    I’m of the opinion that, if you just look at mechanics, the Marid patron is the current best option in the game for making a warlock of Santa Claus. Genie patron overall gives you a magic bag that’s bigger on the inside, you get access to spells like Detect Naughty and Nice (Detect Evil and Good) or Create Cookies and Milk (Create Food and Water), you get that fly speed, and Marid specifically gives cold resistance. Additionally, I’d suggest Pact of the Tome for this build, because those new Tome-exclusive invocations literally involve making a list and checking it twice. And finally, while it’s not the best choice for a warlock to use as their combat cantrip, Magic Stone lets you chuck lumps of coal.

    The thing I like most about the Genie is that it's a Warlock patron that really rewards you for going straight Warlock. You get good features all the way through, rather than getting incredible nonsense at level 1 and then barely anything. I think and hope this will lead to more viable pure warlock builds.

    If it weren’t for the Aberrant Mind this would absolutely be my favorite subclass in Tasha’s. I get that the clerics are both OP but the flavor of these two subclasses is so good.
    The GenLock is so consistent with itself. Elemental damage & resistance, the hover & fly ability, the vessel, wish & limited wish - it does EXACTLY what it should to capture the idea of a consort to a powerful genie, and one specifically tied to a given elemental plane.

      Cheap teleportation but with the potential risk of being locked within your own vessel, as a classic genie.
      "...any items not taken from the chest reappear on the ground at your feet."
      If I understand that correctly, if the targeted person doesn't open the chest and the spell ends your vessel will reappear in front of you, while you are still inside your vessel. So if you leave your vessel, you will reappear in your vessel with your vessel in your hand.
      If you are lucky this paradox would open a gate to the Astral Plane. Otherwise, keep some spare coins within your vessel, recast the spell, and pray for the next targeted person to open the chest.

    Gotta say, warlocks made out *really* well in Tasha's. The new boon, invocations and spells are a benefit to patron options from other books, and the Eldritch Versatility gives you the option to have a major rebuild of your character at every ASI.

  • @deadxera
    @deadxera 3 года назад +19

    Tomelocks can still communicate with people outside their vessel if they take the Far Scribe invocation, as Sending works across planar boundaries - albeit with a 5% failure rate. Extra useful if you get your DM to let you put your familiar's name in the book, so you can issue commands to it while it carries the vessel.

  • @matthewdebeer8453
    @matthewdebeer8453 3 года назад +70

    One feature I think you didn't mention is - "if the vessel is destroyed, every object stored there harmlessly appears in the unoccupied spaces closest to the vessel’s former space." The fact that you can voluntarily destroy the vessel by summoning a new one makes this an interesting way of smuggling whatever fits in the vessel into a space you (or a familiar) can carry it into. Think incriminating evidence, explosives, jail-breaking equipment, etc.

    • @ITelefonmanI
      @ITelefonmanI 3 года назад +8

      Well, you can also fill it with stuff that has the potential to kill, e.g. boulders, 20x20ft of water, acid (this might require an errata - does damage from the inside destroy the vessel), poisioned gas, heck lava or creatures (preferably undead since they won't complain about being squished together or lack of food) is an option. Your vessel basically becomes anything between a Molotov cocktail to a bomb to a zombie spawner at that point.

    Spike Growth plus Repelling Blast plus Grasp of Hadar, maybe with Crusher in there, too, and your Daolock becomes a cheese-grater against any non-flying opponents. And if they don't have ranged attacks, they'll tear themselves to pieces trying to reach you, too.

    • @crookedclown9499
      @crookedclown9499 3 года назад +6

      If you went Variant Human with the Crusher Feat and took the Eldritch Adept feat (so you have Repelling Blast, Grasp of Hadar and Agonizing Blast, ensuing that you keep the enemy in the middle of the cheese grater) at level 4 you could do some serious damage when you hit level 5. (Assuming +3 CHA)
      You'd end up doing 2d10 + CHA(6) + GW (3) + 10d4 for an average of 45 points of damage, not including the damage that the enemy would incurr from moving through the spikes on their own turn. A fireball at the same level has an average damage of 28.

      to be useful (other then the move into air thing), you'd have to guess if you use the bludgeon damage on this attack or the next, if you get multiple blasts.
      because you want the bludgeon damage when you crit, and you can add that damage only once per turn.
      when the first blast doesn't crit but hits, you have to decide: do i use that damage now to be sure to add that extra damage or should i gamble for the next hit to add the bludgeon damage, because it could become a crit... but i could also miss...
      not a big fan of that idea. and most of the time, you can't use the advantage yourself, because the non-last blast has to crit, to have advantage in your own turn.

