- Can you use E10 fuel in your chainsaw? James and Ryan answer that very question on whether you can use E10 fuel in your STIHL chainsaw.
This video is part one of two videos where we will be comparing E10 fuel against STIHL MotoMix. STIHL MotoMix is an optimised 1:50 premixed fuel for all STIHL engines. The patented fuel formula and STIHL HP Ultra engine oil ensure maximum performance and offer a consistent level of protection for the internal components. In addition to ease of handling and environmental benefits, three key aspects are at the centre of STIHL fuels - people, machines and the environment.

I think the main problem with stale fuel isn't that your machine won't start, it's that it won't start at all, even if you put motomix after. Benzene, which is what regular pump gas contains, will stiffen rubber over time, especially if left sitting. Add a bit of alcohol to the mix, and that effect is intensified. I've seen 2-3 year old saws running pump gas needing carb membranes and fuel lines changed, but never saw such a problem in alkylated gas (motomix, aspen etc). If you're not cutting alot, or you plan to store your saws, fill them up with alkylated fuel. It's well worth the extra money.
I was considering buying a second hand (smaller like ms180) but seeing how cheap everyone is running regular gas.. i just might get a new one.. i run stihl gas in mine anyways.. cause most of the time u need a chainsaw like once a year.. or 2.. and its the worst when u got a tree down but ur saw doesnt start anymore..
Flooded!!! Add this video to your fitness playlist 😂 I will say in all honesty, the E-10 stored in the saw was not a surprise. I find fuel with oil mixed in stay viable much longer that plain petrol. In a container, I can see how it would degrade rapidly, and be a non-starter. Cheers!
Thank you Stella, very flooded 😂😂 it would be interesting to mix two batches up and see which one lasts longer 👍🏼
if you store fuel for any length of time you should use a steel/tin/aluminium container. Plastic is not the appropriate material for long-term storage.
Brilliant! Kinda knew what would happen, I tend to run all my saws dry, then fill the tank with a real small amount of motomix give it a run for a couple mins and then store 👌🏼 no issues for me
Exactly the right thing to do! Nice one Richard 👍🏼
The fuel will also evaporate and the 2-stroke oil won't, so you will get an increasing oilier mix as time goes on unless orc the container is 100% sealed.
Looks like you got more exercise on the video Ryan, than James gets when he goes to the gym….. 😂😂🍟🍕🍔
Hahaha, true story 😂😂
I use Husqvarna XP in my fuel, and It seems to keep it fresh for months on end!
Yeah it is certainly the same principle as an Alkylate fuel 👍🏼
Excellent video as usual!
Thank you Steve 😎
That air filter is trickery. I've never seen nothing so easy.
Slight of hand as we say in the magic business 😂
That was worth watching for a second time.
I use it in everything and have zero problems, merry Christmas James and family 😀👍
This bears out my experience with both Saws and mowers. I only buy Aspen fuel now.
Steve's Small Engine Saloon sent me. Looking forward to watching your channel.
Awesome, thank you for joining us 🤩
Little did he know the workout he was going to get today! My arms ached watching this 😂🤣
Still aching now 😂
@@MachineryNation 🤣
That boy is good at pulling! Must practice alot.
On the pull most Fridays 😂
Can't get my hands on motomix for love nor money, so I'm mixing stihl hp ultra ( because I have it ) with aspen 4 . It should be every bit if not better than motomix, up to 5 years with aspen. I've verified this with stihl as well, hp ultra lasts up to 5 years open or unopened. A pretty good combination 👌
Ideal John, Aspen also do a 2 stroke equivalent which has a fully synthetic oil mix. but what you are doing until you can get Motomix is just fine.
@@MachineryNation I know that cheers, I think I'll continue on with the way I'm going I'm happy with it, only reason I went for aspen 4 instead of aspen 2 was I had a brand new bottle of ultra (which is fully synthetic as well) and I didn't want to waste it. 😀
That was extremely entertaining 😂🤣 I'm glad you do these tests so we don't have to 😂
I’m glad Ryan done all the pulling 😂😂
🤣🤣great entertainment James & Ryan, well i just used my cheap strimmer not realizing i left a full tank of E10 mix @ 50.1 fuel in it 3 pulls and it started up and ran but not the way it should it was a little bit dull,i will be checking the carb at some point.
Thank you Nev, let us know what you find!
