(Two) day(s) with the BD 2014
Twos
2014 drummers: ;-;
2:14 is that brodie smith? blue shit left side of the screen
Lol. Read your comment aloud buddy.
I was thinking the same thing.
what camera do you use?
Is it just me, or are the tenors tuned/pitched weird?
What school is this I went to clay high n it was blue devils to
I know that marching band is extremely impossibly hard but man
Drum Corps is college marching band's beefed up cousin on steroids.
As someone not from the US this confuses the absolute hell out of me lol
Did anyone else notice 40:29
Gd oke bcs like music nd kidz is live in love
I've been wondering, do they have to pay for any sticks that they break over time or is that provided
Sticks are provided.
okay thanks
So basically someone could break many sticks as possible and get a pair without buying them?
+Jacob Lamb Blue Devils are endorsed by Promark. So they have a shipment of sticks that's given to them. If they need more sticks, Promark will send them more sticks. But they don't just try to break sticks on purpose.
What are the shiny plastic shields under the snares?
also what are they for?
They're made to amplify the snare noise to where ever it's pointed to.
They're called scoops
Scoops. They're used to direct the sound forward to the crowd rather than it all going straight down into the ground
What are those pads on the rim called? I've been looking for one but I have no clue what to search
God that's expensive for 3.5 inches
You've probably found them by now or gave up, but I believe they're called lalo pads.
The Bass 5's Leg was splitting the rest of the line in the warm up lol 1:40.
He was trying to push, the others wanted to drag.
Did the hornline have the day off?
Nah, Damien is just a snare player so he likes videotaping the drumline
The majority of popular drum corps videos are of the drum line so I guess I am just a conformist. There is definitely full ensemble stuff in there though so the horn line obviously didn't have the day off. Also, Alex plays trumpet for BD so he can tell you first hand, they didn't.
+Alex Tompkins they let you take pets on tour???
+Freddy Torres his family lives in the next city over so they brought his dog to say hi. Fun fact, today is day 1 of their 3 day stay in Oxnard. I'm typing this comment in the parking lot of the housing site.
+DamienMasterson oh. and nice!
what are those mini pads connected to the snares?
You can buy them on lonestar percussion. They are for silent hacking when director is speaking
Do they have jobs? Or are they studying?
I don't know how this works, can someone tell me, please?
Some are high schoolers and this all takes place during a high schools band camp so you kinda miss ur time at ur schools band camp while you're playing with bigger better people. Some are in college but that's a whole other story
What were the stick the snares were using(all)
dc50 system blue by promark
ProMark Scott Johnsons. Which are DC17s. Not DC50s.
oh my bad
Anyone else getting a lot of audio lag?
Shane Hoseth Nope.
Shane Hoseth No
There bass splits are the shit
#gedaljeights #shotski #gedalYAYYAYEE
The snares are cranked all the way up, they have no tone, sounds like you’re just hitting wood
Luke Cullen I passed on your critique to BD. They said ok as they were polishing their gold medals.
gunner 3477 in 2014 the blue devils actually had the lowest percussion score at the season finals 😐
@@Luke_Cullen They was still 2014 DCI World Champions. That's what in the record books, and that's what counts.
@@Luke_Cullen Dude stop spreading lies. You hate BD. That's your right and opinion. But stop the lies. Both percussion judges had BD in 2nd place all three nights at Finals. So where are you getting these so called low scores from? It's cool if you don't respond. Trolls normally don't answer when they get called out and facts thrown right in their face.
Where did all these hot guys come from..back in the day there were no hot guys in marching band..let alone them practicing shirtless...
Well this isn't marching band. It's drum corps. It's where band geeks become hot.
lol 19:38
why do they ring so bad!!! my ears hurt ( snares )
They really crank the heads down and tune them tight and high.
Pearl drums that's why.. a waste of money. Yamaha's, system blues, or dynasty drums are the absolute only ones to buy

ugh i hate the sound of those snares they have that ping!
chances are your snare sounds like shit if it doesnt have a ping to it
Jesus. Crunchfest regardless of how early it is in the season. Embarassing.
brodie smith a bass 5 lol
:)
I know I'm not alone in loving how DCI guys love to go shirtless. It is probably the only musical art form where high skill musicians have a sex appeal that goes beyond the appeal of musical skill, precision and creativity.
girl
19:38
Those drums are reefed
24:12, the tick in the black hoodie is looking down like he's the shit. Smh
He went on to be the center snare for 3 straight years so maybe he is💀
nahh Sean Clarke is goated.
dont understand why theres such a stigma against looking at your hands in rehearsal, how are you supposed to know if you're doing everything exactly right if you cant look at the damn things you play with