    Great video! I think you are slightly underrating the L10 ability. If safe long rests aren't an issue for the party, then you gain the ability to provide a nearly instant "extra" short rest that the DM basically can't disallow or disrupt. That means more spell slots than usual for you, more wild shapes than usual for the druid, more ki than usual for the monk, etc.
    Also, I want to mention the multiclass concept I'm currently playing: Dao-Lock 17/Echo Knight 3. I'm only at L3 now, but when I hit L6 I'll be pinging all over the battlefield, pushing/pulling foes into my Spike Growth. Can't wait!

I think, what is also interesting is a Fire Genasi Marid Genie Warlock being umaffected by any extreme Weather like heat or coldness, since you resist both cold and fire damage. The only thing that annoys me is how you are punished for doubling down, for example a Fire Gemase Efreeti only gains one damage resistance and not two

    Spike Growth is a fantastic spell for Warlocks that have taken the Crusher Feat and one or both of the invocations that push or pull an event hit with Eldritch Blast. Even if you had just the crusher feat, agonizing blast and the push invocation you would be doing incredible amounts of damage for just a level 3. 1d10+CHA+2(GW)+6d4 from Spike Growth. It's still an amazing combo even at higher levels when you are soaring through the air and launching three eldritch blast at a target to push and pull them across the spikes, not even counting them moving on their own turn.

And if your warlock get's thrown in jail, you can stick your hand trough the bars and enter your vessel. The ring then falls to the ground, and when you emerge you're outside your cell.

    Limited Wish is really fun for blanket access to spells that are useless until suddenly they really, really aren't. Water Breathing is a good example -- someone's whiffed a Teleport and now you're 18 miles out to sea, or you just got planeshifted to the Elemental Plane of Water, or any other circumstance where you've suddenly been dropped into a place where breathing is suddenly a concern where it wouldn't normally be. Protection from Evil and Good is niche but if you're facing fiends outside of campaigns where you would normally face fiends having access to it is pretty darn great. Remove Curse is almost always prepared reactively, which is really nasty if the curse in question is fast-acting. When you need it gone suddenly, you can make it gone suddenly.

    Genie's Vessel is super amazing and flavourfull. I made a character that is supposed to get interesting items and the like for their patron and one big option I saw here is that you can get into the vessel and let another character gift the vessel to someone. They might store it in their secure treasury place, where you can get out, take their stuff and then have to break out, which should be easier than breaking in.
    This can be used similarly for espionage.
    Also Elfs can use it for long rests at level 1.
    You might also be able to decorate it further offering the possibility for crafting or just a pool or something like that for relaxiation.
    Great example of a feature that is strong but not in a purely number mechanics way but in a way that gives you interesting options to use creatively. Hope I get other great ideas for using it from the comments here. :)
    Edit: I thought of another use: The vessel vanishes when you die. Depending if you interpret that as it gets destroyed and spilling it's content's you might be able use that to strore a glyph of warding with a revivfy spells in it to be cast on you as soon as you go down or something similar.

    Hi just about the genie's wrath & crusher combo. That's a really neat idea, I might try it out myself. However the extra damage is only once on your turns when you make an attack roll, so only one of your eldritch blasts will qualify. But yeah I also believe you can annouce after you declare the roll? So that's pretty darn cool!

    • @ITelefonmanI
      @ITelefonmanI 3 года назад +2

      The main idea behind the combo is to lift your enemy 10ft+ into the air and let them drop - without special feats (or a DM ruled dex save) they fall prone from that height. The damage, including fall damage (1d6 bludgeoning per 10ft if I remember correctly), is "just" a nice to have.