Nice One Ryan & James Informative and entertaining Thanks again
Thank you Darren 👍🏼
@@MachineryNation Wood that E10 burn if you put a match to it ? Thanks
Ok next time take it down to the local gym and let them have a go at it 😆 My arm hurts watching you guys geeeeeez ! 💪
Ryan was knackard after this 😂😂😂
I've started using Aspen, for this very reason.
No surprise. I use Non ethanol and red armor oil
Works great!
Great video and lots of fun to watch
Thank you Hoss 😂
experiment: try using a torch to see if that old E10 fuel still burns off like fresh E10 fuel
Found this to be very useful and probably have suffered from the issue of leaving fuel in for an extended period of time, I will definitely be more careful to drain and run dry in future before storing away. But my problem was because my MS 180 is at our property in France and I used it February 2019 with intentions of doing so again in May 2019, but covid restrictions scuppered all good intentions. So having finally having got there in June this year I got about 20 minutes use from the saw and it is now undergoing surgery (probably gummed up carb) at a local dealer, as I had to come back to uk but hopefully all will be well with it when I go back in September.
All u need to do is just run the stihl 2t gass with the chainsaw.. that gass is beter for the environment and also doesnt go bad.. so ur saw wont go bad every other time.. yes its more expensive.. but yea not many other options..if u run it dry u got more chance of dust/dirt getting in also..
This video is exactly why all i own are echo products. They always start.
From America to Canada to u. 👋👋👋 u tossing tools toss 1 to Rhode Island!
Welcome to the channel 🤩 going to take a break from tossing tool 😂
Very good lads
Thank you Robbie 🙏🏼
Haha yeah very good!- e10 ok for pro users or everyday use-
Bang on 💪🏼
If you left that choke on all that pulling it’s probably flooded and with the oil fuel mix turned more oil because of gas evaporation doesn’t help…a lot of times when it’s flooded it can be started holding the throttle wide open so it’ll get more air…oh yeah…ethanol sucks
Watch the video at 8mins 30secs I do exactly that 😂
@@MachineryNation …thought I heard it when you opened the throttle before it started…👍🏼
Next vlog how to change a pull cord on a stihl chain saw, keep up the great content
For sure 😂😂
So basically E10 is fine if you are constantly using your machines. If not, take it out of your machine or run it dry if you do not use your machine constantly. Is that right?
As I understand it yes.
Apparently Stihl Super and Ultra two stroke oils have fuel stabilisers that keeps your fuel usable for 3 months.
@@Saxondog Ok, thanks, we use that oil too.
Yes this can work, but watch your diaphragms & gaskets don’t dry out and go hard from lack of use.
Toller Test, aber das löst leider die Probleme nicht die wir haben!
Dieser ganze Bio Kraftstoff ist das Problem und muss endlich wieder verschwinden, wir hatten früher keine Probleme und heute haben wir nur noch Probleme
I’ve got 5l mixed up from before Christmas, I’m not feeling confident about it being any good.
Let me know if it’s any good Al. 🤞🏼
@@MachineryNation my Husqvarna 357, runs on it but not great. The McCulloch strimmer, won’t. It’s from last century.

Been waiting for this one! I think the battery stuff is seeming more and more attractive especially with the cost of fuel and special alkylate fuels.
Yeah for sure, I do like the battery stuff but nothing beats the sound of a 2 stroke chainsaw 😂
@@MachineryNation that's very true! Maybe they should start putting loudspeakers on the battery saws that make 2-stroke noises 😂
Hardly a ringing endorsement for Motomix. The moral seems to be Don't use old fuel of ANY SORT in a chainsaw.
Great video guys, Ryan worked bloody hard on this one.
Yeah he earnt his board and lodge this time 😂😂
Eh up Ryan! Not once did you attempt to start those saws incorrectly ... unlike our James ..tut, tut.
@@Saxondog 100% I was worried about his health so had to help him out 😂😂
Just goes to show that E10 fuel does nothing good to our small 2-stroke equipment. Thanks for this one guys. Hope the arm will survive
Thanks Claus, Ryan comes out of arm rehab tomorrow 😂
💪💪🤣🤣
Interesting results.. I love seeing two guys spending 20 my mins pulling away .
Hahahaha, we always think of you when we do this 🤦🏻♂️
Depends on what they’re pulling,lol!
@@andybecker2693 bahaha
Never brought premixed fuel never will ... just keep your fuel fresh and for storage just poor pure 2 stoke and fill the carbureter up it will keep the diaphragms nice and moist... 😋
I think even e5 after 6 months would have the same results!! Any saw not used for that length of time I would ditch any fuel init any way!