I love pact of the chain for the imp familiar and its extra damage at low levels, but there's an interesting interaction that also has me hooked in that when I go into my genie vessel my invisible, flying familiar can carry my vessel for me. When the whole party can join me inside, we will effectively be able to use it to reset when a fight goes poorly, depending on DM rulings of course. I am coupling this with darkness and devil's sight, which combined with the Kobold's pack tactics means I will frequently be attacking blinded opponents and rolling with advantage. Using darkness on an item carried by the familiar will make for nice versatility in battle.

So you can’t use the feature with spells that are bonus actions, reactions, long cast time spells (like Greater steed) but you can do things like a mental prison (cause theme and you pair that with Mind sliver and you have an effective 1/2 punch for removing the defense stripped BBEG.)
    Great class especially for those with resistances to start and Yuan-Ti, Tieflings, Dragonborn, Aasimar. (Shame people don’t name drop those races enough with this warlock).

    Rules Question: (unrelated to this video) What is the interaction between Primal Companion and Polymorph? It *baffles* me.
    Like... What is the CR of the Tasha's version of the Beastmaster Ranger's Companion? If I'm playing a beast master as published in Tasha's, and the party bard casts Polymorph on my companion, does he treat the companion as having a level equal to mine, since its stats scale based on my Proficiency Bonus? Or does he base it only on my number of ranger levels and ignore any other levels my character has, since that's what determines the companion's HP? If I am a level 8 Ranger, can a friend polymorph my companion into a T Rex? If they can, what happens to that T Rex? Does it still obey my commands? Can I still use a bonus action to command it to make an attack? Do those answers change if I'm a Ranger 6/Fighter 2? Does the DM use the CR Calculator? If you use the CR Calculator, how do you factor in traits like Shared Spells, which isn't part of the creature's stat block in TCoE and is not typical of the monsters the CR calculator was meant to handle, but since the primal companion is my class feature as a ranger and Shared Spells increases its efficacy, shouldn't it be factored in?
    What would you let a player do at your table and what would you suggest to DMs who face this conundrum?

      You close into melee, booming blade, crusher them 5 ft away from you which forces them to activate the booming blade rider dmg to get back to melee you.
      I've had a version of this with divine sorc that does this better.
      Level 10: rune knight 3, divine sorc 5, grave cleric 2.
      move to melee range
      action: path to the grave
      bonus action: quicken spell upcasted cloud of daggers 5ft behind enemy.
      action surge: booming blade. activate fire rune, gwm (i used a maul), menacing attack maneuver (from superior technique fighting style). Empower spell if you roll low. Whatever the dmg, is double it. Use favored of the gods in case you miss. Activate crusher. Push enemy into the upcasted cloud of daggers. Laugh maniacally if they fail the save for menacing attack (as they are now frightened and cant move towards you+have disadvantage). They take cloud of daggers no save dmg as they enter.
      Start of their turn. Take cloud of daggers dmg. No save. Then they have a fun decision to make:
      1. Stay in the cloud of daggers to prevent booming blade dmg.
      2. Move towards you or away from you (if frightened) while triggering booming blade dmg to avoid cloud of daggers dmg.
      On round 2, repeat the crusher + booming blade + quickened cloud of daggers combo.

    Where does it say you can move a creature upwards with repelling blast?

      I think the idea is that the crusher feat doesn't specify a specific direction, thus straight up could be considered an option....
      And at that point, depending on positioning, a straight line from the caster to the target could be a diagonal line upwards and away...

    Crusher only works on bludgeoning damage. How do we turn our eldich blast from force to bludgeoning?

    Content creator question (this is my personal account). The art you use for videos. Is it purchased in some way? Is it fair use if used for only a certain amount of time?

    While genie is for sure the better option here, I think I like fathomless a bit more flavor wise. The fun you could do with evards, pushing/pulling/lance of lethargy and the tentacle slow would be pretty obnoxious, if not as good as crusher with dao. I'd probably let my players argue a tentacle could do bludgeoning damage to make it somewhat comparable to djinn patron.