Wow how was it 6 months ago this started
I know right, time be flying! 🚀
Get a Husky
I am a huge Husqvarna product fan but it would be the same outcome 👍🏼
Husqvarna's burn off easy vs a Stihl they last longer the small ones from husqvarna only have one piston ring
Great video! I was wondering if aplies to e5 higher octane aswell and if so where to buy in uk strait gas?
E5 has its issues but is no where as bad as E10. I don’t believe you can buy ethanol free fuel in the UK. You would need to buy either Stihl Motomix, Husqvarna XP2 or Aspen. There are dealers of these all over the UK.
@@MachineryNation Thank you for info.
bet Ryan's glad he had his weetabix lol great fun guys
He been on a spinach diet all weekend 😂
I recommend the Echo Red Armor pre mix gas ⛽
My arm is aching almost as much as my sides watching that🤣🤣🤣 I bought some Aspen last month but haven't used it yet as I've still got some E10 mixed which I was hoping to use up first-could be a big mistake!
Haha thanks Al, it was interesting seeing the results 😎
How does fuel evaporate from a closed container? I keep my saws in the house over the winter in Canada and run them once a month. I used 91-93 octane and fuel stabilizer, never a problem. I hope you guys don’t start a repair channel….it’s bound to fail.
Those containers don’t have a good seal around the top. Funnily enough one of us in the video owns a machinery dealership where we employ 5 very talented technicians, thankfully the owner is not the one repairing the machines 👍🏼
That's the reason we have those annoying fuel spouts now. Their true purpose is to prevent evaporation.
I’m going straight to the garage and apologize to all my power equipment!
Hahahahahaha Randy 😂
that wrist action he wont be spanking the monkey for a while he damaged the wrist
Fuels expensive enough without moto mix 😢
Fuel is expensive your right. If you do petrol hedge trimming, try the Motomix instead of Unleaded and you will notice a massive difference 👍🏼
Want really good advice? Buy Aspen 4 (4 cycle alkylate fuel-blue 5 litre can). Mix this fuel 50:1 in a quantity you want or need with Red Armor oil for all your 2 cycle engines/machines. (Or whatever ratio your machine uses).
Use the 4 cycle in your 4 cycle engines, especially for storage, such as your lawnmover, outboard, generator, what ever you have that uses 4 cycle .
All fuel problems solved.😊😊😊
Aspen is the same principle as Motomix, it’s an alkylate fuel.
I’m interested to know why you would buy Aspen 4 and mix yourself when Aspen also have Apsen 2 which comes pre mixed? Do you prefer to do it this way?
@@MachineryNation Yes, this is the best of both worlds. The Red Armor 2 stroke oil is superior, basically the best 2 stroke oil you can buy. Chickanic and many others endorse it. The 2 stroke aspen is identical to the 4 stroke except that it has oil already added at the factory. But you cannot use the 2 stroke in your 4 stroke engines, such as your lawnmower etc.
I don’t use the Aspen 4 cycle except for when I am winterizing the engines, throughout the spring summer fall season I use 94 octane ethanol free gas ( that’s what’s available here…, use the highest octane non ethanol gas in your area).
I since I use my 2 stroke equipment only once very 2 weeks I use the Aspen with the Red Armor oil in those. They all start on the very first pull. Same with the 4 strokes after the winter. There are some very good videos on RUclips from Aspen and Motomix about the composition of their fuels. They don’t contain many of the bad chemicals nor ethanol and are therefore much costlier to produce. Here in Vancouver Canada I buy the blue 4 stroke Aspen 5 litre (1.3 gallon) container for $30, and it lasts me all year. The red Armor oil you can get at Home Depot. Like Chickanic says….80%!!! Of the equipment that comes to the shop come in with 1 problem. Bad fuel (gas) or bad fuel related problems, such as hardening of the fuel lines, diaphragms etc.
Hope you find this helpful. 😀
Mike
😂 please read the starting instruction… poor boy….! 😂
You need a bigger funnel.
Aspen is the only way .
Go Lectric¬
Great advice, but some people just love the sound of a “gas” powered saw 😉
I thought this was a channel about tools........NOT KEEP FIT 🤣😂
Hahaha, seems to be going that way 😂😂
I run the engine until it stall. Never leave any gaz in my 4-2 Strokes toys!
This can work. Although if left to long without fuel in, your gaskets will dry out and go hard, thus not allowing them to work correctly. I hope this helps 👍🏼
